She Passed Away But Her Uterus Carried Another Woman’s Baby To Term

A year ago, a baby girl was born by caesarean section in a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, after being conceived by IVF. What made the birth unique was that the child had been gestated in a womb transplanted from a 45-year-old woman who had died.

Births resulting from uterus transplants have been happening since 2014, but for all previous children conceived this way, the donor was alive. That, understandably, places severe limits on the availability of the organs. This demonstration, reported in the Lancet – that a uterus can be successfully preserved and transplanted from a deceased person – could relax the supply bottleneck for women otherwise unable to conceive because of uterine problems.

The recipient in this case was a 32-year-old born with a condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. It affects one in 4,500 women and means that the womb fails to develop. Before she was given the transplant in 2016 it was unclear if a uterus could remain capable of gestating a baby if it had been deprived of blood supply for some time after the death of the donor. The baby weighed 2.5kg at birth on 15 December 2017, and both mother and child remain healthy. The transplanted uterus was removed from the mother during the delivery.

All this sounds like good news for women who, because of injury, illness, surgery (hysterectomy) or congenital conditions, would need a transplant in order to bear a child.

Women in Hollywood Are Getting Baby Foreskin Facials Now

First it was “vampire” facials and now affluent women and celebrities like Kate Beckinsale, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are going to spas to have the foreskin of circumcised babies applied to their skin for cosmetic reasons.

How it works is: Dermal fibroblasts–skin cells that are responsible for generating connective tissue–are taken from the circumcised foreskin of infant penises and then used as a culture for growing new stem cells.

Those new cells are then used to make a serum that is applied to the face as part of a specialized facial.

The procedure costs $650 and is offered at the Georgia Louise Atelier in New York City, and has become a go-to among celebrities.

In a recently deleted Instagram post, actress Kate Beckinsale reportedly admitted she got one of the penis facials.

“After a long flight I do like to lie down and be covered in a mask of liquified cloned foreskins-frankly who doesn’t?” People magazine reports the captioned an Instagram photo “Thank you @georgialouisesk for an amazing facial. I especially liked you reassuring me it would be ‘light on penis’ as it was my first time x.”

Yikes! The reply and backlash was swift and probably is the reason Beckinsale removed the post.  You can read Cafe Mom’s round up of some negative social media commentary HERE!

Earlier this year, Bravo TV scripted television star Jill Kargman tried out the procedure and penned her experience for Hollywood Reporter and even starred in a smiley photo after the treatment. Eeek!

Debate: The Parent who Named Her child, ‘ABCDE’ v. Airline Employee

Abcde Redford and Traci Redford Southwest Airlines

In America, 328 parents have decided to name their child, “ABCDE”, pronounced, AB-si-dee”, according to the  Social Security Administration database which has existed only since 2014.

One said child and her mom Traci Redford were pre-boarding a Southwest Airlines flight in Orange County going home to El Paso, Texas when Redford overheard an airline employee mocking her daughter’s name.

According to news affiliate ABC7 in Los Angeles. The Redfords were preboarding — as they usually do because Abcde is epileptic — when the Southwest Airlines gate agent started laughing and pointing at the child and making fun of her unique name to fellow airline employees. “I turned around and said, ‘Hey, if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you, so I’d appreciate if you’d just stop,’” Redford told ABC7.

Redford said her daughter asked her, “‘Mom, why is she laughing at my name?’” then replied. “‘You know, honey, not everybody is nice. And not everyone’s gonna be nice, and it’s unfortunate,’”

The employee took a photo of the girl’s boarding pass and posted in on Facebook. That’s when a social media user told the mom of the posting after reporting it to Southwest. The airlines issued an apoloyg ot the mom after she filed a formal complaint but failed to get a response for two weeks.

The Airline’s statement reads:

“We extend our sincere apology to the family. We take great pride in extending our Southwest Hospitality to all of our Customers, which includes living by the Golden Rule and treating every individual with respect, in person or online. The post is not indicative of the care, respect, and civility we expect from all of our Employees. We have followed up with the Employee involved, and while we do not disclose personnel actions publicly, we are using this as an opportunity to reinforce our policies and emphasize our expectations for all Employees.”

