7 ways to keep the kids busy during winter months

Winter doesn’t have to be a dreary and dreadful time. We are stuck in doors and may be sidelined but delays and cancellations when the weather gets bad. Finding things to do with the children that doesn’t involve electronics can be a challenge but our friends at summernanny.com offer the following tips for you to make winter months easier to deal with:

Bundle up and enjoy your favorite activities. Cold temperatures and snowy roads don’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Sure, it takes a lot more time and effort to get ready to go outside, but it’s worth it. Once you get putting on the snowsuit, boots, hats and gloves down to a routine, you’ll practically whiz right through it. And when you’re all bundled up and outdoors, kids can enjoy many of the same things they do in other seasons. You can go for a walk, play on the swings, run around the backyard or hit the slide. You can enjoy being together and being active, even when the thermometer dips.

Get back to basic outdoor fun. There’s no beating basic winter fun like sledding down a favorite hill, building a snowman complete with carrot nose and button eyes, having a snowball fight with siblings or neighborhood friends or ice skating on the local frozen pond. This is the stuff childhood memories are made of. Instead of watching from the sidelines, be an active part of the memory making. Jump on the sled for your own ride down the hill. It’s just as fun as an adult as it was as a child.

Create new winter games. There’s no end to the creative ways you can have fun outside during the winter months. Make colored icicles, paint in the snow with colored water, add fun shapes to the iced sensory table or set up a snowball target game. You can create a fun, engaging outdoor environment that your kids will enjoy and learn from. Get kids involved in developing new, fun things to do outside. Kids have amazing imaginations, and with a few simple household supplies they’ll create games and play spaces that will keep them occupied for long stretches of time.

Take advantage of local indoor play spaces. Many community centers offer indoor play spaces during the winter months. These spaces usually offer a free play area where kids can run, jump, twirl and bounce. Tumbling mats and cushioned climbing squares allow kids to release their pent up energy in a safe environment. Indoor spaces also offer riding toys like tricycles, scooters and kid sized cars. Some even provide kid sized props like stop signs, gas pumps and police stations; encouraging kids to create their own cities and towns. This type of imaginary play can keep your child busy for hours on end.

Head to the pool. It’s seems like an odd time to go swimming, but the winter months are the perfect time to enroll your child in lessons or reinforce his current swimming skills. It’s a perfect way to get some exercise into his weekly schedule and it’s lots of fun to boot. When summer rolls around, he won’t be spending his time learning to swim or getting reacquainted with the water. He’ll be ready to enjoy the local pool, lake or beach.

Find a local playgroup. If you have to be inside, it’s always more fun with friends. Connect with other parents or caregivers in your area through online sites or local parenting groups. Some groups have a multiple age make-up, which is a great fit if you have more than one child. Other groups focus on one age range, which is perfect if you have one child or are looking for a social outlet for a particular child. These weekly groups give your child a fun activity to look forward to and they provide you with social connections, resources and support.

Do some of the things you don’t have time for in the busy summer months. When the weather’s nice, chances are you’re too busy to take on some of the projects your kids would like to do. Wintertime is your chance to catch up. Spend an afternoon baking cookies for the local fire department. Pull out all the arts and crafts supplies and create new art pieces for your child’s bedroom wall. Long, dark afternoons can be the perfect excuse for tackling those put off projects.

Good luck parents!

Women giving birth not knowing they were pregnant is common

The news that a Boston area woman gave birth one hour after discovering she was pregnant isn’t that surprising. Not when you consider that the hospital where she gave birth in, South Shore Hospital in Massachusetts, stated that it happens once or twice a year there.
It’s common for overweight or obese women to miss pains of pregnancy and weight gain, ABC News senior medical contributor Dr. Jennifer Ashton said.
In fact, that was the case here.
New mom Katherine Kropas told reporters that she thought she was just a little bit heaver from holiday indulging.
A  2002 Berlin study discovered that 1 in 475 women did not realize they were pregnant until they are 4 months along in their pregnancy and one in 2,455 didn’t realize it until they went into labor.
Intense back pains brought Kropas to the hospital this past Tuesday, January 7, and an ultrasound solved the mystery.
“They took one look, and they rushed me off into labor,” she told ABC’s Boston station WCVB. “I found out that I was having a baby at 10:15. She was born at 11:06 p.m.”
Amazing and sad because in these situations, the babies lack crucial pre-natal care.

