Shield your bump like Carrie Underwood in a peplum waist top

If you want to playfully shield a burgeoning bump from onlookers -because you haven’t announced your pregnancy yet, or you have but want to avoid bump gawkers, do like Carrie Underwood did when she accepted the Gene Weed Special Achievement Award at the 8th Annual ACM Honors at the Ryman Auditorium on September 9, 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Go with a peplum top or a dress with a peplum waist element to it to shield the belly. It worked well for Underwood, who recently announced she and hubby Mike Fisher are expecting their first child together.

Here are ways to do it:

Study: Toddlers learn words differently as they age

A new study found that toddlers learn words differently as they age, and can only learn but so many new ones each day.
This new University of Missouri research provides insight as to how children process information to learn new words as they move through the preschool years, according to a press release about the findings.
“We found that babies’ abilities to accurately guess the meaning of new words increases between 18 and 30 months of age, and by 24 to 36 months, toddlers are able to accurately guess the meanings of new words at a significantly higher level,” Judith Goodman, an associate professor in the MU School of Health Professions and chair of the Department of Communication Science and Disorders said. “Interestingly, we observed that even from the time children mature from 18 to 30 months of age, the cues toddlers use to learn new words change.”
Researchers taught children, who ranged in age from 18 to 36 months,  six new words using three types of cues, taking note of children’s ability to accurately guess what the words meant.
“When children were presented with a new word and asked to choose between an item for which they already had a name and an unfamiliar object, they appropriately assigned the new word to the unfamiliar object, and this ability improved as children aged,” Goodman said. “The toddlers’ ability to infer a word’s meaning from linguistic context, such as figuring out that a ‘kiwi’ must be a food item when they hear, ‘Sammy eats the kiwi,’ also improved as the children aged. However, using social cues, such as eye gaze, became less effective as the children matured. By 36 months of age, children were less likely to assume a word referred to the particular object a speaker was looking at – looking at a kiwi when teaching the child the word ‘kiwi’ – than younger children were.”
Goodman also found that a limit exists as to how many words toddlers can retain. A day after the children learned the six words, the researchers tested whether the children remembered the words. The children better remembered the first three words they had learned the first day, Goodman said.
Children who are struggling with learning language may benefit from being presented with specific cues, Goodman said. Additionally, the research reinforces the importance of providing children with rich word-learning environments, in which toddlers are exposed to many words and are provided with a variety of cues to help them learn and remember those words and what they represent, Goodman said.
“When you’re working with young children who are learning language, it’s important to talk to them all the time and label everything in their environments,” Goodman said. “At home, parents can name household items or foods the children are eating. If out on an excursion, such as a trip to the zoo, parents can label the animals they see.”
The study, “The Type, but Not the Amount, of Information Available Influences Toddlers’ Fast Mapping and Retention of New Words,” was published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Kathryn Brady, an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, was the first author on the paper, which was based on her dissertation research completed at MU. The research was supported in part by the Student Research Grant in Early Childhood Language Acquisition from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.

After Baby: 12 ways to maintain your relationship with your partner

While it’s no secret to any couple past the honeymoon stage that marriage requires work in order to be successful, it can come as a surprise to new parents just how much raising children changes the dynamic of a marriage. Keeping the ever-elusive “spark” alive after babies come along can be one of the biggest challenges that a married couple faces, but it’s absolutely possible. These 12 pointers can help you maintain the great relationship you have, even when the demands of parenthood begin to weigh on you both.

