We answer: When do babies start remembering things?

Your baby will start recording things in her mind from birth but will not be aware of what is really happening. During the third trimester of your pregnancy your baby will have begun to recognize your voice and at four days old she will be able to distinguish between your face and a stranger’s. It is at this time she will also recognize Dad if he has been present throughout the pregnancy. She will certainly recognize your smell and be comforted by it from birth.
A researcher recently carried out the following experiment. He looked at babies aged two months whilst they were in their cots and awake. He repetitively poked his tongue out at the babies who watched with fascination. Twenty-four hours later he returned to the same babies in their cots and looked at them but this time he did not stick out his tongue. The babies amazingly started to stick their tongues out at him as if to say ‘I remember you! This is what you did!’ This ability in identifying people and things is known as recognition memory and it gets stronger and better as your baby gets older. A newborn baby will recognize her mother’s voice from birth because she will already be familiar with her voice from her time in the womb. A week after birth a breastfed baby will recognize her mother’s smell. A few months after birth your baby will begin to recognize faces that she often sees and may develop a preference for some, usually her mother and father’s as she spends the most time with them.
Between six months and a year, your infant will develop and enhance her recall memory. This is her ability to recollect a specific experience and some of its details for a short time. Once this type of memory begins to develop in your baby she will begin to become more emphatic about what she wants. The things that she will remember first are those which are repeated often and those which hold more importance to her, for example; meal times, play times, bath time and also specific toys that she has become attached to. You will notice that she might start to make actions she has associated with certain toys and she will learn what activity comes after the other because of repetition of the event. When you notice that your baby knows what is coming next it is showing you she remembers what happened last time.
Once your baby is one to two years old she will have begun to remember some words. She will recognize familiar faces like other family members and you will see this in her excitement in seeing them. It is a joy to watch and be surprised by how much she can remember as she grows older.
Conscious, long lasting memory develops when your little one is fourteen to eighteen months old. This is when she starts to remember specific events. At two years of age your child will have the ability to remember facts and events for example, going to the circus or the park with her grandmother. Observing your child grow and develop her memory you will notice how she will begin to link experiences in her past to her current experiences. By recollecting her experiences she will start to have expectations of what will happen in the future.

Coming of Age story ‘Little Boy’ opens nationwide today

It’s been five years and two child births coming, but today the film Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, actress, model, mompreneur Ali Landry stars in and supported her husband  Alejandro Monteverde to make, opens to audiences nationwide.

Little Boy is the coming-of-age World War II-era film about an 8-year old boy Pepper Flynt Busbee (Jakob Salvati) crippled with stunted growth who finds courage and uses the power of will, imagination and faith to try to bring his recently-deployed dad back from war.

Landry plays a woman whose husband leaves for war in the film and fun fact: her youngest, Valentin Francesco, appeared in the movie too while in utero (inside his mommy’s tummy) and out as an infant in one of the final film sequences. Landry is close to 9-months pregnant in one scene and another features her cradling  then-newborn Valentin .

I got a chance to interview Monteverde who co-wrote, produced and directed the movie and gather more insight into its making.
He said he thought the movie would take three months to write but it ended up taking three years. From completion to editing to post production, it has turned into a 5 year project.
The previews project a very visual image of Americana. It’s not just a caricature but a living duplication of that era as I learned  Monteverde created 95% of the town where Little Boy is set — from scratch.
“It was great to work with because we had real cement, light poles, streets and street signs, ” Monteverde reveals.
It’s worth it because scenes from the movie certainly evoke nostalgia of an era long passed. A real-authentic set distinguishes the movie from a lot of current films made in this era of CGI movie magic where scenes in a digital lab are created after the actors go home.
If the setting looks familiar maybe it’s because Monteverde got the inspiration for the entire town from one of those classic Normal Rockwell paintings. It certainly oozes of Midwestern puritanical innocence and optimism.
But that comfort and secure is abruptly interrupted with the realism of war, prejudice and discrimination, as it was a time when Japanese Americans were interned in camps.
The movie is also a modern fable set in the 1940s, Monteverde says of the story line that has several lessons interwoven throughout.
What also appears unique is that the film explores the vulnerability and emotions of a boy. These days movies about feelings are usually centered around female or little girl characters.
Another element that may stand out to movie goers is  how Little Boy seems to evoke themes of God, religion, agnosticism and spirituality.
WATCH THE TRAILER

