10 endearing ways to show your child love

It seems like these days everyone is always rushing around, working late, and struggling to cross things off a to-do list. Not surprisingly, this go-go-go mindset makes it’s hard for parents to meaningfully connect with their children.  One way parents can nurture this relationship with their children is to express love in tangible ways.  If you’re looking to foster connection and demonstrate love, consider implementing these 10 things into your day. [And so from our friends at Babysitting.net:]
  1.     Give her random hugs.  Showing affection to your child is one way to connect with her on a physical level.  Kids need a soft place to fall, and knowing that that place is with you will go a long way to make your relationship a close one. Dole out hugs often. Doing so can lead to a healthier and more emotionally well balanced child according to Dacher Keltner, a professor of Psychology at Berkley.
  2.     Put notes in her lunch.  When she is young, having a smiley face or some other sticker in her lunch is a fun surprise to find.  Once she gets older and is able to read, you can send along notes of encouragement for an upcoming test or audition.  Notes are an easy way to let her know that you are thinking about her.
  3.     Surprise her with a small gift.  There’s something about being surprised with a small gift that makes the occasion special.  Gifts on holidays or birthdays might be expected, but a gift just because it’s Tuesday is a fun way to say, “I love you.”
  4.     Bring her a balloon, just because.  Balloons are so bright and fun that they always bring a smile to a child’s face.  Little things that you can do to brighten her day will show her that you love her.
  5.     Leave her notes on the mirror.  The mirror is a good place to leave notes for a couple of reasons.  The first reason is that everyone starts their day in the bathroom and will likely see the note which will create a good start to their day.  Secondly, as kids get older they stand and look at themselves in the mirror and are often critical.  Leaving notes that tell her how beautiful her eyes are or what shiny long hair she has will remind her of her assets instead of letting her focus on her flaws.  Being told nice things first thing in the morning will definitely let them know they are loved.  This is a good idea for working parents that may not see their child before they are off to school.
  6.     Fix her favorite meal. Putting forth the extra effort to make her favorite meal will let her know that you care about her and that she is loved.  Celebrate the little things like a lost tooth or winning student of the month.
  7.     Bake her favorite cookies for an after school snack.  Most kids will grab a snack right after school.  Many times it will be something like fruit or some chips, nothing special.  On a day when it’s rainy or when you know she’s been down, it’s a loving gesture to make her favorite cookies for a snack.  Comfort food isn’t called “comfort food” for nothing.
  8.     Take her for a special date night.  Create a date night just for the two of you.  Take her to the salon for a pedicure or to see a ballgame.  Spending one-on-one time with her will give her time to share with you and for you to let her know how much you care about her.
  9.     Tuck her into bed and sing her a lullaby.  Yelling good night as she heads off to bed by herself isn’t as loving as walking with her to her room and taking the time to tuck her in and sing her a lullaby.  Older kids may think that they want to be grown up, but especially in those tween years when they are caught between wanting to be a teen and wanting to still be your baby, tucking them in will be appreciated.
  10.     Cuddle up with her to watch TV. Put in a movie, pop some popcorn and cuddle up on the couch to watch some TV.  Doing so can serve as a time to relax and reconnect with each other.  Special times like this will strengthen your bond and remind her how much she is loved.

2014 Soul Train Music Awards Weekend: Celeb Mamas (Photos)

This weekend was the 2014 Soul Train Centric Awards Weekend at the Orleans Arena Stage in Las Vegas, Nevada.
We spotted several Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums at various pre, show and post-show events.  Tamar Braxton Herbert stopped by the pre-event gifting suite and graced the style stage and sang her hit song. She had various outfit changes through  the night.
New mom Lil Kim walked the red carpet and rocked the stage.

Erica Campbell of Mary Mary looked fab on the red carpet as did actress, ex-boxer Laila Ali
Yesterday, November 8th Tisha Campbell-Martin accepted an award during the Centric Comedy event which also featured Bellyitch 2nd time dad-to-be Donald Faison.

The show was pre-taped and will air on Centric on November 30, 2014.

Check out some of the pics from the weekend.

Bonus. Not a bumpwatch alum but an international soca star from my husband’s native Trinidad and Tobago, Machel Montano, won for Best International Performance.

