Control What Kids See During ScreenTime, Filter Explicit Materials with This App

family screen time

Screen time just got easier with a new social information sharing platform for parents that allows them to select appropriate content for their children to see while their online.

Smartfeed is a relatively new desktop interface that allows users to search over 27,000 movies, TV shows, apps and books and curate them all on one profile for each child. Parents can also select from among recommendations left by Smartfeed’s staff of educational professionals.

Here is an example of the categories:

Users can filter by source – Netflix, Xfinity, Apple and more. The social part comes into play when users share titles and playlists with another.

Also, the lists/profile you make for each kid makes it easier for your sitter, your in-laws or your child’s playdate to know what’s cool to play for screen time when a parent is away.

To start, select specific characteristics, likes and interest of a child and the algorithm does its magic and presents a series of recommendations for you. If you want, you can click a link and be taken to one external site to order the video, app, book or movie.

What You Should Know about the Maternal Diet-Kid Allergy Link (INFOGRAPHIC)

btchurch-2

Listen, I confess that I really am not up on the latest information about food allergies for babies, children, or adults. I should be given I am raising three of my own children and they all have seasonal allergies and are susceptible, perhaps, to developing other types of allergies.

The research, data and studies conflict one another and can be overwhelming. XTend, a New Zealand-based company which is the world’s leading manufacturers and sellers of high quality health supplements and skincare products, offered to help me out by sharing with me the results of a recent study it conducted of over 400 mothers to ascertain what are the common misconceptions they hold about allergies.

Here is the good news: I am not alone, most moms, including pregnant women, are blase or clueless, so I don’t feel like I am the only “bad mom.”

Here is the bad news: I am not alone, most moms, including pregnant women, are blase or clueless. We shouldn’t be. You can check out some of the survey results that are summarized over at XTend’s website here; and give a scan to this handy infographic they assembled for those of us who are overwhelmed with information and learn better with visuals. Head to Toe: Keeping Your Newborn Clean Between Baths

clean baby

Everybody knows that babies get dirty, however, only parents know the true extent of just how dirty that can get. New parents are in for a wild ride of drool, tears and the occasional diaper explosion. It can get messy and stressful, but those tender moments when your baby looks up at you and smiles make it all worth it. Baby’s bath time is important, yet for the first few months, you aren’t going to need to bathe them every day (until they start getting dirty, it’s recommended that you bathe them only two or three times a week).

However, hygiene is still an important part of their daily routine that you are going to want to instill in them. So, how do you keep your newborn clean between baths?

Regular Diaper Changes

Newborns under a month old should have their diapers changed right around ten times a day – definitely not less than six. They will typically have around three or four bowel movements a day. As they get older this number will change, below is a table detailing estimates of how many times a day you should change your baby and how many diapers a month that equates to:

AgeDiaper Changes Per Day# Diapers Per Month
0-1  Month10-12320
1-5 Months8-10240
5-9 Months8240
9-12 Months8240

Remember, the above numbers are just an estimate – some babies will require more, some will require less. Diapers also need to be changed as soon as it is noticed that they are soiled. Urine and bacteria can lead to painful rashes that take time to treat.

Trim Their Nails

One of the most dreaded parts of taking care of your newborn is when it comes time to trim their little nails. Just like the rest of them, their nails have been growing since before they were born – so they may need a trim during the first week (and every two or three days of the first three weeks, until the nails harden and stop growing so quickly).

While one of your older relatives might suggest nibbling on them, you may peel them too far back which is, obviously, immensely painful. When clipping, hold your baby’s finger tight and press the the fingertip pad down and away from the nail – and of course, always using special baby clippers or scissors. Snip while following the gentle curve of their fingernail.

Wipe Them Down

No matter whether you’re at home or at the grocery store, you should always be sure to keep some baby wipes handy. You never know when they’re going to spit-up or have some other kind of fluid disaster – so be prepared for everything! It’s also a good idea to keep clean swaddling cloths on you at all times, too. Just like the top sheet on your bed keeps your blankets from becoming dirty, these handy baby sheets can be quickly swapped out for a clean one upon soiling.

When it comes down to it, you want to keep your baby as clean as possible to give them the best possible hygiene for a healthy and happy life!

