STUDY: Colorado reports weed effects on kids whose mom’s smoked while pregnant

The state of Colorado released a comprehensive 188-page report today about the health effects of smoking marijuana which also included its impact on infants.
According to the study, marijuana usage by pregnant women is associated with negative effects on children including decreased academic ability, cognitive function and attention.
The report noted that the symptoms may not appear until the baby’s adolescence yet can be directly linked to his mom’s pot smoking.

New York Times photojournalist: Pregnant and shooting war-torn battlegrounds

Imagine getting the assignment of your professional life as a photojournalist: a 10-day gig from New York Times to capture moments in time in war torn nations in Africa and the Middle East.
Then imagine discovering you are pregnant soon thereafter. What to do?
Do you risk the life and health of your unborn child and turn down the assignment?
Or do you endure the nausea and exhaustion, having to be mindful to avoid airport radiation, contaminated food and deal with the fact you cannot take medication like Cipro to guard against malaria because it isn’t recommended for pregnant women?
Lynsey Addario took that challenge and found herself walking into Somali refugee camps in Kenya where people were dying whilst a new forming life inside her was kicking.
Not being able to fully enjoy all the first and joys other first-time-moms experience over fear about the risk she was subjecting her baby to are all covered in this brilliantly written introspective recently published in the paper.
While it was a very risky adventure that most wouldn’t dare undertake, Addario’s story is a testament to the fact that pregnancy is not an adherence to anything in life and women can do anything and are stronger than thought.

Idina Menzel’s fab Super Bowl peformance: Get the Look (VIDEO)

Bravo to our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Idina Menzel on her beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner last night before the Super Bowl.
Menzel stunned Oscar audiences last year during her performance of the Academy Award winning Best Original Song “Let It Go” from the wildly popular Disney animated movie Frozen.  She really did sang her heart out! Yes, I said SANG.
Menzel, who has a 5-year old son, Walker Diggs, with actor Taye Diggs, will launch a world tour next summer and will soon star in a new sitcom pilot called Happy Time executive produced by Ellen DeGeneres.

We also were wondering, who made that stunning and bold two finger statement ring she wore with her very smart and well fitted Angel Sanchez jumpsuit with black peep toe Jimmy Choo platforms.

It’s a custom piece by Jacobs & Co! Nice!

Check out the marvelous performance below:

The Super Bowl 2015 Commercials moms loved most

Congrats to Tom Brady the husband of our two-time Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Gisele Bundchen  and his fellow players and team, the New England Patriots on their SuperBowl win.
Since many of us who watched tonight’s game were just there for the commercials and not necessarily for the sport, here are the fave commercials the moms loved the most:
One of the winners of this year’s Doritos “crash the Superbowl” contest Scott Zabielski did a great job with his hilarious commercial that featured a baby! We love babies here!

Dodge‘s commercial with people 100 years and older providing age-old wisdom was great and inspirational!

Microsoft‘s commercial about a 6-year old Braylon O’Neill who was born without tibia and fibular bones in both his legs had us in tears and happy at the same time:

And we were in tears over the Toyota commercial “To Be Dad” saluting great fathers! Yes! just Yass!!

And Dove too kept us weeping with its #RealStrength Dove Men + Care dad tribute:

And as long as the waterworks are going, how about Proctor and Gamble‘s “Like A Girl” commercial? *sniff* If you didn’t see this campaign which launched about a year ago, you may have been upset about it at first until you realize it is an empowerment message! Good job!

T-Mobile hired our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kim Kardashian to do a spoof of one of those cause commercials but this time about losing your unused data. Check it:

Mercedes-Benz’ classic take on The Tortoise and the Hare fable was cute and effective because everyone can relate to the Tortoise and root him on:

We love puppies too so, naturally, the Budweiser commercial featuring a man, his puppy and some horses was another fave:

What mom doesn’t like a campaign that will get their adult kids to call them or give them free hugs!

And you get a free meal to boot! Nice, McDonald’s:

Esurance scored big with a funny commercial about the importance of getting an insurance plan tailored to you and just you, not sort of you. Extra points for giving Lindsay Lohan a gig! She needs as many as she can get.

And the most unfortunate went to Nationwide who decided to draw on the heartstrings of every mom with the endearing sad story of a little boy declaring all the wonderful possibilities in life he wouldn’t get to experience…because he died! From falling out the window or drowning in a tub or drinking Drano! Wow!

But luckily, they did score big with their commercial before featuring comedienne Mindy Kaling!

