Authors: Sorry to Rain on Your Twin Obsession Parade, But Twins Are Risky, Period

twins-1628843_1280

Twins are always considered a blessing and lately, they’ve been getting even more glorification, especially with celebs like Beyonce and Amal Clooney making recent headlines for the fact they are carrying twins.

But as with any celebration, there are those who will swoop in to offer a reality check. Like one Daily Mail columnist, Jill Foster, herself a mom, who wrote about how twin pregnancies are high risk and come with a boat load of additional concerns, cautions and care that mom (and dad) must undertake.

“Multiple births are fraught with risk, no matter how rich you are,” Foster writes in a recent column. “Carrying my twin girls was the most arduous and terrifying thing I’ve done — and the professionals agree with me.”

She quotes consultant obstetrician and gynecologist Shazia Malik, a sub-specialist in reproductive medicine at London’s Portland Hospital, who said that “people underestimate the risks of a multiple pregnancy.”

There is a risk “of miscarriage, stillbirth or pre-term birth is around five times higher than a singleton pregnancy. Once premature babies are born, they may spend several weeks or even months in Special Care and may have growth restriction, brain damage, problems with vision and later have developmental delay,” Malik said.

She adds: “There’s a higher risk to the mother, too, of developing gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, which could lead to death.”

Foster says her identical twin daughters were conceived without medical intervention but that she went thru her pregnancy in fear because her twins developed in the same sac, increasing the chances of dual death were something to go wrong.

“At 11 weeks’ pregnant, I’d learned that the babies were growing in the same amniotic sac. Called a mono-amniotic pregnancy, it meant their umbilical cords could easily become entwined and strangulated.

“Not even one baby would survive if this happened. They would live or die together, and death would be sudden or spontaneous. I lived my pregnancy on a knife edge. It seemed sensible to only tell my closest family and friends.”

She also thinks she suffered post partum depression which is common among moms of multiples.

According to the Twins and Multiple Birth Association (TAMBA), mothers of multiples have almost twice the average risk of postnatal depression and it tends to last longer and can still require treatment up to seven years after the birth.

Then there are the myths of twin pregnancies.  In a new book Twin Mythconceptions: False Beliefs, Fables, and Facts about TwinsDr. Nancy L. Segal attempts to bust over 70 myths regarding twin pregnancies.

Here are some of the top 10 Myths, (many of which we have blogged about before here on Bellyitch), Dr. Segal has identified:

the “Top 10” myths or beliefs about twins, which include:

  • Identical twins can communicate by extrasensory perception or ESP (False)

o   There is no scientific evidence that twins exchange thoughts or ideas by reading each other’s minds—identical twins’ social closeness is better explained by studies showing that their common genes underlie their within-pair communication skills.

  • Older mothers are more likely to conceive fraternal twins than younger mothers (True)

o   Since releasing two eggs at the same time is not typical, this is possibly a reflection of the aging process.

  • Identical twins have identical fingerprints (False)

o   These features, which develop between the 10th and 25th gestational week, are affected by factors such as temperature, intrauterine position and density of amniotic fluid near the fingers.

  • Your consumption of yams and other dietary choices increase the chances of conceiving fraternal twins (True)

o   It is thought that the white yam contains fertility-inducing properties that trick the female body into releasing hormones that promote ovulation–this may partly explain the high fraternal twinning rate among the Yorùbá of western Nigeria.

Dr. Segal is currently Professor of Psychology at California State University, Fullerton and Director of the Twin Studies Center. She has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as four highly acclaimed books on twins.

The moral of the story is celebrate twin births. Admire them. Dote on moms carrying twins. Offer help and support to family and friends who deliver twins, especially afterwards, given the higher PPD risk. But certainly, be very aware that they are risky pregnancies and deserve extra care and consideration before venturing into IVF in hopes of carrying them if you cannot conceive a set without medical intervention. Don’t let these celebrities out here lull you into a fairy tale la la land.

Beyonce Shared Some Never Before Seen Labor and Delivery Footage Recently

beyonce-new-photos

For Beyonce and Jay-Z‘s 9th wedding anniversary on April 4, the mega star released a clip a lovely love song, assumingly dedicated to her love, a single “Die With You“. She posted it on Instagram  and the small sample of the lovely tune plays to the video background of home video footage from her pregnancy with daughter Blue Ivy.

bey2

It’s tender and very personal because it reveals never before seen footage of her wedding, getting the number IV tattooed on her fingers and inside the labor and delivery room, moments before she gave birth.

Not only was it a good way to promote her latest track but it also seemed to get back at those incessant rumors and naysayers who do not believe she carried her first child. She’s never been able to shake those who believe she used a surrogate and probably will never convince them otherwise, but these beautiful moments make us smile because we’ve always been a believer.

Do it for your fans and believers, mama. Ignore the rest. The video also includes video of Blue kissing her bare belly full of the brand new twins she and Jay are expecting.

