Creative Holistic Ways to Fight Pregnancy Blues

Getting confirmation that you’re pregnant is usually a moment filled with absolute euphoria. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for each day that follows. Being pregnant and being a parent later on will be filled with amazing moments but also challenges, crises and even a few tears.

What you need is an arsenal of remedies to fight the onslaught of ‘feeling blue’ that’s bound to come your way. Whether it’s momentary feelings or long bouts of depression, knowing there are methods to counter those feelings may get you through the day a little easier.

The good news: Even your favorite topic—fashion—can help with that.

We listed five tips that you can try the next time the day seems darker than usual.

Watch What Colors You Put On

It’s common knowledge in marketing that colors communicate certain messages. Businesses use this approach to influence customers, partners and even their employees. Red is a popular business color because it communicates power.

You can use this approach by putting on certain colors to spark emotions in your mind:

  • Blue can calm you down
  • Black is all about feeling stylish
  • Green represents growth and could remind you of the wonderful journey of life you’re part of
  • Grey does bring some calm but can also completely dampen your mood, so put those dull pants at the bottom of the cupboard
  • Yellow can spark a feeling of warmth and comfort

A good idea is stocking up on the right colored pregnancy wear as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, so you’re ready for whatever comes.

You Have the Right to Buy Something New

Of course, stocking up doesn’t mean you can’t do some shopping later on. Fatigue often leads to pregnant women and young parents not taking much care with their personal appearance:

  • Wearing worn clothes
  • Not washing their hair
  • Putting on ill-fitting outfits

Unfortunately this often leads to feeling even worse as you’re embarrassed about not looking as good as those around you.

So, why not take yourself on a shopping spree? A new outfit that fits well and is comfortable is just the ticket to get you feeling better. Also, if you’re anything like most people you’ll look forward to putting on that new item. The excitement and the new look may boost your emotions.

Keep it Comfortable but Balanced

Being pregnant often leads to physical discomfort. While you’re on a shopping spree, picking clothes that are more comfortable could solve some of your frustrations. Just be careful: Dressing in baggy clothes that don’t compliment your look all the time could make you feel less positive about yourself.

Manage Others’ Perception of You

Let’s face it: We all want to look good in our own but also other people’s eyes. Putting on weight could be a huge factor in losing faith in your own appearance.

So why not use fashion to your benefit:

  • Use bold jewelry on your wrist and neck to draw attention away from your stomach and hips.
  • Wearing black is always slimming
  • Put makeup on even if you don’t feel like it so people focus on your face.

That’s the power of fashion!

Last Tip: Use the Power of Favorites

If all else fails and the blues really hit you, don’t underestimate the power of a favorite piece of clothing. It can provide the comfort you need or even make you smile when you remember memories associated with other times you wore it.

Use fashion and come to your own rescue. You’ve got this!

STUDY: Antiviral drug stops HBV passage during pregnancy

Real People: Hands Holding Caucasian Sleeping Newborn Baby Girl

Pregnant women with hepatitis B may not have to worry that they will pass on the virus to their babies thanks to new research that found the antiviral drug telbibudine prevents the passage of the virus (HBV) to baby.

The study, which is published in the Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, was conducted on 450 HBV-positive pregnant women in their second or third trimester who had a significant amount of the HBV virus in their blood. Of those women, 279 received 600mg of telbivudine daily, and the remaining 171 refused to take the medicine and were used as controls.

When scientists examined their babies six months after born, they found that none of the infants whose mothers were given telbivudine tested positive for HBV, compared to 14.7 percent of infants in the control group.

“If we are to decrease the global burden of hepatitis B, we need to start by addressing mother-to-infant transmission, which is the primary pathway of HBV infection,” study author Yuming Wang from Institute for Infectious Diseases at Southwest Hospital in Chongqing, China said in a release about the findings. “We found that telbivudine not only eliminated vertical transmission of HBV from pregnant women to theirs infants, but that it is also safe and well tolerated by women and infants.”

Tips on getting pregnant after using birth control

Getting pregnant after birth control can pose a number of challenges. The most technically difficult of the lot is the pill that play around with your hormonal balance. So if you are using contraception and the pill or anything else, you need proper guidelines on how to conceive after they stop using contraception. You may be disappointed if you start trying for a baby without knowing the appropriate time frame to conceive.

New Guidelines: Pregnant women need to eat more fish

New guidelines recommend that women eat at least 8 ounces of seafood that is low in mercury two to three times per week.
Examples of low mercury fish include shrimp, salmon, tilapia and cod.  Each has good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, but health officials suggest pregnant women to avoid swordfish, tile fish, king mackerel and shark which are very high in mercury.
Doctors say that pregnant women can eat deep sea tuna but only about once a week.

Would you use any of these words to describe your body after having a baby?

Australia photographer Taryn Brumfitt asked 100 women on the street to give her one word to describe their bodies, these were some of the answers they gave her:

Wobbly

Imperfect

Stumpy

Very average

Short

Fat

Frumpy

Gross

Disgusting

Digusting.

Disgusting.

