The first ever photo of a pregnant bird with a visible baby bump while in flight has emerged and is making its way virally through scientific & environmental blogs & journals.
The image was captured on December 22, 2013 by researchers in a boat in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Réunion, the only breeding site of the critically endangered Mascarene petrel.
To lure some of the flock to their location for observation, the team threw some fish and bait overboard. They managed to lure 33 birds, 12 of which they photographed including this expecting mama bird.
Scienttists wrote in the bulletin of the British Ornithologists’ Club that the image is the first document of any bird flying while obviously bearing an egg.
