Prescription Drug Abuse and Moms: We Still Need to Have a Serious Conversation

prescription drugs

Very recent reports indicating that rock legend Prince who died recently may have succumbed to addition to prescription pain killers. In 2012, I penned an article in The Washington Times discussing the dangers of prescription drug abuse for children, moms and even pregnant women and their fetuses. It was later published in an educational book for 7th to 10th that compiled various articles on drug abuse. Here is an excerpt:

Even before children enter their teens, the modern world insistence on medicating children for attention deficit disorder and other psychological disorders has led to children developing a dependency on sedative type drugs.

Among 12th graders, in 2005, 9.5% reported past-year non-medical use of Vicodin, and 5.5% reported past-year non-medical use of OxyContin, according to the NIH Substance Abuse Study.

Sadly, women in particular are vulnerable.

The then director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH, Nora D. Volkow, M.D., testified in 2006 before The Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources Committee on Government Reform in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Prescription drug abuse must also be carefully tracked among women because of their combined vulnerabilities,” she said. “First, women are more likely than men to suffer from depression, anxiety, trauma, and victimization, all of which frequently appear with substance abuse in the form of co-morbidities.”

Volkow added that “girls and women report using drugs to cope with stressful situations in their lives” and that “studies suggest that women are significantly more likely than men to be prescribed an abusable drug, particularly in the form of narcotics and anti-anxiety medications.”

It is an issue even among pregnant women. A study published in theAmerican Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, around half of all moms-to-be now take at least one medication.

Often times, society paints drug abuse as a problem of the poor, but in fact, affluent and middle-income women and college students are among the most prevalent abusers of prescription drugs.

A 2009 news report expressed surprise that well-to-do housewives and college students were the leading abusers of prescription drugs. It quotedFresno County Coroner Dr. David Hadden who noted that “the ‘it’ pills arehyrdrocodone, which include vicodin and norco, morphine, and now the most popular pain pill of choice, OxyContin” and pointed out that many of the 81 people who died that year “had a cocktail of drugs in their system when they died, like mixing painkillers, with cocaine and methamphetamine, or sedatives and alcohol.”

Because of the demand, prescription drugs on the black market are expensive. On the street, one pill can costs as high as $40 to $50.

The issue is certainly not new. A 1973 study in the Journal of Drug Education spoke about how middle-class housewives were physician shopping to get one that would prescribe drugs.

Viral: Woman Delivers Her Own 10lb Baby Driving Down Highway, Husband Films on Go-Pro

tdy_baby_couple_150719

A Houston woman was being driven by her husband down Beltway 9 to the Bay Area Birth Center in Pasadena, TX and was heavily in labor. That kid, their third, was not interested in waiting out the 45 minute drive.

In the middle of the highway, Lesia Pettijohn birthed a 10 pound baby while her husband, Jonathan Pettijohn,  drove…oh and recorded the entire thing on his Go-Pro. This happened in 2015 and this video has been seen by many and shared on several platforms. The couple made the rounds on local and national television after the video went viral on YouTube.  To this day, many people do not believe it was real.

As for why they posted it on YouTube, Lesia told the TODAY show, “It was mainly just for family and friends, and it just took off. I was really surprised.”

“There are all sorts of reactions. You’ve got people praising us, people trash talking and all sorts of things,” Jon said regarding the response to the video. “We’re just happy we’ve got a son. We really don’t care what people on the Internet say.”

Rich Babies of Instagram is a Thing Now

richkidsig

So if Rich Kids of Instagram and Rich Kids of Snapchat wasn’t obnoxious enough, people are seriously posting photos of their babies with stacks and stacks of cash, expensive handbags, and jewelry; or with them sitting in luxurious mini cars.

Apparently, it’s not that new and has been going on for a while. They even have a hashtag, #RichKidsOfInstagram, and now there is an account dedicated to reposting the most luxe, extravagant and over-the-top pics.

Woweee! I shouldn’t judge. To each his own, but this glorification of wealth is bound to breed entitled, spoiled, teens and then adults but whatev, not my problem.

Check out some of the more popular photos. See photo sources in links below the last photo.

‘The Real”s Jeannie Mai Didn’t Want Kids but is Considering Freezing Her Eggs Just in Case…

jeannie mai the real infertility

Another celebrity is publicly sharing plans to freeze her eggs.

Tune in to Tuesday, May 2nd’s edition of The Real. The married but childless show co-host Jeannie Mai will admit that she is thinking about freezing her eggs. The 37-year old had previously decided that she and her husband would not be having children, but Mai realizes that if she changes her mind, it might be too late.

” I know I’m not getting any younger and I know if I was going to have a kid, I should decide now, today, 5 minutes ago,” Mai retorts.

During the show, Tamar Braxton-Herbert chimes in to support. She reminds the audience that she and her husband Vince Herbert had difficulty conceiving and had undergone fertility treatment before welcoming son, Logan, in 2013.

“I went through IVF and I will definitely hold your hand while you go through this process because, you know, you don’t know what to expect,” she says in the video teaser of the show.  “You don’t know what’s happening with your body and there are some changes that’s going to happen with your body, but you just have to know that they’re not permanent changes, okay.”

We previously blogged that Naomi Campbell, Brandy and Sofia Vergara had also publicly shared plans to possibly freeze their eggs.

Chic Cool Ways to Wear ‘Mom Jeans’

mom jeans

A few years back, people were ripping on the president of the United States for wearing “mom jeans.” It was hilarious until I stopped and paid attention to how jeans that mothers wear have gotten such a bad rap.

But it is true that after a baby, a c-section, a few stubborn added pounds that refuse to go away, a good pair of high-waisted comfortable pair of Lee jeans are a safe bet! It’s too bad that moms have a reputation for wearing jeans that fit and are worn around our waist. It’s a shame indeed. But we have a chance to redeem ourselves, moms.

We can be cool and hip too. * I do realize how un-cool and un-hip that sounds. * All jokes aside these tips rock! Check em out!
