10 Jennie Mai Summer Trends Styling Tips for busy moms

If you could have a style concierge or stylist, you’d effortlessly fab all the time just like celebrities. One lucky winner in a contest hosted by Colgate Optic White won a styling session with celebrity stylist Jeannie Mai last Friday, July25th.  Mai, who will co-host The Real with Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums Tamara Mowry-Housley  and Tamar Braxton- Herbert this fall, dressed the winner (above) in Walmart apparel, accessories and shoes in addition to sharing tips and tricks on how to rock the latest and greatest summer fashion trends without breaking the bank.
We’re in luck because Mai offers the following additional 10 styling tips to Bellyitch readers who also may want to make a statement without spending too much:
1. One of the most stylish and sensible ways you can partake in summer trends without jumping into temporary trends is to shop vintage. Today trends are taking strong struts from the past, and celebrities like Beyonce and Carrie Underwood are jumping right in. A good tip to help you  shop vintage and stand out is to aim for statement accessories that add the throwback to your modern wear. Tortoise shell sunnies, natural fiber woven clutches and bags, or low block heel footwear are essentials. One of my ultimate fave places around the world to shop at is in my very own home of Los Angeles. Decades on Melrose is a legendary must to all the fashion mavens everywhere. It’s worth the trip back in timeless style.
Decades on Melrose
2. As a fashionista, it’s important to stay on top of the latest trends. This year’s Pantone color of the year is Radiant Orchid – so swipe some lavender polish onto your lovely nail beds the next time you go to the salon. Manis and pedis are fun and easy ways to add pops of color to your look.
3. I am a fan of a bright, bold lip. But if you are drawing attention to your lips you need to make sure your pearly whites are sparkling white. I recommend stashing lip colors with blue undertones and the new Colgate Optic White Toothbrush + Whitening Pen in your purse for an on-the-go beauty update.
4. Neon orange lips are officially in. The bright orange shade provides the necessary pop to your lips and looks great on multiple skin tones.
5. While we all love to rock bright and bold colors, remember that black is and always will be classic. Make sure to keep a little black dress stashed in your closet to rock at the next event you attend or night out on the town.
6. Tie your look together with some great accessories. Adding a statement necklace can really set the tone for the rest of your outfit. You can really transition an outfit from day to night with the help of a stylish accessory.

7. Ladies, it’s all about the blue eye makeup these days! Apply shades of teal and seafoam to your eyelid or as a liner to make those gorgeous eyes of yours sparkle and shine.
8. Looking to jump on a fashion trend from the 90’s? Well ladies, you are in luck – overalls are back in full force! This laid back outfit looks comes as a romper or in the traditional full length get up
– so why not have a blast from the past and rock the overall!

9.  Accessories are a girl’s best friend, am I right? We all love to dress up our look with bangles, earrings and the hottest new handbag. But ladies, don’t forget your best accessory is and always will be your smile! Make your smile pop by using the full Optic White line of products – brush, rinse, whiten and go for whiter teeth in just one day!
10. No one wants to feel weighed down, especially when it comes to their makeup. Instead of wearing a heavy foundation, try a tinted moisturizer – it provides the coverage you want/need in a light weight formula.
Excellent tips! Happy Summer Styling, ladies!

