My new favorite fashion site is Shopsy. I met its CEO and founder Lisa Morales-Hellebo, a 37 year old mom to two little boys when she first pitched the site idea at a private invite-only New Media Accelerator symposium back in 2010. I was impressed because she was the only female and Latina pitching an application before a roomful of venture capitalists, techies, government officials and other members of the technoratti. The industry is so male-centric and all. I have a poli-tech blog and was writing on poli-tech issues for a political site at the time so that’s how I got an invite. Anyway, back then, she was working on submitting the patent for this innovative way to shop for women.

You see an outfit you like in a magazine. You want it. You’re not sure if it will fit your body type or your budget. So with Shopsy, you can upload the look, and using a proprietary algorithm, filter through various clothes and accessories by budget, color and body type and be given a similar look in a price range you can afford. You will be able to purchase the items right there from the site or check your existing wardrobe to see if you have similar pieces that would fit so you can recreate that fashion mag or celebrity look.
Such a great and inventive idea. It was so great to reconnect and see Morales-Hellebo share an actual beta form of the site at the latest DC Tech Meet up. She told me “she’s come a long way and it’s been a hard road traveled.” She’s been featured in several sites and gotten other recognition. What a difference a year makes. She is truly inspirational. By the way, at the DC tech event, half or three of the start ups sharing site demos were headed by women! Woot!
I will be playing around with Shopsy as I put together outfits for the various holiday parties and mixers I am heading to this season. Everyone should go sign up and take a look around at Shopsy.http://shopsy.com/.
