I just came back from an all-day excursion lounging by the public splash park and had a total ball! During the 4-hour stay chilling pool-side with my books and magazines, I also saw a few parenting lapses that caught my attention. The most egregious one was the hydration choices parents offered their kids during this hot day.
It started at the grocery store before heading to the pool. I was standing behind a couple of women, who were a bit on the heavy side, purchasing a bunch of snacks and drinks for their own summer weekend adventure with their children. It appears they were pooling their money and upon realizing that the items in the cart exceeded their budget they were trying to decide what to put back. One woman grabbed the large package of pint sized water and said, “Let’s put this back, they don’t drink water anyway.”
Uuuugh!! I hate to be judgmental but sometimes I can’t help it. I like to blame it on the fact that I am a Virgo, Type A and the eldest so I’m used to bossing people around and holding them up to my extreme high standards. I’m in therapy for it. Sorry.
Anyway, it was evidence that the poor choices in diet and drink perhaps those women have made contributed to their own obesity and they were passing on to their kids.
It’s okay to force kids to drink water even if they don’t want to. They could’ve easily had put back one of the packages of cookies, chips or the sugary drinks.
Water, not only has zero calories, but it is the perfect drink for staying hydrated and for flushing out toxins in the system. It’s a natural diuretic.
Later, when I got to the pool, [call me nosy] but I also saw several birthday parties where the only thing the kids were drinking were sodas, high fructose “Hugs” drinks and juices — all high in calorie and sugar content and totally unnecessary.
There are flavored waters and juice boxes that are mainly water or with reduced calorie and sugar available too.
A simple choice of choosing water would do wonders for starting children off with healthy habits and for learning to choose water first as an option to quench their thirst.
