Marrion Cotillard and Natalie Portman are Radiant Promoting Upcoming films

Two of my favorite Oscar winning international actresses, the talented Natalie Portman and Marion Cotillardlooked radiant while promoting their respective upcoming movies at screenings this week.

Israeli born Portman went with a striped gown by The Row at the Israel Film Festival Gala in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, November 9 with her hair in a half-up, half-down style with nude makeup . The Academy Award winner polished doff her look with simple hoops by Eddie Borgo and a Vic Minaudière clutch.

Portman stars in Jackie.

Meanwhile, French actress Cotillard stars in a new  WWII drama Allied alongside costar Brad Pitt and looked fabulous in a navy Christian Dior maxi dress accented with an embroidered white hand-strap clutch by Dior, and side swept coifed hair at a fan event for the film at the Regency Village Theatre on November 9, 2016 in Westwood, California.

Both women have 5-year old boys at home.

Cotillard, who starred in Inception. and her longtime partner of 9-years Guillaume Canet are expecting their second child together. The couple are parents to 5-year old son Marcel.

Portman and her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied are parents to 5-year old son Aleph.

This Korean Ballerina’s Maternity Portraits are Breathtaking

ballet

I usually reserve my International Bumpwatch posts for Saturdays but I couldn’t help but early share this majestic maternity photography of an expecting National Korean Ballerina, Hyo Seon Park.

Artistic and editorial photographer BAKi captured Park en pointe and looking breathtaking as she balances on her toes whilst adjusting for the added weight in her belly!

It is reminiscent of the photo shared widely of Lumina Belle, taken when the trainer of Natalie Portman for The Black Swan was heavily pregnant but still dancing ballet.

There are also photos of Park with her spouse too in some nice pics.

How the Star who Plays Michelle Obama in a New Movie Hid her Pregnancy

tika sumpter
Tika Sumpter, the actress who plays Michelle Obama in an upcoming  movie (Southside with You) about her first date with the future president Barack Obama, is pregnant.

While getting honorarily inducted in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at the organization’s 2016 International Convention (Boulé) on Saturday, July 9, Sumpter revealed her bump in a white sheath dress, thus unofficially announcing her pregnancy.

The Haves and the Have Nots star shared a photo of herself with some leaders of the oldest black sorority in the US. Shortly after, she trended on several social media platforms as news of her pregnancy spread.

Before then, the Gossip Girl alum was quite creative hiding her growing belly from her fans and followers on social media by doing what all celeb women usually do: Only share above the belly photos of themselves. She also used careful hand placement and tent dresses to shield the news before she was ready to reveal it.

Full of love. #birthday #Cabo A photo posted by Tika Sumpter (@tikasumpter) on

She has not shared who her baby’s father is or given any clue as to whom she is in a reationship with so…I guess it’s none of our business. We can talk about her Southside movie.

The movie, which was a hit during the Sundance festival, takes a sneak peek into The Obamas’ first date when a young Michelle was hesitant to go on a date with a young Summer Associate and a community organizer whom she supervised at their law firm. Parker Sawyers plays the future President.

The twosome ended up on daylong date on a hot summer day in 1989 that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

The movie is executive produced by John Legend’s Get Lifted Productions. The movie opens August 26th.

Ayesha Curry, Kim K & Amber Rose: Can Social Media Please Just Let Celeb Moms Live? Let’s Recap…

celeb moms

The Internet is back at it again pitting various celebrity moms against one another and putting them in boxes to be judged, analyzed, picked a part and torn down.

This round, after Kim Kardashian infamously posted a nude selfie this week, she got support from the likes of Sharon Osbourne (who posted her own nude selfie) and Christina Milian (who retweeted Kim K’s second nude selfie with the caption “Love Yourself”), but then also criticized by Bette Midler, Piers Morgan and others, including another one of our blog faves P!nk. Conservative media jumped right on it.

In comes a  fellow Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Amber Rose  who jumped into the fray to call out P!nk for “slut shaming” Kim and of course because Blac Chyna (who recently reportedly broke up with Kim’s brother Rob Kardashian) is ex-besties with Kim and current bffs with Amber, she got dragged into it the mix.

Well we knew that another blog fave, chef and business entrepreneur Ayesha Curry who is married to NBA Basketball star Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors wouldn’t be far behind.

Ayesha trended this morning after someone shared a mini video of her greeting her husband with confetti in the arena tunnel after a tough loss.

