Celeb moms went bold in sheer at the 2015 Met Gala

Tonight in New York city was one of the fashion industry’s biggest nights. Stars came out to full glitz and glamour to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute‘s fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “China: Through The Looking Glass.”
In its honor, celebrities are asked to come dressed to the event euphemistically known as the Met Gala (or Met Ball) outfitted in custom designer originals that reflect the theme of the exhibit.
It was a virtual reunion of sorts for us to eye the various celebrity women we’ve featured in Bellyitch in the past walk the red carpet in what is supposed to be the boldest fashion event for the year.
Controversial and much-watched and talked about Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer co-chaired this year’s Met Gala.
The proceeds from the event which long time Vogue editor Anna Wintour produces benefit the Costume Institute. This year the co- chairs were Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer and Wendi Murdoch.
As for the fashion, unfortunately, many played it safe and though looking amazing, were underwhelming in their interpretation of the exhibit. I saw a lot embroidered overlays on dresses and noticed that a lot of ladies selected Chinese designers. Nice.
There were some wow-worthy moments and I noticed a theme with all the mega divas rocking the sheer panel trend.
Beyonce Knowles Carter entered last on the red carpet like the queen of the ball. She stunned in a jewel and beaded embellished ultra sheer form fitting Givenchy dress which was excellently executed and pulled off because she has a much thinner frame now. She’s lost some of her signature curves for a minute I see. The high pony tail is interesting and bold risk. The winged eye liner is a nod to the theme. Jay Z was nice arm candy in his dapper tux.

Not to be outdone, Jennifer Lopez too showed off her fabulous body in a sheer nude Atelier Versace  dress with red sequins overlay, paired with a crimson clutch covered in Swarvoski crystals. It was signature J.Lo.
Kim Kardashian went sheer too in this fabulous well-designed custom Roberto Cavalli dress that hugged her curves with strategically placed beaded and jeweled embroider overlay and an elaborate feathered train. It was very eye-catching and drool worthy indeed.  Hubby Kanye West looked nice too.

Sarah Jessica Parker did weave in the theme by topping her black Asian-inspired kimono dress she designed for H&M with a Philip Treacy head piece. Of course she wore her SJP Collection on her feet while toting a cute Fendi clutch (not seen in photo). Her jewels were by Jennifer Fisher, Cindy Chao, and Fred Leighton.

New mom Olivia Wilde also portrayed the theme in Prada with a muted silver Prada clutch, gloves and head band and Solange Azagury-Partridge earrings.

Sienna Miller was giving me Asian page boy in this Thakoon fringed tuxedo pants set. I love how that jacket opens in the front and the tassel earrings and belt really set off this look. She carried a matching red Rauwolf clutch in hand.

Emily Blunt channeled her inner geisha in Prada‘s take on the kimono. She went with Anna Hu earnings and a midnight blue Prada clutch.

Kate Hudson‘s interpretation of Chinese design was exquisitely done by Michael Kors in this custom gown that featured intricate gold leafing layered over the bodice of the dress. The top bun completes this look for me. Gorg!  Slay!

I didn’t really see Chinese aesthetic in this Zac Posen gown that Katie Holmes wore but I was convinced by the dramatic bob hair with the bangs. Nice.

Kerry Washington brought in spring in this very full asymmetric Prada ball gown that she creatively paired with green satin pumps and clutch, while rocking fine Harry Winston jewels. I could see the artwork of a Chinese relief painting in the embroidered embellishments in the train.

Claire Danes too didn’t really do the theme thing but she did look nice in this forest green black leather belted Valentino dress that she wore with Fred Leighton jewels. She managed to bring in edgy with the dark lips.

I could appreciate designer Roland Mouret‘s silhouette and handiwork on this dress Maggie Gyllenhaal is outfitted in. It reminds me of a work of abstract art. She carried a gold Palais Royal clutch.

We had a baby on board tonight as Jaime King worked the red carpet in radiant orange. She accented the look in red custom Jason Wu clutch and heels and dripped in Forevermark diamonds.

Miranda Kerr pulled off the modern Chinese millennial businesswoman in this black and silver Louis Vuitton mini dress. I think the middle of the head parted slick back hair works great with this look.

Fellow model Adriana Lima looked like a porcelain China doll in this custom Marc Jacobs dress, accented with Chopard jewelry, and a Judith Leiber clutch.

Another top model Lily Aldridge‘s  Carolina Herrera dress looked like water flowing to me and I absolutely loved it. One of my favorites of the night. The quirky fish clutch was a nice eclectic added touch. See the visual effect comes through totally.

More embroidered overlay in this gorgeous custom  Louis Vuitton dress that actress Jennifer Connelly wore, paired with  Jessica McCormack jewelry.

Wow! Uma Thurman is statuesque and striking in this white Versace dress that gives off a Grecian feel to me. Wrong country but still a beautiful look Oscar worthy not Met ball edgy enough.

