A holiday shopping survey revealed consumers plan to remain loyal to the retailers they’ve always patronized in the past, and that they plan to shop at discount outlets. Precisely 69% of those responding to ecommerce platform and shopping site PriceGrabber‘s sruvey said they will shop the same retailers as they did last year and of those respondents, 70% said they are doing so out of loyalty. As to where they plan to do their shopping, 75% of the 2,887 people surveyed said online retailers and 68% said a discount store.
Convenience is a big reason customers give for shopping certain retailers as 62% said free shipping moved them while 55% said ease of check out process is a factor. Finally, 40% liked places that were located near their home so they could return items.
“As shoppers are looking for convenience and excellent customer service, retailers are aiming to drive shoppers’ wallet share with strong incentives like free shipping, coupons and aggressive price cuts,” James Brown, vice president of sales of PriceGrabber said. “According to the survey, most consumers plan to research their holiday gift purchases in advance,” added Brown. “Retailers will need to communicate their deals to the online consumer before they start their shopping or they risk losing customers.”
Clothing topped the list of the items most said they would purchase (64%) while gift cards came in second at 47% and 37% said they planned to nab books, DVDs, or games for family and friends. Another 35% said they planned to get toys.
The majority or 54% said they planned to spend $500 or more. But they won’t be uneducated as 88% said they planned to do advanced research before making final purchases.
