A pregnant former marathon runner who represented her native Ethiopia in the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece collapsed and died suddenlylast Monday, July 15th after picking up carry-out from a Chinese take-out near her Westport, Connecticut home.
Meskerem Legesse had her 2-year old son with her when she suffered heart failure seconds after the 26-year old sat down in the restaurant in nearby Hamden, Connecticut.
EMT performed CPR on her long enough to keep her alive so her baby at 34 weeks gestation could be delivered later at Yale-New Haven Hospital. There is no word yet on the condition of the baby.
Legesse’s friend, Fatima Sene, told the Associated Press that Legesse had heart problems in the past and was planning to marry the father of her two children.
“It is very sad. She was a very good person,” Sene told the AP. “She would do anything for anybody. And she loved that little boy she left behind.”
