Here are the Most Popular Baby Names in the South

sleeping baby
Guest post by Jackie Lam

The South has maintained a regional flair and identity that sets it apart from the rest of the United States. Its distinct culture is evident in everything from its rich cuisine to inimitable contributions to music and literature. Giving your baby boy or girl a name that’s widespread in this part of the country can carry that same uniqueness.

In order to identify the names that are most common in the South relative to the rest of the country, MooseRoots used data from the Social Security Administration to find the top names in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia (states designated as Southern states by the U.S. Census Bureau) in 2015.

We only included names that are present in all the Southern states, and compared the frequency of each name in the South with the rest of the U.S. Finally, we compiled a list of names most likely to appear in this region, and ranked the list in the visualization below from highest to lowest frequency relative to the rest of the country.

While Biblical names in this deeply religious region such as Nehemiah and Josiah may come as no surprise, the list reveals a strong preference for names that have origins in the U.S., such as Trenton, Bryson and Raelyn. These names are indicative of the Southern tradition of blending various elements to create something entirely original.

New Birth Control Apps Help Women Skip Doctors; Teens Avoid Disapproving Parents

app

There are 40 million cases of unintended pregnancies in the U.S. each year yet access to birth control remains a very highly controversial political topic. And now there are at least 6 ventures or private companies  (including Planned Parenthood)that have released desktop or mobile apps that enable women to get birth control without a doctor’s prescription.

The apps only require users to answer questions about their health online or by video. All of the apps  prescribe birth control pills, and some prescribe patches, rings and morning-after pills. Some ship contraceptives directly to women’s doors.

The app makers only have to follow state telemedicine laws and are not tied by federal regs and ongoing political wrangling.

Some of the apps, like web-based Nurx and mobile app Lemonaid, accept insurance, including Medicaid for women with low incomes; some charge modest fees. Some send prescriptions to local pharmacies, where women can present their insurance information when picking up the contraceptives, the New York Times reports.

The apps are said to eliminate the time and cost for some women to go to the doctors.

The apps also enable teens to get around their family doctor and having their parents find out they are having sex. No more intimidating or embarrassing trips to the clinic when your mom thinks you’re going to the movies. Whoa!

While these are great for convenience for many women, we can easily see where some parents may oppose these apps. They really do cut the parent out of the equation. Even if a mom or dad has opened up a clear path of communication, a lot of teen girls simply will not feel comfortable going to a parent for birth control.

And there is the case of a 15-year old girl whose mom did approve but was turned down when the family doctor told them “oh you don’t need to be doing that.”

There are some great anecdotal interviews with women who benefit from these apps in a NYT piece that was released today. Check it out there.

New Calls to Take Down Kid As Captain Hook Eaten By An Alligator Costume

captain hook

There is new backlash over an old popular DIY Halloween costume of a kid being eaten by an alligator. The costume is a novelty take off of a scene from the popular children’s classic Peter Pan where Captain Hook‘s hand gets eaten by an alligator.

However, given the death of a two-year old child who was snagged and dragged underwater by an alligator in a Walt Disney World resort hotel in Orlando, Florida, some are calling for sites that sell similar costumes to pull them.

A website called Instructables, for example,  shows visitors how to make a DIY version of the costume.

The concern is over the insensitivity of the costume going forward although previously, that costume was probably looked upon as a funny and harmless.

Also, the new calls have to do with American sensibilities. Sadly, it is not new for a child to be killed by an alligator in recent years. Before this Orlando tragedy, last May 2015, a 7 year old child chasing a balloon in Mexico was eaten by an alligator that jumped out of the swamp and pulled the child into the water.

In 2009, in Australia a 5-year old boy was eaten by an alligator when the boy ran into a creek to try to coax his puppy out. Alligators aren’t the only dangerous animals. In 2014, a 2-year old child was mauled to death and eaten by a new mama pig protecting its piglets from the boy.

It’s almost certain that we may see a few insensitive adults in this costume this Halloween.

Exploring LEGO’s Decision to Buck the Trend and Stick with Gender-Specific Toys

lego-286232_960_720

In the current world we live in, a lot of parents are rejecting gender-limiting toys and I think we all can agree that LEGO company has taken the brunt of a lot of the animosity from modern parenting culture.

It has to do with the fact that while a lot of toy companies were giving up on long-held preconceptions about gender-specific products, LEGO when the other way, shed its gender-neutral past, and started creating toys targeted specifically at either girls or boys. LEGO said it had a good reason for separating the products.

