The 5 Clues Fans Used to Determine Nicki Minaj was Pregnant Before She Announced

Congratulations are in order to rapper Nicki Minaj  who is expecting her first child with her husband Kenneth Petty as she announced her news on her Instagram yesterday to the surprise of none of the Internet sleuths who had already recognized all the clues that she was pregnant, beginning with speculation last month when she posted a curious photo trying to conceal her bump in high rise bikini bottoms.

“Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes,” Minaj captioned the third in a set of formal colorful maternity photos where she is sitting on a pink couch. The last  of the photos is her draped in white in an editorial shot made to look angelic, taken by famed photographer David LaChappelle.

Part of being a celebrity woman of child bearing years is that you have people constantly speculating about whether or not you are pregnant. It can frustrating especially if you had been actively trying but keep having to see and respond or ignore rumors published in the tabloids or social media. Model Chrissy Teigen, actress Gabrielle Union and many others suffered with infertility while batting down insenstive demands from people asking when they would be having their first chilld.

However, when the moment that a star does get pregnant, she then has the challenge that many women have of trying to keep it private for at least the first three months when the risk for miscarriage is the highest. After the first trimester, the chances of that mom-to-be carrying a baby full term and having a healthy labor and delivery shoots up exponentialy.

Still, sometimes the public guesses right because there are tell tale signs and Minaj displayed them ALL!!!

After the Super Bass performer made her announcement, many fans said in the comment sections under news reports that the news was of no surprise to them based on the various clues that exist when a woman in the spotlight is hiding her pregnancy:

1. She only shared head shots in social media

For women who famously show off their fab bods at every chance they get, seeing them suddenly stick to posting head shots inscial meida is a dead giveaway that they are trying to perhaps hide weight gain in the tummy area and elsewhere.

For the weeks leading up to the announcement the Anaconda rapper shared photos of her self performing songs with only her head in the shot.

2. She wore clothes that covered her belly.

Getty

You can hide your body by carefully selecting what you post but unless you plan to live a hermit life or escape to another country, then there is a high liklihood that the paparazzi will spot you out and about.

When Kylie Jenner was secrety pregnant with her daughter Stormi, fans speculated her condition because she wore baggy clothes. Her sister, Khloe Kardashian, revealed that she used an A-line coat to hide her bump until she announced the news that she was expecting a baby.

If you are pregnant during Award season, as Cardi B was, you can get your stylist to design outfits that creatively conceal your bump.

Most recently, currently pregant stars, actress Sophie Turner and model Gigi Hadid were spotted in super baggy clothes and reported frequently as being pregnant in the gossip press. The oversized PJs were a dead give away Hadid and boyfriend Zayn Malik were expecting their first child together even before she confirmed her news last week.

3. She drops out of public light

Similarly, it is always suspicious when women who usually crave the spotlight drop out of the public eye. That too is a signal they may be secretly expecting.  On the real, Minaj literally told the world she was baby making when she quit music via Twitter last September to start her family.  But because she had quit Twitter before after having beefs with her ex Meek Mill, rap nemesis Remy Ma, not a lot of people took the announcement seriously.

The quarantine period was very convenient for Jessica Biel to lay low and incubate a whole other person. She and her musician/producer husband Justin Timberlake reportedly welcomed their second child recently and no one knew. They tore a page out of Ana Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias‘ book when those two had a whole set of twins on the download back in 2017.

Some have tried to keep the secret for the total nine months and have come close.

Evangeline Lily and Jennifer Hudson got caught by paparazzi both around 8 months pregnant. They were in remote places where there is no Hollywood scrutiny but still got busted.

Others succeed.

In 2018,  How to Get Away with Murder star Karla Souzaand in 2014, Ozark star Laura Linney announced the birth of their first child, respectively, after the baby was already born.

4. She Subconsciouly (or her partner) Touches her Belly

Getty

Last month, Minaj gave yet another clue when she showed a video of Petty rubbing her belly. In other years, the maternal subtle cradle of the tummy is a sign a woman is expecting. It’s a subcouncous and natural maneuver which is a sign.

