What Not to Say to Someone Who Suffers a Miscarrage (INFOGRAPHIC)

When people learn that someone they know like a friend, colleage, or relative has had a miscarriage, they often have good intentions when they respond to the news. Unfortunately, those well wishes do not always manifest themselves into the right words.

We let out cringe-worthy comments the kinda rub salt in an already very wounded sore. So, that is whey this infographic that Dr. Jessica Zucker of the #iHadAMiscarriage hashtag campaign created  with cartoonist Ryan Alexander-Tanner, an award-winning Portland-based artist and educator, on what not to say is right on time and very on point!

Rainbow Maternity and New Born Shoots Honor Life After Loss

rainbow-baby

Rainbow maternity and newborn maternity shoots are trending ways to honor an “at last” pregnancy or baby after a miscarriage, stillborn, neonatal death or infant loss.

The term is symbolic to a rainbow that appears after a storm.  People are even incorporating the theme in their pregnancy and birth announcements as some examples can be seen here.  There are more and more articles about couples that are capturing their rainbow journey in the media like this touching story about one woman we spotted in PEOPLE magazine earlier this year.

Along the way, we have also spotted some wonderful and heart-warming photo shoots out there that have captured our hearts. Here are a few:

Daytime Emmy Red Carpet where Neutral and Sheer Reigned

6974a3a4-d093-4b7e-b70d-d7f7c66a6beb

Yesterday was the Daytime Emmy Awards held at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California.

You can find a list of winners here!

Doing our usual red carpet scope out of the moms we have featured before on the blog, we saw the neutral and sheer trend still reigning strong.

Tamera Mowry poses for a portrait at “Portraits by The Artists Project Sponsored by Foster Granton” during the 44th Daytime Emmy Awards on April 30, 2017.

In a surprise shift from her usual conservative dress, Tamera Mowry-Housley showed out in a blush jeweled with pearls Tony Ward ball gown with nude tulle overlay and a sheer peekaboo top. Okay Tamera! We see you stepping out of your comfort zone.

img_5101

Not suprisingly embracing her curves was her co-host on her FOX syndicated show The Real Adrienne Bailonwho also went with neutral tone in a one shoulder curve-hugging. Love!

Jeanne Mai wore white and she, Loni Love and the entire cast posed backstage for a cast photo as part of the “Portraits by The Artists Project Sponsored by Foster Granton” all looking spectacular!

Their old co-host Tamera Braxton-Herbert, who was let go from the show this season, also looked amazing in a neutral tone ball gown as well. She infamously announced days before the show her plans to join the ladies of the cast had they won.

We didn’t get to see that awkward moment (given how devastated Tamar looked in The Braxton Family values airing of her reaction to getting fired and her unfollowing any friend who guest appeared on the show since).

Aisha Tylers show The Talk won their category.  She was joined by our other Bumpwatch alum, Sara Gilbert on stage.

Oh and Toni Braxton was there looking fab in black!

Her sis Tamar tried to help fluff her dress but ended up revealing a little extra leg and thigh action. Not that Toni is a stranger to the high slit dress.

Tamar’s dress from Steven Khalil‘s store was spectacular on its own.

We also spotted one of our OG (original) Bumpwatch mom’s Garcelle Beauvais.

Courtney Mazza accompanied her TV host hubby Mario Lopez as well.

She Didn’t Know the Baby She Bought Illegally after Faking Her Pregnancy Would Be Half Black

img_5072

Police arrested an Italian woman who faked her pregnancy, bought a baby and then returned the baby after discovering it was half black.

The 35-year old woman suffered two miscarriages after she previously got pregnant with her boyfriend, who is in prison, according to officials in a town south of Rome.

She told police she wore a fake latex belly bought online to trick her friends and family into thinking she was pregnant.

The woman, who has not been named, allegedly paid a little over $21,000 for the baby girl but gave her back three days later when the baby delivered was of mixed race.

She told police she would have no way of explaining the baby’s skin color to her man, her fam and friends so she gave her back.

Thing is–surrogacy is illegal in Italy and punishable by two years in prison and heafty fines.

Authorities got suspicious when someone called the birth registry office asking how to register a baby born home but that person  failed to show up for the scheduled appointment to register the baby.

Police found the baby in good health with her  biological father, a Mali man who works in Rome.

That African man apparently had a brief relationship with a 25-year old Romanian woman who is the baby’s biological mom, the supposed surrogate.

That mom and a Moroccan man who helped broker the sale of the baby were also arrested along with the fake mom.

The one-month-old baby girl is believed to have been placed in foster care.

Authors: Sorry to Rain on Your Twin Obsession Parade, But Twins Are Risky, Period

twins-1628843_1280

Twins are always considered a blessing and lately, they’ve been getting even more glorification, especially with celebs like Beyonce and Amal Clooney making recent headlines for the fact they are carrying twins.

But as with any celebration, there are those who will swoop in to offer a reality check. Like one Daily Mail columnist, Jill Foster, herself a mom, who wrote about how twin pregnancies are high risk and come with a boat load of additional concerns, cautions and care that mom (and dad) must undertake.