Study: Vitamin B During Pregnancy Decreases Baby’s Eczema Risk

baby-1178539_640

Moms-to-be, take note! Eating foods rich in a type of vitamin B – such as fish, meat, chicken and mushrooms – during pregnancy may lower the risk of your child developing eczema, a condition that causes the skin to become dry and itchy, a new study has found. The study from the University of Southampton in the UK is the first to link maternal serum levels of nicotinamide, a naturally occurring vitamin, and related metabolites to the risk of atopic eczema in the child.

The researchers believe the findings support the concept that eczema partly originates as a baby develops in the womb and could show ways to reduce the risk of the skin condition. “Nicotinamide cream has been used in the treatment of eczema but the link between the mother’s levels of nicotinamide during pregnancy and the offspring’s risk of atopic eczema has not been previously studied,” said Sarah El-Heis, from the University of Southampton. “The findings point to potentially modifiable influences on this common and distressing condition,” said El-Heis.

To Avoid Long Labor and C-Section, Sleep More During Pregnancy

woman-1118212_960_720

Sleep more if you want to avoid a long labor and having a C-Section. That is the little factoid I got from fertility tracking app Glow’s recent report on sleep during pregnacy.

Precisely, Glow cited a 2004 NIH study which found among the survey participants, first-time moms who got less than 6 or fewer hours of sleep at night. Compared to moms-to-be  who got 7 hours of sleep per night or more, those in the 6 and under group were almost 5x more likely to have a C-section, and their average length of labor was 10 hours or longer. Whoa!

Here are some other tidbits about sleep during pregnancy that moms-to-be may want to know:

  • As much as we’d like to control how much sleep we get, sleep during pregnancy is partially influenced by circumstances beyond our control—age, race, and general demographics.

    • For instance, women under age 25 sleep the most per night, 15 minutes per night more than women aged 25-35, and 30 more minutes than women 35 and older. This pattern is consistent throughout the entirety of pregnancy.

  • Pregnant women in their 1st and 2nd trimester sleep more than their non-pregnant and third-trimester selves.

  • Average sleep peaks at week 10 and declines slowly in the weeks after.

  • As women zero-in on deliver day, they’re getting about 30 minutes less-than-typical sleep at night.

  • 26% of women start snoring during pregnancy, and 35% of women report snoring three or more times a week when pregnant!

For your College Bound Kid: 3 Application Essay Tips

college essay

Parents to high school children who plan to attend college know that college application season is around the corner. A lot of decisions are made based on the application essay. It can be the difference between an acceptance, rejection or wait list.

College admission professional, Elizabeth Dankoski, has helped hundreds of high achieving students get into the college of their dreams (75% are accepted into top 20 schools) with tips for how to write a “Harvard-Worthy” college application essay. She offers for our tips for readers with college-bound children for creating top notched college essays:

  1. Tell a deeply personal story about profound change: “There’s nothing more important you can do in your essay than tell a deeply personal story. Your essay is your opportunity to show the colleges something they can’t glean from looking at your SAT scores or GPA or activity sheet. This is the only way you’re going to differentiate yourself from every other student — by telling a story that highlights something deeply personal about you.
  2. Make it vivid: “If you want your reader to connect with your essay, your opening needs to leap off the page. Try to get as many senses involved as you can: sight, sound, smell, taste, feel… Once you’ve set the stage like this, a few colorful details woven throughout your essay will keep your story alive and full of spark.

  3. Offer a bit of mystery at the end: “One of the hardest things my students struggle with is the ending to their essays. Either they feel like they have to tie everything up in a neat bow or they end up with overly generalized and clichéd language. Remember that you don’t need to have everything figured out. It’s okay if you don’t fully understand how to make sense of your experiences. What’s important is to make it clear that you’re willing to stay with this confusion until the answers become clear.

“When you allow a bit of mystery into the end, you let the reader know that you’re okay with not knowing everything. That shows maturity, and it lets the colleges know that you’re in a perfect place to dive into the complicated issues you’re going to face in your college classes.”

God speed parents! And kids!

Here are Tips to Help Make Your Neighborhood Safe

Depositphotos_70092983_s-2015

Gone are the days of knocking on a neighbor’s door to borrow a cup of sugar, or the neighborhood kids playing together every night until sundown. With folks being busier than ever and technology keeping families inside more, many of today’s neighborhoods just don’t have that close-knit fabric that neighborhoods of yesteryear once had.

Experts say that one consequence of not having close relationships with your neighbors is the safety of your neighborhood as a whole. According to safewise.com, the U.S. has more burglaries than any place on the map, with one break-in happening every 15 seconds.

