Remembering Oscar de la Renta: Biography

The fashion world mourns the loss of veteran fashion designer Oscar de la Renta who passed away at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer.
Every American First Lady from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama has worn his designs and he had won every fashion award around; been honored by many philanthropic organizations and given many honorary degrees; and served on several charitable organizations’ boards.
Working right through the end, de la Renta had an eye for women’s fashion.
It figures, he was born Oscar Aristides Ortiz Renta Fiallo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the only boy in a family of 7 children.
He started his fashion career as a student in Madrid selling his fashion illustrations to earn money.

The then-young upstart eventually landed a plum job working for Cristobal Balenciaga in Madrid.
“I just learned by looking and observing. He was like God to me. ” Oscar de la Renta has said of Cristobal Balenciaga.

He then moved on to work as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo, before getting a job designing for Elizabeth Arden in Manhattan, New York in America in 1963.
When Arden was reluctant to work with Oscar’s vision to create more ready-to-wear women’s clothing, he departed in 1965 to work for Jane Darby and eventually took over her label after Darby’s death.
“Everything Oscar does is feminine, romantic and appropriate. He’s not out there trying to be revolutionary, he just wants his clothes to be extremely attractive, and appropriate without being ‘old.’  If you look through his collection, he has a signature:  ‘Beautiful Clothes.'”  Anna Wintour, editor and chief of Vogue, has said of de la Renta.
He has stayed true to his aesthetic by refusing to sell out his line and keeping the company in the family.
His son-in-law Alex Bolen currently operates as Chief Executive Officer, and his step-daughter Eliza Bolen serves as Vice President of Licensing, at Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Up until succumbing to cancer, he maintained control over his brand and because of that ensured the consistent quality and vision of his clothing.
He has dressed many of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms-to-be and alums including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tina Fey, Jessica Alba and currently expecting stars Blake Lively and Rahcel Bilson.
Rest in Peace, Oscar.
Godspeed. Thank you for your talent and art. Your vision will live in on in fashion history.

7 Ways to Save on Halloween Candy, Costumes and Fun

Halloween is now reported to be the send most expensive holiday of the year! Even though we don’t exchange expensive gifts on Halloween, it is easy to rack up big bills on costumes and candy. The good news is that there are many easy ways to save money on Halloween expenses without compromising on the fun.
Stephanie Nelson of www.CouponMom.com offers these 7 tips on how Halloween costumes, candy and fun:
1. Be creative. It can cost $35 to $50 for many popular children’s costumes at party stores, which adds up quickly if you have more than one child. With a little creativity, you and your children can make easy costumes with items you have around the house. You can also shop at a local thrift store to buy vintage clothing to use as costumes.
2. Research ideas on-line. My favorite costume idea resource is FamilyFun.com, which lists 100 easy and inexpensive costumes you can create at home — whether you have a few hours or only a few minutes to put an outfit together.
3. Don’t overbuy. If you live in a neighborhood, you will most likely be buying candy to give out on Halloween night. The challenge is to avoid overbuying — who wants bags of leftover candy when the kids come home with far more than they need?  If you are nervous your stash won’t last, consider buying Hershey’s Kisses or similar chocolate candy that you can use later for holiday baking.
4. Look for coupons. You can also save money on candy and costumes by watching for store sales and coupons in the Sunday coupon circulars or in your mailbox. Find coupons in the Sunday newspaper ads throughout October.
5. Carve a pumpkin. The easiest decoration that is also fun for kids is carving a pumpkin together. For just a few dollars, you can create a memorable annual tradition with your child and decorate your front porch or window at the same time. Save the seeds and find a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds, as well.
6. Get crafty. You can find plenty of inexpensive Halloween decorating projects from books in the library, local family magazines distributed free at libraries and schools.  Easier projects include making ghosts to hang in the window made out of string, glue and waxed paper. Doing a project with your children will be much less expensive and far more memorable than shelling out $100 for decorations at the local party store.
7. Save on admission. This is the time of year for pumpkin festivals, Halloween fairs, hayrides, haunted house tours and more. Many schools and churches offer free festivals and fairs as family-friendly alternatives on Halloween.Prices for these family events vary widely, from free to as much as $20 a head. Check the local event websites or the calendar section in community newspapers and magazines to find inexpensive events.
Be on the lookout for admission coupons in your local paper and check the web sites of Festival sponsoring organizations to find printable coupons for reduced admissions.  Your local grocery store may sell discounted tickets for these events either on their Web site or at their customer service counter in the store.