She took it to ABC7 which got nationwide attention, but most people online are blaming the mom for giving her daughter that name. Click to read the commentary:

Selfies Are Driving a Surge in Nose Surgery Among GenY and Gen Z

Who would have thought the time would come when selfies would be changing the face of plastic surgery? Like literally!

That’s the result of new research which found that in the past year alone, 55 percent of plastic surgeons surveyed have had a patient bring in a photoshopped selfie of themselves to discuss their surgery goals, many of which include a Rhinoplasty procedure.

What’s happening is that  Millennials and Gen Z are looking at their selfies and bringing them to in to point what is wrong with their own look. They are also finding #nosegoals from celebrity profiles, specifically from Instagram.

*deep sigh*

The results of this survey reveal a substantial increase from 42 percent vs. the previous year!

How did we get here?

Prospective patients are now constantly using their phones, taking pictures of themselves, and using apps (such as face tune) that improve their less than desirable features and are visiting Plastic Surgeons for an aesthetic solution.

Dr. Philip J. Miller, Facial Plastic Surgeon based out of NYC as well as an avid Photographer explains why the selfie is the very wrong tool to be using as a barometer of one’s appearance.

“A selfie camera has a very wide-angle lens,” Dr. Miller explains. “That’s why, at arm’s length, you can capture several people in one photograph,” adding, “This wide-angle lens contain within it a deceiving distortion of the central part of the image relative to the outside.”

Think of the “fisheye” lenses which create immense distortions of a person’s face.

“Also, compounding to the distortion is the fact that selfies are usually taken under the worst lighting conditions,” he states. “As such, shadows are cast over the face in the most unfavorable locations,” but they also highlight and enhance features that are not at all that prominent under normal conditions.

These factors are why people  are going to him to alter their face based on their selfies. Watch Dr.Miller, an avid photographer, share his tips on taking the best selfie. Hint: part of it has to do with getting the camera as far away from your face as possible! Watch:

First Time Ever Govt Recommendations for Toddlers Physical Activity

Even preschoolers don’t get enough exercise in America.

For the first time, the US Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) has released federal guidelines on physical activity, fitness, and health that include specific recommendations for preschool children between the ages of three and five years old. The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, released this week (Nov. 12), are the result of 21 months of research from an advisory committee made up of 17 non-federal experts in physical activity and health.

The guidelines recommend that preschool kids be physically active for at least three hours a day. But the average US preschooler doesn’t meet that standard, according to available data. For example, a 2015 study published in Pediatrics looked at 98 preschoolers in 10 child-care centers in Seattle and found that they only got an average of about 48 minutes of exercise a day. That’s bad news both for kids and their caregivers.

Encouraging kids to be active

American children, including preschoolers, are increasingly sedentary—which can have with devastating consequences for their physical and mental health. Childhood obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a lack of physical activities in kids and adolescents can increase their risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, low bone density, and breast, colon, endometrial, and lung cancers. There’s also an important linkbetween daily physical activity and better grades, school attendance, and cognitive skills like memory or concentration.

Flight Attendant Breastfeeds Passenger’s Baby

Flight attendants get called on to do all sorts of things in the air.

Phillipines Airline flight attendant Patrisha Organo stepped up to breastfeed a passenger’s baby when the mom ran out of infant formula during a long flight.

Organo, who obviously had recently given birth and had milk supply from nursing her own baby, jumped in to help the exasperated mom.

“Everything went smoothly until after take off,” Phillippine Airlines attendant Patrisha Organo wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday about a domestic flight.

“I heard an infant’s cry, a cry that will make you want to do anything to help,” Organo captioned a photo of her doing the good deed while blurring out the face of the baby to protect and the family’s privacy. “I approached the mother and asked if everything’s OK, I tried to tell her to feed her hungry child. Teary-eyed, she told me that she ran out of formula milk. Passengers started looking and staring at the tiny, fragile crying infant. I felt a pinch in my heart. There’s no formula milk on board. I thought to myself, there’s only one thing I could offer and that’s my own milk. And so I offered.”

Presumably for one reason or another the passenger couldn’t nurse her own child.

Bravo to her though feedback wasn’t all positive as some people commenting on the FB post pointed out the health risk of passing on things like HIV and other potentially harmful things to a stranger’s baby.

Indeed, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that giving a baby breast milk from another mother can pose health risks.

