2 things to do before you tell your boss you’re pregnant

For many women, especially those who work in high pressure, productivity-related jobs, telling their boss and department heads they are pregnant can be stressful.  It doesn’t have to be if you prepare. American Pregnancy put up a great post sharing excellent tips on how to prepare to do just that. Of the tips that stood out, as an attorney, I highly endorse the following two:

1. Read your company’s maternity leave policy in their handbook and do some online research as well to get to know your state’s laws concerning pregnancy, maternity leave, and pay for when you’re on leave.

2. Put a plan into place that you can present to your boss. Think of who can cover on short notice if nausea sets in unexpectedly or you need to schedule a doctor’s visit during lunch.

Also, as the post notes, you don’t have to wait until you are 12 weeks to make  your announcement, but since your chances of miscarrying reduce by 80% by then, it would be a good time to wait until you are at least that far along.  Certainly, you are free to wait longer but you may start to show at 20 weeks and you want to make sure you give your job adequate time to plan for your maternity leave and departure.
I know that some women elect to put it off as long as possible because they fear they will lose out on plum projects and opportunities if their office realizes they will be away from the job in the coming months. It’s a fragile thing, but planning is the best remedy to alleviate some of that anxiety.
Once an employer realizes you know your rights, they may be less likely to do something stupid like try to fire you or take away key responsibilities that you can handle perfectly fine until you deliver!

Mini-Me Versions of 2014 Grammy Awards Red Carpet

Little and Real Lupita Nyong’o
Albeit belated, we wanted to share New York photographer Tricia Messeroux‘s recreations of the red carpet looks from this year’s Grammy Awards for those of you who might not have seen them already!
Messeroux and her team do an excellent job to quickly put out a casting call for children who resemble the stars who walked the red carpet at high profile celebrity events and awards shows just days before. Afterwards, she outfights the tiny child-sized versions of the stars in miniature versions of the gowns, tuxes and clothing as the celebs. She gets the looks right, down to the accessories and their rock star antics!
Sometimes, the mini-me versions look even more fab than the star they are dressed up to resemble! Yeah. We said it.
Enjoy!

Your Baby’s Milestones from 6 months to 5 years (INFOGRAPHIC)

Most scientists and child development experts agree that 90% of your child’s brain capacity develops before he or she reaches age 5!
By age three, a child’s brain has formed 3 quadrillion connections. Wowza!
An average 3-year old has a vocabulary of 900 words which amounts to a three time increase from when he was 2. Imagine that a 4-year old’s brain is twice as active as an adult’s.
This means you new parents have to not rest on your laurels and do your part to not waste all that good active brain capacity.
Here is an infographic that breaks down your little rocket scientist’ noggin some more so you can determine if he’s on target with his age, although all children develop at varying pace and levels.

Melissa Harris-Perry revealed she used surrogate to deliver her baby

MSNBC Host Melissa Harris-Perry opened up on a blog post yesterday to share that she welcomed her new daughter via gestational pregnancy.
She and her husband James Perry used a gestational carrier to deliver a baby that is genetically theirs.
“The birth of every child is miraculous,” she wrote. “This little girl is no exception.”
The 40-year old host of a self-titled political talk show that uses the hashtag Nerdland  in social media for its program disclosed that at age 28, she had an uneventful pregnancy and delivered a daughter from a previous relationship. But then she developed fibroids and after years of battling them, eventually had to have a hysterectomy.
“I spent years suffering from the agony of uterine fibroids,” Perry stated. “Finally, in 2008, after fighting back with an arsenal of homeopathic and medical weapons, I decided to have my uterus removed. I wept for the children I would never have and made peace with the idea that one is enough.”
That left her unable to conceive with the man she later married…until she learned of a friend conceiving through a gestational surrogate and got convinced to give it a try.
“I read everything I could find, consulted everyone I could, and prayed a lot. In 2012, James and I began our journey with enormous faith and more than a little trepidation,” she wrote while noting that  one of every 100 babies born in the United States was conceived via fertility assistance. “Because I had retained my ovaries, we were able to create our own biological embryos. In Vitro Fertilization was a physically taxing and emotionally brutal process. But for many people, it has changed their lives.”

