What is notable in all this is that the woman had one of those Birth Announcement Signs on her lawn. It is clear this wasn’t necessarily a pre-meditated crime because the Baby thief attacked Ms. Gurolla with a knife from Gurolla’s own kitchen. It appears that the crime was done by an obviously disturbed individual who may have been motivated on the spur of the moment after seeing that sign. Many times, women are left alone after their spouses return to work. It looks like this criminal just took her chances and got lucky in her quest to steal a baby.
My sister decorated my house and we had lawn signs with our first child announcing to our neighbors that the baby was here, however, we never thought about the possible psychos out there roaming the streets. After our 2nd and 3rd kids, we read all the warnings and were certain to not make that mistake to announce our joy in that way.
In any event, this case is a tragic reminder to us all to skip the lawn announcements and stick with personal announcements and celebrations. This Washington Post story confirms that because of increased security in maternity wards, there are less hospital abductions and these baby thieves are turning to homes.
And this story is another commentary about the victimization of immigrant women. This is not the first case with immigrants. That group is picked on because of the perception they will not report the crime for fear of being deported. Ms. Gurolla’s status is unknown at this moment, but I’d be like her and not care if they deport me so long as I get my baby back!
And perhaps we can go a little further and warn authors of personal blogs to be mindful to not reveal too much about their location and names because you never know who is following your progress and may be ready to pounce on an opportunity.
Scary world we live in!