As usual, Solange  Knowles pushed the envelope and wasn’t afraid of going bold and over the top in this Giles Deacon creation that resembles a Chinese fan. Well played.

As she always does, Ivanka Trump looked stunning in Oscar de la Renta and Cindy Chao jewels. It’s classic Ivanka and the extra long train with the white block in the train is the “extra”  for the Met Gala.

I really liked Alicia Keys  in this playful Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble. It’s a mix of structured on top with that sharp fitted jacket and bustier juxtaposed with feminine daintiness on the bottom with the ballerina tulle but it works.

Reese Witherspoon was sophisticated bombshell in ruby red Jason Wu. A beautiful yet safe and non-newsworthy choice.

The ‘Dad Bod’ physique for men is trending

Your not-that-chiseled-chested husband or boyfriend is going to love this trend.  Apparently the “dad bod” is a new thing. There’s mom jeans and now there’s Dad Bod!
The term is defined in New York Time‘s The Cut blog as “physique characterized by undefined muscles beneath a light layer of flab, usually topped off with a beer belly.”
It’s that guy who goes to the gym regularly but still loves to drink beer and eat pizza on the weekend.
When I think of a pop culture representation of the dad bod I think of Adam Sandler or  the character Carrie Bradshaw‘s love interest in Sex and the City Aden.
There’s research behind it too. Last year, a survey found that 72% of British women prefer a man with a little love handle over a man with rock hard body.

Who could imagine!

Kate Middleton and Prince William announce their daughter’s name

The new princess has a name!
A Kensington Palace spokesperson confirmed Monday that Kate Middleton and Prince William have decided to name their second child, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Charlotte was a name on top of the list that royal baby watchers anticipated. Bookies and gamblers were exchanging millions betting on names and Charlotte was the leading contender too among betters.
It’s quite endearing that the new baby will also carry the first name her maternal grandmother she will never meet, the late Princess Diana.
So sweet!

10 reasons why you shouldn’t be mean to your children

Bellyitch rewind
Developmental specialists, medical professionals and psychological researchers alike have dedicated decades of energy and resources to exploring the mechanics of parenting. Diana Blumberg Baumrind, a clinical and developmental psychologist, is one of those researchers. Her studies led her to categorize parenting into four different styles; authoritarian, permissive, authoritative and uninvolved.
Theses have been criticized and accepted by many in the world of child psychology. An authoritative parent is firm and sets limits, but is not rigid. The authoritative parent is willing to make exceptions when appropriate, respond to certain demands of the child, but does not overindulge in them.
Permissive parents allow their children to dominate the household, while authoritarian parents are excessively strict and rigid in their thinking and uninvolved parents are exactly how they sound – uninvolved in their children’s lives. While all different types of parenting styles may yield different outcomes, here are 10 reasons why being a mean parent doesn’t work.
  1. Fear – A driving factor of mean parenting is fear. Mean parents may use guilt-inducing strategies or physical force to instill a sense of fear in their children. A healthy dose of fear is appropriate at times and may even be necessary under certain circumstances. If your primary approach to parenting involves using fear as a tool, however, it can have a negative developmental impact.
  2. Intimidation – Using fear to control a child’s behavior or humiliation to intimidate him into good behavior may work in the short term, but can have far-reaching implications.  An intimidated child will usually embrace their role within the family as a victim and allow themselves to be victimized throughout adulthood, or rebel against it to become overly aggressive to compensate for the loss of power during their formative years.
  3. Lack of Coping Skills – Many times mean parenting tactics don’t allow for children to express less than desirable emotions. If a child is crying and the parent cannot appease them quickly, they may use a loud or aggressive voice, demanding the child to stop. Unfortunately, this way of stifling emotions teaches children it is not okay to be upset or disappointed and, in turn, they are not shown ways to care for someone else without using forceful strategies.
  4. Depression – In some cases, a mean parent might be struggling with a lack of emotional control or anger management issues. People who are incapable of handling conflict or have a constant need to control may become very emotionally and mentally distressed when they’re faced with a conflict or loss of control. Inadvertently modeling this behavior can teach your children to mimic it, affecting their own ability to handle negative emotions as they mature.
  5. Emotional Instability – Being raised in an emotionally tumultuous or explosive environment can generate a lack of emotional stability in children. Anxiety, hypersensitivity and hyperactivity are all conditions that can afflict kids who are constantly exposed to aggressive or frightening behavior from their parents.
  6. Lack of Respect – While a child may fear the wrath of an angry parent, fear and respect are not always synonymous. Children of mean parents can grow into young adults who lack respect for authority or view a lack of authority in others as a weakness. They may also lack respect for their own boundaries, thus paving the way for other destructive behavior, both physically and emotionally. This lack of respect for others and for themselves may manifest by the child engaging in harmful activities and aggressive or rebellious behavior, according to researchers at the University of New Hampshire.
  7.  Lack of Compassion – When a child is taught that crying or expressing frustration or disappointment is wrong, they are indirectly shown a lack of compassion. This will make it difficult for them to show compassion to others as well.
  8. Low Self-esteem – Fear can crush a child’s sense of security. Lack of emotional expression can suffocate her creativity. Controlling behavior can suppress his autonomy. When a child’s emotional development is arrested it restricts the love and compassion a child will have for herself. Parenting expert Dr. Laura Markham asserts that the kids of overly authoritarian parents will often use the same tactics to shame, intimidate and bully their inner being, lowering or destroying their self-esteem.
  9. Bullies or Aggressive Demeanor – Children are like sponges. They absorb everything around them, negativity included. If all they are shown is negative or mean behavior, they are likely to mirror their home life in social settings. Bullying is a way of expressing internal frustration. Kids typically don’t bully other children or exude an aggressive demeanor if they feel loved, cared for and accepted as they are.
  10. Abusive Relationships – Because being bullied or exposed to aggressive parenting styles shapes the way your child views the world, it can prompt her to seek out that same behavior in her adult relationships. When anger and fear are commonplace throughout the formative years, they become the baseline for normalcy in a child’s mind. If you want your child to be a reflection of love and kindness, take some time to evaluate your own relationship with them.

