We interrupt this regularly scheduled pregnancy, celebrity bump watch and mom blog to bring you a brief tribute to hip hop artist Heavy D who passed away yesterday from pneumonia. Ambulance rushed him from his Beverly Hills home still alive, but he passed after. TMZ reported his death by mid afternoon and Twitter was set ablaze with folks talking about how much they loved his music and how it represented a certain time and era. He was only 44.
Heavy D was a musical icon in that genre and wrote lyrics you could have your kids listen to and you wouldn’t mind rapping to your grandmom. It was feel good music of a different time in rap music that wasn’t overly laced with misogyny, violence and destruction as so much of that genre’s music is today. I was fortunate enough to meet him and see him in person while he performed at a pre-Grammy awards charity event in Los Angeles in 2008. That year, he won the award for best reggae album.
Rest in peace Heavy D. Your presence will be missed!
