American Music Awards Red Carpet {The Moms}

In continuing the tradition of showcasing moms on the Red Carpets at Award Shows all year long, here is what the moms we’ve covered on this blog wore at the 47th Annual American Music Awards show which took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California on November 24th.

Heid Klum dressed the best I have ever seen her and less pageantry in a cute feathered mini dress by Monsoori. It was my fave look of then all actually.

Christina Alguilera appeared in a white caped draping gown by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Ciara covered up her svelte shape in an electric blue pantsuit by Balmain.

Meanwhile, actress and director Regina King showed up and showed out in all black regal look by  Ashi Studio and 2nd-time mom-to-be Jenna Dewan outfitted her bump in Emporio Armani.

Carrie Underwood rocked a high split with her purple gown by designer Stephanie Costello.

How Regina King’s Decision To Put Her Son First Skyrocketed Her Career

One of my all time fave actress, directors and producers Regina King changed the entire trajectory of her storied and award-winning acting career by choosing to put her child first.

It started after the former child star (who played “Brenda” on the 1980s NBC hit 227) had her son Ian in 1996 with her then husband Ian Alexander Sr.

“I took a break from making films,” she explained to W magazine in its 2019 Hollywood issue released in January around award season. “My son, Ian, was getting to the age, around sixth grade, when kids are starting to spread their wings, and everything that was being offered to me was outside of Los Angeles, except for TV. I didn’t want to travel to make films.”

Because of that move, the If Beale Street Could Talk Oscar nominee focused her career on the small screen.

“I like to say I was one of the first movie actors who made the leap into television,” she said to the interviewer who asked if her silver screen role in Beale, the first feature film after a 10 year break was a comeback film

“I like to use the LL Cool J song: ‘Don’t call it comeback. I been here for years.’

In a 2018 interview with SheKnows.com, the back-to-back Emmy Winner for the American Crime anthology series said, “I did not want to homeschool my son. I didn’t want to have to leave him at home and miss out on all those little milestones and triumphs that happen in a growing child’s life.”

Love it! And loved her while starring as a police officer in the NBC-turned- TBS cop drama Southland in a role written just for her in 2009.

From there, as E! Online summarized earlier this year, the “career renaissance began, with roles in American Crime, The Leftovers, and Seven Seconds coming one after the other. ”

Then, the Boyz In the Hood alum started to clean up at the awards shows.

Her first Emmy win, for work in the first season of ABC‘s anthology series American Crime, came in 2015, with another following suit a year later. At the same time, she began developing a serious passion for directing. Since helming a 2013 episode of Southland, she’s gone on to direct episodes of Scandal, This Is Us, Shameless, The Good Doctor, and Insecure

In May, it was anounced that King has just inked a first-look deal with Netflix to produce films and television series.

Keeping it all in the family, her sister, Reina, will be head of production, Huffpo reported.

King is proof positive that putting family first is not always a hazard to progress on a career!

The 2019 Golden Globes Awards Red Carpet Trends

I was cheering on a lot of the celeb moms I’ve featured on this blog during tonight’s airing of the Golden Globes Awards!

Congrats to Regina King for her win for her supporting actress role in the film If Beale Street Could TalkThe 227, Boyz In the Hood and American Crime alum used her time giving her acceptance speech to advocate for the Time’s Up x2 movement and challenged herself to make her projects fully gender equal in the future.

“In the next two years, and it’s going to be hard, I’m making a vow that every thing I produce…[will be] 50% women,” King said. “And I challenge everyone out there who is in a position of power, in all industries, I challenge you to challenge yourself and stand with us in solidarity and do the same.”

Bravo! I love this woman! <3

Also, in keeping with my red carpet coverage tradition, I must add that I noticed a few Red Carpet trends worn on some of the celeb moms and others …

Emmy: Congrats to Shocked Winners Thandie Newton and Regina King

The Primetime Emmy Awards went down last night and in lieu of Red Carpet coverage, I’m posting to give a shout out to two of my Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums who won and were visibly shocked about it too: Thandie Newton and Regina King

Newton won for Best Actress, Drama, for her role on Westworld. During her acceptance speech, Newton wished her daughter a happy birthday, accidentally dropped the F-bomb, and then Thanked God…even though she might be an atheist.