“The deeper I got into the movie, the more layers we uncovered,” the film maker reveals about the project which he says touches so many different themes. “It’s like when you plant a seed, you don’t know how it will come into fruition. As we saw the film take form, all those little things we were writing about in the beginning start to come out.”
There are a lot of subtexts, he adds.
“It’s about the power of the will and believing in the impossible…we are every day faced with many challenges in our lives and the world belongs to those who believe they can overcome those challenges,” added Monteverde.
“It depends how deep you want to go. You can take what you can from the external layers or you can watch it and discover the other layers; about discrimination, racism, faith v. superstition, will of man v. will of God.”
In the film, main character Pepper’s mentors include a Catholic priest advisor and an agnostic atheist shopkeeper Hashimoto, who Pepper befriends. Both influence Pepper and help him come away with what he is looking for and needs– a way to bring his dad back from war.
There has been a lot of buzz and chatter about the timeline of the movie which takes place before the US retaliated against the Japanese for its attack on Pearl Harbor by dropping the atomic bomb, euphemistically called a “Little Boy” on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. There is an intricate link you’ll get when you see the movie, Monteverde explains.
Monteverde isn’t surprised by the various notions and interpretations the movie is getting.
“This movie explores the pain that World War II  – a war that caused hurt to the world and mainly here in the United States, the hurt that happened at the home front” to those the soldiers left behind and had to deal with the consequence of  their loved ones going to fight. “The foundation of the way the story was born  was I wanted to tell the ultimate underdog story – the one that everyone is against.”
And there is a bit of art imitating life when it comes to the production in that vein.
Compared to his last award-winning project Bella  which took top prize at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, Monteverde had a much bigger budget to utilize to breathe life into this project, about $20 million, but in the grand scheme compared to much larger blockbusters released each year, it’s quite modest, Montverde reveals.
And there he draws the parallels of the theme of the movie along with the symbolism of it being released a week before the highly anticipated Avengers sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Monteverde spoke some about the challenges he faces for a movie that doesn’t have too many bill boards but will spread by ‘word of mouth.’
“The whole movie it about size…the small v. big..the David and Goliath story,” he muses. “The little boy being shorter than everyone else trying to bring about the end to the biggest war. We are little boy. The character.”
We are rooting it on because we love to support our Bellyitch bumpwatch alum families and cheer on the underdog.
Go see Little Boy this weekend and report back and let us know what you think in the comments below or in social media at @Bellyitch on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
The last two best director Oscars went to directors of Mexican origin, Alejandro González Iñárritu for Boyhood and Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity. Perhaps Monteverde can be the third!

Top 10 common movie cliches involving pregnancy

In a recent HuffPo post, blogger Melissa Sher of MamaLingo put together some top cliche things one can expect to see in a movie that has a pregnancy in it and/or  is focused on pregnancy. I was cracking up at the list which to me contributes to so much misinformation and fear people have about pregnancy. Never get your information about pregnancy from a Hollywood film, folks. From Huffpo:
  1. Waiting Room As Party Headquarters  Celebrate good time, come on! Forget just the grandparents. In the movies, everyone’s invited to hang out in the waiting room. The waiting room is fun. Labor is pretty fast so no one ever gets bored. And, there’s always a “nosy messenger,” someone in the group who will check in on what’s going on you-know-where and report back.
  2. The Menstrual-Cycle Calendar Flip Technology schmechnology. Film characters must keep track of their periods with date books and marker. This way, when a woman thinks she might be pregnant, she can frantically flip backwards through her calendar to find the exact date of her last period.
  3. What To Expect During Labor
Bring earplugs. The breathing is loud: “Hee hee hoo. Hee hee hoo.” And that’s just the father-to-be offering his help. And the woman — when she’s not busy berating him for being alive — is screaming during each contraction. That is, until she is told that she needs to push one more time. (Exactly one more time.) Then, the poor thing will break down. She can’t do it. She can’t. She’s done. She can’t possibly. Not even once more. But… wait… SCR-E-E-E-E-E-AM! Cue the six month old wrapped in a blanket.
  4. The Pregnancy Test As A Social Activity  If you’re a character in a movie, sitcom or even a reality show, taking a home pregnancy test is something you do with a friend. The friend will probably buy the test for you, talk you into taking it, and sit on the sink while you pee on the stick. She’ll also be the one to read and announce the results.
  5. Public Puking Of course, sometimes, our heroine doesn’t know she is pregnant. Sometimes, she has no clue. In those cases, there’s a good chance that she’ll be in the middle of a business presentation in a conference room when she’s hit with her first bout of morning sickness. The poor thing won’t make it to the bathroom in time so she’ll have to make quick use of either a wastebasket or potted plant
  6. Breaking The News  When a movie character tells her husband that she’s pregnant, she does it when he’s in the middle of telling a long story. She will usually just say something like, “I’m pregnant.” (Or, “We’re pregnant” which I can’t stand. There’s no “I” in “team”… and there’s no “we” in “pregnancy.”) The news never registers right away. Instead, he continues talking. Then, he’ll stop and ever-so-slowly look over at his nodding wife.
  7. Baby Shower From Hell  Women who attend baby showers in movies and television shows are the most annoying, uptight guests in the world. Some bring their children to the shower. Those kids will be unruly, booger-picking brats who solely exist to scare the crap out of the pregnant main character.
  8. Start Your Engines Labor can begin one of two ways in the movies. The woman’s water can break. And if it does, it’s a flood of epic proportions all over someone’s shoes or the produce aisle. Or, the woman will calmly notify her husband, “It’s time.”
  9. Wigging Out  It’s time? It’s time?! Let the overacting begin! He zigzags around the house, grabbing a suitcase and running around in circles, while his wife waits patiently. Nine times out of ten, he’ll run out the door without her.
  10. Taxi Driver As Delivery Man There are two reasons that taxicab drivers exist in the movies. The first is to drive a heartbroken young man to the airport to catch the love of his life before she leaves on a flight to Europe. The second is to deliver babies.
Hilarious. What was your favorite?

