Comprehensive Web Guide to The Sock Monster

Bellyitch Rewind

After taking an informal poll among my friends, it was agreed that there is a sock monster that goes from home to home consuming half of sock pairs. To combat this horrible beast who I believe also eats tupperwear bowl lids, little girl barrettes and earring halves, one of my pollsters suggested a solution:
Only buy one type, color and brand of the same socks for the children from infants to adults. That way, if that monster goes off with a sock or two, you never have to worry about finding a match because all socks will be pairs.
Voila! Problem solved. Aaaah, the beauty of putting our heads together to fight a common enemy!
Other people have dealt with the monster in the past like Texas Triple . And apparently, he is also a reggae artist at night. He is the subject of a couple of e-books such as Simon & The Sock Monster, and hard copy books like  Gracie meets the Sock Monster and Fulsi, the Sock Monster and The Sock Monster.
He’s got his own webcomic and everything. To help beat the fear, you may try designing your own sock monster or check out the dozens of images in Google of Sock Monsters craft puppets. Or you can buy one already made.
There’s even a store named after him in Seattle. Some other authors have tried to address this creature who is even listed in the Urban Dictionary.
Like unicorns, the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot and other legendary mythical creatures, we can all agree that he exists but is pretty much harmless.

PHOTO History of Ethnic Barbie Dolls Through the Years

This year Sports Illustrated marked the 50th issue of its widely popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition by devoting an entire spread to the iconic Barbie doll. And of course, the decision did not come without controversy and the usual back and forth debate and banter about Barbie, what she means to little girls and  their self esteem, and to beauty ideals.
Instead of jumping on that bandwagon, I thought I’d re share a quite popular spread we did a few years back during the 50th birthday of the doll and used the occasion to pay homage to how ethnic Barbies had developed through the years since Barbie first came on the scene.
Enjoy this trip down blog memory lane:

Barbie, full name Barbara Millicent Rogers, was first introduced on the market on March 9, 1959. Her boyfriend, Ken, debuted in 1961.
She has always been controversial for activist-type moms who fear that the doll represents an unattainable and idiolized form of beauty that they don’t want their daughters striving to achieve.

Many moms “of color” have opposed Barbie because they say she represents a beauty ideal that their daughters can never attain (and look natural trying): blue eyes and blond hair.

However, a few year’s after her introduction, Mattel introduced a doll with darker complexion.

Francie doll introduced in 1967
In 1967, Mattel released a “colored” Francie doll that was made in the same mold as Barbie but just still had European facial features and body shape.
Francie was featured on the Cover of Vogue Italia’s Black Barbie issue in 2009
Only in 2009, did Mattel release a “black Barbie” for commercial (non-collection) sale that had African features.

First Black Barbie doll, introduced in 2009, that had African features

Asian parents wanted in too and wondered when Barbie would come in a version that resembled their little girls.  In 2010, Mattel released its first ever Asian doll, a Ken version, which many Asians complained should’ve been dressed like a modern Asian man in a t-shirt and jeans and not a Kabuki-looking, domo outfit.

A few years ago, when Mattel tried to modernize and release chic and updated dolls, mainly for adult collectors,  I noticed the Barbie Basic  dolls which featured dolls of various ethnic faces, hair styles and texture.

In fact, it was the first time I saw a dark complexioned doll with a mini Afro. I took a photo of it but in the caption, I noted how the black dolls were dressed extra provocatively and one had on a J-Lo style navel cut dress.  Upon research, I discovered that several African American parents were up in arms over the dolls. But honestly, since they were collector items for adults, I really didn’t see much harm in them, unless they are complaining about Black women being portrayed as hypersexual in the media too much, then okay.

Over the years, Mattel has released various ethnic dolls, though for collectors and not commercial sale.