“I don’t even believe in god but I’m going to thank her tonight,” said Newton.

Another fave, actress, producer and director Regina King looked shocked when she was announced as the winner of the Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for the TV show she brought to the little screen, Seven Seconds, about a woman whose son is killed in a cycling accident by a police officer, the cover up and the effect of the scandal on a little town.

King had previously won two Emmys in that category for her  work in ABC’s American Crime in 2016.

Watch her acceptance speech:

Not a mom, but I was a watcher and fan of the 1970s/early 80s show Happy Days, and so I was happy to see The Fonz, aka, Henry Winkler win his first ever Emmy Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry at the age of 72.
The amazing moment came 42 years after he was first nominated for his role on Happy Days.

“I only have 37 seconds; I wrote this 43 years ago,” said Winkler, who has been nominated six times in his illustrious career. “Skip Brittenham said to me a long time ago, ‘If you stay at the table long enough, the chips come to you,” and tonight I got to clear the table.”

Yay! Congrats!

Inside ‘POWER’s Naturi Naughton’s Baby Shower (PHOTOS)

Power‘s Naturi Naughton had the most elegant African “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” themed baby shower last month at the Dazzler Hotel in downtown Brooklyn.

Naughton and her longtime beau Ben celebrated the impending arrival at a very festive and exquisitely decorated forum which was also star studded and attended by her co POWER star LaLa Anthony, actresses Regina King (American Crime, The Leftovers) and Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow)  and a Grimm star Russell Horsnby and The Game actor Hosea Chanchez.

“I loved my Afro-Centric theme: ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.’ Primrose Couture Events designed the perfect tribal décor with a village vibe, infused with my Caribbean roots,” the petite star told PEOPLE magazine.

The couple also used the occasion to announce the gender of the baby.

“It’s a girl! My man [longtime boyfriend Ben] and I totally predicted a boy at first,” the former 3LW girl band member told the magazine. “I was so sure because I am having such an easy and stress-free pregnancy and I had heard all these stories about how girls steal your beauty and make you really sick when pregnant. Well … so not true for me.”

naturi4

Ha! We know that’s right. At her shower, Naughton looked stunning and glowed in a white lace frock with her loose ringlets adorned in a light floral crown.  Guests noshed on gold covered oreos, macrons, cake pops, and other tasty delectables perfectly decorated in the theme’s colors of gold and green and had fun cutting up in the photo booth.

But as the night went on, the guests let their hair down and can be seen “jumping up” to some soca music from the Caribbean.

And Naughton, who is also a rapper and excellently played rapper Lil Kim in the movie about the Notorious B.I.G. on the big screen, revived her role on the dance floor to a Lil Kim song.

Naughton told PEOPLE she’s “still feeling pretty good,” but is dealing with one issue many women who have been through pregnancy can relate to.

naturi6

“I’m definitely experiencing the swelling of the feet now though, which sucks, but hey, I get a foot rub every night so I’m loving that part!” she joked while adding that her fave indulgent and cravings are Rice Krispies Treats.

“She puts peanut butter in them and they taste like heaven!” Naughton says. “I can tell the baby is loving them too because there’s a happy dance in my belly after my snack time.”

naturi1

Naughton and Ben are not sharing the baby girl’s name until she arrives.

“I think we are 90 percent settled on a beautiful name that we both love,” adding that she and Ben will decide for sure after her birth but other aspects of baby prep are coming along.