How to Use Sign Language to connect with your infant

As your infant gets older, she will start to understand her own feelings and needs better, but she still won’t be able to effectively share them with you yet. It can be frustrating for both of you when she’s trying to communicate with you, but hasn’t developed the verbal skills needed to successfully let you know what she needs and wants. Baby sign language can bridge the communication gap and give your baby a way to let you know what’s on her mind. It helps you more quickly understand what your child is trying to say and avoids many of the tantrums and meltdowns that frustration over not being able to communicate brings on. It also is a wonderful way to connect and bond with your baby.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of signing with your infant.
Make it fun. Above all, signing is a way of connecting and bonding with your baby. When you make signing a natural part of your day with him and turn learning time into fun time, you’ll see the best results. Children learn best through play, so introduce and practice the signs during play and relaxation time. You can incorporate signs into songs, word plays and other fun activities you already do with your child.

Don’t expect a response too early. You can start signing to your baby as early as you want to, however, infants aren’t able to understand or respond to your efforts until at least 8 months old. For many, it could be months later. Like any other way of communicating, there isn’t anything wrong with introducing it early and practicing it often. Just don’t pressure your child to embrace signing until he’s ready.
Be realistic about your expectations. Some babies will have more of a natural interest in learning sign language. Others may enjoy the bonding time and interactions with you, but may not latch on to baby sign language as their way of communicating. Let your baby lead the way. Baby sign language is only one way to communicate with your child. If your child doesn’t jump on the signing bandwagon, don’t worry. With time and attention you and your child will develop a system that works for you.
Don’t overwhelm your baby with too many new signs at once. It’s easy to get excited about signing and want to show your baby more and more signs each day. This is especially true if your child has been frustrated at not being able to verbalize his feelings, wants and needs to you and now he suddenly can. However it’s helpful to focus on a few key signs and allow your child time to master those before moving onto additional ones. Soon he’ll have a full signing vocabulary.
Share the signs with other caregivers. Teach anyone else who is caring for your child which signs are his favorites. This can avoid some tearful moments when Grandma or Aunt Maude is babysitting. If your child has gotten used to requesting milk or more cereal through signing, it’s frustrating when the adult he’s trying to communicate with doesn’t understand him. This also gives friends and family members a wonderful way of connecting and bonding with your child.

Start with signs related to things your baby is already interested in. Of course babies will naturally be drawn to learning signs that represent the things in their lives they’re already interested in. Mom, Dad, milk, more, dog and cat often top the list. When choosing which signs to introduce, take your cues from your baby. If he regularly has two cups of milk at lunch time, the sign for more is probably a great one for him to know. If he loves cuddling and playing with Huck, the family dog, the sign for dog will help him communicate his love for his playmate.
Talk, talk, talk with your child too. Signing is a great way to expand your child’s ability to communicate with you, but signing should always be accompanied by talking. By speaking your thought as you sign, you help your child develop important whole language skills. Knowing both the word and the sign for things will help him easily transition from non-verbal to verbal communication.