20 Last Minute Things to do before Baby Arrives

Are you in your last month of pregnancy and flustered about what you need to do and worry if you have the time? No fret, cousin JJ is here to give you a checklist of crap you need to haul ass and get done.
A list should ease the stress:
What to Pack in the Baby Bag:
1. A warm and comfortable blanket but one you don’t mind getting ruined with all the juices, balms and secretions that accompany labor. It won’t be the same after. errrr.
2.  Mint or lollipops – You may be restricted from eating. The sugar in the lollipop can help curb hunger pangs and keep you from stink breath. Stink breath is no bueno.
3. Lip balm – You may get dehydrated. Keep your lips moisturized. I like ESOS!
4. Moisturizer – Get a very thick tube of moisturizer. I recommend Aquaphor because you don’t need a lot to do the trick.
5. Smart phone camera or digital camera – No explanation necessary
6. A couple pair of granny undies – But no more because you will get the mesh disposable undies plenty at the hospital. You can even take home extras the nurses bring in your room. They’re the best!
7. Baby going home outfit – This is the outfit you dress baby in when the hospital photography company comes by.
8. Gifts for the nurses – Some go above and beyond to make your short stay pleasant. Purchase a box of candy, or a mini spa kit or a journal or cards. I love Steep Seep’s Grapefruit Bergamot gift set which costs under $20!
9. Music – have a playlist of soothing music on a CD or on your phone’s portable speaker that you can plug in and help you calm down and get through a long labor.
10. Breast pad – You may leak so breast-pads and some Lansinoh Nipple Cream may come in handy for cracked or sore nipples from nursing.
LAST MINUTE NESTING
11. Get the carpets cleaned and get rid of any cat or dog hair and other allergens.
12. Create a music playlist for labor and delivery.
13. Buy all the creams, lotions, medicines, and miscellaneous  items you need for yourself and baby.
14. Buy clear plastic containers to organize baby clothing, accessories, toys and a label maker
15. Organize baby’s clothes and label the bins: newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6months, 6 to 12 months.
16. Create a “call list” on your smart phone so your hubby, spouse or partner knows who to contact after you give birth.

LAST MINUTE GROOMING
You have to make sure you are presentable for labor and delivery, photos after baby arrives and just for feeling good about yourself and the end of the 40 week journey. Don’t know who said letting yourself go was okay during pregnancy, but they lied. If you feel fresh, clean, primmed and prepped, you will feel energetic and ready for pushing out that baby.
17. Get your nether regions waxed. You really don’t want doctors and nurses seeing your business looking like the Brazilian rain forest. Opt for a Brazilian wax instead. If it’s out of the budget, consider going with Nair Bikini removal gel which will not require you to use a razor and nick yourself, but be careful.
18. Wax your eyebrows. You’ll feel better and look great in the post birth pics. But if you’re going for the Anastasia the Russian Gladiator look, then no.
19. Get a Mani and Pedi – A mani because your hands will be in pics and you don’t want to cut baby with your hang nail. Not good.  A pedi because your toes may be in the air and/or in stirrups during the pushing stage and you don’t want to be embarrassed by crusty and ashy hammer toes in people’s faces.
20. Get a hair appointment and get your hair in braids and/or cornrows. You need a low maintenance style bc you will not have time to do your hair after baby arrives and braided styles look great in pics.