“The nursery is coming together, and it’s hard to resist all the adorable baby girl clothes out there, so her wardrobe is in full effect” she said, though the event is not set to arrive until July so she still has a little bit of time to pull together the last minute nesting.

primrose-couture-events-llc-primrosecoutureevents-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos-1

And July cannot get her fast enough as Naughton is already prepping to be a “mommy and me” type of mom.

naturi2

“Dressing alike, mommy-daughter day dates, singing together and teaching her all the important things I learned from my mother,” Naughton told PEOPLE what she is excited about. “I just want to give her a strong foundation, so she can navigate this crazy world by being a strong and beautiful little girl.”

Given the #WHCD was Light on Celebs This Year, Let’s Look Back At Celebs Who Walked Its Red Carpet Pregnant

The annual White House Correspondents Association dinner has increasingly been a haven for Hollywood Celebrities who walk the red carpet on their way to hob nob with journalism’s elite that cover the White House.

This year was much different.

The current sitting president Donald J. Trump choose to sit it out, a first time since Ronald Reagan  that a President opted to skip the event which usually features a comedian roasting the prez and the media and the pres himself giving a monologue full of self-deprecating humor.

[Even when Reagan skipped it, that was because he was shot on the way in, though to be fair other presidents who were very unpopular at the time Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon have skipped the elite dinner in the past, the only other two since Calvin Coolidge]

This year, the event was also super light on the usual parade of celebrities. That might be a good thing in the eyes of many who have heavily criticized the dinner for becoming to glamourized and Hollywoodized.  Celebrated national TV broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw famously skips it and has been vocal as to his reasons why.

Nonetheless, we usually can spot several celebrity moms we’ve covered in the past to feature on the blog. In the very recent past 8 years, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kristen Bell, Jessica Simpson, Cynthian Nixon, Adriana Lima, Neve Campbell, Emma Watson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, Anna Chlumsky, Julianna Margulies, Katie Couric, Sofia Vergara, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Candace Cameron Bure, model Emily Ratajowski, Vivica A. Fox, Lupita Nyong’o, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, Kendell Jenner, Laverne Cox, Lucy Liu, Gabrielle Union have all attended as guests of various news organizations that purchase tables.

Not this year. We didn’t see any. There were a few celebs and some of DC’s A-listers [read: TV journalists and broadcast reporters] there but that’s about it.  And with Trump declaring war on the media, the White House press corp and DC establishment, none in his administration or celebs friendly to him failed to show up as well.

So…we’re doing the next best thing and flashbacking to all the ones who did show up in years past. Interesting enough, most of them were preggers at the time!

Last year, in 2016, while pregnant with her second child, daughter, Isabella, Kerry Washington attempted to conceal her bump in an A-line one shoulder black mini Victoria Beckham mini dress.

In 2015, Glee alum Naya Rivera looked radiant in a white floor length  Tadashi Shoji evening gown and model Anne V ‘s lovely floral gown rocked that year as well.

In 2014, TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie was six-months pregnant with her first child when she showed up in a pink dress to the event.

Going further back, Anna Paquin was expecting her first children, a pair of twins, with husband Stephen Moyer in 2011 when she attended the event, also affectionately known as the “Nerd Prom”, wearing a chic and elegant silk jersey gown by French designer Herve L. Leroux.

That same year, Reese Witherspoon was also expecting her third child, but first with second husband Jim Toth. She also went with black in a Monique Lhuillier  gown showing her barely there bump at the time.

There you have it! The White House Correspondents Association dinner  has been noteworthy for Bumpwatch coverage history.

2016 Golden Globes: What they Wore; Who Won (PHOTOS)

The 2016 Golden Globes brought out the glamour and glitz as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association set out to honor the top talent in film and television at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Sunday, January 10.

As usual, we highlight the celeb moms we’ve covered in the past who we spotted receiving and presenting awards and shining on the red carpet during arrivals.

A fave of ours, Tarji P. Henson, won her first Golden Globes for her supporting role as Cookie Lyons in the hit FOX drama Empire and another past feature Kate Winslet took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the movie Steve Jobs

Viola Davis presented and was up for a win for Best Actress in a TV drama as was Regina King who had a nod for her role in American Crime. Davis lost to Henson and King lost to the upset of the night, Lady Gaga for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel.