And needless to say, people couldn’t handle all that wholesomeness. It was perfect timing with all the Kim K stuff that folks resurrected one of Ayesha’s old tweet from last December where she criticized clothing (not any person), tweeting,” Everyone’s into barely wearing clothes these days huh? Not my style. I like to keep the good stuff covered up for the one who matter” and adding, “Just looking at the latest fashion trends. I’ll take classy over trendy any day of the week. #saturdaynightinsight” Now folks are back at it comparing Ayesha Curry with Kim K. le sigh The social media memes have been off the Richter these past weeks.  Young women are declaring whether they are Kim Kardashian, Ayesha Curry or Amber Rose as if…. The common thread in much of this all is that people (mainly men) are characterizing these celeb moms based on their choice of clothing and how they present themselves in the mass or social media and a few choice words they may have tweeted or captioned in a photo.

sexist men
Current mom-to-be Chrissy Teigen even chimed in:

No one knows much about these women, their parenting styles, their intimate thoughts and their personal inside relationships with the people closest to them. We only know what they choose to put out there in the media and share with the world. Granted being a celebrity and major influential figure like these women are, their every move is scrutinized and over analyzed to the point of exhaustion every day.

Nonetheless, from what I see, they each care for their children, show them love often and prioritize them highly, irrespective of any other parts of their lives, they all seem to be great moms. Of course,  I don’t know if the nanny spends more time with their children but it doesn’t appear that way to me, and even if so, who are we to judge?

I do not mean to suggest that the role of mother supersedes all else but it is a very important one that sits high on top of all their other duties, jobs and responsibilities, even as public figures.

I am totally over the penchant of social media and especially misogynistic male bloggers to reduce these four individuals down to carefully crafted caricatures of what makes a model woman/wife/mom to be placed inside a glass box and used as a tool to criticize other women, black feminism, and put their own spin on things.

Meanwhile, Bette, P!nk and any one else critical of Kim K drew the ire of feminist writers.

But at the end of the day (what a cliché thing to say), it really boils down to labels and boxes that we as a society insist on slapping on women and mothers. It’s not done in a same negative way to men or fathers and that is unfair.

All of this is occurring during the same week of International Women’s Day and smack dab in the middle of Women’s History Month.

Can’t we all just lay off and live and let live?

I think the website Blavity did a good job summarizing this when the staff wrote in a recent piece, “the lesson of the day is that women are human beings, not adjectives, and not clones of who men deem worthy of their attention. Fall in love with who you fall in love with, and if you haven’t yet, keep your bitterness to yourself.”

Amen!

Trend Alert: 80s Acid & Stone Washed Jeans are BACK!

acid wash and stone washed trend

I was in the mall the other day and realized that acid and stone washed denim was back in style. Whoa! How did I miss this during the last season’s international Fashion Weeks ready-to-wear runway shows?

When I last saw that trend, it was the 80s and I was pretty sure back then that it would never make a come back. Never say never because the style has always been spotted on some of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums in recent weeks such as Hayden Panetierre, Busy Phillips, Kim Kardashian and Christina Milian.

And some of the trendier maternity lines are up on it. They have acid and stone washed offerings for the preginista who wants to stay hip and current during pregnancy.

And for new and veteran moms, many non-maternity brands are selling the trend too.

Would you revisit the 80s and go there?

Mother’s Day: Give a socially conscious gift to mom

Thinking of going a non traditional route for a gift for mom this Mother’s Day?
Is your mom no longer with us but you’d like to give something in her memory?
Consider donating in mom’s honor to the International Rescue Committee, which this week launched a campaign of rescue gifts for mothers in developing nations, in conflict or those that recently experienced a natural disaster like Syrai, the Congo or the Phillippines.
For $24, you can gift a safe delivery of a mom that will ensure critical supplies and assistance are provided for a safe childbirth.
For $52, a baby and a mom in a country like Kenya can receive adequate advice, medical assistance and other support. And for $56, a young girl in Afghanistan, for example, can go to school for a year. They’re the perfect gift for the socially conscious or eco-friendly mom in your life and it’s great for last minute gift.
New mom and Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum  Morena Baccarin, Rashida Jones, John Legend, Jencarlos Canela and Sarah Wayne Callies have supported IRC’s efforts.
Ingrid & Isabel, a maternity apparel company, will match all “Rescue Gift” purchases to the IRC up to $30,000 as part of the IRC’s Mother’s Day campaign.
There are more than three dozen gift options at varying prices.  The recipient of each “Rescue Gift” will receive a personalized printed card or an eCard describing the gift and how it will impact the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Your mom’s memory will go to good and that has got make all feel better and someone and some baby’s life better too!

Coming of Age story ‘Little Boy’ opens nationwide today

It’s been five years and two child births coming, but today the film Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, actress, model, mompreneur Ali Landry stars in and supported her husband  Alejandro Monteverde to make, opens to audiences nationwide.

