Pregnancy, Birth Control Pills & Stroke linked

Taking birth control pills can influence a woman’s risk of stroke. So can migraines and menopause.

Even though women die of stroke at a greater rate than men – it’s their third leading cause of death, compared to men’s fifth – many aren’t aware they have a unique set of risk factors.

“If you are a woman, you share many of the same risk factors for stroke with men, but your risk is also influenced by hormones, reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth and other sex-related factors,” said Dr. Cheryl Bushnell, author of a new statement published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association.

The statement, issued Thursday by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, lays out for the first time a set of stroke prevention guidelines for doctors and their female patients.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are stroke risk factors for both women and men. But other risk factors including migraine with aura, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, depression and emotional stress are more common in women.

Friday Funnies: ABC’s “The Middle” is so relatable to all of our lives (VIDEOS)

It’s Friday!!!!!!!
This morning, my wonderful husband reminded me of how my frantic attempt to finish one of my kid’s projects I thought was due today while filling goody bags for another kid’s in class birthday party and making lunch and burning breakfast before resorting to the old standby, a Pop Tart,  reminded him of last week’s episode of ABC’s The Middle.

So after I cracked up for 5 minutes straight because it was SO TRUE, I said to myself I’d share with you a clip from that episode.  It is the one where the mom Frankie (Patricia Heaton Everybody Loves Raymond), in the comedy about the humorous everyday life of a a middle America family, joins a school drop off carpool but ends up having a tough time because she is always late, forgets Brick’s lunch and attempts to finish off his project right before the car pool pulls off! This is some Hilarious stuff.
Suburban moms and families can certainly relate to many of the funny scenes in each episode.
This show is THE BEST and reflects REAL LIFE and should be on the air forever. Like when it’s done and the stars have moved on, it should be in syndication for many more frantic families to reflect and relate to… um yeah!  I mean like how my baby sister was born during the last years of The Cosby Show yet, she became a fan of the show when she went to college via syndication. Like that. Long live The Middle.  woo!
Anyway, the clip and a few other select funny scenes to start your Friday off are below. Enjoy!

An episode that features Frankie going through her son’s book bag to discover a test and a test she never saw.. Then there is that “helping with homework” stress! I. Can. Relate!!

The Go Red website offers tips for managing stress:

Think ahead

Practicing effective time management is key to lessening stress in the workplace. Jacobs recommends starting projects far ahead of deadlines to guard against scrambling at the last second. Take note of how long tasks or projects take you to complete so you can best manage your own expectations and those of your colleagues. Avoid the stress of being late to meetings by setting your watch five to 10 minutes ahead.

Focus on one thing at a time

Instead of trying to deal with everything at once—answer emails, make calls, organize your desk, finish a report—focus on accomplishing one thing at a time. For example, answer emails for an allotted amount of time, then stop and focus on something else, like the report you need to finish. This helps minimize stress by allowing you to focus on the objective at hand instead of feeling scattered.

Take a break

“We all need to build in rest periods during the day,” Jacobs says. “Working through lunch is a terrible way of managing stress. Try taking 30 to 60 minutes to step away from your desk and decompress. You will come back with a sense of replenishment.”

Adjust your expectations

While it is important to challenge yourself at work, taking on more than you can handle can create a tremendous amount of stress.

“If you have no chance of meeting expectations in the workplace, it can cause feelings of demoralization,” Jacobs says. “Find ways to decrease the demands made upon your self, if that means being less self critical or having a frank conversation with your superior about adjusting your workload.”

Use emergency stress stoppers

Emergency stress stoppers help you deal with stress on the spot. These can be extremely effective in the work environment when you’ve got a lot on your plate, your mind is racing and the stress is mounting. You may need different stress stoppers for different situations and sometimes it helps to combine them.

  • Count to 10 before you speak.
  • Take three to five deep breaths.
  • Ask for time to handle a stressful situation, so you can accomplish it to your liking and on your terms.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Don’t be afraid to say, “I’m sorry,” if you make a mistake.

If you shop at Party City stores nationwide, from  February 2nd through March 1, 2014, it will collect $1, $3 and $5 donations from customers in stores with all proceeds raised to be donated to Go Red For Women.