Pretty startling numbers.

However, there are steps families can take to help ensure their neighborhood — and homes — stay as safe as possible by teaming up with neighbors.

Stay informed

The FBI reports that 60 percent of burglars get into homes by way of force. Shockingly, though, 30 percent do so through a window or door that is not locked. Needless to say, it is important that your doors stay locked as much as possible, even when you are home. It’s also a good idea to close your windows and blinds at night (after all, you don’t want to outright show potential burglars what is inside your home). Further, well-kept yards have been shown to deter crime and offer fewer places for burglars to hide during a break-in.

Get personal

If you don’t already know your neighbors, you may want to begin introducing yourself and building a relationship with them. It is helpful for neighbors to be aware of one another’s general schedules (e.g., if they work during the day or at night) and if there are any children or elderly folks that may need extra looking out. Simply being aware of who your neighbors are and what their normal activity is can help you spot any suspicious activity.

Further, it’s smart to share contact information, particularly for when someone goes out of town. You never know when you may need to be notified of something that is happening. You may even wish to take getting to know your neighbors a step further by organizing a get together, such as a block party. This can help build camaraderie and help folks feel more comfortable spending time outside in the neighborhood, which can further deter burglars.

Get connected

Staying connected virtually with your neighbors is also essential in today’s tech-forward world. During the 2014 earthquake in San Francisco, neighbors and local agencies heavily relied on social channels to share information and communicate about safety tips, damage and more.

You might consider starting a Facebook group for your neighbors in order to privately share updates on everyday happenings, events like parties and garage sales, as well as any safety and security info. Be sure to keep the commentary open and updated, and be sure to remember your non-Facebook neighbors, as well, when sharing information. Additionally, private social networks like Nextdoor offer another platform for staying on top of the happenings in your neighborhood.

Stay secure

Studies have shown that most burglars check out whether a home has an alarm system prior to invading it. In fact, convicted burglars have even admitted that they avoid homes with security measures in place, and flee target houses if an alarm goes off.

Suffice it to say, it is vital to take steps to secure your home by investing in a tried-and-true security camera system. A security camera with key features like high definition picture quality and a rugged build to withstand any weather and potential vandalism is the best bet.

The bottom line is this: A closer-knit neighborhood is a safer neighborhood. By joining forces with your neighbors, you can work as a team to prevent crimes from happening on your block.

10 Etiquette Tips For Families Because Who Uses the Phone Anymore?

Copy of SINCE

In today’s modern era, it is very easy to forget a lot of the common things we did in the past, like how to be courteous on the phone. Our lives seems to be fun by our smart phones-texts, social media, calendars and appointments, games, apps, to do lists, are all housed on these handy devices.

But here is the thing, our children do not even use their phones for having telephone conversation. No one remembers anyone’s telephone number any longer.

Smartphones are training all of us to use alternative forms of communication, to the point where a ringing phone is a cause for concern. 140 character tweets, emails, text messages, SnapChats, WhatsApp, and so on. And while those over the age of thirty are in fact ‘training’ in this brave new world, the twenty-somethings and younger have been brought on up on these tools of communication; the art of talking on the telephone, not unlike the art of letter writing, has gone the way of the dodo bird. Yet, we are finding that when it comes to communicating clearly and succinctly, avoiding miscommunication and building relationships, there is very much still a place and need for the phone call. So brushing up on our phone etiquette and skills is not such a bad idea.

Joel Schwartz, founder of  Parlor.me, offers some great tips about phone etiquette.  With an emphasis on electronic communication over the last few years, we are now learning that often a phone conversation is more meaningful and more effective at communicating our thoughts and ideas. As we learn to balance texting with voice communication, many of us have forgotten the do’s and don’ts of a phone conversation.