Jennifer Lopez,  Olivia Wilde, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kate Hudson and Maggie Gyllenhaal presented awards.

Here’s what (and who) everyone wore starting with bold colors worn by (above) Olivia Wilde in form fitting sequinned wine-colored custom Michael Kors Collection with quaint and cute vintage Bulgari jewels and clutch with  custom dyed Aldo shoes; Jennifer Lopez in a caped and draped mustard-colored Giambattista Valli accented with Harry Winston jewelry, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a sizzling silver Judith Leiber clutch; Taraji P. Henson in  white, wearing a Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, Stella McCartney, with Kimberly McDonald emeralds and diamonds; and Giuliana Rancic in a gorgeous bright orange Alex Perry gown.

In muted tones but wearing knock out and stand out dresses: Pretty in Pink Kate Hudson in a shimmery crop top and skirt by Michael Kors Collection, a  Jimmy Choo box clutch, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and Forevermark Diamonds jewelry; Heidi Klum also in Marchesa with Stuart Weitzman shoes and Lorraine Schwartz earrings; Regina King stunning in a gold caped Krikor Jabotian gown paired with Rene Caovilla shoes, Coomi earrings and Alan Friedman ring; Maggie Gyllenhaal in a black and gold floral print Marc Jacobs dress with Monolo Blahnik shoes, and Forevermark jewels; and Malin Akerman in a lace Reem Acra peplum bodice gown.

45th Annual NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet Fashion: Kerry Washington & others who wowed (PHOTOS)

Last night, some of our current and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch and other moms hit the red carpet to the  45th NAACP Image Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on February 22, 2014.
Scandal actress and first time mom-to-be Kerry Washington stunned in a custom Thakoon NY dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, a brada clutch and Suzanne Kalan ring.
The  and her cast took home the award for the Outstanding Drama Series award.  She looked stunning pictured with actors Tony Goldwyn, Scott Foley, Columbus Short, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield, Joe Morton, Bellamy Young, and Guillermo Diaz,

Idris Elba, Best Actor nominee for  Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom  and Dad-to-be and with girlfriend Naya Garth, looked dapper in a fitted tux and Louboutin “Dada” flats while posing with 2014 Award season “It” girl actress Lupita  Nyong’o of 12 Years A Slave.  Elba won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for his role in Luther
Nyong’o took home the Best Actress award for her role in that movie award and  looked amazing in a plunging neckline burnt orange Givenchy  pre-Fall 2014 gown with matching sandals and box clutch from the designer with her hair in a parted afro-puff. She acceneted the look with an H. Stern gold cuff and dangling earrings.

A more recent Bellyitch bumpwatch mom Nia Long was nominated for her role in House of Lies and wowed in a jade green  Nicole Miller halter gown Brian Atwood heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo nude basket-weave clutch and Danielle Queller earrings.

Our winner for best body winner actress Regina King, who was nominated for outstanding actress in a drama series, turned heads in Michael Costello, who seems to be the go-to designer for Black Hollywood but seemed to miss in this ill fitting black mermaid dress that looked to constrain the SouthLAnd  star’s toned torso too much.

We have covered mom and soon-to-be surrogate TV personality Sherri Shepherd of The View in the past and last night she worked magic in an off the shoulder shimmery Carmen Marc Valvo gown. The unexpected blue nails were a plus, with the statement accent pieces.
One of the very first moms we featured for being the first to have a reality TV special following her pregnancy, singer and actress Brandy Norwood, won the  Image award for “Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her role on BET’s The Game.  She looked darling and sexy in a black cut out dress during the non-televised dinner show and again the next day during the televised portion of the show in a Jean Fares Couture black lace embellished gown with nude lining.

Even though she didn’t win for her wonderful and talented work in The Butler, advice mom to the world, Ms. Oprah Winfrey looked dazzling in her burnt orange dress while paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela who we lost earlier this year.