Celeb moms at 2015 People’s Choice Awards Red Carpet and Show

Tonight, not only did a Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum  co-host the People’s Choice Awards LIVE from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California, but several were up for awards and took home statutes at the show controlled by viewers.
Bumpwatch alum Anna Farris and her Moms CBS co-star Allison Janney hosted the event which had our past featured moms up against one another. Scarlett Johansson, Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana, Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon, Emily Deschanel, Tea Leoni, Angelina Jolie, Mayim Bialik, Hayden Panattiere, Alyssa Milano, Kate Winslet, Carrie Underwood, Hillary Shelton’s “Lady Antebellum” and Ellen Pompeo were all up for awards in various categories. Lady Antebellum, Underwood and Pompeo won in their categories. While projects and shows starring Winslet (Divergent), Jolie (Maleficent) and Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) won as well.  See winners list here

Anna Farris looked sultry in a Juan Carlos Obando top and fishtail skirt, strappy Jimmy Choo heels, accented with Irene Neuwirth earrings and a Graziela Gems ring.
Anna Farris and Allison Janney, co star of the CBS show Moms coordinated well while hosting the show. Love the matching white pant suit. Very “Twins”-ish! ha!

Hillary Scott was looking fab and showing off leg in a Yigal Azrouel dress, worn with shoes by Ralph Lauren  and a Jimmy Choo purse. Her Lady Antebellum bandmates Dave Haywood  and Charles Kelley looked dapper as well, though Kelley explained on the red carpet to Giuliana Rancic that he had ripped his pants in the inseam on the car ride to the show. oops!

Hot Pink was the color Kristen Bell  chose to wear while making her first public appearance since giving birth to daughter Delta this past December. She was rocking an interesting layered  Monique Lhullier dress with silver  Christian Louboutin pumps and accented with  Neil Lane jewelry, and a Jimmy Choo clutch.

I personally loved Giulana Rancic in a mint green Tony Ward dress which gave me a retro 50’s feel and the hair is perfect to match.

Six Curvy/Full Figure Fashion Bloggers You Should Know

 CuurvyCouture
What we love about fashion bloggers over traditional models for clothing lines is that they are able to assemble looks with accessories in a practical way that the average woman can relate to and imagine for themselves. We get a bunch of styling ideas from these women (and some men) who take the time out of their day to snap themselves in their out-of-the-day and share for their followers and readers. Another great thing about Fashion Bloggers is that, unlike traditional professional models, they come in all shapes and sizes. This includes curvy, full figured and plus-sized – depending on your choice of moniker.
Here are 6 fashion bloggers that we scoped out for you to consider following.
We love their style because they are not afraid of COLOR and to play with accessories and a variety of material and textures to mix up their fashion palette.

REPORT: ‘Game of Thrones’ influenced parents to name their babies Khaleesi and other characters

Update in light of recent news that Khaleesi was number 2 of Nameberry’s top 100 baby names of 2014! I’m reposting this piece we shared in April 2014. ENJOY!

—–

With 6.6 million viewers tuning into the first episode of Game of Thrones last Sunday, is there any wonder that 146 babies in 2012 were named after Thrones character Khaleesi?
That’s what Social Security Administration data recently analyzed by the website Vox.com showed. Another character Daenerys made the list of baby names that year too.  But only 21 baby girls will have to live their lives with that name made up by Thrones author George R.R. Martin.  A few other hundred baby girls are named after Thrones character Arya, an Entertainment Weekly piece pointed out
It’s not uncommon for parents to name their children after characters in popular TV shows and movies. Hunger Games protagonist “Katniss” influenced of dozens of baby girls to be given them that name. The name “Bella” jumped from 2,780 uses to 5,104 uses within two years of release of the Twilight series, Yahoo Shine noted.
The names “Phoebe” and “Piper” rose to popularity during the years the show Charmed was on TV as did names “Willow” and “Zander” during the Buffy the Vampire slayer years, the Shine piece noted.  Laura Wattenberg, author of “The Baby Name Wizard,” told Shine that as far back as the 80s, women who enjoyed Daryl Hannah‘s character in the movie Splash name herself Madison after seeing it on a NYC sign grew up to name their kids that. SSA data showed that 42 baby girls had that name in 1984, the year the movie came out. But the following year 298 babies were named Madison, eventually growing in popularity to 20,612 in 2004. That’s a lot of influence and no one would imagine that the name originated from a New York City street.
And the phenomenon goes back even further than that. Wattenberg told Shine “Samantha”on the show Bewitched helped that name grow in popularity following its run from 1964 to 1972 on TV.
It’s interesting how pop culture cinema and TV shows have that effect on lives for years after they are no longer in regular circulation. It would be interesting to see if the future Game of Throne-named children will get any negative reaction to the names over years especially from people who are not aware of the book or series years after it has its course too or if the names will continue on.
Time will tell.