In, 2009, Italian designer Eliana Lorena outfitted over 500 Barbies in multicultural clothing for a charity auction to benefit Save the Children at Sotheby’s in Florence, Italy, to celebrate the then 50th anniversary of Barbie. Among those in the collection:
These dolls had ethnic features.
And then periodically, there are those celebrity replicas such as those our sister site Poshthesocialite featured last year:
Nicki Minaj Barbie
Halle Berry – “Die Another Day” James Bond Barbie
Janet Jackson Barbie
Diana Ross Barbie
 Beyonce
Kimora Lee Simmons
Beyond Ethnic Barbie, other controversial ones cylced in too…

There was that pregnant Midge , Barbie’s cousin, who scared parents into thinking Barbie was going to convince their baby girls they should get knocked up. She didn’t last on the shelves too long.
People went bonkers when a blogger spoke out against the idea of a Bald Barbie for children undergoing chemotherapy while suffering with cancer and Leukemia.
And folks got mad when they thought Mexican Barbie came with her passport to prove she was a citizen.
Despite it all, Barbie has weathered the storm and stays on the scene. She is a ride or die chick. Outlasting it all.
What do you think about Barbie’s legacy and changes through the years?

Report: UK moves closer to making it illegal to drink alcohol while pregnant

Campaigners hoping to make it a crime to drink excessively during pregnancy may be a step closer with a landmark case on the issue due to be heard by the Court of Appeal.
If heard, the legal test case will argue that a six-year-old girl who suffered brain damage due to alcohol exposure in the womb is the victim of a crime because her mother was warned of the risks of her drinking.
Figures from the Department of Health show in total around one in 100 babies are now born with alcohol-related disorders.
In the past three years there has been a 50% rise in Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), with 313 babies found to be damaged from being exposed to alcohol in the womb in 2012/13.
Experts believe the numbers could in fact be much higher, with thousands more foetuses damaged.
Consultant psychiatrist Dr Raja Mukherjee warned mother-to-be do not have to binge-drink to be at risk.

45th Annual NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet Fashion: Kerry Washington & others who wowed (PHOTOS)

Last night, some of our current and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch and other moms hit the red carpet to the  45th NAACP Image Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on February 22, 2014.
Scandal actress and first time mom-to-be Kerry Washington stunned in a custom Thakoon NY dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, a brada clutch and Suzanne Kalan ring.
The  and her cast took home the award for the Outstanding Drama Series award.  She looked stunning pictured with actors Tony Goldwyn, Scott Foley, Columbus Short, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield, Joe Morton, Bellamy Young, and Guillermo Diaz,

Idris Elba, Best Actor nominee for  Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom  and Dad-to-be and with girlfriend Naya Garth, looked dapper in a fitted tux and Louboutin “Dada” flats while posing with 2014 Award season “It” girl actress Lupita  Nyong’o of 12 Years A Slave.  Elba won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for his role in Luther
Nyong’o took home the Best Actress award for her role in that movie award and  looked amazing in a plunging neckline burnt orange Givenchy  pre-Fall 2014 gown with matching sandals and box clutch from the designer with her hair in a parted afro-puff. She acceneted the look with an H. Stern gold cuff and dangling earrings.

A more recent Bellyitch bumpwatch mom Nia Long was nominated for her role in House of Lies and wowed in a jade green  Nicole Miller halter gown Brian Atwood heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo nude basket-weave clutch and Danielle Queller earrings.

Our winner for best body winner actress Regina King, who was nominated for outstanding actress in a drama series, turned heads in Michael Costello, who seems to be the go-to designer for Black Hollywood but seemed to miss in this ill fitting black mermaid dress that looked to constrain the SouthLAnd  star’s toned torso too much.

We have covered mom and soon-to-be surrogate TV personality Sherri Shepherd of The View in the past and last night she worked magic in an off the shoulder shimmery Carmen Marc Valvo gown. The unexpected blue nails were a plus, with the statement accent pieces.
One of the very first moms we featured for being the first to have a reality TV special following her pregnancy, singer and actress Brandy Norwood, won the  Image award for “Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her role on BET’s The Game.  She looked darling and sexy in a black cut out dress during the non-televised dinner show and again the next day during the televised portion of the show in a Jean Fares Couture black lace embellished gown with nude lining.