Band-Aid spokesperson Tamera Mowry- Housley dishes on her pregnancy while promoting brand (VIDEO)

Second time mom-to-be Tamera Mowry-Housley has been making the rounds promoting Band Aid as spokesperson for the brand and she stopped by Access Hollywood and FOX and Friends recently.
During the Access Hollywood interview, the co-host of FOX’s daytime talk show The Real said she popped a lot faster for her second pregnancy compared to the last one.
“I was trying to hide it and you know the traditional way is to not tell people that you are pregnant until your 12th week and I looked like I was 6 months pregnant already,”  she joked.
The Sister, Sister alum also talked about being more exhausted being pregnant while having a toddler at home.
“No one told me about this, being pregnant and having a toddler is a whole other thing,” she shared but also expressed excitement about having to fill her heart with love for a new baby. “I loved him so much so how do you find enough love to love the other one?”

Get the super cute and affordable ASOS Placed Stripe and Colour Block Bodycon dress Tamera rocked at the FOX and Friends interview for just $81.00!

Mowry-Housley, who recently starred in a reality TV show, Tia and Tamera, with her sister Tia Mowry-Hardrict on the now defunct Style Network,  says  she does have a plan to deal with sibling jealousy. She intends to give her son Aden John Tanner with hubby FOX news correspondent Adam Housley a gift from his baby sister. That gesture, she hopes, will help him better adjust to having a new baby in the house.

What to wear to a cocktail party (A PHOTO PRIMER)

I am helping my husband plan his 11th annual reunion weekend events for the high school he attended at his native Trinidad and Tobago. It’s two week aways and in addition to hustling with last minute preparations, I am also scrambling to decide what to wear.
We’ve gotten a few requests from those attending who are from abroad and are not familiar with what cocktail attire entails in the States.
Generally, cocktail parties are classified as semi-formal evening or late afternoon events. During them, guests enjoy cocktail beverages, wine, beer and soft drinks and nosh on appetizers. Some include light to lavish buffets or food stations.
Cocktail parties are also great for socializing and networking. Music, if played, is usually kept down and in the background so guests can hear each other speaking.
Since you never get another chance to make a first impression, you will want to dress dress to impress.
Women can experiment with different styles, colors and lengths of dresses. Since it’s usually attended by the professional crowd, it’s a good idea to not show too much skin.
Make up can be glam but not over the top and the same with the hair. Heels are preferable and a clutch and nice jewelry or other accessories will top off the look.
A popular color is black. It is slimming and safe and there is a variety of the LBD (little black dress) that can accommodate all body types and shapes.
For men, their clothing should be kept simple, but sharp looking. Fellahs,  you will want to turn heads as you walk in the room so looking polished helps.
A crisp white dress shirt or other light trendy color with or without a tie in a up-to-date pattern or material works. A dressy sports coat will be in order, especially if you opt against wearing a tie.
Trousers or even khakis will do.  Shoes should be lace-up or loafer style but polished and worn with dark socks to match…unless you are especially fashionable and trendy and can pull off other sock colors.
It can be a tricky thing determining what to wear for a cocktail party but it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

I think Co Co Chanel said that but if she didn’t she should have! ha!

Can’t wait!

Study: Daily TV watching contributes to obesity in kindergarteners

Even a little bit of television viewing goes a long way to potentially hurt a child’s health, according to new research.
Kindergartners and first-graders who watched even an hour of television a day were more likely to be overweight or obese, according to new research presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in San Diego.
The research builds on existing studies that have shown a direct link between sedentary behavior and obesity for children and adults.
Earlier studies have shown the more TV that people watch, the more likely they are to gain weight.
Children who have televisions in their room are also more likely to be overweight or obese, research suggests. TV habits made early on can lead to a lifetime of weight problems.