Olivia Wilde, Ali Larter support Kristen Bell’s anti-paparazzi social media campaign

Last year, Jennifer Garner and Halle Berry took on the paparazzi and successfully lobbied and got a law passed that put harsher restrictions on photographers who take pics of celebrity children.
Since then, actress Kristen Bell and hubby Dax Shepard have joined the fight and are using social media and the hashtag #pedorazzi to encourage the news magazines and media outlets that purchase paparazzi photos to stop doing that. The two went on TODAY recently.
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
The hope is that if the market dries up, the photogs will quit snapping the kids.
It looks like current mom-to-be Olivia Wilde and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch mom Ali Larter are supporting the Shephards’ effort by retweeting Bell.

The Kardashians also put some work trying to get their millions of followers to support efforts challenging paparazzi target of celeb kids.

Good Luck!

Study: Couples with Fertility problems more likely to stay together if have baby, divorce if don’t

Couples who seek evaluation for infertility problems are more likely to stay together if they are ultimately able to have a child, a new Danish study suggests.
Researchers followed couples after they first sought assistance with fertility issues. Women who didn’t have a child over the next 12 years were up to three times more likely to get divorced or end the relationship compared to women who gave birth to a child during that follow-up period, the investigators found.
The study included more than 47,500 women in Denmark who were evaluated for infertility between 1990 and 2006. Among this group, 57 percent gave birth after fertility treatment.
The findings are published in the Jan. 29 online edition of the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, a journal of the Nordic Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“Our findings suggest that not having a child after fertility treatment may adversely affect the duration of a relationship for couples with fertility issues,” said study lead author Trille Kristina Kjaer, of the survivorship unit at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center in Copenhagen.
“Further investigations that account for marital quality and relational well-being of couples with fertility problems are now needed,” Kjaer noted in a journal news release.

Androgynous Maternity as rocked by Ciara, Beyonce & Kim Kardashian

When Ciara showed up to the 2014 MusicCares Gala in a navy Lanvin mens style pinstripe suit, many scrubbed their chins, cocked their heads and went, “hmmmm.”   Not all were convinced at how fashion forward the look was for maternity wear.

Little did they know she was only channeling the spirit of her fore-mothers who rocked Androgynous maternity before her.

Behold:

Ciara has been wearing androgynous looks this pregnancy like Beyonce & Kim Kardashian did before her.

Meanwhile, the first openly gay woman athlete to sign a Nike modeling contract, WNBA player Brittney Griner was signed to model men’s apparel.
And as an ESPN.com story about the deal noted:

Androgynous models are coveted in high-end fashion, but the trend toward gender-neutral clothing has only just begun to reach the sports world, with NBA stars Russell Westbrook and Dwyane Wade blurring the lines in their tight jeans and fitted sweaters. No sports apparel company has taken it a step further and expressly targeted the gender-fluid crowd — and whether Nike is willing to ride the edge with Griner remains to be seen. “We can’t get into specifics,” says Nike spokesman Brian Strong, “but it’s safe to say we jumped at the opportunity to work with her because she breaks the mold.

The former Baylor women’s player and current Phoenix Mercury star won the ESPY award for best female athlete in 2011 and rocked the red carpet in men’s wear the following two years.

The era of androgyny has been a thing for a while now, but is mos def an “in” thing again.

5 Ways to Keep your Kid from Catching a Cold

Staving off a cold in the height of cold and flu season is no easy task but our partners at becomeananny.com offer these five tips for trying to fight off the airborne germs’ attempt to infect your kid with a cold:

