Recall back in May when we encouraged readers to get their children to think up creative healthy dishes and submit them to First Lady Michelle Obama‘s “Healthy Lunch Challenge” for a chance to have the dish served at and to attend the 2013 Kids’ State Dinner?
They got 1300 recipes but narrowed it down to 2 recipes from each state and ultimately selected 54 winning recipes.
Some of those winning dishes were prepared and served yesterday, July 9 at the 2nd annual Kids’ State Dinner.
Given the odds of getting picked “you should be very proud of yourselves,” the first lady told her guests. “We have seen that when kids like all of you get involved in creating your own healthy meals, the results can really be amazing and delicious and fun. You’ll come up with ideas that none of us grownups ever thought of.”
Some of the winning creations included Audrye Russell from Oregon’s salmon fried rice, and South Dakota’s Owen Kerkvliet’s hidden veggie lasagna.
And look, President Barack Obama even crashed it!