Holidays Overeating Season Starts Soon: 5 Ways to prepare your Tummy to Handle it

Traditionally, Halloween starts the three month seasons of excess eating candy, large family meals, sweets and treats.

All of this excessive eating can wreak havoc on your digestive system, and leave you with an unpleasant, upset stomach.

You don’t have to wait until you need antacid, instead there are things you can change about your diet and lifestyle to stave off the need for medicine.

Michele McRae, Certified Nutrition at Rainbow Light offers her tips to help you naturally soothe digestion and make your holiday meal – and the recovery – a much better experience.

1. Hit the veggies: Reach for the fiber-rich appetizers and food. They will help you feel full and absorb excess liquid in your body. Fiber also normalizes the rate at which food moves through the digestive tract.

Fresh veggies, fruit platters and salsa are healthy choices that will help you feel full and make you less likely to overindulge on complex carbs and fatty foods that are often difficult to digest.

2. Drink water: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water each day. The dry air and being indoors can dehydrate your system, as can alcoholic beverages. While at a party, alternate alcohol with water to cut calories and keep your digestive system hydrated.

3. Don’t skip a meal to “save calories”: Rather than skipping lunch, choose a healthy salad with low-fat dressing. The added fiber will help keep you regular and you will be less likely to overindulge later.

4. Get some exercise: Exercise can help you manage the stress of the season and keep your digestion system active. So have a snowball fight, go sledding, and join in any dance off at the party!

5. Take Digestive Enzymes: If your stomach is still out of sorts, not to worry! Try a digestive enzyme supplement to help ease you through the holiday season. Here’s one to try: Rainbow Light Nutritional System’s Advanced Enzyme Optima.

Report: Stevie Wonder is expecting triplets with 25-year old fiance after secret baby last year

Tabloid reports state that veteran singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder, 64, is expecting triplets with his fiance Tomeeka Robyn Bracy, 25.

The couple had a baby last year according to sources to The Enquirer which broke the story.

The source says she was at the baby shower for the first kid that has never been publicly mentioned before.

It is said that although this second pregnancy was not planned, Wonder, real name Stevland Hardaway Morris,  is thrilled to be a father again and to be in their lives considering his career didn’t allow him to be an active dad to his other 7 children.

He has two children with ex-wife Kai Millard Morris, whom he divorced two years ago: 13-year old Kailand Morris and 9-year old Mandla Morris.

He had his first three children, Aisha Morris, Keita Morris and Kwame Morris with an ex secretary turned girlfriend Yolanda Simmons. His 4th and 5th children Mumtaz Morris and Sophia Morris were with ex girlfriend Melody McCulley.
If the rumor is true, these three children will make that 11 offsprings to the multi-platinum, multiple-award winner.

Judge’s denial of a delay request forces lawyer to bring newborn to hearing

By the time an Atlanta Immigration attorney’s clients could afford to hire her, she was very pregnant and about to have a baby.

After discovering her first court appearance on the calendar was 4 weeks into her maternity leave,  Stacy Ehrisman-Mickle lfiled a request to have the hearing delayed but Immigration Judge J. Dan Pelletier denied the request.

“No good cause. Hearing date set prior to counsel accepting representation,”  the order denying the request stated.

Ehrisman-Mickle said she expected the request to be approved and only discovered it wasn’t the Friday before the hearing during a time her truck-driver husband was on the road.

“I was in a state of panic,” Ehrisman-Mickle  told The Associated Press on Thursday. ” I didn’t know what to do with my baby,”

With no family in the area and her infant daughter too young for daycare, Ehrisman-Mickle got clearance from her newborn’s pediatrician to take the baby to the hearing so long as she wore the baby in a front facing carrier and didn’t let anyone touch her.

During the October 7th hearing, the baby cried leading Judge Pelletier reprimanded the mom for inappropriate behavior and comment that her pediatrician would be shocked that she was exposed to all the germs in the court.

“I was embarrassed. I felt humiliated,” she Ehrisman-Mickle said.

Pelletier eventually delayed the hearing.

What a mess, huh? Insensitive is the polite word for that judge. Ehrisman-Mickle filed a complaint about the judge following the hearing. No word yet on its progress.