The consumer website Consumerist broke down 5 lessons it learned from observing LEGOs model:

1. An Untapped Market: In 2008, LEGO looked at global data about who was buying their toys. It turns out, that roughly 90% of LEGO sets sold were bought for boys, meaning that nearly half the kid population wasn’t using their products.

“Seeing that the play pattern was really skewing so heavily toward boys, we wanted to understand why,” company spokesperson Michael McNally said. “We embarked on four years of global research with 4,500 girls and their moms. Some of the things we heard were really surprising and challenging in ways that weren’t really comfortable for us as a brand.”

2. Getting To The Bottom Of It: After finding that its toys were mostly sold to boys, the company set out to find out why that was.

Over four years, LEGO conducted global research with 4,500 girls and their moms. The company found some surprising and challenging themes in the way their toys were perceived, McNally tells The Atlantic.

LEGO tells The Atlantic that children in its focus groups consistently had distinct ideas about how to interact with the same toys they encountered, and that expectations seemed to be drawn along gender lines in focus group after focus group, even when those children were very young.

3. Boys & Girls May Use Same Toys, But Play Differently: The most important aspect LEGO says it found was that children play with the same toys very differently.

In one project, the company asked separate groups of boys and girls to build a LEGO castle. While both groups worked together to build the castle, they took different approaches to play afterward.

For example, the boys immediately grabbed the figures, the houses, and the catapults and started having a battle, McNally recalled, noting that the boys used the castle as a backdrop for their play.

On the other hand, the girls were more focused on the castle itself.

“They all looked around inside the castle and they said, ‘Well, there’s nothing inside,’” McNally said. “This idea of interior versus exterior in the orientation of how they would then play with what they built was really interesting. If you think about most of the LEGO models that people consider to be meant for boys, there’s not a whole lot going on in there. But [the girls had] this idea of, ‘There’s nothing inside to do.’”

Overall, the groups of children both expressed interest in the building aspect, but the following interaction showed girls overwhelmingly wanted to build environments and more details in their toys.

Father’s Day: 7 Tips for the First Time New Dad Celebrating Today

new dad

Happy Father’s Day to all you first time new dads out there!

Congrats for making it to the daddy club. You may be exhausted, overwhelmed and still anxious. There will be a ups and downs but mainly ups. If you’re nervous, don’t worry too much. There is only so many ways you can mess up raising a baby.  To help you feel a little better, here are some great tips for new dads from Julia Wang, head of digital content at TheBump.com.

Tips for new dads:

  1. You’ll sometimes think you made a huge mistake — It’s normal every now and then to secretly wonder why you ever had a kid in the first place. Forgive yourself these occasional moments of self-doubt and, from time to time, let yourself mourn your pre-parenthood life. These moments will be short-lived.
  2. Buy a rechargeable, cordless hand vacuum — Much of your time will be spent getting things off the floor. At first, it will be all manner of bodily fluids, but soon enough, you’re going to be dealing with everything from Cheerios to banana slices. Later, the list will grow to include things like glitter, dirt, forgotten bacon and pretty much anything that can be shredded by small hands. And the clunky upright is too annoying to drag out four times a day.
  3. It’s perfectly acceptable to make an entire dinner in the microwave. That’s it.
  4. Act like a grown-up — One of the most heartbreaking sights is that of a parent and their young child in a shouting match trying to see who can out-tantrum the other. Children are an endless source of joy, but only when they’re not being an endless source of frustration. Breathe deeply and never let yourself escalate to the level of irrational fury that your little one occasionally inhabits. A two-year-old has the right to act like a child; you do not.
  5. Hand-me-downs are more than okay — Not only are secondhand baby things easier on the wallet and the environment, it’s a lot less agonizing when you find yourself on the fourth outfit of a craptastic kind of day (which, trust me, you will).
  6. Make time for the other relationships in your life — Not only is it important for your child to know there’s more to the world than you catering to their every need, but you’re also teaching them a very important lesson about what it means to have a full, loving life. Seeing you in the role of good friend or devoted spouse is a way for your kids to learn what it means to actually be a good friend or devoted spouse.
  7. You’re not the “backup parent.” You’re a father — You’re a full, equal partner in turning a small, fragile sack of fluid and bones into a loving, decent, healthy citizen of the Universe. Never let the fact that other people aren’t sure what to do with a man between conception and Little League fool you into thinking that you’re anything less than critical to every step of the process. Be informed, aggressively involved and as in love as you’re capable of letting yourself be.

Break a leg, new dads and congrats again!
