10 ways to prepare your baby for getting shots

Your child has a date with the family doctor, for a vaccination. Perhaps it’s time for flu shots. Even if you don’t have an appointment scheduled now, eventually she is going to have to face the needle; something neither of you is looking forward to. So what is the best way to prepare her for it? Here are 10 tips for preparing your child for a shot:
  1. Hypnosis – For truly phobic young patients, hypnosis has been a successful means of treatment. The children eventually overcome their fear of getting shots. Make sure you find a licensed provider and are aware that this therapy does not work for everyone.
  2. Distraction – Anticipation makes the experience far more ominous and scary than it would otherwise be. If you can preoccupy your child just prior to administering the shot, it will take the edge off.
  3. Lidocaine – When applied to the area where the shot will be given, this medication can dull the sensation and make the shot not hurt (as much). Some doctors also use cold spray to numb the area before giving an injection.
  4. Sing – A comforting, lilting familiar voice can work some serious magic on a child’s nerves. The sound of their mother’s voice literally has a soothing physiological effect on children, reducing the heart rate and lowering anxiety levels.
  5. Discuss, don’t dwell – Explain to your child what you will doing at the doctor’s office, including the shot. Focus more on the check-up and other factors, and maintain an upbeat tone. If you dread it, so will they.
  6. Surprise – Alternately, you can opt to avoid any discussion about the shot itself, to alleviate any anxiety if your child is prone to worrying. Tell them just before the shot happens so they have a little time to mentally prepare, however.
  7. Bring a Game – Provide some entertainment as a distraction and to keep your child in good spirits prior to the shot. The less they think about it, the less it will hurt.
  8. Bring Fun Bandages – Let him pick out some Scooby-Doo or Sponge Bob bandages and make preparation for the shot a fun experience.
  9. Read a book – Better yet, have your child read a book aloud, and get immersed in an enjoyable story. Like a game, this will help them keep their mind off the shot and lessen their anxiety.
  10. Educate – Tell your child about vaccines, illnesses, and why it’s important to have shots on occasion. The more they know about the importance, the more likely they are to stay strong and suffer without complaint when the time comes. After all, even a child knows it is better to hurt a little now than be sick for a long time later.

Two Studies this week extol the virtue of exposing kids to germs

Two new studies were released this week that addressed those uber cautious new parents who go above and beyond to protect their babies from dirt, germs and potentially dangerous foods to the point they end up contributing to their children developing dangerous allergies.
One study found that parents who give their children peanut products early in life can prevent them from becoming allergic to peanuts. The trial was done on 600 babies worldwide with high risk of developing a peanut allergy. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Currently, about 400,000 US children have peanut allergies, CNN  reports
A separate Swedish study published in the journal Pediatrics found that children who lived in homes where the dishes were washed by hand were less likely to develop allergic asthma or eczema compared to children living in homes with a machine dishwasher. Researchers surveyed over 1,000 families with children between the ages of 7 and 8,
Here too there is a suggestion that exposure to an array of microbes in early life helps a child develop a healthy immune system.
Both developments speak to the importance of not going overboard to shield babies and children from germs because parents may be doing them more harm than good.

This week’s Must-Have Celeb Mom Casual Fashion Picks

I am always looking for hip, trendy, style inspiration and ideas and find it often in some of my fave celeb style icons, and not just the celeb moms either.
For example, today, I’m crushing on Kylie Jenner‘s Tom Ford lace up boots and Elizabeth and James Cynnie Sling leather backpack.
I live in work-out clothes and am always in a gym or group exercise studio so Reese Witherspoon‘s Sweaty Betty  sports shirt is drool-worthy as are her fave current sneakers, the Nike Women’s Air Zoom fElite 7 Running shoes.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
The weather is supposed to be springy but it’s always wet in my parts so Jessica Alba’s Burbery Prorsum Belted Sateen Trench Coat looks like it’ would be a God-send.

Gwen Stefani is a soccer mom and stays comfy in sporty gear. I’m feeling her Pam & Gela Cropped Silk Pants that she wore while out and about with her boys recently.
Finally, my girl Beyonce was giving me life in her latest upbeat and fun video for 7/11. I got to have that Suburban riot KALE sweatshirt she wore in the opening sequence to the high-energy music video. Good luck getting your hands on one because it is currently SOLD OUT!

It’s not for everyone and I’m certain the Bey haters won’t be feeling this video. I love it! It’s old’ish tho. Check it out:

3 Men simulate pregnancy to promo new book

Three men have willingly signed up to a month of broken sleep, irrepressible urges to dash to the toilet and aching backs in the lead up to Mother’s Day in the UK on March 15.
The trio of publisher fathers in their 40s, Jason Bramley, Steve Hanson and Jonny Biggins, have donned 33-pound baby bump suits to show solidarity with expectant mothers – and help promote their latest publication, The Book of Mums.
The men have been wearing the suits, which come complete with fake breasts and are designed to put pressure on the bladder, stomach and lungs, all day and night, and are only allowed to remove them to wash.
It’s given them some idea at least of the trials and tribulations of life during the third trimester of pregnancy, if their diary entries to date are anything to go by.

Study: Breastfed babies have lower arsenic exposure than bottle fed ones

Babies who are breastfed have lower arsenic exposure than babies who are fed formula, according to a new study.

The powder and water used to make the baby formula may be sources of arsenic, which occurs naturally in the environment and in large doses is linked to serious health problems, the researchers write in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

It’s not clear, however, whether the low levels of arsenic exposure in the study will turn out to be harmful, the researchers say.

Parents who need to use formula to feed their infants shouldn’t feel badly about the new findings, said Kathryn Cottingham, one of the study’s lead authors. Instead, they should pay attention to the water they’re using to make baby formula.

