Trend: The Flip Phone makes a come-back

The flip phone is on the comeback.
Ever since Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Kate Beckinsale and our Bellyitch BumpWatch alum Scarlett Johansson were spotted chatting on flip phones this year, folks have been scrambling to follow suit and snatch up cute simple functional phones.
Whether these fashion icons made the switch out of fear of hackers, interest in just having a simple streamline device to just talk on, a small phone they can easily carry around or just interest in a simpler way, they’re still contributing to a new trend.
Would you get a flip phone?

The Best Online ‘Learn to Read’ Software ABC Mouse.com’s Cyber Monday Special

Because I just learned that ABC Mouse.com is having a 50%+ off sale for Cyber Monday, I’m resharing my review of the service for your your added edification and consideration.

——————–

I learned recently that a friend of a friend’s child, who is 10 years old, has never owned a book outside of books assigned to him at school.

This child has every digital gadget, tablet and video game at his disposal yet has never been given an actual book to read for leisure ever in his life. Hopefully, he has educational games and access learning sites as well, but it’s not the same.
The sad reality is there are many homes like his and the children in them may suffer schools and risk lagging behind their peer who do read and have access to books.

Reading, and chapter books, are the building blocks to reading comprehension, composition and sentence structure, and command of language, orally and in writing. Many standardized tests require students to master these subjects, not to mention some school entrance tests.

To combat this reality, more and more schools are turning to electronic forms of games and software to reach children the only way some know how.
My children’s school, for example, use a nationwide program called First in Math. It is a competitive game where each child logs on and completes educational games and tests for stickers. The administrators and teachers can monitor when a child logs on and how many stickers he has accumulated. In our school, the computer teacher gets swarmed as he goes to the bulletin board to post the latest results of top students in each grade. It is a healthy way of encouraging competition for learning.
It is also a wonderful example of how digital games can be used to supplement children’s learning when they may not have adequate resources or parental support at home.

They are also great for supplementing information and materials your child may be learning at school.

My 6-year old for example went thru the Starfall (free and paid) website instructions, and currently is going through the ABCMouse.com program which costs about $7.95 monthly. It is totally worth it in my book because combined with some other video-based learning tools, that program helped her learn to read when she was 4-years old.

She does 2nd grade math and she is only in Kindergarten and her oral communication and vocabulary are tops, partially because of it. It helps that her school also has the software embedded in each Kindergarten class so she is very comfortable with it and gets a chance to get even further in the lessons daily.

It has over 2,000 Learning Activities for 2-6 year olds. I love the fact that she gets to pick an avatar that has her skin color and hair type. When she completes a lesson, she gets to pick an electronic prize from play money she accumulates at each level.
Again, its the element of incorporating games fun with learning that makes it great! I purchased it after seeing a pop-up ad for it several years ago and renew each time!
Check it out and use our Bellyitch  link to get the first month FREE!
Good luck and do let us know how it’s working for your little one!

International Bump Watch: Pakistani actress Sarwat Gilani Pakistan Fashion Week bump

“Bump Watching” isn’t a uniquely American phenomenon.

This weekend all eyes were on model-turned-actress Sarwat Gilani during Pakistan Fashion Week who appeared on stage at the Toni & Guy “Hair Meets Fashion” show sporting a visible bump in a shimmering sequined mini sheath dress and black shawl.
Gilani, who has starred in a string of Pakistani TV dramas and her actor husband of just three months Fahad Mirza are expecting their first child together.
Mirza said she will not let the pregnancy derail her career.
We blogged a bit in the past how Bollywood actress and former Time magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman in the World  Aishwarya Rai Bachachan‘s pregnancy led a lot of film producers to talk about inserting a no-pregnancy clause in casting contracts with female actors.
“I will continue working after having a baby,” Gilani told Dawn.com .“The world doesn’t stop when you become a mother.”
Good for you, mama! Congrats!

Small Business Saturday: Search your local small biz HERE

Today is Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to promoting small businesses, mom and pop stores and other small entrepreneurs.
Small business fuel the economy as there are more of them than larger businesses.
For example, in Maryland, independent grocers generate $2.27B in annual sales and are responsible for over 20,000 jobs and wages $872.75 million.  That fuels $218M in state and local budget, and almost $200M in federal resources.

Given all the contentious dialogue going on these days around immigrants, it’s also a great time to highlight all the ways immigrants in America, including small business owners, also contribute to the economy.  One out of every 10 American workers is employed by an immigrant-owned business, and these firms contribute over $775 billion to the American economy, each year.

