A Guide to Your Dad on Father’s Day

Father’s Day: 6 Times A Dad Caught a Fly Ball While Holding a Baby (VIDEOS)

Father’s Day is around the corner and now is a great time to reflect on how great dads are wonderful beings to their children. What better example of this is when a father saves a child’s life…literally!

Just in time for Dad’s day, let’s take a look at some fun video compilations of dads using their quick reflexes to rescue a baby or a kid in just the knick of time!

Super dad Brian Kucharik caught the ball with one hand whilst cradling his daughter Emily. Like, Whoa!

And since Father’s Day is tomorrow, can we give it up for all the other amazing dads who caught fly balls while being dad?

In 2014, on Father’s Day, a dad was probably coming back from a diaper change and arrived back at the stands just in time to catch Troy Tulowitzki‘s home run ball also with one-hand while holding his young daughter with the other hand. Dude casually walked back to his seat as the San Francisco Giants play the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.

Back in 2013, another dad caught a fly ball during a Diamondbacks v. San Francisco Giants game.

And let’s not leave the Minor League out of this.  In August 2015, dad Kyle Wren caught a foul ball while holding his baby as Colorado Springs took on Round Rock.

Dads catches, while good intentioned, aren’t always good for the game they’re watching.

Like the dad last June 2015 who reached in to catch a ball during a Chicago Cubs v. L.A. Dodgers game. The refs had to call the hit back. Doh!

Finally, honorable mention to the dad who saved his son from getting a hit in the face by a flying baseball bat during a March 2016 Pittsburgh Pirates v the Atlanta Braves game.

That 4Moms Origami Stroller is a Celebrity Fave

origami stroller

It’s been a long while since I last did my most expensive baby stroller post and since then the market has exploded with some amazing strollers.

One of the top strollers known and widely loved by tech aficionados is the  4moms Origami Stroller. It’s loved because it take the  stress out of traveling about with your kid. I mean it folds and unfolds automatically when you press a button and comes equipped with tech features like a built-in phone charger, thermometer, mileage counter, and LED headlights. If you had any doubt that this is the Rolex of strollers, the Origami Stroller even charges itself as you walk!

It’s on the pricey side but if you can afford it you’ll join the likes of a bunch of celebs who have been photographed out and about with their kids in them. about $850!

Kourtney Kardashian, Rachel Zoe, Tia Mowry, Kim Zolciak, Bethenny Frankel, Melanie Brown, Denise Richards, Kim Zolciak, Neil Patrick Harris and Mario Lopez all have been seen pushing their tots in it.

True Fact: When Working Moms Try to Have it All, They Sometimes Break Down

workingmom

Katrina Alcorn was a success working mother of three at a tech firm but increasingly found herself unable to handle the demands of trying to have it all. She had a reliable spouse, healthy kids, and a great job but having to juggle day care, demanding clients, sick kids and business trips was also daunting. Then one day, a co-worker walked in on her while she was pumping breast milk. On another occasion, a male employee sent out a company-wide email complaining about being grossed out by her “bodily fluids” being in the office fridge.

Then the panic attacks began.  They led to anxiety and depression over her inability to cope, balance and “lean in” all at the same time. But she felt guilty about complaining. After all, it was a privilege to be a working mom, right?

When women demand wanting the career and family,  there are the voices out there that say having kids is a luxury of the rich.  This same chorus claims that women should be able to stay at home with their children or hire help, and if they ask for anything like sanity, self-care and wellness, then that is pure “entitlement”.

Alcorn lost it. She suffered a nervous breakdown while driving to Target to buy diapers. The San Francisco Bay area mom eventually quit her job, spent a year decompressing and lived off of savings. When she emerged healthier and more mentally stable, she penned the book about the ugly secret of the working mom.

Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink” tells working moms three things:  You’re not alone. It’s not your fault. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

“We’re expected to do our jobs as if we don’t have children — and then raise our children as if we don’t have jobs,” Alcorn told The Week. “If you think about the model of the ideal mother, it’s the person who sacrifices everything for her child. The ideal worker is someone who can drop everything and go on a business trip at a moment’s notice, and who can stay late — not leave at 5 o’clock to pick up kids. So if you’re trying to be both, then you are faking it.”

Alcorn offers tips in her book and on her blog, WorkingMomsBreak.com.

She admitted getting frustrated by the trolls that come out when ever she writes about balance.

“As soon as anyone talks about motherhood being difficult or society having an obligation to mothers, the trolls come out en masse…and it makes me realize how much we need to talk about this,” she  added.  “I actually had a lot of advantages…the point is that if I couldn’t make it work, imagine what it’s like for single parents, or people living paycheck to paycheck!”

True that. And as many know, even “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg had to walk back her own advice in her book after husband passed away and she realized herself first hand that not having a spouse makes all that “leaning in” extra difficult.