Oscars 2015: What Celebrity Moms Wore on the Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

In addition to the celeb moms we’ve covered in the past who were nominated last night (Reese Witherspoon, Marion Cottilard, Keira Knightley, and Sienna Miller) and those new moms (Scarlett Johansson and Zoe Saldana), we also saw some uber wow-worthy dresses and looks from our other Bellyitch bumpwatch alums at the 87th Annual Academy Awards which took place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California last night.

Blush dresses were trending and Jennifer Lopez looked stunning as usual in a Cinderella-style Elli Saab dress with a cute little Salvatore Ferragamo clutch. Love the all neutral look. Simple and elegant.

This has got to be my all time fave look on Kerry Washington ever. This embroidered Miu Miu blush tone peplum dress was a stand out last night. She accented the look with Fred Leigton jewels, jeweled Christian Louboutin pumps and a Miu Miu box clutch.

I thought Jenna Dewan-Tatum  too stood out in all white Zuhair Murad Couture gown, accessorized with diamonds and a Lee Savage clutch. Love how the pop of red lip made this look stand out. So graceful.
It was a safe yet another knockout look from Jennifer Hudson who dazzled in a Romona Keveza and Jimmy Choo sandals. I loved the Oscar winner’s make up too. She slayed!

Anna Farris looked angelic in this shimmery Zuhair Murad Couture dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals, a Judith Leiber clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Georgina Chapman looked stunning in a black with embroidered floral Marchesa dress of course.

Not a mom but my fave for the night was  Samurai Girl actress Jamie Chung in an absolutely gorgeous Yanina Couture gown. Love it!

Jane Fonda wowed for a woman in her late 70’s in this Zuhair Murad Couture sheer jumper with Niwaka jewels. Amazing a woman of her maturity can pull off such a hawt look.  Me love it!

Tips on getting pregnant after using birth control

Getting pregnant after birth control can pose a number of challenges. The most technically difficult of the lot is the pill that play around with your hormonal balance. So if you are using contraception and the pill or anything else, you need proper guidelines on how to conceive after they stop using contraception. You may be disappointed if you start trying for a baby without knowing the appropriate time frame to conceive.
Here is how you should go get pregnant after using birth control.
Tips for getting pregnant after birth control:
1. You can not be entirely sure what to be on birth control pills do to your reproductive system. When you are taking these pills do not ovulate at all. Yes, the hormone suppresses ovulation and periods obtained are due to the sudden drop in hormone levels when they stop taking the pill.
2. Usually, the last 3 tablets are placebo because they have little or no hormones in them. So you get your periods of 2 to 4 days to stop the pills. Now, after giving your body this dose, however small, of the hormone, it takes time for your ovaries to return to normal.
3. The body of every woman and the system is different. Some women can get pregnant a few days after stopping birth control pills, while others have to wait for some circles. Ideally, you should wait for your natural cycle to happen first before trying to conceive.
4. Sometimes you can not get your periods after stopping the pill, because the eggs are taking time to mature after a long sabbatical. Basically, the body’s hormonal balance has to get back on track after using birth control.
5. If you have a history of miscarriages or other abnormalities, then it is better to wait for 3 normal cycles before conceiving. This eliminates the risk of bleeding during pregnancy unnatural.
6. Other birth control methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) allow you to design faster. The copper IUD as using the base metal must be removed physically in the chamber of physicians and takes only a few minutes, you can get pregnant after using birth control of this type immediately.
7. The patches are also hormonal IUDs, but you may have to wait for a normal cycle before you start thinking about how to conceive. Although not affected as much as the pills that have an impact on hormone balance.
8. Barrier methods like condoms and diaphragms are best when trying to conceive quickly. You can get pregnant as soon as you stop using them!
Follow these tips to understand the process and the science behind birth control. You can get pregnant after using the methods of birth control once you understand the workings behind it.

Oscars 2015: We can’t believe these two just had babies

There is something about Atelier Versace tonight because the design house managed to outfit two brand new moms and had them looking amazing!

We couldn’t believe that these two women had babies less than 6 months ago (daughter Rose with fiance Romain Dauriac). After giving birth in September 2014, Scarlett Johansson looked stunning in an emerald figure-hugging halter dress with a crystal Swarvoski embellished collar.

Similarly, Zoe Saldana gave birth to twin sons, Cy and Bowie with husband Marc Perego on November 27, and  she too had “wow”-worthy moment on the red carpet and while presenting on stage in a gorge blush-colored Atelier Versace.

They both looked phenomenal!

Oscars 2015: Celebrity moms nominated for awards

Good luck to all the lovely celebrity women we’ve spotlighted and “bumpwatched” in the past who are up for awards tonight at the Academy Awards held this year at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. All their hard work may pay off with recognition of the highest order.
And since we didn’t get a spot on this year’s red carpet, we couldn’t ask them more as Reese would like so we’re just gonna put down here where they were wearing anyway! ha!
Best Actress nominee for Two Days, One Night, Marion Cotillard dazzled in a white sleeveless Christian Dior Spring 2015 gown. It lacked shape but worked.

Mom-to-be Keira Knightley (nominated for Best Supporting Actress  for The Imitation Game) went bold in a beautiful flowy custom Valentino couture gown and Reese Witherspoon (nominated for Best Actress for Wildwas a favorite in an off the shoulder white with black accented Tom Ford dress with jewels by Tiffany & Co. Finally, Sienna Miller, whose film The American Sniper is up for Best Picture looked stunning as usual in a gorge Oscar de la Renta gown.
Good luck, ladies!