  1. Try to keep ahead of the germs.  Disinfecting wipes or a water and bleach solution can be used for this task.  Make sure that you are regularly cleaning door knobs, handles, cabinets, toys, and anything else that little hands might come into contact with.  For every gallon of water, 1 ½ teaspoons of bleach should be added to create a solution to disinfect surfaces and toys. For diapering and toileting areas, 1 tablespoon of bleach can be added to 1 gallon of water. Let the bleach solution sit for 2 minutes before wiping it down.  If you are worried about your child coming into contact with chemicals, look for all-natural sanitizing solutions.  You’ll also want to make sure that everyone in the house frequently washes their hands with warm water and soap.
  2. Change toothbrushes often.  Toothbrushes can harbor germs and re-infect your child if the germs are not killed.  Dentists recommend that toothbrushes be replaced every 3 months if you are healthy, more often if you are not.  Toothbrushes should also be replaced after an illness. To kill germs soak the toothbrush in antiseptic mouthwash for 5 minutes or run your toothbrush through the dishwasher.  Warning: Boiling your toothbrush or running it through the dishwasher will wear out the bristles faster.
  3. Feed your child a healthy diet.  If your child eats a proper diet it will strengthen his immune system and he will be better able to fight off cold-causing germs.  Make sure he eats plenty of fruits and vegetables, as these contain the proper vitamins and minerals needed to build up his body’s natural defenses.  Eating foods high in vitamins is better for absorption of those vitamins than taking vitamin tablets.
  4. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water.  Water not only keeps your body hydrated during the very dry winter season, but it helps your body flush out unwanted toxins.  Water also helps your lymph system run better, which is part of your body’s immune system, and it fights off illness.
  5. Make sure your child gets enough sleep.  Sleeping is extremely important, and most people don’t get enough of it.  Doctors recommend that children sleep 10-11 hours per night.  A lack of sleep can affect how well your child grows because the body produces a growth hormone during sleep.  Digestion also takes place during sleep.  Bodies need this down time to recover and rebuild after a busy day of being a kid.  By getting enough sleep the body is better prepared to fight off germs.
Good luck and stay healthy!

Heroin Chic Lives! Jaime King remembers Davide Sorrenti, heroin past, timely given Hoffman’s death (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

Controversial heroin-glorifying photo featuring Jaime King among famous dead drug addicted Rock icons

This is fitting in light of the heroin overdose death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman this weekend:

Yesterday, our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Jaime King shared an image on her Instagram page in tribute to the anniversary of the death of her ex-boyfriend, famed Italian fashion photographer Davide Sorrenti.

Davide Sorrenti and Jaime King  – source

“Because I could not stop for Death, he kindly stopped for me. In the Carriage held but just ourselves and Immortality.” –Emily Dickinson #DavideSorrenti #RestInPeace #SKE”  the actress and former model wrote in the revised caption.

In the original caption, however, the Hart of Dixie star used the hashtag #HeroinChic.

It is reference to a style of fashion photography and fashion industry styling that Sorrenti, who came from a family of talented photographers,  and a few other photographers of the late 1990s embraced and promoted as part of their stance of rejecting glossy & glamorous imagery promoted at the time. It was at the cusp of the grunge era.

Davide Sorrenti  source
They chose to instead to portray their reality and the darker elements of that world, which as we all know, often included drug abusing figures. One of Sorrenti’s most controversial photographs was of a strung out and super thin King, who had admitted to being a drug addict starting age 14. Around her in the photo for Hysteric Glamour were famous dead icons who were drug addicts: Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious, and Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead (see top).
The term “Heroin Chic” has outlived Sorrenti, who died at the tender age of just 20-years old. It is reference to a look during the 90s grunge era that the fashion industry adopted as a “trend.” It included dark penciled under eye, emaciated appearance, pale skin, all to resemble the appearance of a heroin addict.
Of course, the industry’s capitalizing and marketing the androgynous look of drug addiction and making it fashionable and cool caught the ire and outrage of many, leading magazines to apologize and pull entire spreads.
In 1997, US President Bill Clinton spoke out against  “heroin chic” in light of Sorrenti’s death and the industry responded by shifting gears.
But if you click the hashtag in Instagram, as we did after noticing it mentioned on King’s Instagram account, you can see clearly that the look lives on today and is remembered.
It is almost reminiscent of Thinspiration and ProAna websites and imagery that glorify anorexia, bulimia and rail thinness as a goal among young girls and women.
Polite society can condemn it all and attempt to quell its prevalence in the mainstream but in the background and underground, it moves around, thrives, finds new homes and fans and essentially lives on…..
