5 ways to teach sportsmanship to children

There is a little 8-year old boy on my son’s soccer team who throws a tantrum each time the team loses or he doesn’t get a chance to play as long as he wants. Another boy in that same son’s basketball team would throw a fit and cry if he got taken out of the game.
Teaching a child to be a good sport can be challenging especially for younger children. Take a look at these tips Supernanny.com asked us to share to give you ideas on how to handle it:

  1. Teach him that there is no I in TEAM. This saying is still popular among coaches because it’s so true. Kids, by nature, are self-focused. It’s natural, especially at a young age, for them to think about themselves more than their teammates. They want to be the one to kick the ball in for a goal or hit the home run and win the game. Teach your child that no matter how great he is, he’s part of a team, and everyone on that team is a valuable player. Talk about how each person has something to contribute and should be given the chance to play. These ideas can be especially hard to get across to your child if he’s skilled and is considered a star of the team. When others set him apart because of his talent, it’s easy for him to fall into the trap of feeling like he can get things done all by himself. But he can’t. Even the star needs the support and help of his teammates to shine.
  2. Let him know mistakes are a part of everything in life. No one is perfect, and mistakes are just part of the game in sports. That’s easy to say, but often kids don’t take mistakes with a great attitude. A missed ball or an out of bounds throw can cause anything from a few minutes of pouting to a full-blown meltdown. Take those opportunities to talk with your child about his feelings about the mistake. Remind him that no one on the team, not even the star player, gets it right every time. Help him remember a time when other team members made mistakes and it turned out OK. Helping him realize that his mistake isn’t fatal will help put things in perspective. Off the field or court, give your child lots of opportunities to try new things. Learning how to bounce back from mistakes in everyday life will help him do the same in the game.
  3. Show her how to win. One of the hardest things to teach your child is the lesson of humility. It’s her natural instinct to enthusiastically celebrate her team’s wins, and there’s nothing wrong with that. She and her teammates worked hard and they deserve to celebrate! They should be proud of themselves and enjoy the payoff of all their hard work and dedication. The key is to show kindness and respect to the other team while enjoying the win. That balance is hard to achieve, even for some adults. Remind your child what’s it’s like to be on the losing team. How would she like the winning team to treat her in those situations? What could they do or say that would make the loss easier to handle? By helping her see things from the losing team’s perspective, she’ll be much better prepared to show humility when she wins.
  4. Show him how to lose. The old adage “there’s nothing worse than a sore loser” still rings true today. Teaching your child to show humility when he wins is hard. Teaching him to show grace when he loses is even harder. His natural reaction is more likely to be anger and resentment towards the other team. Use these opportunities to talk about the importance of being proud of his efforts, even when they don’t result in a win. Books and films are filled with examples of good sportsmanship and can be discussion starters for you.
  5. Give her practice in being part of a team outside of sports. There are lots of opportunities in your child’s everyday life for her to learn and practice good team skills. Anytime she has to work with another person to accomplish a task will help her build up the skill set she needs to be a great team player. This can happen in free play with neighborhood kids when they come together to build a backyard fort or develop a new game. It can happen when she’s working with her siblings to get the Saturday chores done. Allow your child to learn from those situations and she’ll reap the rewards both on and off the field.
Good luck parents and caregivers!

‘I am Eleven’ movie features stories from children worldwide turning 11-years old

Last week on September 12, the documentary, “I am Eleven” which features several children around the world turning 11 opened in theaters worldwide.  From the creators:

Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey  traveled the world for six years talking with 11-year-olds to compose this insightful, funny and moving portrait of childhood. From an orphanage in India to a single-parent household in inner-city Melbourne, to bathing with elephants in Thailand, this documentary explores the lives and thoughts of children from all around the world. It weaves together deeply personal and at times hilarious portraits of what it means to stand on the cusp between childhood and adolescence, that fleeting moment when childish naiveté has faded, yet teenaged self-consciousness has not yet taken hold. These young minds, still unguarded and remarkably honest, offer a powerful insight into the future of our world.

The documentary had an 8-month theatrical run in Australia, winning several cinema awards, before hitting the US market this month.

Fun at the #LadiesWithGame Tailgate Bloggers Event

Every once in a while, we get to go to a fab blogger event and when we do we enjoy bringing back some of the fun and sharing the pics with our friends and readers.

Tonight was such a night as I headed to  DC’s fabulous, artsy Long View Gallery in the heart of the city to attend our blog partner PopSugar‘s beauty blogger event sponsored by Smirnoff and featuring its newest line of drinks and cocktails.