LAST MINUTE GIFTS: 8 Great Multicultural Books published this year

Times are tense these days as the nation mourns the death of two New York City police officers shot dead execution style recently, a tragedy amidst ongoing protests over shooting deaths at the hands of unarmed men at the hands of some officers. Some parents may find themselves having to address these highly contentious issues to help their children make sense of it all.
But dealing with controversial topics like race and culture can be made easier if parents make sure that throughout their kids’ lives they expose them to the stories of diverse people and cultures different from their own.  Their children will  grow with a healthy appreciation for all people and may be more willing to take a holistic, fair, balanced and empathetic approach to listening and hearing the concerns of those who live in far off places from their own home — even if that place is within their country.
Dr. Claudette S. McLinn, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature, recently curated a listing of close to three dozen multicultural books released this year she deems the best. I selected 7  of them to share with Bellyitch readers along with one additional book I reviewed personally. I pulled the Amazon.com review summary of each book I have not read.
If you are still looking for last  minute gift ideas for young elementary thru high-school aged children, and are relatively close to a bookstore, consider popping in to see if they have these titles. Otherwise, consider ordering them from our Amazon affiliate and having them shipped to that young reader in your life.
A TIME TO DANCE by Padma Venkatraman, 307 pages, published by Nancy Paulsen Books, an imprint of Penguin Group, ©2014 (Middle school/High school, fiction/novel in verse)
Padma Venkatraman’s inspiring story of a young girl’s struggle to regain her passion and find a new peace is told lyrically through verse that captures the beauty and mystery of India and the ancient bharatanatyam dance form. This is a stunning novel about spiritual awakening, the power of art, and above all, the courage and resilience of the human spirit.
THE RED PENCIL, by Andrea Davis Pinkney, illustrated by Shane W. Evans, 308 pages, published by Little, Brown and Company, ©2014 (Upper elementary school/Middle school, nonfiction)
New York Times bestselling and Coretta Scott King Award-winning author Andrea Davis Pinkney’s powerful verse and Coretta Scott King Award-winning artist Shane W. Evans’s breathtaking illustrations combine to tell an inspiring tale of a Sudanese girl’s triumph against all odds, traveling to and surviving a refugee camp with the help of a red pencil.
THE MADMAN OF PINEY WOODS, by Christopher Paul Curtis, 363 pages, published by Scholastic Press, ©2014 (Upper elementary school/Middle school, fiction)
Benji and Red couldn’t be more different. They aren’t friends. They don’t even live in the same town. But their fates are entwined. A chance meeting leads the boys to discover that they have more in common than meets the eye. Both of them have encountered a strange presence in the forest, watching them, tracking them. Could the Madman of Piney Woods be real?
GABI: A GIRL IN PIECES, by Isabel Quintero, 284 pages, published by Cinco Puntos Press, ©2014 (High school, fiction)
Sixteen-year-old Gabi Hernandez has a lot to deal with during her senior year. Her best friend Cindy is pregnant; her other best friend Sebastian

just got kicked out of his house for coming out to his strict parents; her meth addict dad is trying to quit, again; and her super religious Tía Bertha is constantly putting a damper on Gabi’s love life. In lyrical diary entries peppered with the burgeoning poet’s writing, Spanglish, and phone conversations, Quintero gives voice to a complex, not always likable but totally believable teen who struggles to figure out her own place in the world. Believing she’s not Mexican enough for her family and not white enough for Berkeley, Gabi still meets every challenge head-on with vulgar humor and raw honesty. (Amazon review Excerpt)

TWENTY-TWO CENTS: MUHAMMAD YUNUS AND THE VILLAGE BANK, by Paula Yoo, illustrated by Jamel Akib, 40 pages, published by Lee & Low Books Inc., ©2014 (Elementary school, nonfiction/biography)
Growing up in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus witnessed extreme poverty all around and was determined to eradicate it. In 1976, as an Economics professor, Muhammad met a young craftswoman in the village of Jobra who needed to borrow five taka (twenty-two cents) to buy materials. No bank would lend such a small amount to an uneducated woman, so she was forced to borrow from corrupt lenders who charged an unfair interest

rate, and left her without enough profit to buy food. Muhammad realized that what stood in the way of her financial security was just a few cents. Inspired, Muhammad founded Grameen Bank where people could borrow small amounts of money to start a job, and then pay back the bank without exorbitant interest charges. Over the next few years, Muhammad’s compassion and determination changed the lives of millions of people by loaning the equivalent of more than ten billion US dollars in micro-credit. This has also served to advocate and empower the poor, especially women, who often have limited options. Twenty-two Cents is an inspiring story of economic innovation and a celebration of how one person—like one small loan—can make a positive difference in the lives of many.

