A recent study revealed that infants of moms who ate more fish while pregnant achieved higher scores in verbal intelligence and fine motor skills testing. These babies also exhibited higher pro-social behavior, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The study, part of the NUTRIMENTHE project “Effect of diet on offspring’s cognitive development”, looked to link genetic variances with fish intake.
The report notes that fish oil is the primary source of Omega-3 fatty acids and contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the main component of brain cell membranes. According to the European Commission, who validated and supports DHA’s beneficial effects, “it contributes to the normal development of the brain and eye of the fetus and breastfed infants”.
Great news for us Fishetarians! Eat up ladies…just so long as its not raw and served as part of sushi or a fish with high levels of mercury in it!