10 Summertime Hacks you need to know about NOW

Summer is around the corner. Along with fun and sun, the season also brings bugs and unbearable heat! But you can beat the stresses of summer with these 10 hacks developed by our partners at Summer Nanny Jobs
  • 1. Keep a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep bugs away.  You can spend tons of money buying bug spray, and you’ll most likely end up feeling sticky, smelling like bug spray, and getting bitten by bugs anyway. An easy solution is to carry a dryer sheet with you, which is something most people have at home already anyway. By carrying it in your pocket you can ward off bugs; something about the smell keeps the bugs away from you.
  • 2. Sprinkle baking soda in sweaty shoes.  Running around in your shoes without socks is a regular occurrence during the summer time because everyone just wants to slip shoes on and go. Unfortunately, this also causes extra unwanted odor in your shoes.  To fix this problem sprinkle the inside of the shoes with baking soda to absorb the odors.  If you’d rather not have the powdery look in your shoes, you can create a sachet by using a rubber band wrapped around a few tablespoons of baking soda in a handkerchief.   Just put a sachet in each shoe and the odors will disappear.
  • 3. Trap fruit flies with apple cider vinegar.  Did you bring home fruit flies from the farmers market?  Fill a glass jar half full of cider vinegar and screw the lid back on.  Punch several holes in the lid and leave the jar where you have seen the fruit flies.  They will be gone in no time.
  • 4. Cool a sunburn with white vinegar.  Unfortunately, with the warm summer months comes the occasional sunburn.  To take the sting out of a sunburn soak clean soft cloths in white vinegar, wring them out and lay them on the sunburned skin.
  • 5. Coat feet with petroleum jelly and cover with socks at bedtime.  This trick will keep your feet soft and sandal ready all summer.  A little petroleum jelly on your elbows and knees will make sure they stay soft and smooth for all of those revealing summer outfits.
  • 6. Mix a can of cola with ketchup for a quick and easy barbeque sauce.  Figure out about how much sauce you want and add the cola to the ketchup to thin it out and add flavor and sweetness.  Brush on chicken or ribs during the last stages of cooking on the grill to avoid burning.
  • 7. Use conditioner to shave your legs in a pinch.  Did you forget to pack your shaving cream for your vacation?  That’s okay; you can use the sample bottle of conditioner that most hotels give you.  This will leave your legs smooth and silky soft.
  • 8. Apply coconut oil to bee stings and bug bites.  Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties and will help heal the sting or bite as well as soothe the pain.
  • 9. Straws make great strawberry hullers.  Take a normal straw and push it up through the base of the strawberry and come up under the hull.  Keep pushing and the hull will usually come right out.  Practice makes perfect with this, but it really works well when you get the hang of it and you won’t have all those strawberry seeds under your finger nails.
  • 10. Use cute cupcake papers to cover your drinks this summer.  When the weather turns nice eating and drinking outside becomes standard, and almost mandatory.  The problem with eating and drinking outside is keeping the bugs away from your food and drinks.  Get yourself some cupcake papers and use them to cover your drinks.  If you’re having a party the cupcake papers can even match the theme.  To make a drink cover you just need to punch a hole in the cupcake paper and stick a straw through.  Just make sure there are no bugs inside the straw before you drink.

Stay cool!

Celeb moms at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival (PHOTOS)

The 67th annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France is coming to a close and this week, we spotted some of our favorite celebrity moms on the red carpet to various events looking very glam and super gorgeous in some elegant and ornate designer gowns and dresses.
Here is a rundown of our favorites:

Cate Blanchett‘ was elegance personified in this gorgeous Valentino gown  that she wore at the Chopard Trophy ceremony. Cause meets Celebrity as she wore shrimp earrings and a snail bracelet from the Chopard Animal World Collection.

Wow! Wow! Actress Julianne Moore went bold attending the Calvin Klein Party wearing a burgundy Calvin Klein coset made of varnished leather and paired with a spiral skirt in black embroidered satin, accessorized with Chpard jewels, a Louis Vuitton black “Epi Electci Petite Malle” clutch, and a black LV patent leather belt. I love it!!!

Moore also wowed attendees in an off the shoulder mauve and grey Calvin Klein tea-length dress with fishtail bottom, again with Chopard jewels and a Calvin Klein clutch while attending the premier of Mr. Turner. This look is not as wow-worthy but works.

She’s got legs and she knows how to use them. And for Ethiopian supermodel Liya Kebede, this black and blue Roberto Cavalli mini dress paired with sexy strappy Jimmy Choo sandals proves the point!

She’s not a mom yet, but I could not help but drop in a mention of People magazine’s 2014 “Most Beautiful” Lupita Nyong’o because she totally redeemed herself from that Met Ball miss in this  sleek navy mid-length Calvin Klein dress with a tiny slash at the top of her ribcage that she wore to the Calvin Klein party.

Nicole Kidman stunned in an intricate Armani Prive gown to the Festival’s Opening Ceremony and premiere of Grace of Monaco. It worked even more to see her in a healthier, less gaunt size as we’ve been used to lately. The dress is AMAZE.