5. Her face looks fuller

Weight gain is a sign of pregnancy and even for women who manage to not pack on the pounds, a dead giveaway is a fuller rounder face. Many fans speculated and noticed that in the video for Trollz with Ta, Minaj face looked significantly more cherubic than usual.

Well there you have it. If you are a woman in the lime light and seek to totally hide your pregnancy from the media and the public, avoid doing any of the above. Good luck!

Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade Welcome Daughter via Surrogate

Congratulations to actress Gabrielle Union and her husband Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade who welcomed a daughter via a surrogate last night.

The Being Mary Jane star announced the news with a poem starting with the lyrics of Bill Withers‘ song “Lovely Day” on her Instagram and Twitter accounts this afternoon, captioning three photos of her and the NBA player giving “skin-to-skin” contact with their newborn:

When I wake up in the mornin’ love

And the sunlight hurts my eyes

And there’s something without warning, love

Bears heavy on my mind

Then I look at you

And the world’s alright with me

Just one look at you

And I know its gonna be

A lovely day

A lovely day ?

A LOVELY DAY ?????? We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days. Welcome to the party sweet girl! #onelastdance #skintoskin@dwyanewade ❤??

Wade shared an identical photo and share on his Twitter and Instagram accounts as well. In the series of photos, Union lays in a hospital bed and bonds with the baby using a method that is important for newborn’s emotional development and growth after birth called Kangaroo care, named for the Australian marsupials that carry their newborn in their pouches shortly after birth.

The actress, who got her biggest break from her role in the cult classic pop culture film  Bring It On star had opened up about suffering through 9 miscarriages in a recent best-selling autobiography she released last year, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.

The Breaking In star writes in the book, which is a collection of essays, “for three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant—I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Sooo happy for them right now!! Congrats!!!! The celebrity baby girl boom continues! No news yet on the sweet girl’s name. Stay tuned!

Yellow, Gold and Celestial Beings at Met Ball 2018 Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

So the annual fundraising gala to mark the opening of the new Spring exhibit at The Metropolitan Gallery of Art in New York City went down last night.

As with this event every years, guests are asked to come dressed according to the theme of the new exhibit: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination. This year’s official hosts were Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Amal Clooney (above in Richard Quinn) and Donatella Versace (who dressed a lot of the attendees this year)

With a theme like that not only do you expect some backlash at what could be expected as a parade of sacrilegiousness, but you sorely expect some interpretations of Angels, the Virgin Mary, the Pope and Cardinals! They all were there last night too.

We just cover the moms and other celeb women we have frequently covered starting with two moms-to-be:  Homeland star Claire Danes who is expecting her second child with husband Hugh Dancy and rapper and reality TV star Cardi B who is expecting her first child with her fiance rapper Offset.

Danes wore a custom floor-length empire waist Marni precious duchesse  red, magenta and caramel color block gown paired with Marni Monile handbag  and multicolour platform sandals.

Cardi looked regal in a custom golden bejeweled white Moschino gown. She was accompanied to the event by designer Jeremy Scott though her fiancé was there with the other two members of his group, Migos.

Of our other Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums, we noticed a few trends within the theme.

Gold was one. Kerry Washington in a gorgeous floor-length Ralph Lauren dress with her afro serving as a halo! Evan Rachel Wood, Kim Kardashian-West in Versace and Irina Shayk.

We saw structure, ornateness and royal crimson in Solange‘s Iris Van Harper ensemble, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez‘s spectacular Balmain modern take on Joan of Arc and Scarlett Johanssson

Yellow was a prevalent theme and color and everyone wearing it last night looked stunning including Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren, Huma Abedin and Gabrielle Union in Prabal Gurung dress, Tasaki jewels, Stuart Weitzman shoes and a Tyler Ellis clutch.

Anne Hathaway went with volume in her  Valentino gown which she paired did James Banks earrings, a The Code bracelet and Jimmy Choo heels.