Indeed Perry and her husband welcomed their daughter on Valentine’s day.

When life doesn’t go according to plan, you pluck a couple of lemons off of a tree and make a whisky sour! Boom!

Review: Get in Pre-Pregnancy Shape and a Dancer’s Body with Ballet Body DVD series

As most people know, the abdominal area is the area of a woman’s body that is THE hardest to return to pre-pregnancy shape. A lot of women suffer from a condition called distastes recti when pregnant which involves a separation of the two segments of the abdominal muscle area as the uterus grows.

Ideally, the abdomnial wall would stay intact and the uterus would grow behind it. Women who have this effect have an even tougher time at getting their tummy back in tip top shape.

I had it and each time I was pregnant I was I could always rely on Pilates to help me get my body back into shape to counter the effects of this condition. Pilates and Ballet are great because they are low-impact yet focus on strengthening one’s core, which includes the abdominal muscles.
I swear by these exercise formats to  help develop a strong core area, to tone the total body, but especially to help shape and tighten the hips, buttocks and arms (aka the problem areas).

After getting the okay from their doctors, new moms should make sure they include cardio in their post-pregnancy routine, but they should also definitely include strength and core conditioning. They are a must.

This winter, I was offered to test out the Ballet Body series: The Ballet Body Lower Body ($16.99); Ballet Body Upper Body ($16.99); and Ballet Body Core ($16.99) DVD, which is distributed by Acacia Media group, which sells other popular exercise DVDs.
Oh my! The bomb! Do people still use that term? Amazon.com Widgets
I must say the exercises are rigorous though fitness professional Leah Sarago who designed and stars in each DVD shows viewers plenty of adjustments for their skill level: beginner or intermediate. I could ascertain from going through each of the 40-55 minute DVD in the series that they were well planned and designed to work and tone every muscle in the body. The Ballet Body series is a perfect blend of core and other exercises for the serious woman looking to get fit and toned this summer.
I have reviewed several different exercise DVDs and programs from dozens of instructors over that past decade, starting from those that came on VHS tapes, and I do believe that Sarago’s is among the top and best in this genre.
If you stick to it, combine it with a healthy eating regimen, and actually do the DVDs  periodically for a continuous period of time, you are almost guaranteed to see weight melt off, and inches disappear, with muscle replacing fat.

Buy the DVDs or series on Sarago’s website where you can also get digital downloads in lieu of a DVD.

If you do decide to test it out based on my recommendation, I am eager to learn how it works out for you and would appreciate getting a line back at JJ (at) bellyitchblog.com!
Good luck, new moms! Get that body in shape!

6 Steps for getting better cooperation from your child

Many parents know that irrespective of what you tell your children about cooperating with you when you are in public, at an outing or extended times away, they will inevitably break down and not listen. But there are things we can do to prepare for it to avoid tantrums and breakdowns that GoNannies recently shared and asked us to pass along.

1. When possible, help her envision your day by communicating it with her either that morning or the night before.  Younger children will need this to be repeated, so it can help to recap it a few times.  It is true that plans might change, but changes will be easier if she knew what the plan was in the first place.
2. Give warnings when time is coming close for transitions to take place.  Children tend to live entirely in the present, so they are usually completely engrossed in the activity they are involved in at any given moment.  This is obvious for younger children, but is also true of older children.  By giving your child warnings when you need to leave in 10 minutes, your child can begin to finish with what she has started.  Timers can be a big help for these warnings for both you and your child.  A timer can not only keep you on track to follow through with the time you allotted, but will also give your child an auditory clue to listen for.