Today, make sure you support a local small business.

Use this tool to find a participating small business near you HERE!

Tila Tequila: From Sex Kitten to Breastfeeding advocate

Tila Tequila, best known for her racy online personality and starring in a bi-sexual dating show on MTV has a new baby (born Nov 17), a new outlook on life and is the newest celeb breastfeeding advocate.
The Singaporean-born American model starred in MTV’s  A Shot of Love with Tila Tequila for two seasons beginning in 2007 and before was known for her sexy appearances in men’s magazines and as a famous MySpace online personality. After falling pregnant this year, Tequila, real name Tila Nguyen, took a hiatus from social media, got sober and refocused her life and priorities.
She launched her blog this summer which she has also used to document her first pregnancy.
Nguyen hasn’t revealed who her child’s father is but said she thinks it will be easier to raise her brand new gorgeous daughter Isabella Monroe Nguyen on her own than raising a boy.  Good thing because during the pregnancy before finding out the gender she had said she was hoping to have a baby boy.
“Since I will be raising her alone I think it’s just perfect that I’m having a girl for my first child instead of a boy because this way it will probably be easier on me.” Nguyen said  “I had to disappear for a while to get my act together and enjoy my newfound happiness with sober living!”
Along the way, she also managed to become the newest celebrity breastfeeding advocate, blogging about it several times to her blog of several million followers.
This week, she also posted a photo on her rebranded Instagram, Baby Mama Tila, of her daughter right after nursing and blogged about the value and importance of breastfeeding for bonding with baby and passing on nutrients. Good job!
 “I am so lucky to be able to wake up seeing,and kissing on this beautiful little face of hers every single day! The world could end right now, and as long as I have her held close to my chest and feel her little heart beating…. nothing else in this world matters!” said Nguyen who has rebranded her image post baby.”The only thing that matters to me is my little princess and what a beautiful, gorgeous, and perfect little princess she is! I seriously am so in love!”
Congrats and Godspeed!

Carrie Underwood switches from veganism to vegetarianism during pregnancy

Carrie Underwood is following in the footsteps of past vegan celebrities who became pregnant Natalie Portman and  Alyson Hannigan.

Like them, Underwood has adjusted her diet and became vegetarian presumably to ensure the baby she’s incubating is adequately developed and not hindered by her diet choice.
Hannigan actually started eating cheese and meat temporarily while pregnant, Celebrity Baby Scoop reports.
And Underwood, a former American Idol winner & multi-award winning singer said she plans to go back to veganism after baby arrives.
“With pregnancy, I am definitely going more on the vegetarian side, but as soon as I am not pregnant anymore I will go back to being vegan,” Underwood has said.  “I don’t think I am craving anything too crazy. I try to keep it as healthy as possible and try to take care of myself.”

Alicia Silverstone and Emily Deschanel famously stuck with their veganism thru their respective first pregnancies and both delivered healthy babies. To each its own. Your thoughts? Do you think it was wise for Underwood to switch to vegetatianism from veganism while pregnant?

Black Friday: How to Dress for Shoppping Guide

 If you’ve been out since early this morning, or hitting the stores later today or this weekend, you want to stay comfy, especially if you are also preggers. To look stylish and chic while scoping out the deals, you want to layer a tank, a jersey shirt or others as an alternative to wearing a thick sweater. As you go from store to store in an outdoor market type shopping area or mall hop, you’ll be in varying levels of being overheated or too cold. Layers are more breathable and can be unpeeled and peeled back on all day.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Also, scarves can keep you warm and can double as a pashmina like cover up. They have the dual purpose of looking stylish and functional as serving as supporting your layered look for staying comfortable and arm.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

If you have a fave jeans, go with that because they are durable and functional while still chic and fashionable. A great pair never goes out of style. Also, they work for various climates. If you’re in the balmy west coast of the States, or the brisk bulstery pre-winter east coast, jeans  are versatile.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

To endure long treks through malls and while combing through racks, go with comfy shoes like ballet flats or low heeled boots. Both are functional and stylish options to pair with your shopping look.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Finally, a great tote or saddle bag completes the look. The saddle bag is best because it keeps your hands free as you add more bags throughout the day and can be worn safely and comfortably at your side the front. A big tote also can be worn on the shoulder and are also good for freeing the hands.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Good luck and happy shopping!
