The US Department of Health and Human Services is offering nonprofits $4.6 million for providing “abstinence-only” pregnancy prevention education programs. Entities that receive this funding — which the government has been providing periodically for more than a decade — must teach the benefits of abstaining from sex, but are prohibited by law from “any other education regarding sexual conduct.”
A recent New York Daily opinion piece says Abstinence-Education is essentially a waste of time and money and is destined to fail. The author hypothesizes that the funding is politically-driven and being offered to placate conservatives.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Is Abstinence education worth it? Should most or all funding be spent on sex-education only?