“Risks for the baby include exposure to infectious diseases, including HIV, to chemical contaminants, such as some illegal drugs, and to a limited number of prescription drugs that might be in the human milk, if the donor has not been adequately screened,” the FDA counsels.

Alert: Birth Control Pill Recall

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has recalled three lots of birth control pills after it was discovered that the medication’s dispensers were printed without “appropriate” instructions, the FDA said.

One lot of Ortho-Novum 1/35 and two lots of Ortho-Novum 7/7/7 were recalled because the taking the pills without following the proper instructions could cause women to take them in the wrong order, according to a recall alert

It could also lead women to take an inactive “reminder” pill instead of an “active” pill which could cause unintended pregnancy or bleeding, officials said.

The pills must be taken in the correct order for them to be effective.

The FDA provided a list of the three affected lots.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals issued a statement on the recall and provided correct instructions on its web site.

“The Ortho-Novum product itself remains safe and effective for use with the appropriate dispenser instructions,” the statement said. “Women should continue to take the 21 ‘active’ pills for three weeks, followed by the one week of ‘reminder’ pills.”

The pills were were distributed in the U.S. wholesalers, distributors and pharmacies, and they have been notified by recall letter to return affected products, the FDA said.

4th and 5th Graders Can Ski FREE This Winter in PA

The Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association (SkiPA) wants to make it affordable for kids to stay active, have fun and get outdoors with their families this winter.

SkiPA invites 4th and 5th graders to ski or snowboard for FREE up to three times at 21 participating Pennsylvania Area Ski Resorts.

Additionally, fourth and fifth graders can take advantage of a beginner lift, lesson, and rental package free.  Snowpasses are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, so PSAA encourages families to fill out their applications online now.

And, families DO NOT need to be from PA to participate.  There is a nominal online processing fee of $35 before Dec. 1 and $40 after.

Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this season, the Snowpass program can be used even if your child has never skied or snowboarded before.

Any fourth or fifth grade student can participate by completing a simple application and providing a report card or other document verifying they are currently in the fourth or fifth grade. A photo of the student is also required.

You can apply online at www.skipa.com or download an application and apply by mail.

Skiing and snowboarding offer families the opportunity to exercise outside together during the winter months.

A ninety-pound youth can burn between two and three hundred calories per hour skiing and / or snowboarding depending on their activity level. Skiing and snowboarding are listed among the activities included in the President’s Challenge organized by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Children and adults can earn points toward a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award by skiing and snowboarding. Twenty-one ski/snowboard resorts across Pennsylvania belong to the Snowpass program.

The Snowpass can be used at the following Pennsylvania ski area resorts:

First-Time Ski Tips for Kids

It can be a little overwhelming skiing with kids in tow for the first-time. SkiPA has five helpful tips to make the experience less stressful and enjoyable for all.

  • Memorize the NSAA Your Responsibility Code

Before embarking out on the first ski trek, make sure everyone in the family discusses the Your Responsibility Code . The National Ski Areas Association developed the code to help skiers and boarders be aware that there are elements of risk in snow sports that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce.

  • Wear a Helmet

The National Ski Areas Association recommends wearing a helmet. It is important to make sure the helmet fits correctly for maximum protection and comfort on the slopes. A ski and snowboard helmet are not something to grow into. Learn more at www.LidsonKids.org.

  • Dress for Success

Properly suiting up for a day on the slopes is key to staying warm and dry. Cotton clothing such as jeans and a sweatshirt will become wet, then cold. So, the key is to make smart fabric choices and dress in layers. Layering allows the body to adapt to changing temperatures. Look for fabric that is water and wind-resistant. Most importantly, kids should wear a hat or headband, polyester or wool socks and gloves or mittens as the extremities are the first to feel heat-loss.

  • Wear Sun Protection

Always make sure children have sunscreen and ski goggles. The sun reflects off the snow, so is stronger than you think even on overcast days. Goggles provide the best protection for every day on the slopes, especially for children. Making sure the goggles fit properly is very important. When fitting children, be sure to try on the helmet and goggles together to make sure they fit seamlessly.

  • Take a Lesson

Start kids out with a ski lesson by a trained professional. Most resorts offer lessons for kids as young as three or four. Children’s instructors know how to teach kids specifically by starting with key fundamentals and slowly progressing to make the experience fun while building confidence on the slopes.

Good luck and have fun!