When I got there, the dimly-lit venue with its unique exposed brick walls was set to life with red up-lighting and buzzing with pretty beauty and lifestyle bloggers, photographers and other socialites milling about sipping on signature cocktails or holding bottles of Smirnoff Ice, and noshing at one of four stations:

1) A chili station featured scrumptious petite round cut jalapeno cornbread dipped in chili;

gooey cheesy mac & cheese topped with barbecue chicken shavings; and tasty corn chowder;

2) Another station served up a buffet of pulled pork, beef and turkey barbecue and a tater tot nacho bar.

3) A sliders station included mini-burgers and mini crab cakes.

4) The dessert table featured assorted mini whoopie pies, assort d mini lollipops, sugar cookies, Smirnoff Ice peach bellinis and Smirnoff Ice Watermelon Mimosas.

The host, actress Keshia Knight Pulliam who is dating Big Tigger, an alum to my alma mater University of Maryland, welcomed guests and shouted out HBCUs. The Cosby Show  alum, who graduated from Spellman College, told the crowd of about 100 that she would be attending the historical classic football game tomorrow and invited all to continue to enjoy the event.

We got to burn off the food dancing to tunes being spun by a female DJ.
Play a game of sandbag toss.
Or get in on the very competitive round of Jenga.
To commemorate the event, there was a photo booth where bloggers took souvenir pics.
The eyelash application and manicure stations were fabulous additions.
Overall, it was a very fab time!

Kate Middleton’s Maternity Style Picks: Take II

With confirmation that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting the second royal baby with her husband Prince William, we say let the bump watch begin and the maternity style watch as well. Last round, we complained that Kate Middleton‘s style, while pristine, crisp, cultured and well-put together worked well, it was a bit on the boring side. We longed for more playful experimentation with whimsical scarves and cluthes or toppers and such. Alas, being a princess means you have to be on the conservative and safe side. So, we’ve given up.

Here are our top picks for Kate’s wardrobe this round:

For a daytime visit, we recommend the Vince Short Sleeve Drop Shoulder Maternity Dress by A Pea in the Pod.

For a formal state or business event, we recommend the Isabella Oliver Ellon Maternity Dress.

On a night out during a formal evening affair, Kate would turn heads in this Lace Amelia maternity dress from Tiffany Rose in Windsor Blue!

Tongues would certainly be flapping if Kate stepped out in pants, wearing one of her fave designers from her first pregnancy, Love by Top Shop, during a casual tour of a facility or at the opening of a hospital ward.

Baby Monitors 101

It really feels great to the couple when they become parents of their new born baby. It is certainly one of the most magical moments of their life which truly could not be expressed in words. Every baby born brings lots of happiness to the family. The schedule of the family gets changed immediately. Keeping all the things aside, the top priorities are given to the infant for his perfect caring.
large part of an individual’s time goes in looking after the needs and essentials of the baby. Of course every baby needs utmost care during his initial days in this world. Every thing is made and modified as per little one’s convenience and comfort. Obviously every one wants to provide a perfect console to the baby throughout the day and night. Precisely an individual never compromises regarding the care and safety of his baby.
Well, no doubt an infant brings happiness in the home but at the same time, he also brings too much of responsibilities. There are lots of things which you need to do for your tot and if you are a first time parent, then you might feel for assistance. There are times when you can’t remain near to your baby all the time, as there are many other pending works including cooking, managing your home, your office tasks and many such other works which also you need to do isn’t it? And you can’t leave your baby alone too.
Such situations put you between the horns of dilemma.  Almost all the parents sometimes experience this scene. Hence to avoid this issue of parents for their tots, manufacturers have provided a very effective solution through which you could watch out your baby at the times when you are at some other part of your home due to some work. It is the baby monitor, which is very innovative and at the same time highly useful.
What is a Baby Monitor? This is a device which has been specifically designed to look after your baby when you are out from the sight regarding some work in your home. The device keeps on sending the reports of every single moment instantly which lets you know about the current position of your baby. Hence you could be there at the time when your baby needs you.
The Advantages-One of the best parts of this device is that a baby monitor is portable. It means that you could carry it along wherever you move in your home. You could conveniently carry out your other tasks being away from your baby keeping the long ranged monitor in front of you. The other compelling feature of this device is the uninterrupted communication which never gets affected by any interference.
The Convenience- Baby Monitors have been developed a lot than their earlier versions. In general, you could easily get some great qualities of baby monitor in Melbourne as they are available in abundance. They are now configured with state of the art sensors which alerts you instantly as soon as your baby makes a move. However, make sure that you choose the monitor equipped with the best motion sensors.
A Valued Aspect- At the times when you couldn’t do the work of your home properly, due to half of your attention over your little child, baby monitors at the same time keeps you out from such worries and hence you could carry out your work without being panicking about your baby.
To summarize, you could keep a perfect balance between the care of your baby and performing house hold tasks now. The invention of baby monitors has really provided an ultimate convenience to the schedules of first time parents.

