Study: Antidepressants Taken During Pregnancy Impacts Baby’s Speech

Children whose mothers used an often-prescribed type of antidepressant during pregnancy may be more likely to develop speech and language disorders, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that mothers who bought selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs at least twice during pregnancy were 37 percent more likely to have a child with a speech and/or language disorder than those who did not take the antidepressants.

SSRIs include medicines such as Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft.

The study was observational, meaning it couldn’t prove that the drugs helped cause the language/speech problems, only that there was an association. And experts who reviewed the findings stressed that women who require an SSRI during their pregnancy may still want to stick with the drug.

“It must be remembered that the prevalence of speech-language disorders was very low in all of the offspring studied — including those infants exposed to SSRIs prenatally,” said Dr. Andrew Adesman. He’s chief of child, developmental & behavioral pediatrics at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

‘Atlanta’ Actor/Producer Donald Glover Had his First Child in Spring; Didn’t Tell A Soul

As actor Donald Glover rose in fame and popularity, he became even more and more private. So private that he deleted all of his social media posts except the trailer for his new FX channel TV show, Atlanta.

So, it comes as no surprise that he and his girlfriend had a baby in May and no-one knew…until now that the media randomly caught wind.

US Weekly reports that people spotted him and his mystery woman at a grocery store in Hawaii in January this year with her looking about 7 to 8 months pregnant.

In May, she was seen pushing a baby stroller. Doh!

Glover grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness in Stone Mountain, Georgia and is best known for his role at Troy on the hit NBC TV show Community, and as a comedian. He also wrote for the hit NBC TV show 30Rock for several years and has a successful rap career as his alter ego Childish Gambino.

I love his FX show which is about a Princeton University student who drops out, who life as an unemployed drifter with his ex-girlfriend and their baby and tries to become rich by managing his up and coming rapper cousin, Paper Boi.

He’s told multiple press outlets that he didn’t attempt to make a hit show when he pitched and got Atlanta greenlit.

“Atlanta is a Trojan horse,” Glover told Timemagazine in August. “The thesis was: How do we make people feel black? It turned into something more attainable than that, but that was the idea. I was like, ‘Let’s make something that shouldn’t be on the air, something controversial.’ If it’s canceled in 10 episodes, I’ll be happy with those episodes.”

Since becoming a fan of the show which Glover stars in, produces and writes, I’ve gone back to check out his stand up, music and past videos and have become obsessed fan. The boy has serious talent!

‘The Real’s Adrienne Bailon on Becoming a Stepmom

The U.S. Census estimates about 50% of families are some form of stepfamily. The stepfamily has become the modern family.

Today on the FOX daytime panel talk show, The REAL, during its “Girl Talk” segment, co-host Adrienne Bailon discussed becoming a stepmom to her fiancé Israel Houghton’s four children.

During the segment, Hougton (who is visiting but is shown off set to the side), shares what the kids call Adrienne (“A”) and Jeannie Mai asks what the couple would prefer the kids call here.

“If someone were to say, ‘Who is she?’ What do they say?” Bailon asks Hougton who responds, “They would probably say, ‘My dad’s wife.’ Right, something like that?”

Adrienne disagrees with Loni Love‘s suggestion that the kids may tell their friends that Adrienne is their stepmom, because “it sounds mean,” Bailon states.

Tamera Mowry-Housley then asks Hougton would he be okay with Bailon disciplining the children.

According to our past post about 14 tips for making blended family work, our experts suggests, that the biological parent only should discipline his/her children and the stepparent would only discipline based on rules agreed upon and presented to kids as a couple.”

Adrienne is thus correct in her reply when she tells the audience that she has no intention on sending the kids to their room.

“No, I’m not doing that. We are going to be good cop, bad cop and I am the good one, okay!” she tells Houghton who agrees, ” She’s going to be the good cop.”

Pres. Obama Signed Law Requiring Changing Stations in Men’s Restrooms

The First Dad is looking out fall other dads.