“Multiple births are fraught with risk, no matter how rich you are,” Foster writes in a recent column. “Carrying my twin girls was the most arduous and terrifying thing I’ve done — and the professionals agree with me.”

She quotes consultant obstetrician and gynecologist Shazia Malik, a sub-specialist in reproductive medicine at London’s Portland Hospital, who said that “people underestimate the risks of a multiple pregnancy.”

There is a risk “of miscarriage, stillbirth or pre-term birth is around five times higher than a singleton pregnancy. Once premature babies are born, they may spend several weeks or even months in Special Care and may have growth restriction, brain damage, problems with vision and later have developmental delay,” Malik said.

She adds: “There’s a higher risk to the mother, too, of developing gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, which could lead to death.”

Foster says her identical twin daughters were conceived without medical intervention but that she went thru her pregnancy in fear because her twins developed in the same sac, increasing the chances of dual death were something to go wrong.

“At 11 weeks’ pregnant, I’d learned that the babies were growing in the same amniotic sac. Called a mono-amniotic pregnancy, it meant their umbilical cords could easily become entwined and strangulated.

“Not even one baby would survive if this happened. They would live or die together, and death would be sudden or spontaneous. I lived my pregnancy on a knife edge. It seemed sensible to only tell my closest family and friends.”

She also thinks she suffered post partum depression which is common among moms of multiples.

According to the Twins and Multiple Birth Association (TAMBA), mothers of multiples have almost twice the average risk of postnatal depression and it tends to last longer and can still require treatment up to seven years after the birth.

Then there are the myths of twin pregnancies.  In a new book Twin Mythconceptions: False Beliefs, Fables, and Facts about TwinsDr. Nancy L. Segal attempts to bust over 70 myths regarding twin pregnancies.

Here are some of the top 10 Myths, (many of which we have blogged about before here on Bellyitch), Dr. Segal has identified:

the “Top 10” myths or beliefs about twins, which include:

  • Identical twins can communicate by extrasensory perception or ESP (False)

o   There is no scientific evidence that twins exchange thoughts or ideas by reading each other’s minds—identical twins’ social closeness is better explained by studies showing that their common genes underlie their within-pair communication skills.

  • Older mothers are more likely to conceive fraternal twins than younger mothers (True)

o   Since releasing two eggs at the same time is not typical, this is possibly a reflection of the aging process.

  • Identical twins have identical fingerprints (False)

o   These features, which develop between the 10th and 25th gestational week, are affected by factors such as temperature, intrauterine position and density of amniotic fluid near the fingers.

  • Your consumption of yams and other dietary choices increase the chances of conceiving fraternal twins (True)

o   It is thought that the white yam contains fertility-inducing properties that trick the female body into releasing hormones that promote ovulation–this may partly explain the high fraternal twinning rate among the Yorùbá of western Nigeria.

Dr. Segal is currently Professor of Psychology at California State University, Fullerton and Director of the Twin Studies Center. She has authored more than 200 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as four highly acclaimed books on twins.

The moral of the story is celebrate twin births. Admire them. Dote on moms carrying twins. Offer help and support to family and friends who deliver twins, especially afterwards, given the higher PPD risk. But certainly, be very aware that they are risky pregnancies and deserve extra care and consideration before venturing into IVF in hopes of carrying them if you cannot conceive a set without medical intervention. Don’t let these celebrities out here lull you into a fairy tale la la land.

img_4368

Natalie Nunn is patiently waiting the birth of her first child with husband Jacob Payne.

The expectant Bad Girls Club alum gave her fans and followers on Instagram recently.

“Yeap still pregnant over here,” Nunn shared while also professing to be still on her fit and pregnant challenge, a couple of weeks ago.

Since starring in a series of reality Tv shows, Nunn shed some serious weight and started a service promoting healthy weight loss for other women.  She said the new biz has been a catalyst for turning a devastating miscarriage suffered earlier into a positive

And we also peeped that in her recent 40 weeks and term IG post she also used the hashtag #mommyblogger. Nice and heartwarming to see that she’s ready to join the profession.

“Pregnancy has been amazing! It’s the only time in my life I have no control of my life!” she captioned the pic of herself in a denim maternity dress. “Haha I cant control how I’m going to feel some days I feel great and other days I would have morning sickness literally all day! Study: Daily Asprin Intake Increases Chance of Getting Pregnant

img_2327

For some women who are trying to get pregnant, taking a low dose of aspirin daily may boost their chances of having a baby, according to a new analysis.

The analysis, which looked at women who’d had a prior pregnancy loss and taken part in an earlier study, found that women who benefited from the aspirin regimen had high blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation in the body. Among these women, those who took a daily aspirin were 31 percent more likely to become pregnant, and 35 percent more likely to carry a pregnancy to term, than those who took a placebo.

Prior to this report, researchers knew that inflammation in the body could contribute to reproductive problems. For example, women with pelvic inflammatory disease or polycystic ovary syndrome — two conditions that involve inflammation — are at increased risk for infertility. But few studies have examined whether lowering levels of inflammation in a woman’s body would affect her chances of successfully becoming pregnant and giving birth.

