Congratulations to Sherri Saum and her husband Kamar de los Reyes who are expecting twins!
Saum plays a lesbian co-parent in the Jennifer Lopez-produced ABC Family original series The Fosters. She and actress Teri Polo‘s characters raise a biological son, two adopted children and a brand-new foster child in the ground-breaking series.
In real life, more and more gay couples are becoming parents, with less barriers than in years’ past.
Generally, gay and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) couples don’t face additional obstacles when it comes to the world of fertility, says Dr. Shahin Ghadir, a reproductive endocrinologist and founding partner of Southern California Reproductive Center.
“They have the desire to be a parent, and that want goes beyond sexuality,” Ghadir added. “Many of the struggles and challenges of conceiving and moving forward with family planning are the same w heterosexual and homosexual couples.”
We can add Saum, Kim Zolciack, Dania Ramirez and a growing list of celebrities who gave birth (or welcomed via surrogate) to twins including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rebecca Romijn, Julia Roberts, Julie Bowen, Lisa Marie Presley, Laura Bush, Jane Seymore, Holly Hunter, Holly Robinson Peete, Angela Bassett.
Gay celebrities Ricky Martin, Elton John, Neil Patrick Harris all have twin children through surrogates.
Saum’s twins are expected to arrive next summer 2014. Saum’s first acting gig was in Aaron Spelling‘s Sunset Beach.