Meanwhile, Gisele Bundchen did old Hollywood glam but in an environmentally friendly way by working with Versacd to repurpose an old dress.

“Thank you @versace for working so hard to make me an eco dress. The fabric and lining used are both 100% organic silk ecologically dyed, the threads are 100% organic cotton and everything is certificated as GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard,” she captioned a photo of herself in the dress before heading out to the ball.

Kylie Jenner made her first official official red carpet appearance in a black velvet Alexander Wang gown with Chopard jewelry with her beau rapper Travis Scott since the two welcomed their first child together, daughter Storming

Uma Thurman was accompanied to the event by Maya Hawke, her daughter with Ex Ethan Hawke and  donned a white Gabriela Hearst dress, Giampiero Bodino jewelry, and Manolo Blahnik heels

Most people played it safe but understandingly so because they probably didn’t want to cross the line and have to dodge lightning bolts! ha!

During the event, Taylor welcomes her mother, Nikki, and acknowledges the tremendous impact that she made in Taylor’s life before welcoming surprise guest Bobby Brown to the stage.

Gabrielle Union also will be seen tonight showering her mom Theresa with praise and thanking her for raising Gabrielle in a home filled with love, learning and acceptance before surprising her mom with an appearance by award-winning recording artist Ne-Yo who performs a medley of his hit singles “Good Man” and “Miss Independent.”

Jhené Aiko will be joined on stage by her daughter Namiko Love to perform a poem for her mother, and sing a song that they wrote together, “Sing To Me.”

The phenom introduces her newest song “Queen” before getting the crowd on their feet with her rendition of the iconic hit “I’m Every Woman.”

After joking that his mom Teresa didn’t know what football was until he got to college, Colin Kaepernick talks about what his life was like growing up in a world where the privilege of his parents did not always protect him. He praises his mom for doing everything she could to give him the best possible life and says that she “chose [him]” and she’s “stuck with [him]!” Teresa joins him on stage, since “moms always have the final word” and says that Colin was always a wonderful son, student and athlete, and she’s overwhelmed with pride, even if he “doesn’t call his mom enough!”

In a sweet video message, Sean “Diddy” Combs and five of his children talk about all the things they love most about their “Mimi,” and Diddy takes the stage to recognize the tremendous sacrifice that his mom Janice made to ensure that he always had everything he needed.

Gabrielle Union’s 9 Miscarriages Show Why You Shouldn’t Make Assumptions About Childless Women

Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union opens up about suffering 8 or 9 miscarriages, and having fertility struggles in her new book, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.”

The actress writes in the book, which is a collection of essays, “for three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant—I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Union and Miami Heat NBA basketball player Dwyane Wade have been married since 2014.

She also talks about how being a stepmom to her husband’s three sons from previous relationships, 15-year old Zaire, 10-year old Zion and 3-year old Xavier changed her mind on wanting to have her own children.

“I never wanted kids,” she shared. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”

In a December 2014  interview with Uptown magazine, Union opened up about that desire.

“I think my brain and my heart are screaming baby fever… I’ve lasted 42 years without having a human being come from one of my orifices and I feel okay and fulfilled and happy,” she said. “If it does happen, it’s a miracle—a medical miracle at least. I mean, we’d love to. We’ll see what my ovaries say.”

She told the site that if she does not conceive, she will be okay. “I have really awesome stepkids, so I feel equally as fulfilled.”

But alas, we know that the plans to have a baby had started since way back then and she is still on that journey.

While working on starting her family, the Birth of a Nation actress has to endure the pain of constant rumors about her being pregnant.

Ugh! The dreaded celebrity bump watch speculation!

“Once a month I look like I’m in my second trimester because I’m bloated,” she shared, referring to the side-effects of her IVF injections. “It leads to the questions and it leads to the rumors and anytime I go into a doctor’s office I feel like I’m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don’t want people to speculate.”

Then it’s the constant prodding by well-meaning people who just ask invasive and insensitive questions.

“For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” Union said. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”

And there you have it! The reason why one should never make presumptions and impose on women’s private live about family-starting.