Justin Timberlake finally confirms Jessica Biels’ pregnancy

So Justin Timberlake just confirmed the worst-kept secret in a little while, that he and his wife actress Jessica Biel are expecting their first child together.
“Thank you EVERYONE for the Bday wishes!,” he captioned on Instagram. “This year, I’m getting the GREATEST GIFT EVER. CAN’T WAIT. #BoyOrGirl #YouNeverKnow #WeDontEvenKnow #WeAreTakingBets”
Gossip blogs and websites have long, since October, speculated that the duo, who have been married since 2012, were expecting. And…there have been quite a few sightings and postings with photos of Mrs. Timberlake out and about with quite a bulbous bump. And…their close friends kept accidentally confirming it in the media.
But anyway, Happy Birthday Justin and Congrats you two!

Celeb Maternity Fave: Denim and Maxi Dress (HOW TO WEAR IT)

The classic denim jacket worn over a maxi dress has become a uniform for pregnant celebrities as everyone from Kim Kardashian, to Jenna Dewan-Tatum to Alyson Hannigan,  Vanessa Lachey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar have been spotted in the style ensemble look.

It’s a pretty easy way to stay comfortable in a flowy dress and still fashionable. The denim jacket doesn’t have to be blue denim either. You can use colored denims, black or white and have the same framing effect of minmizing the potential muu-muu visual impact of wearing a maxi dress alone while preggers.

Below are three style palette options to pull off the look which is also great because it can be worn with flats, sandals, ballet flats, Mary Janes or even Doc Martin’s or Chuck Taylors. It’s that versatile!

Eco-Friday: How to have a Baby Clothes Swap Party

 swaps!
Personally, I have attended a couple of clothing/closet swap parties for adults where girlfriends get together, take turns and shop each others’ clothes that we won’t wear any longer. It is a trendy and economical way to get “new” clothes without breaking the bank and swapping out your wardrobe.
In these tough economic times, purchasing new clothes for an impending arrival, especially for families on a budget and with more than one child, is not always an option. Organizing a baby swap is a very wonderful way for everyone to save a buck and get some new stuff. Here are some tips I gleaned from online research:

Step 1 – Select a date.

  •  Based on your schedule and your family’s schedule, select a date that best works for you.
  •  From there, decide if your swap will host both kids and adults – this will also help in determining the time of your swap (daytime vs. nighttime), the food, the activities, etc.

Step 2 – Declutter.

  • Get the word out about your Clothing Swap house party sooner rather than later. This gives everyone ample time to clean out their closets and find items to swap.
  •  Make sure to invite your  guests three-to-four weeks in advance. With your invites, give your guests the following instructions:

What to bring:
Kids clothes and accessories in all sizes that are wearable and freshly laundered.
Most swap-worthy items fall into 3 categories

  • NEW Clothes (with tags)
  • NEARLY NEW Clothes (worn only once or twice)
  • GENTLY USED Clothes (worn, but still in very good condition)

What NOT to bring:
Out of respect for fellow swappers and your community, please do not bring ripped, dirty, stained items, those with broken zippers, or otherwise unwearable.

Note that all unclaimed items can be donated to a host selected non-profit or cause.
Step 3 – Prepare for your party.
You can create a successful swap by designating different areas of your home for different articles of clothing or different children’s clothes sizes. For example, your living room might be the location for all clothes for newborns, while the bedroom might have clothes for toddlers.
Set up different tables clearly labeled with sizes or type of clothing to help your guests “organize” when they arrive.
Mirrors, racks and hangers are helpful but not required

Hope this is helpful.
And sidebar: it was refreshing to see Tia Mowry Hardrict  and Tamera Mowry-Housley balk at a pricey bottle of olive oil in that episode earlier and second guess a decision to pay $80 for some flimsy resort wear an episode before when they went to the Bahamas. So many times on reality TV shows, we have women, who may not necessarily be independently wealthy, make so many outlandish shopping purchases flagrantly and without any regard to the final price. You’ll see the camera zoom in to a total that is 500th times what an average family would pay or even earn in a month. Many times, they can’t really even afford the crap but do it for the cameras and show. It’s so great that Tia and Tamera don’t buy into that and reveal that even though they may earn more as actresses, they watch their pennies and wallets and refuse to succumb to extravagant spending. It’s a great lesson and good to see. The truly wealthy people on this earth do not spend extraneously as “new money” people do and that is the reason they remain wealthy. Okay. Off my soap box now! 🙂
