Top Entertainment Stories of 2018

It seems like 2018 was the year of big moments in entertainment.  From box office hits to celebrity engagements, this was definitely a year of highs -and some lows- for the entertainment industry.  Here are a few of the biggest headlines we saw in 2018.

The Royal Wedding

One of the biggest stories of 2018 was the royal union of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.  The British prince and the American actress tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel on May 19th, with an estimated 1.9 billion viewers tuning in around the world.  You would think with that many people watching the couple would be nervous, but Megan and Harry looked happy, poised and gracious when entering and exiting the ceremony.

The star-studded guest list was another reason so many people tuned in to watch the nuptials, with notable figures such as David and Victoria Beckham, James Corden, and even Sir Elton John turning out to the event.  A few months after the wedding came an exciting announcement- the couple is expecting their first child!

Kylie’s Surprise Baby Announcement

One of the most surprising stories in celebrity news this year was the birth of Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott’s first daughter, Stormi.  Up until Stormi’s birth on February 1st, Kyle never confirmed that she was pregnant in the first place!

The announcement came in the form of a video posted to Kylie’s social media accounts on Superbowl Sunday, effectively overshadowing the big game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.  Upon hearing the news, fans of both the reality TV star and the rapper took to social media to congratulate the happy couple, and the rest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan expressed their joy as well.

California Wildfires

Not every piece of news this year was positive.  In late 2018, wildfires began wreaking havoc up and down the state of California.  In addition to civilians, many celebrities were affected by the devastating fires, including Miley Cyrus, Gerard Butler and Neil Young, who lost their homes in the Southern California fire.

Many celebrities came out to show their support during these hard times, and Gerard Butler hosted a star-studded fundraising event with a guest list including Sean Penn, Robin Thicke, Cindy Crawford, and many more famous faces.  Although the California wildfires devastatingly destroyed thousands of homes, many communities have already started to rebuild, thanks to generous donations from civilians and celebrities alike.

A Bachelor Engagement

If you were one of the 7.8 million people who tuned into the Bachelor season 22 finale on March 5th, you know that Bachelor Arie Luyendyk Jr. proposed to Becca K…. and then dumped her on live TV to be with Lauren B.  While the plot twist certainly made for good TV, viewers were outraged at the heartlessness of Arie’s on-screen breakup.

However, being publicly dumped ended up working in Becca’s favor, as she was announced the new Bachelorette on After the Final Rose.  Since then, Arie and Lauren have announced that they plan to get married in January 2019 and are actually expecting a baby in June! As for Becca, the Minnesota native is happily engaged to Garrett Yrigoyen, whom she met on The Bachelorette!

With how wild 2018 has been, 2019 is expected to be just as big for the entertainment industry.

New movies, music from top 40 singers, and even some pregnancy announcements are sure to take the media by storm in 2019, so be sure to look out for what’s to come!

One day after an L.A. judge rejected Paula Patton‘s request to limit ex-husband Robin Thicke‘s joint custody of their 6-year-old son, Julian, the dispute between the former couple is becoming increasingly fraught.

A representative for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Lost Hills station confirms to PEOPLE that law enforcement officials were dispatchers to Patton’s Calabasas home Friday morning after Julian didn’t arrive at school. He had missed his visitation with Thicke the evening before. The representative referred to the incident as “a non-event” but said “it involved a child not wanting to go with someone.”

We lost another celebrity, TV dad Alan Thicke to the vicious year 2016 which has already taken Prince, David Bowie, Mohammed Ali, Alan Rickman, John Glenn,  Natalie Cole, Florence Henderson, Gwenn Ifill, Tommy Ford, Gary Shandling, Glenn Frey and others.

Thicke suffered a heart attack in California while playing ice hockey with his 19  year old son, Carter. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He is survived from by his wife Tanya, his famous entertainer and singer son Robin Thicke and another son Brennan.

A few weeks prior, on Thanksgiving Day, famous TV mom Florence Henderson, who played “Carol Brady” on the 1970s TV sitcom The Brady Bunch also passed away from heart failure.

Thicke and his ex wife Days of Our Lives actress and singer Gloria Loring are credited for penning lots of great sitcom jingles including the ones to Diff’rent Strokes, Facts of Life and Growing Pains.

Thicke went on to appear in numerous television shows and films, often appearing as himself on such series as How I Met Your Mother.

Recently, he appeared on Netflix‘s Fuller House, a reboot of another 1980s sitcom, featuring Bob Saget and Kirk Cameron‘s real-life sister, Candace Cameron Bure. Some of the last tweets on Thicke’s Twitter account referenced the show.

Many of us grew up with Thicke on his 7-year run show and also from the various game shows he hosted.Today, a lot of his past and present co-stars and fellow industry associates shared their condolences and wishes in social media.

A few weeks ago with my great, lovely friend for 35 years, the hilarious Alan Thicke. Will miss you dearly.