  1. Put in the Effort – It may seem simple on the surface, but just remembering to put some effort towards maintaining your marriage when you’re exhausted, mired in the world of potty training or just trying to keep up with a demanding family schedule can be a challenge. Just like anything else worth having, a marriage does require at least some effort from both parties to continue running smoothly.
  2. Try to Focus on the Good Things – Becoming fixated on the frustrating aspects of your marriage is easy, but it’s also poisonous. Trying to keep the things you love most about your partner and your lives together at the forefront of your mind will require some dedication, but it can have very positive results in the long run.
  3. Compliments, Compliments – There are a thousand things you love about your spouse, but the hectic pace of everyday life can make remembering to appreciate those things difficult. Making a point of complimenting your spouse each day shows appreciation for them and can be the balm that frazzled nerves need during high-stress moments.
  4. Avoid Taking Stress Out On Your Spouse – Letting off steam is normal, but it can become problematic when you’re expressing your frustration with an unrelated situation by attacking your spouse. It’s easy to take stress out on those closest to you, but it’s difficult to repair the damage that type of behavior can have on your relationship.
  5. Make Time for One Another – Time probably isn’t something that you have very much of, which makes it all the more significant when you set a sliver of your precious free time aside to spend with your spouse.
  6. Remember That Your Partner is Not a Mind-Reader – You may have a running list of things that need to be done in your head, but you shouldn’t expect your partner to be able to read that list. You have to communicate your needs and expectations to your spouse if you expect them to be met, so don’t fall into the trap of expecting them to just know what you need without direction.
  7. Don’t Be Too Proud to Apologize – Flying off the handle is easy when you’re in the pressure cooker that is raising children on a tight schedule. When you’ve had time to cool off, however, don’t let your pride stand in the way of a much-warranted apology, especially if you’ve realized that your reaction wasn’t necessary.
  8. Assume the Best – When you’re stressed, tired and in sore need of a break, it’s easy to assume the worst as you’re trying to decipher the inscrutable actions of your spouse. Rather than believing the worst-case scenario is just around the corner, try to assume the best intentions were the motivation behind any behavior you don’t understand.
  9. Small Gestures Go a Long Way – A sweet greeting card snagged from the rack at the market, a favorite food prepared for dinner and other small gestures like these can add up in big ways, especially when they’re the bright spot in a challenging day. Remembering to do these things amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life isn’t always easy, but it’s almost always worth the effort.
  10. Seek Spontaneity – Look for every opportunity to do something lighthearted and unexpected, even when you can only grab a few moments in which to do so. Just because your impromptu road trip days have come to an end doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice every shred of spontaneity in your marriage.
  11. Remember That You’re Playing on the Same Team – When little grievances add up to big problems, you can easily lose sight of the fact that you and your spouse are on the same team and are pursuing a common goal. Rather than seeing your spouse as the opposition, try to shift your perspective.
  12. Be Adults Together – In a sea of diapers, cartoons and juice boxes, there isn’t always room for a grown-up discussion that doesn’t center around the practical aspects of running a household. Just spending a kid-free hour of television time together before bed can create interesting talking points. Every couple has their own shared favorite pastimes, but it’s important to spend time together being adults, not just oversized kid-wranglers.

TREND ALERT: Flash Tattoos as rocked by Beyonce and other celeb moms

Several of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums have been spotted recently sporting the Flash Tattoo Trend. Seen often in recent days on Beyonce, and in Jessica Alba‘s instagram  feed as well as young Hollywood stars like Vanessa Hudgens  (all above), these temporary metallic tattoos are inspired by jewelry.
They last only 6 days and are great too for preginistas who are trendy but certainly cannot and should not be getting any new ink while preggers.
You can wear them solo or along with real jewelry to create a layering effect. Here are our fave designs.
Would you wear them?

Eco Friday: How to Plan a Green Halloween

Green Halloween is volunteer-run, grassroots initiative started by a Seattle-area mom who, back in 2007, approached Whole Foods with an idea to make Halloween a holiday that is better for the environment, but still fun.  Whole Foods loved the idea and it got picked up by local and then national press and since then has grown into a nationwide movement. In 2010, Green Halloween became an official program of EcoMom Alliance, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, and global network of green moms.