Salma Hayek was pretty in hot pink at the premiere of The Prophet wearing a very pretty and feminine strapless Sain Laurent dress with eye catching Boucheron asp and a edgy studded Saint Laurent clutch.

Not so glam but executive CEO attire worthy  Bottega Venetta  dress with metallic and lace embellishments that she wore a couple days later at the screening of Hommage Au Cinema D’Animation.

45th Annual NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet Fashion: Kerry Washington & others who wowed (PHOTOS)

Last night, some of our current and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch and other moms hit the red carpet to the  45th NAACP Image Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on February 22, 2014.
Scandal actress and first time mom-to-be Kerry Washington stunned in a custom Thakoon NY dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, a brada clutch and Suzanne Kalan ring.
The  and her cast took home the award for the Outstanding Drama Series award.  She looked stunning pictured with actors Tony Goldwyn, Scott Foley, Columbus Short, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield, Joe Morton, Bellamy Young, and Guillermo Diaz,

Idris Elba, Best Actor nominee for  Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom  and Dad-to-be and with girlfriend Naya Garth, looked dapper in a fitted tux and Louboutin “Dada” flats while posing with 2014 Award season “It” girl actress Lupita  Nyong’o of 12 Years A Slave.  Elba won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for his role in Luther
Nyong’o took home the Best Actress award for her role in that movie award and  looked amazing in a plunging neckline burnt orange Givenchy  pre-Fall 2014 gown with matching sandals and box clutch from the designer with her hair in a parted afro-puff. She acceneted the look with an H. Stern gold cuff and dangling earrings.

A more recent Bellyitch bumpwatch mom Nia Long was nominated for her role in House of Lies and wowed in a jade green  Nicole Miller halter gown Brian Atwood heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo nude basket-weave clutch and Danielle Queller earrings.

Our winner for best body winner actress Regina King, who was nominated for outstanding actress in a drama series, turned heads in Michael Costello, who seems to be the go-to designer for Black Hollywood but seemed to miss in this ill fitting black mermaid dress that looked to constrain the SouthLAnd  star’s toned torso too much.

We have covered mom and soon-to-be surrogate TV personality Sherri Shepherd of The View in the past and last night she worked magic in an off the shoulder shimmery Carmen Marc Valvo gown. The unexpected blue nails were a plus, with the statement accent pieces.
One of the very first moms we featured for being the first to have a reality TV special following her pregnancy, singer and actress Brandy Norwood, won the  Image award for “Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her role on BET’s The Game.  She looked darling and sexy in a black cut out dress during the non-televised dinner show and again the next day during the televised portion of the show in a Jean Fares Couture black lace embellished gown with nude lining.

Even though she didn’t win for her wonderful and talented work in The Butler, advice mom to the world, Ms. Oprah Winfrey looked dazzling in her burnt orange dress while paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela who we lost earlier this year.

Ciara’s TLC “CrazySexyCool” Tribute- Baby Bump Style

R&B Pop songstress and mom-to-be Ciara recently took to her Instagram account to share a “Crazy. Sexy. Cool” photo tribute to fellow Atlanta natives TLC. The top-selling girl group’s chart topping hit sophomore album featured members T-Boz, the late Left Eye and Chill above their alter ego personalities. [Edited to add: Another site Madame Noire contends this was a tribute to Digable Planet’s “Cool Like That” song because CiCi captions the photos lyrics from the chorus form that song “I’m cool like that. I ‘m Peace Like That, I Love Like That, I’m Out.” Err. That works too! ha!]

She nailed it!

The “Body Party” singer and her fiance hip hop star Future are expecting their first child later this year.

She announced the pregnancy officially this January on the ABC daytime panel talk show The View after much being shrouded in internet buzz and speculation that she was preggers.

It is her first child. He has children from previous relationships.