Back to School: 5 Superfoods breakfast to fuel your day

As the school year starts, getting a healthy nutritious breakfast to keep one going becomes more and more important for kids and parents.
Nutritionist offers these tips of 5 nutrient-rich breakfast items that can fuel your day.
  1. Soothing Sips
Green tea usually gets all the attention, but black tea is packed with theaflavins, antioxidants that a study from Rutgers University in New Jersey suggests may speed up recovery from muscle soreness after exercise. Drinking a cup of any brand of black team may also reduce risk of heart attack – plus it’s a great way to warm up on a chilly fall morning.
  2. Go with Grains:
If you’re looking for a heartier breakfast choice, go with the powerful superfood combo of Oats and Greek yogurt. The oats are a source of soluble fiber which helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, in addition to lowering cholesterol. Greek Yogurt has double the amount of protein as regular yogurt, in addition to probiotics that aid digestion and boost the immune system. However, regular yogurt has roughly 10% more calcium than Greek yogurt, so if calcium is your focus, you might want to stick with regular yogurt.

To add some color and antioxidants to your bowl, add some blueberries. In addition to antioxidants, this popular superfood contains potassium and Vitamin C. It also has a high water content, which makes them a great source of hydration for your skin and entire body.
  3. Pile on the Protein
If you’re looking for extra protein in your breakfast, an omelet is a great choice. I recommend Egg Whites, which have a high amount of lean protein that will keep you fuller, longer. They also help you maintain strong bones, muscles, nails, and hair. Along with your eggs,Spinach is a leafy-green packed with antioxidants that will make a great addition to your dish. Just one cup of Spinach provides about twice the daily requirement of Vitamin K, which plays an important role in cardiovascular and bone health. Toss in some sliced tomatoes and a sprinkle of feta cheese and your omelet will be filled with enough nutrients to get you through the day.
  4. Fresh, Flavorful Fruit
Fruit is a great addition to any breakfast – especially Grapefruit. It’s packed with antioxidants such as Vitamin C that provide anti-aging benefits, boost immunity, as well as help in lowering cholesterol. All you need is a half of grapefruit to get all its nutrients – and feel free to sprinkle a little sugar on top for added flavor

50+ Celebrities who have had Miscarriages

When news leaks too early that a celebrity woman is pregnant and then she never confirms it, then fails to advance in the pregnancy, there is a high possibility that she might have had a miscarriage.

Since our blog post in 2007 about celebrity miscarriages and the taboo surrounding the topic, many more other sites have reported on celebrity miscarriages and more celebs themselves have been open about discussing a loss that happens in 1 in every 4 pregnancies or among 25% of women.

After TV host and journalist Lisa Ling came out about suffering through one herself, she added a category to her website encouraging women to share their miscarriage stories.

If more women, including celebrities, knew how common miscarriage is and how many have dealt with and suffered through it, but survived, they may be better able to cope if and when it happens to them.

To help that process along, here is a pretty comprehensive listing of all the celebrities we’ve found quoted to have had at least one miscarriage before going on to have a successful pregnancy, adopting, having a child via surrogacy or not at all.