You can go to the website to get some tips and ideas on how to make this Halloween a green one.   Here are a few scrubbed from its Green Halloween website:

It’s really not about the candy. Kids have fun when their parents get involved and have fun themselves. Part of being green is focusing on people instead of things, so try to reduce the amount of ‘things’ you incorporate into your Halloween by increasing the focus on fun. Here are some ideas for making your Green Halloween fun for your kids and for you:

  • Make a big deal of your child’s costume – getting dressed, taking pictures, etc.
  • Have a neighborhood party and forgo trick-or-treating all together. Ask your child’s school to consider making their Halloween celebration green as well.
  • Have a charity-themed party. Instead of giving out prizes for games, allow children to pick from a list of charities and make a donation in their name.
  • Have a Halloween gratitude party. Deliver handmade cards to your local farmer and take a tour of his/her field. Arrange before hand for each child to bring a mini pumpkin home.
  • Talk to your neighbors about what they will be giving away in advance. One option is to trick-or-treat only at homes where you know Green Halloween items will be passed out.
  • Show your Green by displaying your own Green Halloween sign and ask your Green Halloween neighbors to do the same. Turn looking for the signs into a hunt for treasures. The Green Halloween sign on your own door will announce to trick-or-treaters that they’re in for a great surprise!
  • Give kids a full, healthy meal before they go out trick-or-treating so they are not hungry.
  • Talk to your kids about what is in candy and why it is not healthy. Ask them to come up with creative, kid and Earth-friendly alternatives that your own family can hand out and feel good about.
  • When trick-or-treaters come to your door, shout, “Happy Hallo-green!!!

Check out GREEN HALLOWEEN for more tips, ideas, games, printables, costume suggestions and more for kids, parents, teachers, schools and community organization! Good luck!

Kate Middleton’s Hypermesis Gravidarum: What is it?

With news that Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, is hospitalized (again) with severe morning sickness, there are countless mothers rolling their eyes, and many mothers-to-be dreading the possibility of feeling that bad.
Almost any woman who has been pregnant can tell you the moniker “morning sickness,” is a bit of a misnomer since the nausea can strike at any time.  While most women experience some form of morning sickness, most manage the nausea and vomiting on their own. However, there are women who do suffer from extreme morning sickness.
Extreme morning sickness is known in the medical community as hyperemesis gravidarum, and effects approximately 1% of pregnant women.  It tends to start earlier in pregnancy than regular morning sickness, and last longer. Typical morning sickness tends to wane as the second trimester begins, however for those with hyperemesis gravidarum the nausea and vomiting can last longer, even through the entire pregnancy.
While the nausea and vomiting associated with normal morning sickness is not considered harmful to mother or baby, hyperemesis gravidarum can potentially be harmful to the health of mother, baby, or both.  While many women who experience some vomiting in the first trimester may notice slight weight loss, women with severe morning sickness cannot keep enough in their stomach to meet the nutritional needs of mother and baby.
Also, persistent vomiting can lead to dehydration, which under normal circumstances is dangerous, but when pregnant can endanger the fetus.  A women with hyperemesis gravidarum who does not get treatment is at risk for complications, including organ failure and premature birth.
Currently, the causes of morning sickness, let alone severe morning sickness, are unknown. Some research has shown that it could be related to the levels of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG. While every woman and every pregnancy are different there are some factors that might make you more prone to experiencing hyperemesis gravidarum.
If your mother or grandmother experienced severe morning sickness, you might be more prone to it. Also, those who are have a history of motion sickness, or migraines with vomiting or nausea, and those who are carrying multiples are at higher risk for developing such severe symptoms.
Signs of hyperemesis gravidarum include persistent nausea, inability to eat or keep anything down, weightloss, faintness or dizziness, rapid heartbeat, recurrent headaches, extreme fatigue, and confusion. While some of these symptoms are par for the course with pregnancy, if you are suffering from morning sickness, talk to your doctor.
For many women, there is little that can be done. For severe nausea, some doctors prescribed Zofran, and anti-nausea drug that is commonly used to treat nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