It’s not as easy as they all say, so we really need to give moms a break!

From preparation to bed-wetting help, here are thirty of the blogs that will help you turn your little one into a potty training success story.

Potty Training Preparation

As with so many things in life, the level of success that you and your child will experience is largely contingent upon your level of preparation. Getting your little one ready to transition out of diapers requires some advance planning, as these bloggers can attest.

Potty Training For Boys

Potty training a little boy presents a unique set of challenges for moms and female childcare providers, which might be why old wives’ tales assert that potty training a boy is more difficult than it is with little girls. These five blog posts tackle the issue of potty training from the little boy perspective, helping parents and caregivers get their little guy out of diapers.

Potty Training For Girls
Every little girl is different, and will have her own unique experience with potty training. However, dads and male caregivers may find it daunting to assume the task of helping her break free of the diapers. These five blogs focus on potty training methods specific to little girls, rather than general, gender-neutral insights.
Elimination Communication
Popularized by celebrities like Mayim Bialik, the elimination communication method of potty training begins during early infancy and relies upon a parent or caregivers ability to properly time diaper actions and to take cues from a baby’s behavior regarding the matter. Elimination communication is also referred to as “infant potty training.”

New Sleep Recommendations for Kids are Out

baby

Kids who don’t get enough sleep are at risk for a whole range of mental and physical woes, including some potentially serious health issues. New sleep guidelines for babies, school-age children and teens, released Monday, outline just how many hours of sleep kids need at every age in order to help them be at their best.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is lending its backing to the recommendations developed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

Here’s the lowdown on how much sleep kids need at different ages, according to a consensus group of 13 sleep medicine experts and researchers who developed the recommendations:

  • Infants 4 to 12 months – 12 to 16 hours of sleep every 24 hours (including naps).
  • Children 1 to 2 years – 11 to 14 hours of sleep every 24 hours (includingnaps).
  • Children 3 to 5 years – 10 to 13 hours of sleep every 24 hours (including naps).
  • Children 6 to 12 years – 9 to 12 hours of sleep every 24 hours.
  • Teens 13 to 18 years – 8 to 10 hours of sleep every 24 hours.

Recommendations for babies younger than 4 months aren’t included because there is such a wide range of what’s normal when it comes to sleep patterns in newborns, and there isn’t enough research to back up guidance in the youngest of infants.

We Kinda Dig that scary Tenant Agreement ‘Tiger Mom’ Amy Chua Made her Millenial Daughters sign

Tiger Mom Amy Chua and daughters

When you’re known as the “Tiger Mom” and you’re a Yale contracts law professor, of course you’re going to draft up a fierce enforceable tenant agreement before you let your adult children co-habitate with you in your swanky Manhattan apartment for the Summer.

We can’t be mad.

Amy Chua, who penned the infamous book “Battle Hym of the Tiger Mom” had some pretty funny, albeit strict, clauses in the contract she made her millennial daughters Sophia and Lulu sign before they moved in.

Chua’s 20- and 23-year old girls are working in NYC for the summer.

Although, she lives in Connecticut full time with her husband, Jed Rubenfeld, Chua said they had saved up their entire life for that apartment.

She was not keen on becoming a “tenant farmer” in her own life, Chua shared in a funny column she penned in the Wall Street Journal.

The entire family signed the legally-enforceable contract.

Here are the key clauses (we secretly love) that the girls must abide by:

1. To occupy only the junior bedroom.

2. To greet Jed Rubenfeld & Amy Chua with spontaneous joy and gratitude whenever they visit.

3. To make their (joint) bed every day, and not to fight about who does it.

4. To never, ever use the phrase, “Relax—it’s not a big deal.”

5. To always leave all internal doors in the apartment wide open whenever Jed, Amy or any company whatsoever (including relatives) are in the apartment, with an immaculately made bed in full view and no clothing or other junk on the floor of the bedroom in sight.

6. Whenever any guests visit, to come out of the bedroom immediately in a respectable state, greet the guests with enthusiasm, and sit and converse with the guests in the living room for at least 15 minutes.

7. To always be kind to our trusty Samoyeds Coco and Pushkin, who Sophia and Louisa hereby agree have greater rights to the apartment than Sophia and Louisa do, and to walk them to the dog park at least once a day when they visit, within 30 minutes of being asked to do so by Amy.

8. To fill the refrigerator with fresh OJ from Fairway for Jed on days when he is in town.

9. To keep the pillows in the living room in the right place and PLUMPED and to clean the glass table with Windex whenever it is used.

ADDITIONALLY, Sophia and Louisa agree that the above duties and conditions will not be excused even in the event of illness, hangovers, migraines, work crises or mental breakdowns (whether their own or their friends’).

Sophia and Louisa agree that if they violate any one of these conditions, Amy and Jed will have the right to get the Superintendent or a doorman to restrain them from entering the apartment; and to change the locks.
