A Pakistani television talk show is giving away abandoned babies to boost ratings. Last month, Aamir Liaquat Hussain gave 2 abandoned infant girls to childless families and plans to give away a baby boy this week.
“If we didn’t find this baby, a cat or a dog would have eaten it,” Hussain announced during one show before presenting a little baby girl wrapped in pink and red to her new parent and to raucous applause from the audience. .
“Hussain” is one of the most popular talk show, Reuters reports, which usually features cooking segments, celebrity interview and game shows. The show has given away motorbikes, mobile phones and even land to audience members but never a baby!
“We were told that we had passed all the interviews and had been selected to adopt a baby,” Riaz Uddin told Reuters. “We got our baby on live TV.”
The abandoned babies were rescued by the Chhipa Welfare Association, a Pakistani aid organisation that scours garbage dumps and other places for discarded newborns. Meanwhile, Hussain is using his television exposure to appeal to parents thinking of dumping their babies to give them to him instead.
Some in Pakistan have criticized the ploy because they say it exploits lives for ratings and they don’t know if the poor parents whose babies are given away will be helped.
The Chhipa organization said thousands of families wanted the babies and all possible eligible parents were thoroughly vetted.
What do you think? Bad idea or Good considering the babies would be going to families that want them rather than die.