Oh and she also pitched a playlist that includes this song and 63 other tracks with tunes from Michael Jackson, Kanye and Bill Withers. Hmmm! All of our faves in a close to 5 hour playlist. We’re down. But…you gotta get Tidal first to enjoy it! Smart given she and her hubby are part owners of the subscription streaming service.

Beyonce and Jay-Z had a date night and what do you do when you get all dressed up in your nice clothes to go somewhere fancy? You take pics and have an impromptu photo shoot, of course! I am almost 100% certain Jay-Z is the photographer behind the recent slew of photos Beyonce posted on her Tumblr blog this weekend.  Here are some of the gorgeous photos of the expectant star all dressed up in an eggplant bump hugging long sleeve dress with runching on the side:

5 Performers who Appeared Very Pregnant in Their Music Videos

img_3673

A long time ago, women were hidden away when pregnant and certainly, they weren’t flaunted in the media or music videos.

In modern times, beautiful pregnant women are featured prominently as with a very 9-month pregnant Natalie Portman, days before giving birth in the music video for James Blake’s  song “My Willing Heart,” released on Monday.

But she isn’t the first one. Beyonce, P!nk, Deborah Cox, and Whitney Houston have also appeared very pregnant in music videos for their songs

In 2011, Beyonce was pregnant with her daughter Blue Ivy in her Countdown Video. That year, P!nk was also visibly pregnant with her daughter Willow in her girls empowerment song “F*&>Perfect”.

Before then, Canadian -born artist Deborah Cox showed off her 3rd trimester belly in the later frames of her “Beautiful U R” video” which is also about female empowerment and self esteem.  Finally, Whitney Houston, was also uplifting women in her remake of Chaka Khan‘s “I’m Every Woman” and was pregnant with her daughter Bobbi Kristina. (RIP to both of them)

Beyonce and Jay-Z Found out the Sex of Twins But Are Staying Mum

jay-z-beyonce-pregnant

We are closer than ever to meeting Beyoncé‘s twin bundles of joy.

E! News has an exclusive update about the music superstar’s second pregnancy, and how she’s embracing every aspect along the way. A source admits that although Bey is having a “harder time this pregnancy with keeping up her energy,” she isn’t letting it ruin the experience.

“She loves being pregnant,” our insider adds.

The Lemonade artist has maintained her typically health-conscious diet, but the source tells E! News, “She splurges when she wants to and hasn’t taken her weight gain as a negative thing. She is a confident women in her skin whatever size she is [and] embraces it.”

And yes, the Carter family knows the sex of their babies-to-be but (as expected) are staying mum. That hasn’t stopped the Beyhive from diving deep into a few conspiracy theories, though…

On her marriage to Jay Z, our insider explains the all-star couple is still in the best place. “The love [between Jay Z and Beyoncé] is authentic and real,” the source shares, adding, “Jay is a good dad and husband. He’d do anything for Bey.”

For those heading to the desert for Coachella next month, we have some new insight into the reason why the pregnant star pulled out of headlining the music festival.

We’re told Bey “wanted to play Coachella,” but because her doctors advised to not push herself, as our source explained she “always” does, she delayed her performance until 2018.

Besides, we might have two Carter mini-me’s to gush over by that time anyway!

A Pregnant Natalie Portman Swims Bare Belly in James Blake’s Newest Video

natalie-portman-2

Days before giving birth, Natalie Portman starred in the recently released music video for James Blake’s  song “My Willing Heart,” released on Monday.

In the black and white video which Anna Rose Holmer directed, the Jackie and The Black Swan actress floats in a swimming pool and is later seen in a room caressing her bare baby belly to the melodic but haunting song.

The Oscar- winning actress and her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied welcomed daughter Amala days after wrapping up shooting of the video. The couple also have a 5-year-old son, Aleph.

The song appears on the British singer/songwriter’s critically acclaimed 2016 album, “The Colour in Anything.” He is famous for experimenting with different styles of music, including electronic and rap.

Natalie may have been one of the first celeb women to appear in a music video so close to delivery but she wasn’t the first to shoot a video while heavily pregnant.

Expectant mama Beyoncé shared some updated baby bump photos via Instagram Saturday.

“Backstage after the Alvin Ailey dancers performance it was magnificent,” Lawson Instagrammed the group photo backstage. “With my beautiful Tina’s Angels and with a few of the mentors. My very gracious daughter who met the girls and spent some time with them and made their day!”

Beyonce ‘BumpWatch’ News: The Latest

ffa77cb4-7ec8-4d57-b735-47c71e9502e8

Normally, I do a Bellyitch Bumpwatch roundup of various pregnant celebs but today, there is so much Beyonce news, the Stan in me will focus this post on Mrs. Carter news only.

(Smile)

Fans are going wild over the fact that the mega pop star recycled the large silver circular earrings she wore  in the “If I Were A Boy” video and speculating that she did so to relay subliminally to the world that she is having twin boys. (Cosmo)

img_3287The record Grammy nominated and winning start wore a cute black velvet mini dress that she accessorized with a black choker and black boots to her step dad Richard Lawson’s birthday party this week.