10 Tips for Avoiding Spring Allergies

With Spring, we welcome warmer weather and more opportunities to play outdoors. Spring also is a time when many children and adults feel the effects of allergies. Allergens can be in the home too.
Most people don’t realize that their home is probably making them sick,  says Robin Wilson, founder and CEO of Robin Wilson Home in New York City and an ambassador to The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, but there are simple solutions to help eliminate the “wheezes and sneezes.”
Here are her tips for help contain some of the sources of allergy suffering:
1. For allergy and asthma sufferers, make sure and use hypoallergenic pillows and anti-allergen or hypoallergenic pillow cases and covers. Wash your pillow case once a week, your pillow protector at least once a month and wash your pillow at least twice a year. Replace pillows every three years
2.  Don’t use a vinyl shower curtain because it holds mold more easily and off gases. Use a nylon curtain instead. It’s also less expensive.
3. Use non-VOC paints which won’t off gas, leave an obnoxious paint odor and stir up asthma or allergies. It looks just as good on the wall as regular paint.
4. Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting. Tile and hardwood floors are a much better choice, but must be vacuumed or cleaned on a regular basis to eliminate dirt and dust. Shake out and vacuum area rugs on a regular basis as well. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
5. Watch for mold in the dishwasher and refrigerator pan which can build up quickly in the kitchen.
6. One of the biggest trends today is eco-friendly cabinetry because it has no formaldehyde adhesives and is made with low VOC stains.  Consider frameless cabinets which won’t collect as much dust.
7. Use slip covers on sofas and chairs which can be washed regularly to eliminate dirt and dust.
8. Keep pets out of the bedroom, and bathe them often to reduce the dander.
9. Freeze stuffed toys for 24 hours to kill dust mites and other bacteria that may have built up.
10. Keep windows closed at night so pollen from outdoors don’t get in and settle on surfaces.
Following these tips should help minimize the sneeze attacks this Spring.

Eco-Friday REVIEW: BlueAir ‘Sense’ air purifier for baby’s nursery

I am a big believer in minimalist home design and having as little furniture in the house as possible, partially because it limits the amount of surfaces that can accumulate in-home allergens.  Also, I live in a designated “Tree City” which means my town is full of very old historic trees that are great to look and live around but make for a horrible Fall and Spring allergy season when tree pollen becomes a problem.
I have used in-home air purifiers to also limit the irritants that trigger allergies.  Everyone in my home suffers from  allergies, unfortunately.
Given my family’s history with allergies, I was elated to be sent a unit and get an opportunity to test out BlueAir‘s innovative and award-winning air purifier “Sense.”  (retail: $450). Sense filters the air and has an ion particle-charging process that is said to remove 99.97% of harmful airborne pollutants from the room faster.  I tested it out in different sized rooms in my home.
Controls
I could control the level of filtration with a wave of my hand over the black motion-sensor control top. That was neat! With other systems, you may forget when it is time to change the filter, but this unit has a red alert that you can’t miss when passing by. To change, I will need to flip it on its side and remove the filter and change it every 6 months.

Eco-Friendly
It’s also eco-friendly and is built with 100% recyclable materials and the makers say it uses less energy than a light bulb to run. With a family of five, our energy bill can get up there so knowing this unit won’t add too much to that cost was great!
Design
It comes in an assortment of soft colors (white, brown, pink, blue, gray) to match any room or baby’s nursery design.  The feet is soft so it won’t damage the hardwood floors in my home. I also loved the fact that the system looked attractive and would not stand out in the room but was attractive and blended in perfectly. I’ve read on the manufacturer’s website that the wraparound grill design also helps create 90% open area to maximize airflow. Aaaah! Perfect.
Maneuverability of the Unit
It was easy to carry from room to room because of the handles on the side. It wasn’t too heavy to lift either. My 10 and 12 year old could lift it and help me move it from room to room.
Does it work?

To me, each room the unit was in felt cleaner and even smelled cleaner. The kids noticed it too. You could breathe easier in the room and it was less stuffy. You could definitely tell the difference and that’s why after testing it out in different rooms in the house, we decided to leave it permanently in the children’s room.
I know it is hard to tell if a baby is suffering from a little cold or allergies, but one thing parents can do to limit allergens is to use little linen and reduce the amount of stuffed animals just sitting around. If you must use them, regularly clean them and put the stuffed animals in the freezer to kill bacteria and dust mites. The other thing they can do is have an air purifier unit like BlueAir‘s The Sense in their baby’s nursery.
The Price
The unit costs $450 which is lower than this brand’s older and previolusly models but is in the middle range of other units of this quality  that also claim to purify, clean and circulate air in a 150 sq ft room 5 times per hour. The replacement filters run about $100 and I wish that price would come down a bit because that can be a bit hefty twice a year cost. It’s a good investment if you have allergy sufferers in your home. You cannot put a price on their comfort.