Little Boy is the coming-of-age World War II-era film about an 8-year old boy Pepper Flynt Busbee (Jakob Salvati) crippled with stunted growth who finds courage and uses the power of will, imagination and faith to try to bring his recently-deployed dad back from war.

Landry plays a woman whose husband leaves for war in the film and fun fact: her youngest, Valentin Francesco, appeared in the movie too while in utero (inside his mommy’s tummy) and out as an infant in one of the final film sequences. Landry is close to 9-months pregnant in one scene and another features her cradling  then-newborn Valentin .

I got a chance to interview Monteverde who co-wrote, produced and directed the movie and gather more insight into its making.
He said he thought the movie would take three months to write but it ended up taking three years. From completion to editing to post production, it has turned into a 5 year project.
The previews project a very visual image of Americana. It’s not just a caricature but a living duplication of that era as I learned  Monteverde created 95% of the town where Little Boy is set — from scratch.
“It was great to work with because we had real cement, light poles, streets and street signs, ” Monteverde reveals.
It’s worth it because scenes from the movie certainly evoke nostalgia of an era long passed. A real-authentic set distinguishes the movie from a lot of current films made in this era of CGI movie magic where scenes in a digital lab are created after the actors go home.
If the setting looks familiar maybe it’s because Monteverde got the inspiration for the entire town from one of those classic Normal Rockwell paintings. It certainly oozes of Midwestern puritanical innocence and optimism.
But that comfort and secure is abruptly interrupted with the realism of war, prejudice and discrimination, as it was a time when Japanese Americans were interned in camps.
The movie is also a modern fable set in the 1940s, Monteverde says of the story line that has several lessons interwoven throughout.
What also appears unique is that the film explores the vulnerability and emotions of a boy. These days movies about feelings are usually centered around female or little girl characters.
Another element that may stand out to movie goers is  how Little Boy seems to evoke themes of God, religion, agnosticism and spirituality.
WATCH THE TRAILER

“The deeper I got into the movie, the more layers we uncovered,” the film maker reveals about the project which he says touches so many different themes. “It’s like when you plant a seed, you don’t know how it will come into fruition. As we saw the film take form, all those little things we were writing about in the beginning start to come out.”
There are a lot of subtexts, he adds.
“It’s about the power of the will and believing in the impossible…we are every day faced with many challenges in our lives and the world belongs to those who believe they can overcome those challenges,” added Monteverde.
“It depends how deep you want to go. You can take what you can from the external layers or you can watch it and discover the other layers; about discrimination, racism, faith v. superstition, will of man v. will of God.”
In the film, main character Pepper’s mentors include a Catholic priest advisor and an agnostic atheist shopkeeper Hashimoto, who Pepper befriends. Both influence Pepper and help him come away with what he is looking for and needs– a way to bring his dad back from war.
There has been a lot of buzz and chatter about the timeline of the movie which takes place before the US retaliated against the Japanese for its attack on Pearl Harbor by dropping the atomic bomb, euphemistically called a “Little Boy” on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. There is an intricate link you’ll get when you see the movie, Monteverde explains.
Monteverde isn’t surprised by the various notions and interpretations the movie is getting.
“This movie explores the pain that World War II  – a war that caused hurt to the world and mainly here in the United States, the hurt that happened at the home front” to those the soldiers left behind and had to deal with the consequence of  their loved ones going to fight. “The foundation of the way the story was born  was I wanted to tell the ultimate underdog story – the one that everyone is against.”
And there is a bit of art imitating life when it comes to the production in that vein.
Compared to his last award-winning project Bella  which took top prize at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, Monteverde had a much bigger budget to utilize to breathe life into this project, about $20 million, but in the grand scheme compared to much larger blockbusters released each year, it’s quite modest, Montverde reveals.
And there he draws the parallels of the theme of the movie along with the symbolism of it being released a week before the highly anticipated Avengers sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Monteverde spoke some about the challenges he faces for a movie that doesn’t have too many bill boards but will spread by ‘word of mouth.’
“The whole movie it about size…the small v. big..the David and Goliath story,” he muses. “The little boy being shorter than everyone else trying to bring about the end to the biggest war. We are little boy. The character.”
We are rooting it on because we love to support our Bellyitch bumpwatch alum families and cheer on the underdog.
Go see Little Boy this weekend and report back and let us know what you think in the comments below or in social media at @Bellyitch on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
The last two best director Oscars went to directors of Mexican origin, Alejandro González Iñárritu for Boyhood and Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity. Perhaps Monteverde can be the third!