Feel free to comment or add anyone we’ve left off

8 Home Decor Celeb Style Tips on a shoestring budget

Bellyitch Rewind

What sets a celebrity’s home apart? Is it the millions of dollars worth of stuff that they contain? No, it is simply the execution of a plan, meticulous detail and a whole load of imagination. Your home too could look like that of a celebrity, and what’s more, it won’t cost you the world!
Here are 8 tips for updating your home, celeb style!
1) Let’s talk theme: A little known fact is that most celebrities have a common theme running throughout their home. That theme could be the Wild West, as in Mel Gibson’s ranch or lilac and peach, in Halle Berry’s Paris flat. Either way, the benefit of a theme is dual fold, one it is easier to know what kind of home furnishing, accessories and general home decor pieces to go with. And secondly it keeps cost down. How so? Read on…
2) Elegant yet inexpensive: Many celebrities are fixated on a particular color, texture or print. Do the same, when painting your walls, use subtle variants of the same shade to bring about the semblance of a theme throughout the home. One trick to break from the monotony is combining artifacts with the wall paint to create a signature space.
3) Go antique: Remember, vintage never goes out of fashion. To give your home a serious face lift, invest in antiques. Now we don’t mean you break the bank pursuing a statue or painting at auction, we simply mean visit websites for online home accessories. Most such websites have home decoration pieces that look antiquated, but are relatively inexpensive.
4) In the bathroom: Go looking for faucets and fixtures that are vintage. Unlike accessories, you could find these old fixtures rather cheaply at a plumbing supplies store. Make sure they are in a good condition, and aren’t rusted or weathered in any way.
5) Get online for great pieces of art: If you’d like to hang a renowned artwork like the Mona Lisa on your walls, there is a way to do it, for absolutely free. Download a high resolution image of the art from the internet, print it out, and frame it. There, a world famous art work and it didn’t cost you a thing!
6) Make your bath, your Nirvana room: Your bathroom, either big or small can be your oasis of serenity in the maddening world you live in. Invest in small pieces of art work like a Buddha statue, votive scented candles and incense, to make your bathroom, a tranquil oasis of peace, not unlike many celebrities.
7) Fill your bookshelves with rare tomes: If you have a study in your home, ensure that you have some rare books in them. Make the room a regal one where you can escape and enjoy reading a rare book. A coffee table, a nice lush carpet and a curio or two, and you’re sorted.
8) Reupholster/Reuse/Recycle: If you have an old couch, bring it up to speed with a reupholstering, instead of purchasing a new one. Reuse some of your tees, once you’ve sewn them together as pillowcases or comforters. Recycle old milk bottles and tinted beer bottles as ashtrays or flower vases. Put your own unique spin on things. In truth that’s what makes a celeb’s home stand out.

6 tips for helping baby sleep through the night

Every baby is different, so it’s only natural for some to have a more difficult time with nighttime sleep than others. Some babies take to it very well and at a very young age are able to sleep through the night with only the occasional wakeup. Others, however, require a lot of patience and guidance in order to get to point where they can sleep all night. But in every case, there are things parents can do to make things easier for the baby as well as for themselves.
If your baby has trouble sleeping through the night and you are ready to move to the next stage, here are a few tips that may help.
1. Have a routine: To ease your little one into sleep, establish a nighttime routine that you follow without exception. This might include a bath, reading time, and the last feeding of the day. Do whatever works best for your family. Just make it consistent, and make sure it differs from other routines you have through the day.
2. Discourage nighttime feeding: Very early on, it is perfectly natural for an infant to require several feedings during the night, and this can continue for many months if it is not too much trouble for the parents. But if are ready for better nighttime sleep and your child is old enough, you can begin phasing out these feedings. Keep track of how much your baby eats and how much she requires, and make sure she gets enough during the daytime hours while gradually lessening the nighttime feedings.
3. Position the baby well: To minimize the risk of SIDS, most medical authorities recommend placing the baby on her back at bedtime for the first nine months of life (some recommend longer), and this advice is worth heeding. But when the baby gets old enough to move around at will, there is little you can do to control her position. The good news is that she will naturally find the position in which she is most comfortable and in which she will sleep best. So when your baby is old enough, give her the freedom to find her preferred positions.
4. Try different outfits: If your baby seems to wake up a lot, this could be a sign of discomfort resulting from his sleep outfit. Try different things, and make sure you experiment with each item enough nights to draw a conclusion about whether your baby likes it or not.
5. Control room conditions: Also try different conditions in the room where your baby sleeps. Perhaps he does well with a little bit of noise, in which case you can use a fan or a radio to make some gentle white noise. Also make sure you try different temperatures. Childcare experts generally recommend dressing babies a little more warmly than you would dress yourself, but this is not a blanket rule, and some babies tend to get hot in normal room-temperature conditions.
6. Learn baby’s back-to-sleep habits: Watch your baby for several nights to see how she typically reacts when waking up in the middle of the night. If she wakes, fusses for a moment, and then goes back to sleep, make sure you allow her to do this instead of interrupting her natural process. On the other hand, if you can learn to recognize when she is unlikely to get herself back to sleep, you can get to her early and minimize the amount of time she is awake.