  1. When answering a call, be sure to speak clearly and enunciate: you don’t know how well the person on the other end hears and it’s nothing less than frustrating to have to ask the person who answered to repeat themselves. Twice.
  2. The same rule goes if you are calling someone: be clear in stating who you are and whom you wish to speak with. How can you be clear? Pronounce your words clearly and don’t speak too quickly. This will allow the person on the other end to understand you easily.
  3. Watch your volume: gone are the days when one had to speak loudly on the telephone, particularly for long distance calls, in order to be heard. In fact, a higher volume can make it harder for the caller to understand you.
  4. One person at a time: if you’re talking on the telephone, give that person your full attention and don’t respond to a person standing in front of you. The person on the phone can’t see you and won’t know whom you are addressing. If you MUST address the person in front of you, ask your caller if you can place them on hold or if you can call them back. Parents are particularly prone to ignoring a caller in favor of a child who has arrived to interrupt, without saying a word to the person on the other end of the line. Don’t do that: it’s rude!
  5. Having your child answer the phone: Since Grandma is probably the only person who enjoys having her calls answered by three year old Johnny, it’s best to put rules in place early about answering a ringing phone: when to do it, when not to and what to say if they do.
  6. Sharing your conversation: Speakerphones have their place. An office conference room for a teleconference call, for example. In the middle of a busy restaurant? Not so much. Beyond that, the sound quality is often a lot less with a speakerphone and your caller may not be able to hear you very well. TIP? If you’re using a smartphone and want to be hands free while you talk, use a headphone with a mic on it. The sound will be much clearer for both of you!
  7. Hands free doesn’t necessarily mean you should have busy hands: One of the worst things while on the phone with someone is listening to them doing something while they are talking to you. It gives the impression that the importance of the call is secondary and not worth their full attention. Typing, moving papers around, watching television, making lunch. Worse yet, eating lunch: listening to people chew over the phone is unpleasant at best, disgusting at worst. And … dare I mention one last ‘don’t do while you’re on the phone’? No going to the bathroom. If that has never happened to you, you’re lucky. Trust us on this.
  8. Leave a message even if it’s just to say ‘hi’: Even if all you did was call someone to say hello, leave a message saying as much. It’s annoying for the person to come, see your number on call display but no message: they’re left wondering if they should call back or if something important has happened. This can be tricky however: millennials would rather you hung up and sent a text. A Gen-Y would prefer you left a message. Consider whom you are calling when you decide what to do about messages.
  9. For the business caller: if you’re on a conference call, and you need to step away or speak with someone else, make sure to mute yourself so that your background noise doesn’t interrupt the call for everyone else. While it’s hard sometimes do know when to go ahead and speak during a group call, be sure to let others finish a complete thought before jumping in, or you could drown out the rest of their statement.
  10. Don’t interrupt: Allow the person speaking to finish her or her thought or idea prior to jumping in with your point of view. A phone conversation is all about give and take. One person should not dominate the conversation unless you’re on a business call and someone is giving a verbal presentation. Allow room for discussion and exchange of ideas.

Some of these tips might seem obvious but the key to etiquette is to remember that perception is reality: if someone perceives that you are being rude, you are being rude, whether you think you are or not. If you’re not sure how to behave, simply imagine the roles reversed. Would you want someone snapping gum in your ear while you were on the line? We think not:)

These are THE best Vehicles for Easy Car Seat Installation

carseat

This week is Child Passenger Safety Week, starting Sept. 18, a week that helps to educate parents and caretakers about the importance of car seat safety.

If you’re in the market for a new SUV, mini van or car, then you will want to make sure that the vehicle is easy to install your child’s car seat.

Cars.com recently released its annual Car Seat Honor Roll of the top vehicles for car seats.

Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians installs car seats in nearly 100 new car models. These Car Seat Checks test each vehicle’s LATCH system and its ease of use by installing an infant seat, convertible seat and booster seat. Cars are graded on an A to F scale.

“Out of 84 model-year 2016 and 2017 vehicles tested in our Car Seat Checks, only six have made the Cars.com Car Seat Honor Roll,” said Jennifer Newman, Cars.com managing editor of news. “These six cars earned the top score of A in all of our Car Seat Check categories, setting them apart as the very best vehicles for car-seat installation.”

The Honor Roll recognizes the cars tested that make car seat installation easier for families. These include:

· 2017 Ford Escape – Not only did the Escape make Car Seat Honor Roll, but the 2017 Escape also earned top honors in Cars.com’s 2016 Compact SUV Challenge, deeming it the Best Compact SUV of 2016. This five-seat compact SUV makes quick work of car seat installation with its easy-to-access LATCH anchors, removable head restraints and reclining rear seatbacks. With a starting price of $24,495, it’s within reach for many small families.

· 2017 GMC Acadia – Despite shrinking in size, the redesigned 2017 Acadia earned an A in all Car Seat Check criteria. This midsize SUV is available with two or three rows. With a starting price of $29,995 for a three-row Acadia, larger families can travel in style and comfort.