3. Provide your child with choices so that she feels in control of the situation to some degree. It is very difficult for your child to be at the mercy of the adults in her life.  Often times, the errands or activities she is being forced to participate in are not activities she would choose to do. You can ease this frustration by making small parts of the day her choice.  Small children do well with two or three choices.  “Do you want to wear the blue boots, the red shoes or the purple clogs?”  Older children can help you decide where you will go first or what music you will listen to along the way. Simple choices can make the difference between a cranky child who drags her feet and a cooperative child who does what is asked of her.  Giving teens the choice can relieve some of the pressure too.  “The garbage needs to go out before 6AM tomorrow.  Do you want to do it before you go to bed or early in the morning” You may know the most common sense option is to do it now and get it over with. But giving your child the option can ease the tension often felt by parents and teens.
4. Create excitement for the thing you are trying to get your child to cooperate in doing.  You might be so caught up in completing your to-do list that you forget to enjoy the process.  You are motivated to get the tasks complete because you can see the outcome.  Your child could not care less about that outcome, she just wants to have fun.  So if you want her to cooperate with you, you will need to bring a little fun to the to-do list.  If you are running errands, build a little fun break into every other stop.  If you are in the car for a long time, find some games to play, such as I-Spy or 20 questions. Help keep her mind going and you will find she is much more compliant.
5. Make sure all her physical needs are met before asking her to do something you know she will be resistant about. Is your child hungry, thirsty, tired, overstimulated, cold/hot or sick?  It is hard for adults to operate when they have these needs.  Your child will be understandably cranky when she needs food or has simply had too much.  Take a break and don’t expect your child to do too much.
6. Make sure your child has enough time for play in her day.  Parents today have a tendency to overschedule their children, filling their time with sports, art and other activities.  The thought is that an active mind is a healthy mind.  To a degree, this is true.  However, if the mind of a child is not given the opportunity to think creatively and freely, it will begin to shut down.  This is when children become easily agitated, inflexible and unsatisfied.  To ensure that you have a more cooperative and helpful child, make sure that your child is given enough time for free play both with you and by herself.
Parents dream of a child who gets her shoes on the first time they ask or takes the garbage out when it needs to go out.  Though it may not be possible for your child to do this with 100% accuracy, it is possible to improve her cooperation level.
Good Luck!

“More feet!” Mom delivers surprise quadruplets day before 42nd birthday

MailOnline
A Mississippi woman delivered surprise quadruplets this month!
What? How?!
It turns out Kimberly Fugate was expecting identical triplet girls.

The mom to a 10-year old discovered the news of the triplets this past November 13th.  When the then 41-year old mom went into labor at  the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), she delivered three healthy babies as expected, a day before her 42nd birthday on February 8.

Then her doctor looked at her and said, “More feet!”
She then delivered a fourth baby girl, surprising Fugate, her husband and her doctor,  Dr. James Bofill, director of maternal-fetal medicine at UMMC, who said he was embarrassed for missing the 4th baby in a first of his 27-year career.
“No one really knows what makes a single zygote separate into identical twins or identical triplets, or in this case, identical quadruplets,”  Bofill told The Clarion Ledger. “It’s definitely an accident; it’s not supposed to happen and, in some cases, like Ms. Fugate’s, it happens in a spectacular manner.”
The baby girls – Kenleigh, Kristen, Kaleigh and Kelsey – were born premature at 28 weeks and will remain in the hospital until May.

NYFW Recap: Remixing Spring 2014 Trends Maternity Style

Costello Tagliapietra, Prabel Gurung, BCBG Max Azria, Rachel Zoe
During this past week’s Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, fashionistas who are preggers might have peeped some pretty cool trends they’d love to wear this Spring. Those stylish divas who are first to sport the latest trends may be wondering how they could pull it off while incubating a bun in the oven.
We usually recommend moms-to-be avoid trends and execute them in accessories, scarves, jewelry, belts, hats and other non clothing items, but this season, we saw some trends that are maternity friendly.
The collared shirt, pastels, wide leg pants and collarless coats and jackets, for example, are some of the trends we peeped on runway shows that could actually be converted into a maternity version.
Here are some pieces we curated for you to check out for inspiration, powered by Shopstyle!
Which would you do?