Last week, the US President Barack Obama signed into law the Bathrooms Accessible in Every Situation Act, or the BABIES Act requiring publicly accessible bathrooms in federal buildings to have baby changing stations in both men’s and women’s bathrooms.

Rhode Island Representative David Cicilline introduced the bill in April this year which passed into law this summer with support from Republicans as well as Democrats and very little opposition.

Now dads out with baby can comfortably change a diaper and it won’t be all on moms and baby won’t have to wait until get home to get out of a stinky diaper.

Well…only when they’re in a federal building. The law still doesn’t apply to private facilities and neither does it apply in employee-only bathrooms. Also, if a federal building already has a baby changing station in a male-accessible bathroom (such as a unisex single-stall bathroom), it doesn’t need to install another changing station in the men’s bathrooms. Well, that makes sense.

Changes in those area may come soon or maybe more private companies may buckle under pressure. Last year, actor Ashton Kutcher created a petition to get Target and Costco to add changing stations, arguing “dads, like myself, want to participate equally in the child care process and our society should support that.”

Also, a New York State Senator, Brad Hoylman, has noted that single fathers or same-sex couples are also out of luck if the only changing stations available are in women’s bathrooms.

How to Donate Excess Halloween Candy to US Troops’ Care Packages

Parents, link up with your area dentist to donate all that surplus candy your kids will get this Halloween to troops and First Responders.

I’ve blogged before about various organizations that collect candy and this year Kool Smile dental offices are collecting candy beginning Friday, Oct. 28 through Saturday, Nov. 5. You don’t have to be a current patient to participate!

For every 25 pieces of candy you donate, Kool Smiles will give you a toy for your kid and we know toys are better for preventing cavities than sticky sweet candy.

The candy is distributed later by Operation Gratitude which will include it in care packages to our brave men and women serving in the Armed Forces overseas to remind them of home sweet home.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ care packages to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Each package is filled with food, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, as well as personal letters of support. Our mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the Military and First Responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation. Each package contains donated product valued between $45 and $100 and costs our organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1.6 Million Care Packages.

Last year, Kool Smiles patient families donated a record-breaking 6,520 pounds of Halloween candy, that’s over 3 tons, to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces overseas.

Marsha Ambrosious Announced Her Pregnancy This Summer in the Official Celeb Way

I had a disagreement with a friend a while ago about a celebrity pregnancy announcement. She disagreed with me that a celebrity cupping her belly at a public event counts as a pregnancy announcement.

Indeed, it is informal but it is the new way. Beyonce, Amber Rose, Marion Cotillard and Gwen Stefani all “announced” their pregnancies that way. They each did the cupping the belly red carpet reveal.

I didn’t realize that one of my husband’s fave recording artist multi Grammy-award winning singer Marsha Ambrosious, formerly of the group Floetry, is expecting her first child with her boyfriend Dez Billups.

She announced the news this summer while performing at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. She did so by cupping her belly on the stage. Without doing that, it is possible, fans may have assumed perhaps she just gained a little weight.

The “Late Nights & Early Mornings” singer later confirmed the news to Essence.com.

“I didn’t anticipate live music to do what it was going to do,” the “Far Away” singer said of her soon-to-be-born daughter while performing or listening to music. “It’s like an internal earthquake every time music plays. It’s brand new to me but it’s so exciting. I don’t know what she’s doing right now.”

Celebrate International Day of the Girl Child

Today, October 11, is the day that the United Nations chose to declare the International Day of the Girl Child. It is a movement meant to bring attention to advocacy projects and initiatives around the world to promote the education, safety and security of young girls globally.

Specifically, the mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”

On this day, activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere.

It’s also a national day of action to elevate awareness of gender justice and youth rights.

If you have a girl who has lots of potential and opportunity, take this day to learn about ways you can help other girls around the world be in a position to reach her full potential as well.