Now Brumfitt is raising money via Kickstarter to produce a documentary called “EMBRACE” that will explore the origins of women body shaming and loathing.
The campaign started as part of her own journey to lose weight and achieve the perfect body. To get it, she entered herself into a body-building competition, but then she had a baby.
Her body changed but she said she loved to love that imperfect body.
What has really been the catalyst is a “Before-After” photo she posted on her Body Image group’s Facebook page that went viral and grew 3 million likes.
The campaign, which launched on May 10, is already half funded at about $100,000 but has 46 days to go. Something tells us, she will surpass her goal pretty soon.

Tips for coping with allergies while pregnant

It’s that season again! Spring brings all sorts of great things like warmer weather and nicer days but it also is the season for allergies. Not fun if you are pregnant. OnlyMyHealth recently shared a list of tips for pregnant women to help them cope with allergies during pregnancy:
  • Experiment with a nasal saline spray. A nasal saline is just salt water that helps to fight against worsening of allergies during pregnancies. Besides, they are not harmful to the fetus. Spray the nasal saline spray into the nostrils and blow your nose after a minute.
  • Use nasal irrigation with the help of a neti pot. Nasal irrigation helps to flush all the sinus passages out with the help of salt water. Fill the neti pot with a warm salt water solution and flush each nostril out with it.
  • Using a humidifier at night to fill the air with moisture helps to relieve pressure and pain that is associated with the allergies.
  • Use a medicated nasal spray to experience the best results. Medicated nasal sprays help especially when you start using them before the actual onset of the allergies. Consult your doctor about nasal sprays before using one to ensure that the use of one does not hamper the fetus.
  • Allergy medication is a good option provided the other options fail though this option must be avoided during the first trimester. Consult your doctor to find an allergy medication that will work for you during the second and third trimester.
  • If you had been using allergy shots before pregnancy, you can continue using them during pregnancy. It is, however, not recommended to start allergy shots after getting pregnant.

The key to coping with allergies during pregnancy is taking proper medications. Ensure that you talk to your doctor about medication during pregnancy.

Mommy Makeovers: The Poor Woman’s Guide to Safe Plastic Surgery

Recently, stories about women jetting off to South and Central American countries to get low cost plastic surgeries and “mommy makeovers” have circulated widely. Budget conscious women looking to nip and tuck, some after having a baby, are looking for as many alternatives out there and taking risks traveling to nations that do not have the same safety regulations we have here in the US.  Not all women recover and many come back to the US and develop a host of post-operation complications.
Top leading plastic surgeon Dr. Gregory H. Croll offers some other alternatives:
It’s no longer necessary to empty out your life savings to

get the plastic surgery of your dreams. There are many surgeries that you can

get that won’t break the bank. One option many people do when they don’t have a

lot of money for plastic surgery is to travel out of the country or to

somewhere else where plastic surgeries are a bit cheaper. While many people do

decide to do this it can be somewhat risky and can end up costing you a lot in

travel fees, as well. Plus it is always nice to just recuperate after a surgery

in the comfort of your own home, rather a foreign country.
If you just can’t

resist, though…
If you do decide that going out of the county is the route

you want to take, the best countries to do so are South Korea, or Greece and

Italy if you don’t want to go quite as far. The United States is the fourth best

country for plastic surgery, so if you aren’t going to one of the other three,

the US is the best bet for getting the best quality procedure for your dollar.

South Korea is the best place for plastic surgery because of the number of

skilled plastic surgeons that charge reasonable prices. Plastic surgeries are

also quite popular in South Korea, with the most popular surgery being double eyelid

surgery for people who want more Western-looking eyes. If you’re unable to

travel, or would rather get a plastic surgery at home in the US, there are

other options for cheap plastic surgeries.
Don’t Forget to Ask

for Discounts
Another thing you should try if you are getting a plastic

surgery is to ask your surgeon if there are any discounts. Many physicians in

the field are offering specials and price negotiation for popular procedures. The

most popular time to get plastic surgery is during the school year, when

parents can send kids to school, so if you can plan to get your surgery done

during the summer there are much better chances of getting a discount. Most

people don’t want to have to recover during the summer, but if you aren’t

worried about that you can save a lot of money by getting your surgery done

then.
Consolidate Surgeries

If you want to get more than one surgery done, you can also

save money by getting them done simultaneously. This not only saves you and the

surgeon money, but it can really work better for you as well. That way if you

have to ask off work for recuperating time, you are recuperating from both

surgeries instead of having to ask off for days for two separate surgeries. It

can also save money and time for both you and the surgeon because you only have

to go under the knife once.
Surgery Payment Plans

May Be Available
Sometimes you might make enough money for the surgery, not

have it right at the time that you need it. In this case, many surgeons offer

surgery payment plans, so you don’t have to pay a surgery off right away. Try

other options for reducing price first, though, because this option can easily

get you into debt if you’re not careful and then you have a whole other set of

problems.
Don’t Let Cheap

Interfere with Quality
These are just a few ways you might be able to save on

plastic surgery. But always remember that you want to make sure you are getting

a quality surgery. Ask around and make sure you know all the details about your

surgery before you get one. Especially if the procedure is abnormally

underpriced, you might want to listen to your gut if you are getting a bad

feeling about a plastic surgeon, because plastic surgeries aren’t easily

reversed. It will cost a lot of money to fix a botched surgery, which will

completely erase any savings you might have gotten original. Always listen to

your instinct and make sure you are talking to a certified surgeon. You can

find that out on this

website.