5 websites to help your college-bound kid find the right school

Even though school has just really started, it’s never too early for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to start doing research on the close to 4,700 colleges and universities out there.
Thank goodness for technology to help.
While there is no “one size fits all” search tool for college, here are the top five websites that can help you – and your kids – plan and prepare to make a good college impression and decision.
Admittedly Every family preparing to send their child to college deserves access to the same college prep tools usually reserved for the top-paying clientele. Admittedly has it.
It was founded by a former director of an elite test-prep company and Admittedly is the ultimate, free college advisory platform that uses OKCupid-like algorithms to match students to their ideal schools. It also includes an innovative college prep curriculum to help perfect the college application to land a dream school.
LinkedIn– LinkedIn has recently launched its “University Finder,” which identifies which colleges are popular with which companies. It pulls data from its 313 million profiles to find out which schools and degrees translate into jobs at certain companies.
Parchment.com Parchment.com, a company that provides an electronic transcript exchange for students, can also help predict chances of getting admitted into a certain school. Students that agree to share information from their transcript with the site including grades, which colleges they were accepted and where they chose to attend, is used to predict another students chances of getting in to a certain school. Additionally the site suggests other school options and has information about whether most students preferred one college over another.
StatFuse StatFuse provides students with instant results showing them their chances of admission to colleges across the nation based entirely on data released by 1,200 popular universities. Factors include average grades and test scores of student accepted.
Noodle’s College Report Card  is a tool that allows college applicants to compare schools based on metrics that include, educational quality, outcomes, environment, influence, and selectivity.
Good luck!

Veteran’s Day: ALL US National Parks are FREE

This Veterans’ Day, many schools and the federal government are closed. The US National Park Service is waiving entrance for everyone to commemorate the service of U.S. Armed Forces veterans.
“From frontier forts to battlefields and memorials, there are almost 100 national park sites with direct connections to the military,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “We are committed to telling the story of our veterans. We must never forget their valor and their service to our country.”
Many parks will also hold special events. Hear the story of America’s first top guns at Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama.  Visit the historic Nike Hercules Missile base – a remnant of the Cold War – in Everglades National Park. Witness an enlistment during a commemoration at Valley Forge. Tour Mammoth Cave and learn about its role in the War of 1812.
Find more information about these and other events at www.nps.gov/findapark/military-honor.htm.
If you live near a park and are thinking of something to do while the kids are off, consider taking a trek to your nearest one.

Editor’s Weekend Shopping Fashion Picks

The temperature is dipping and it’s time to pull out the sweaters and booties out of storage, and to start layering.
Here are my top 5 picks for this weekend for those of you who may be supplementing their late fall wardrobes. J Brand Jeans skinny maternity are great for a casual weekend look. Everyone should be into warm comfortable sweaters and you cant go wrong with H&M‘s scoop neck sweater.
Splurge on a fab bag that you can go everywhere with and which will also be an eye-catching statement accessory. Proenza Schouler makes great saddle bags which are wonderful for keeping your hands free as you are out and about. Because leopard skin print endures, opt with booties in that design from Joie to give a monochromatic look some pop!
Finally, whether you’re working out or just running errands, Gap’s sweatshirt in a dark color is a good bet!

‘Snooki and JWoww’ new season is all about the girls’ respective pregnancy

Former Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and her bestie Jennifer “JWoww” Farley have done a 180 on the fourth season of their MTV hit show  Snooki & JWoww.
At the beginning of the season which debuted this past November 5th, Farley is nine months pregnant and Polizzi is three months along. So the season is about the girls trying to still be their fun and crazy selves whilst carrying their respective bundle  of joy!
As we know, since taping, olizzi has given birth to her second child, daughter Giovanna Marie LaValle and Farley welcomed her first Meilani Alexandra Matthews
What a far cry from their days on The Jersey Shore. And I am so old, I remember waaaaaay back when I was a young MTV regular viewer and the Jersey Shore was just a short short 2-4 episode docu-series about a group of kids on their summer break.
I could not imagine back then, it would have become such a hit reality TV show and would have spawned such mega reality TV stars, all who have matured quite a bit before our eyes.
Anway, check out Zap2it’s interview with the two where they dish about being pregnant together.

Study: School lunches are healthier than home packed lunches

A new study found that school-provided lunches are more nutritious than those brought from home.
Comparing over 750 school meals with more than 560 packed lunches given to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students in 3 schools over the course of 5 days,  Virginia Tech researchers found that the home lunches were less healthy, specifically:
  • School lunches have on average 512 calories while packed lunches had 608;
  • School lunches included 26 grams of protein compared to just 18 in packed lunches;
  • Packed lunches were less likely to have fruits, vegetables, sugar-free juice and milk;
  • Packed lunches had more snacks such as chips and crackers; and
  • Packed lunches had more fat, and included more desserts and sugary drinks than the school lunches.
“There was a spectrum,” Alisha Farris, a Ph.D candidate at Virginia Tech and lead researcher said. “There were some really healthy packed lunches. But overall, they were pretty unhealthy.”
The study is published in the November-December issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
Of the 50 million children in US public schools, close to 60% of students eat school lunch while about 40% bring their lunch.
Well…I guess First Lady Michelle Obama could gloat about this one given her platform during her husband’s two terms has been mainly promoting healthier school lunches and she has pushed to make them even more healthier.