The Lemonade singer is also reportedly obsessed over the extra weight gain she’s had which is very common especially with twin pregnancies. (Hollywood Life)

And the platinum-selling artist is also reportedly excercising a bunch to stave off the excessive weight gain. (US Weekly)

And it is cool to note that she is being adventurous by wearing color durinf a time that most expecting women stick with the color black as it is slimming (See above collage of recent fashion)

We Imagine These are The Euorpean Trucks for the Twin Babies Jay-Z Rapped About

beyon-twin-mercedes

During a February 2, 2017 interview, Beyonce’s dad Matthew Knowles suggested that Queen Bey is expecting a baby boy and baby girl this year but in DJ Khaled‘s song “Shining” that she and husband Jay-Z guest performed on a week later, Jay seemed to suggest that he didn’t know what the sex of the babies are.

Let’s back up:

Knowles, who currently is an entertainment assistant professor at Texas Southern University, learned about the pregnancy the same time we all did because Bey didn’t tell him before announcing it to the world via her artsy pregnancy announcement.

But during a sit down chat with Insider, the ex –Destiny’s Child manager shared the circumstances under which he learned/

“I was shocked,” Knowles told the site. “Let me tell you what happened. I got a first text, and I was like, ‘Why is this person saying congratulations?’ Then I get a second text from one of my students at Texas Southern, and I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ He was like, ‘Go to the web.’ I didn’t know myself.”

That might have been a good decision by  because Matthew might have accidentally spilled the beans too soon.

During the Insider interview, the talent manager and university instructor went on to possibly reveal the sex of the babies.

“And Blue Ivy is going to have some brothers and sisters. She is already excited,” he said.

When the interviewer pressed for a confirmation that Bey was going to have a girl and boy, Knowles quickly flipped the script.

He said he was just talking in general.

Mmmm hmmmm! No wonder Yonce didn’t tell dear old dad the news in advance. He plum would have revealed it too soon but he wouldn’t have been the first. In 2011, Kelly Rowland also slipped up during an interview and let people know about Blue’s gender before Bey and Jay could.

Both Rowland, who is like a sister, and of course Matthew, who is a grandfather to Mrs. Sean “Jay-Z” Carter’s 5-year old daughter Blue Ivy and Solange Knowles‘ 12-year old son, Daniel, would be forgiven.

He may be right about guessing though.

A week later, the same day Beyonce performed on the Grammy Awards, DJ Khaled released a single from his upcoming album titled, “Shining” (that’s my jam) but any way, on the song, Jay-Z has a few bars which seem to indicate that he is clueless (or was clueless back when he penned the lyrics) as to the baby’s gender. On the song, he raps:

One ain’t enough, I need two
That night I mix the Ace with the D’us’
Hit a triple-double in the Garden
I done my left wrist like I’m Harden (swish)
Ran to the dealer, bought twin Mercedes’
The European trucks for the twin babies
Don’t let me have a son, I’m a fool (ooooh)
Send him to school in all my jewels
I want a boy and girl I fight for truth
Whatever God give me, I’m cool

LISTEN to the entire thing here:

We imagine what those twin European (his and hers) Mercedes would look like in the above collage, specifically, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS63. Below, check out actor-comedian Kevin Hart in front of his own Mercedes truck that he showed off his truck on social media recently. Something tells us these trucks will grow in popularity soon especially after the twin babies are born.

Brazilian Sculptor Creates Grammy Baby Bump Beyonce Barbie

bey-doll

The pregnant Beyonce tributes aren’t ending with copycat celebs and lip art recreation. A Brazilian doll maker has recreated the Grammy-performing pregnant Beyonce in a new custom “Barbie” doll.

Marcus Vinícius da Silva Bernardo, a 47-year-old sculptor who goes by Marcus Baby, immortalized Queen Bey’s golden goddess look in this new doll. da Silva Bernanrdo said it took him about a week to finish the work.

‘I did this job in five days and her clothes are made with gold rhinestones, metal, chains, rings, and wire,” the extravagant artist shares. “The doll has a plastic pregnant belly and also a fake piercing in her belly button, same as the original Beyoncé.”

He has re-created Mrs. Carter before but also other celebrities. “I have 250 other dolls which are inspired by other celebrities,”he shared with the Daily Mail while letting everyone know that they are not for sale. “they are only for myself. I don’t sell to anyone.”

Beyoncé is expecting a pair of twins with her husband, rapper and business mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. During her Grammy performance last month, the pop icon did a 9-minute medley of some of the melodic ballads from her critically acclaimed last album,”Lemonade“, including “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles.

During the performance, she wore a stunning gold metallic and bump-revealing two-piece ensemble embellished with jewels, rhinestones and an ornate cape and crown.

Marcus Baby did an excellent job capturing all of the various moves from the show.