In the new analysis, the researchers analyzed information from more than 1,200 U.S. women ages 18 to 40 who had previously experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth. The women were randomly assigned to take either a low dose of daily aspirin (81 milligrams) — which is thought to counteract inflammation — or a placebo, for six menstrual cycles while they were trying to become pregnant. If the women became pregnant, they continued taking the pills until 36 weeks of pregnancy. (A full-term pregnancy is 39 to 40 weeks)

Beyonce Will Join This Growing List of Celebrities with Twins

beyonce-twins

Another celebrity diva is expecting twins! Beyonce announced on her Instagram page today  that she and her husband Jay-Z are expecting twins. She posted an artistic photo of herself in bra and undies wearing a veil sitting in a bed of flowers and roses.

She joins fellow singing diva Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez in twin motherhood and others like WNBA player Glory Johnson; celebrity spouses (or ex) Adrienne Bosh, Kayte Grammar, Kim Porter; Actresses Angelina Jolie,  Geena Davis, Anna PaquinDaya Vaidya, Garcelle Beauvais, Molly Ringwald, Mo’Nique, Sherri Saum, Holly Robinson-Peete, Rebecca Romijn,  Marcia Cross, Lisa Marie Presley, including via surrogates as with Sarah Jessica ParkerAngela Basset, Julie Bowen, Neil Patrick HarrisRicky Martin, among others.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR ODDS OF GIVING BIRTH TO TWINS

“We would like to share our love and happiness,” the 20-time Grammy winner captioned the baby bump photo which has been shared 2M times as of this posting. “We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.”

Also, there is something about Grammy Awards  when it comes to Beyonce announcing a pregnancy. She shared the news of her pregnancy with her first child, Blue Ivy following a performance in 2011 (arguably starting the red carpet reveal trend) and today, a couple weeks before the Grammy’s, here she is again to with baby news.

For the most part, the singer-songwriter has kept a lay profile for a while now since wrapping up her world tour last year. [side bar: I was just thinking about how Adele ended her tour by announcing she would be off to try to get pregnant again]

There has been a lot of speculation about a second child for several years now. And also, for the record, this is her third pregnancy.  In 2013, the multi-platinum selling artist revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage prior to the arrival of her daughter.

“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” she revealed in a self-produced HBO documentary. “And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.

“I picked out names. I envisioned what my child would look like. I was feeling very maternal.

“I flew back to New York to get my check up – and no heartbeat. Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat.

“I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life. And it was actually the first song I wrote for my album. And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through.”

I am excited for her and Blue Ivy, her daughter with Jay-Z. I am also looking forward to the bump watch and checking out what she will wear to this year’s Grammy red carpet on February 12.

This news comes the same week we learned about Pharrell Williams‘ triplets.

Multiples are the new singleton.  lol

STUDY: Mom’s Blood Pressure During Pregnancy Could Predict Baby’s Gender

baby-1767974_1280

The gender of a woman’s future child may be linked to her blood pressure six months before she becomes pregnant, a preliminary study suggests.

A team of Canadian and Chinese researchers found that a higher pre-pregnancy blood pressure reading may be associated with a greater likelihood for delivering a baby boy. Conversely, lower blood pressure may favor the odds of giving birth to a girl.

But the researchers only found an association between pre-pregnancy blood pressure and a baby’s gender. They did not prove a cause-and-effect connection.

How might a mom-to-be’s blood pressure predict her baby’s gender? That’s not completely clear. The researchers suspect blood pressure may be related to the gender of those babies carried to term, not lost to miscarriage.

“When a woman becomes pregnant, the sex of a fetus is determined by whether the father’s sperm provides an X or Y chromosome, and there is no evidence that this probability varies in humans,” said study lead author Dr. Ravi Retnakaran.

Only Everyone’s Favorite Bohemian P!nk Could Take Such a Breathtaking Maternity Portrait

pink-announces-second-pregnancy-with-adorable-mother-daughter-instagram-photo-the-huffington-post

P!nk has an earthy soul to me. She is my spirit animal of my inner Bohemian so I was most definitely digging this maternity portrait she did with her 5-year old daughter Willow featured in it.

The “Just give me a reason” singer is sitting topless on a stool, wearing bits of nature as jewelry only and Willow’s hands are covering her breast as the award-winning recording artist and The Voice adviser looks down at her almost term pregnant belly. The photo was taken by photographer Deborah Anderson of Deborah Anderson Creative.

P!nk and her husband Cary Hart are expecting their second child. The platinum-selling singer did an excellent job of concealing this news from most people in the public. She recently announced it with an Instagram post while clearly deep into the pregnancy because she had a very large belly at the time.

Pink, whose real name is Alecia Moore, and husband Cary Hart welcomed Willow in June 2011. The couple got married in Costa Rica in 2006.

When she made her surprise announcement, she joined a long list of celebrity women who did an excellent job concealing their pregnancy from the media and public for most of their term including  Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Evangeline Lilly and others who waited past the second trimester to share the news, or in the case of Hudson and Lily, get busted by paparazzi. Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Beyonce all waited until after the typical 3-month mark.
