Lucy Liu Welcomes first Child via Gestational Carrier

lucy liu

I was just commenting how Lucy Liu is a great advocate for animals and a dog lover the other day. I was also wondering if she was like her Charlies’ Angel co-star Cameron Diaz, who has proclaimed in the past that she never wanted to have kids.

Well, Liu confirmed yesterday, Thursday, August 27, that she is a proud new mom to a son that she welcomed via gestational carrier.

“Introducing the new little man in my life, my son Rockwell Lloyd Liu,” the Elementary star, who had not previously revealed that she was expecting a child via surrogate, wrote in an Instagram photo “In ❤!”

Liu’s rep confirmed the happy news to Entertainment Tonight, adding, “Mom and baby are healthy and happy!”

This is Liu’s first child and it looks like she will be a solo parent.

Congrats to her!!

12 Books to Help Kids Get Ready for School

12 books

As children head back to school, smaller kids heading to Kindergarten for the first time may be feeling anxiety. To get them ready for the moment, consider reading one or more of these books. They are heartwarming tales about little ones who are nervous about going to school for the first time but who overcome their fears.

cupcake-jones1

One of my faves is Princess Cupcake Jones Won’t Go to School by Ylleya Fields and illustrated by Michael LaDuca.

It is a very nice storybook tale about a young princess who comes up with a laundry list of tricks to avoid going to school the first day.

None work, but by the end she realizes quickly that school wouldn’t be bad after all. The illustrations are modern and colorful and bring Fields story to life. Personally, it reminds me of my 7-year old daughter who had to start a new school mid year recently and was also nervous about doing so.

Like Cupcake Jones in this book, my daughter too made friends on the first day and quickly adapted.

Here are eleven other books to consider nabbing for your kids or gifting to a child you know in your life who is heading to school for the first time this year:

Pediatricians: Give Babies Peanuts before 1yo to Avoid extreme Peanut Allergy

peanuts baby getty

Seems like homeopathy is right after all.

Next week, the American Academy of Pediatrics will release a statement online advising that before a child turns one-year old, his parents should give him a peanut product in order to reduce his chances of developing extreme peanut allergies

The advice comes in a consensus statement that the American Academy of Pediatrics helped prepare and endorsed in June along with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and several foreign allergy groups.

The recommendations are meant to be interim guidance while the National Institute of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology develop more extensive guidelines.

The academy will release the statement online Monday in the journal Paediatrics.

Children who have skin reactions to eating eggs or have a severe eczema skin rash are suspected of having food allergies, and recommended to get allergy tests between 4 months and 11 months of age.

What Really Happens when a Woman Takes Maternity Leave at a Tech Company with Unlimited Leave

hands-woman-girl-silver-large

[Disclosure: Bellyitch is an Affiliate to Amazon.com.]

You guys (including us) who have been fawning over all these tech companies’ generous parental and maternity leave policies should sit up and read Julie Cheiffetz story about how she was treated when she had cancer and a baby while working at Amazon.

The Executive Editor at Harper Collins wrote about her experience in a recent post on Medium.

In “I Had a Baby and Cancer When I Worked at Amazon. This Is My Story,” Cheiffetz explains what many fear about all these hyped up extended year-long liberal leave policies in the press these days: that people who take them cannot be guarantee they won’t be dinged by taking time off.

Here is the most excerpt to Cheiffetz’ story:

After a five-month leave, I was nervous and excited to return to work, and I showed up that first day back with a big smile and a phone full of baby pictures to share. I figured I’d catch up with folks and get a high-level update on how the business was doing, since the strategy had evolved from the time I was hired. Here’s what happened instead: I was taken to lunch by a woman I barely knew. Over Cobb salad she calmly explained that all but one of my direct reports — the people I had hired — were now reporting to her. In the months that followed, I was placed on a dubious performance improvement plan, or PIP, a signal at Amazon that your employment is at risk. Not long after that I resigned.

The truth is, I’ve moved on. I’m healthy. I have a great job doing work I love. There’s no question Amazon is an incredible company. I met some of the strongest, most brilliant women of my career there. Unfortunately, many of those women have left. And the voices commenting on the New York Timespiece so far have been predominantly male leaders of male-dominated teams.

Jeff: You asked for direct feedback. Women power your retail engine. They buy diapers. They buy books. They buy socks for their husbands on Prime. On behalf of all the people who want to speak up but can’t: Please, make Amazon a more hospitable place for women and parents. Reevaluate your parental leave policies. You can’t claim to be a data-driven company and not release more specific numbers on how many women and people of color apply, get hired and promoted, and stay on as employees. In the absence of meaningful public data — especially retention data — all we have are stories. This is mine.

And alas, the struggle for moms in the corporate culture continue.

We are all very happy to hear that this woman triumphed over cancer and is in a better place now, but yeah, don’t tell us everything will be rosy and not think we won’t speak up when things don’t go according to plan.

Kudos to Cheiffetz!