THE CROSSOVER by Kwame Alexander, 237 pages, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, ©2014 (Middle school/High school, fiction/novel in verse)
“With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . .The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING. Stop all that quivering. Cuz tonight I’m delivering,” announces dread-locked, 12-year old Josh Bell. He and his twin brother Jordan are awesome on the court. But Josh has more than basketball in his blood, he’s got mad beats, too, that tell his family’s story in verse, in this fast and furious middle grade novel of family and brotherhood from Kwame Alexander (He Said, She Said 2013).
Josh and Jordan must come to grips with growing up on and off the court to realize breaking the rules comes at a terrible price, as their story’s heart-stopping climax proves a game-changer for the entire family.
LITTLE MELBA AND HER BIG TROMBONE, by Katherine Russell-Brown, illustrated by Frank Morrison, 34 pages, published by Lee &Low Books, Inc., ©2014 (Elementary school, nonfiction/biography, picture book)
Melba Doretta Liston loved the sounds of music from as far back as she could remember. As a child, she daydreamed about beats and lyrics, and hummed along with the music from her family s Majestic radio. At age seven, Melba fell in love with a big, shiny trombone, and soon taught herself to play the instrument. By the time she was a

teenager, Melba s extraordinary gift for music led her to the world of jazz. She joined a band led by trumpet player Gerald Wilson and toured the country. Overcoming obstacles of race and gender, Melba went on to become a famed trombone player and arranger, spinning rhythms, harmonies, and melodies into gorgeous songs for all the jazz greats of the twentieth century: Randy Weston, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and Quincy Jones, to name just a few. Brimming with ebullience and the joy of making music, Little Melba and Her Big Trombone is a fitting tribute to a trailblazing musician and a great unsung hero of jazz.

My addition:
PRINCESS CUPCAKE JONES WON’T GO TO SCHOOL  by Ylleya Fields, illustrated by Michael LaDuca, 32 pages, published by Belle Publishing, 2014 (Elementary school, fiction, picture book)
PRINCESS CUPCAKE  is a heartwarming storybook tale about a young princess who comes up with a laundry list of tricks to avoid going to school the first day. None work, but by the end she realizes quickly that school wouldn’t be bad after all. The illustrations are modern and colorful and bring Fields story to life. Personally, it reminds me of my 7-year old daughter who had to start a new school mid year recently and was also nervous about doing so. Like Cupcake Jones in this book, my daughter too made friends on the first day and quickly adapted.  This is  is the second in an ongoing series by the South American born Cleveland transplant author who said she was struck by the limit of books featuring African American characters and penned the book by blending her daughters’ personalities together. My daughter read it from front to back when the same day our complimentary review copy ($15.95) came in the mail. She loved it too!

The Top 10 Most “Googled” Celebrity Kids

Bellyitch Rewind

BuzzFeed has a quiz article out that asks which recently born or currently incubating celebrity baby will “reign supreme” in the future and be the “it” children that will be the most popular and most followed.
When you first see the headline, one may be inclined to roll  one’s eyes and question why we have become a society that obsesses with children of celebrities.
But given that Bellyitch Blog since 2007 has covered and follows celebrity pregnancies, we must say that we have noticed that indeed there are certain celebrity off springs that get more attention than others.
Consider the fact that there are several websites like this and this one dedicated to Suri Cruise‘s fashion. And the offspring of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise is keeping food on people’s table. The author of a satirical website, Suri’s Burn Book, was able to parlay her popular snarky Tumblr blog about the tot to tween into a lucrative book deal.
Before Prince George even turned, he was already the star of  the What Prince George Wore blog.  Many people are also obsessed of how Blue Ivy and North West are wearing their hair and being dressed by their duo famous parents, Beyonce and Jay Z; and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Perhaps because their parents are popular, or they get the most paparazzi following them around or simply editors at magazines keep greenlighting articles about them, there are definitely more popular celeb kids.
From our unscientific and independent survey of various articles, stories and Google images that crop up under the subject “celebrity kid”, we’ve noticed that the top 10, who have the most images, include:

1. Suri Cruise (Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise)

2. Blue Ivy  (Beyonce Knowles and Shawn Jay Z Carter)

Harper and Victoria Beckham

3. Prince George (Kate Middleton and Prince William)

4. Nahla Aubry (Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry)

5. North West (Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West)

6. Kingston Rossdale (Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale)

7. Mason Disick (Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick)

8. Skylar Berman (Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman)

9. Zahra Jolie-Pitt (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt)

10. Harper Beckhan (Victoria Beckham and David Beckham)

What do you think? Who are the most popular celeb kids in your book? Do you think we obsess too much over celebrity children.

Trend: The Flip Phone makes a come-back

The flip phone is on the comeback.
Ever since Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Kate Beckinsale and our Bellyitch BumpWatch alum Scarlett Johansson were spotted chatting on flip phones this year, folks have been scrambling to follow suit and snatch up cute simple functional phones.
Whether these fashion icons made the switch out of fear of hackers, interest in just having a simple streamline device to just talk on, a small phone they can easily carry around or just interest in a simpler way, they’re still contributing to a new trend.
Would you get a flip phone?