· 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid – Featuring a roomy backseat with plenty of space for two rear-facing car seats and exposed LATCH anchors for quick car-seat installation. The Sonata Hybrid starts at $26,835, making it wallet-friendly.

· 2016 Jaguar XF – While Jaguar may not be the first automaker that comes to mind when thinking about family cars, it certainly knows how to treat a family well. The redesigned XF features one of our favorite styles of LATCH anchors: They sit behind removable plastic covers, making car seat installation easy as pie. With a starting price of $52,895, the XF may not jump to the top of a family’s car shopping list, but for those who take a closer look, there’s a lot to like.

· 2016 Mini Clubman – This Mini isn’t so mini anymore – the Clubman has grown a foot in length, helping it earn top honors in its Car Seat Check, but it also still manages to be fun to drive. With three rear seats in the 2016 version, the Clubman, which starts at $24,950, can work well for families of three or four.

· 2016 Toyota RAV4 – When it comes to car seats, the RAV4 is at the top of the class. Cars.com experts praise the RAV4’s “massive” backseat, which helps it easily handle those space-hogging rear-facing car seats. The best-selling RAV4 has a starting price of $25,250.

“At Cars.com, we have three Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who install and write our Car Seat Checks. During these checks, we investigate a car’s LATCH system, which is supposed to make car seat installation easier but oftentimes doesn’t, as well as how different car seat styles fit into a car.”

Things to Consider When Picking Your Baby’s Nursery Colors

nursery
When planning colors for your nursery, you’re probably more inclined to choose ones that you like. But, will the colors you like have an affect on your baby?Hindi Zeidman, baby expert and founder of The Ollie Swaddle, discusses below the meanings of colors and the affect they can have on your little one.

As we are expecting a little one, we often base our color choices on what we like or what we think looks cute. However, each color has different effects on our emotions, making it important to consider the influences of each color.

Color Families: Warm, Cool, and Neutral

Warm tones stimulate the mind and energize the body. They can make larger spaces feel cozy and welcoming. However, cozy doesn’t always translate to relaxing and so warm tones aren’t great for bedtime – especially if your little one is already energetic.

Compared to warm colors, cool tones tend to offer a more calming effect. They make rooms feel spacious and relaxing. With this in mind, darker shades should be used sparingly to avoid creating a gloomy atmosphere.

Neutral colors typically fall into either warm or cool tones, but since they are more subtle than red or blue they are considered neutral. While they take on the attributes of their warm and cool family, they are easier to match with a variety of colors.

The Meanings of Warm Colors

Red is a very bold color that is associated with aggression and inability to focus. Red is recommended for use sparingly. When utilized as an accent color, red can have positive, invigorating effects.

Yellow is a happy, energetic color that can make a room a sunny and bright. Associated with happiness, lighter yellows can aid in concentration while brighter shades can stimulate the memory.

Orange is welcoming, often puts people at ease and is considered a social color. Like its parent colors, too much orange can be overwhelming and should be used sparingly to maximize the positive properties.

The Meanings of Cool Colors

Blue has a calming effect, associated with decreasing anxiety and aggression. Since blue often reminds people of water, it can emulate a cool environment in a hot or humid setting.

Green is most closely associated health because of its relation to nature. As a soothing color, it can help increase one’s ability to concentrate.

Purple combines the solidity of blue and the vitality of red. It can take on the values of either color depending on the shade.

The Meanings of Cool Colors

Gray is often thought to be a gloomy color, but it can also evoke other, positive emotions. The right shades of gray can be calming and inspirational. It should be used in combination with warm, bright colors to avoid a somber tone.

Black is powerful and easily overwhelming color – but like its light shade of gray, it doesn’t have to be adverse. Black is an excellent accent color and goes well in a room with lots of natural light.

White is a pure and clean color. It can help to place the spotlight on brighter colors and play up their meanings.

Choosing a Nursery Color Scheme

If you’re choosing bold, bright colors, try to pair them with white or lighter shades. You don’t want to over-stimulate your little one, and yet you want the space to be fun and enjoyable. You’ll find a balance in the colors and shades that you use.

While it can be overwhelming to try and make the “perfect” decision for your little one, our best advice is to keep it simple. Stay true to yourself, consider your family dynamic and take time to think of the kind of environment you desire for your little one.