35 Natural Newborn Care Remedies

It’s a little early for EcoFriday, but we still wanted to share a revamped version of a past post of some of our favorite newborn care tips for new moms who are wary of using chemicals on their babies. Enjoy!
1.Avoid using most baby products. WebMD advises parents to keep their newborns away from harsh powders and shampoos to protect their delicate skin and immune systems.
2.There is a right and a wrong time for infant massage. Gagazine’s article on infant massage explains how the time just after a bath or diaper change is perfect for a little touch therapy. Try to avoid touch therapy when the baby appears hungry or cranky.
3.Be gentle when cleaning nipples. When breastfeeding an infant, Medline Plus recommends that mothers prevent drying and cracking nipples by avoiding soaps and drying with harsh cloths or motions. Uncomfortable nipples negatively affect both mother and child.
4.Cleanse baby acne with water. As a residual of connecting with his or her mother’s hormones, some newborns break out into small acne patches. Avoid using oils or lotions that can irritate it further, but very mild, all-natural soaps may work in more severe cases.
5.Wash cloth diapers with baking soda and rinse them with vinegar. Avoid using harsh detergents when cleaning cloth diapers, even those without artificial dyes or fragrances. A wash in baking soda and a rinse in vinegar should suffice.

6.Train newborns for EC by laying them on diapers or pads. Elimination communication is a rather controversial practice that will not work for everyone, but this article seeks to cover a variety of viewpoints to allow parents to decide what they feel is best for their children. This tip from DiaperFreeBaby.org suggests one way to transition a newborn to the EC routine.
7.Wash newborn eyes with water. Normal tear duct issues need to be discussed with a pediatrician, but parents needing to clean their newborn’s eyes can do so by simply wetting a soft cotton ball and gently scrubbing the gunk away.
8.Use glycerin laxatives. Newborns and babies who struggle with constipation issues can have their systems unlocked with glycerin laxatives, either as a solid or a liquid. Those made with artificial chemicals may prove too harsh for their bodies to handle.
9.Use steam to unblock nasal passages. While professional medical care may be needed in instances of severe illness, parents can alleviate some cold symptoms at home. Congestion, for example, can be cleared up using the steam from a hot shower.
10.Make newborns sleep on their backs. One preventative measure against sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) involves having newborns sleep on their backs rather than their stomachs. They may feel less comfortable, but it helps bolster their chances of surviving the night.
11.Wash clothes thoroughly. Another WebMD tip, this time touting the importance of washing baby clothes in dye- and fragrance-free detergent before dressing infants.
12.Infant massage requires a calm setting. As with adult massages, Gagazine believes that the infant version of the ritual is best executed in a calm, warm atmosphere. Place the baby on a soft blanket or towel in a draftless room away from a television or cell phone, perhaps encouraging relaxation with soft music or speech.
13.Protect nipples with milk or lanolin. To prevent painful cracking, Medline Plus recommends leaving a little bit of milk on the nipple after feeding to keep the area moist. Alternately, cracking can also be avoided by applying 100% lanolin to the nipple. Never use any artificial chemicals near the area where an infant feeds.
14.Read the signs of needing to expel waste when practicing EC. When not exacted correctly, EC can lead to disgusting, unsanitary messes – and a newborns’ inability to verbally communicate only makes things more complicated. Fortunately, parents wanting to stick with the diaper-free movement can learn how to read their child’s body language and know how to properly react to the incoming flow.
15.Use natural cleaning products around the home. For added protection against contact with harsh chemicals that can make a newborn ill, take advantage of the disinfectant properties of natural substances such as vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda.
16.Prevent chapped skin with natural products. A multitude of newborn- and infant-friendly products exists to keep babies from suffering dry, irritated skin without the use of artificial chemicals.
17.Weigh the pros and cons of circumcision. Outside of a religious context, the decision to circumcise or not stands as a heavy issue with natural parents. Be sure to understand all of the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure before making the choice.
18.Clean the umbilical cord with water and a Q-Tip. Be sure to use a Q-Tip wetted with clean – even sterile – water to keep the umbilical cord free of bacteria. Alcohol, honey, and goldenseal powder work as well.