Even though she didn’t win for her wonderful and talented work in The Butler, advice mom to the world, Ms. Oprah Winfrey looked dazzling in her burnt orange dress while paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela who we lost earlier this year.

Mommy Wars: How the Start-Up mom has it THE HARDEST

“Many mothers find it difficult to raise a family and try to run a business because both the children and the business take a lot of time all by themselves,” an article on the Top 3 Reasons Mothers don’t Start Up in ParentStartup.com states. Another New York Times piece and another  recent article talked about how Venture Capitalist discriminate against mothers.
From that NYT piece:

“[M]uch of the investment world, heavily dominated by men, remains skeptical about a woman’s ability to combine running a fast-growing tech start-up and motherhood, Ms. Gugnani says. She raised $3 million from investors before becoming pregnant.

“All of the women I know who went to raise money did it when they didn’t have kids,” she says. “There is total discrimination in the start-up world against women who are pregnant.”

Making pregnancy and motherhood a focal point of the investment process is an outdated way of thinking, she adds.

Female entrepreneurs are less numerous and raise less money than their male counterparts. Women make up 10 percent of the founders at high-growth tech companies, “and they raise 70 percent less money than men do because of their lack of access to capital,” says Lesa Mitchell of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where she is vice president for initiatives on advancing innovation.”

And so, the “Start-up mom” joins the Mommy Wars.

Background:

The mommy wars is an ongoing battle between mothers disputing and discussing which child rearing method is best: Sleep in Room v Nursery; Bottle-feeding v. Breastfeeding; Baby wearing v. Carrier; Sling v. Bjorn; Cry It Out v. Not; Heavily Scheduled baby v. Let baby control sleep and eating.

Moms are opinionated and each one believes her method or solution is tops. Of course, to each its own but that doesn’t stop those who have hard-fast thoughts on one thing from speaking up and trying to convince others this. They will not be silenced. They may bully others into their perspective.

Another mommy battle is the battle between Stay-at-Home (SAHM) versus Work-at-home (WAHM) versus Working Moms. Working moms often feel SAHM guilt trip them over spending less time with their children. Meanwhile, SAHMs say they feel belittled by Working Moms who assume they do nothing all day but eat bonbons while their kids are at school. Working Moms say SAHMs are privileged enough to not have to work yet judge those harshly who do. Work-at-home moms say they have the best and worst of each scenario.

Now that the Start Up mom has been brought into the picture, as a work-at home Start up mom, I proffer that the Start-up or Entrepreneurial mom has it THE HARDEST.
Why?
While start up moms do have the luxury of being able to chaperon school field trips, attend school meetings and take our kids to the library as I do daily, they also have the challenge of having to clean the home, provide meals, and be a homemaker all while not bringing income but expected to.
Unlike the SAHM who is not expected to bring in external income, the Start-up mom has to contribute to the family expenses.
Unlike the Working Mom or Work-at-home who is working for a company and at least bringing in guaranteed income, the Start-up mom works for no one and has to go out and generate income from independent sources.
The Start-Up Mom has to bring home the bacon by working 50 hour weeks trying to build a company that makes little to no money that may never be successful enough to generate income or funding.
And she has a tough haul raising money to fund her venture, considering that recent Business Insider story revealing how the VC industry discriminates against mothers.
It’s a hard uphill battle to bear along with the other family responsibility on our backs.
Yeah, we have it the hardest!

Sweden’s Princess Madeleine gives birth to daughter in New York City

I
Congratulations to Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her husband businessman Christopher O’Neill on the birth of their daughter this Thursday, February 20 in New York City.
Although the latest Swedish royal made her debut in America, born at New York’s  Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center,  her arrival still warranted a 21-gun salute home in Europe, The Mirror reported.
This is the first child for the couple who married last year and live in New York where Madeleine works for the nonprofit World Childhood Foundation, founded by her mother, Queen Silvia.

Congrats.

We love her because she is the first royal that we know of who has an active Facebook account and presence.
Very revolutionary and modern!