RightStart.com - $5 Off $50+ Orders - RSTART2
19.Make homemade nasal drops. Combine saline and water together for nose drops suitable for safe cleaning of a newborn’s clogged nasal passages.
20.Extra water works as a laxative. As an alternative to glycerin laxatives, consider feeding a newborn a little extra water to unbind the constipation.
21.Bathe conservatively. WebMD recommends that newborns receive a gentle sponge bath 2 to 3 times a week, as washing them too much compromises the health of their skin. Use either no soap or extremely mild, natural soap to prevent any dermal irritations.
22.When massaging, always keep at least one hand on the newborn. According to Gagazine, parents should leave at least one hand on their child at all times in order to maximize the effectiveness of touch therapy.
23.Avoid “baby bottle tooth decay.” Breast milk makes for one of the healthiest, most natural ways to keep a newborn healthy and strong, but blending it with foods and drinks pumped full of refined sugar actually expatiates the process of tooth decay.
24.Know how to properly store soiled cloth diapers. Become familiar with the wet pail and dry pail methods of containing the odor and bacteria associated with cloth diapers. Wet pails must be contentiously kept covered in order to prevent drowning.
25.Keep the crib nearby – even at night. The American SIDS Institute recommends parents allow their newborn’s crib to remain in their room for the first 6 months of life, as dong so greatly reduces the risk of suffering the condition.
26.A little sunlight can clear up jaundice. A little extra bilirubin is normal in newborn infants, and a bit of time in the sunlight – no more than 10 minutes, with 5 minutes each in the front and the back – can clear up any jaundice that may crop up. Of course, a physician should be consulted if it doesn’t clear.
27. Stick with soft clothing. According to WebMD, dressing children in clothes cut from coarser materials heightens the risk of eczema, rashes, and other uncomfortable skin conditions. Organic cotton, bamboo, ore hemp are all extremely appropriate choices.

(Valid until 3/31/14)
28.Avoid using lubricant on the head. Due to the sensitivity of infants’ skin, it may be a good idea to only use natural lubricants with a pediatrician’s permission. If they give the go-ahead, do not use any oils or lotions on the baby’s head.
29.Use BPA-free bottles. Some mothers do not produce sufficient milk for their newborns, no matter how hard they try. In these instances, they will want to use BPA-free bottles to keep their babies properly fed without worrying about problematic chemicals leeching into the formula.
30.Avoid baby wipes. –When cleaning the baby after an accident and subsequent diaper changes, WebMD advises parents to use with a dry, soft cloth rather than commercial wipes that may contain harsh chemicals.
31.Know how to trim nails. When clipping a newborn’s nails, be sure to use special trimmers or scissors to prevent any unfortunate injuries. Cut along the natural lines when it comes to fingernails, but go straight across when doing the toes. On both, make a contentious effort to push down the pads of skin away from the nail to further reduce the risk of an accidental cutting.
32.Never clean the inside of a newborn’s ear canal. Parents may clear wax away on the outside of a newborn’s ear using extremely gentle swabs with a Q-Tip. Sticking it inside the baby’s ear canal, however, runs the risk of causing permanent hearing loss. Pediatricians will be able to give more information on removing internal excess wax without exacting any damages.
33.Make homemade baby shampoo. For instances when water may just not be enough, parents may want to whip up a batch of this all-natural baby shampoo to scrub out the germs without causing skin issues.
34.Use natural insect repellent. Many companies sell products that repel mosquitoes and other pests without the use of harsh chemical blends that will irritate a newborn’s skin. Seek these out – they usually contain eucalyptus and lemon and often come formulated especially for people under 12 months.
35.Pat dry – don’t rub. When changing diapers, WebMD thinks that parents need to spritz their newborns with clean water and pat dry rather than rub to keep skin from becoming too irritated.
