DC’s infant mortality rate is among highest and lowest worldwide depending on zipcode

During the uprisings in Baltimore in recent days, those from the wealthy parts of that city said they could not relate to the struggles of Baltimore City residents protesting in the streets.

They live in different worlds though their located minutes apart.

Similarly, down the street in Washington, DC, children born in its poorest section, Ward 8, are about 10 times more likely to die than those born in the wealthiest area.

Those findings can be found in Save the Children’s 16th annual Mothers’ Index assesses the well-being of mothers and children in 179 countries showing where they fare best and where they face the greatest hardships.

When comparing world capitals, Washington DC ranked among the highest in infant mortality rate compared to other capital cities in wealthy countries, mainly because there is a high birth rate in the poorest parts of the city and a high infant mortality rate.

But the richest Wards  rank among the world cities with the lowest infant mortality rate.

Ward 3 had just 1.2 deaths per 1,000 in 2012, ranked among cities like Tokyo and Stockholm, Meanwhile, the birth rate in Ward 8 is 24 babies died in 2012 compared to only one in Ward 8.

This shocking conclusion is why this video released by Save The Children to bring awareness to the disparity even locally is on point. WATCH!

Met Gala After Parties- Celeb Moms out Late

After the party is the after party.

Rather than head home following the glamorous celeb-studded Met Gala, some of the celeb moms we’ve followed in the past headed out to the various after parties.

Actress Kerry Washington was spotted at the official “China: Through The Looking Glass” Costume Institute Benefit Gala” After Party on May 4, 2015 at The Standard Hotel in New York City

Katie Holmes and Zac Posen posed up at the Michael Kors and iTunes After Party at The Mark Hotel on May 4, 2015 in New York City.

Solange Knowles was there too and she didn’t go home to change like the others. Last year around this time, everyone was talking about the infamous elevator ride fight video.

Over 200 of kidnapped Boko Haram girls returned pregnant

About 214 women rescued from Islamist Boko Haram militants in north-east Nigeria are pregnant, according to local media citing the Chief of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). The Nigerian military said it freed nearly 700 women last week.

“Already, many of them are undergoing screening for various diseases, infections including HIV/AIDS and about 214 of those already screened were discovered to be at various stages of pregnancies, some visibly pregnant and some just tested pregnant; but we are supporting all of them with various levels of care to stabilize them,” said UNFPA Nigeria executive director Babatunde Oshotimehin speaking in Lagos.

“Some of the children that were freed along with the women, it was discovered, were born in the forest and had never been out in the open until their release by the Nigerian Army,” Osotimehin said.

Trending: The High Waisted Jeans, A variation of the mom jeans?

So fashion from the 1970s era is trending this Spring.
Ordinarily, I would embrace it because I liked the high waisted jeans that was fashionable several seasons ago. It’s not a style of pant everyone can pull off. Still, back then (and I think now) I thought it was a great way for moms who want to hide a tummy bulge to be current and trendy because the high waist compresses that area.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
Wearing high waisted jeans with a crop top is how the young girls are rocking the trend. But the over 30 set should stick with a nice collared shirt to pair them with.
Also, be careful. If overdone with too many 70s inspired pieces and accessories would have you can looking  like a cliche’d Halloween hippie costume cliche.
Also, that high waist is eerily similar in cut to the dreaded “mom jeans.” aaaaah!  Anyway, I’m non-committal and still thinking about investing in a decent pair.
What do you think? Would you rock the high waisted jeans mamas?!

Lisa Ling’s 2-year old daughter speaks 3 languages already

Journalist Lisa Ling just wrapped taping of her CNN globe-trotting show This is Life and in between that and balancing other projects, she managed to teach her daughter Jett three languages! Wowza!
She revealed that wonderful tidbit during a recent interview with Celebrity Baby Scoop.
“Jett is so smart it’s scary,”The View alum says of her 2-year old. “She loves books.”
That explains why a 2-year old is multi-lingual already.

Ling, who recently revealed that she was diagnosed with ADD as an adult, says motherhood has expanded the depth of her work.

“I have always focused on girl empowerment, but now I really focus on topics I can be a voice for that help the equality of women,” Lisa says.

Nice.

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week: 15 Last Minute Ideas Sites

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. If you haven’t already figured out what to get for your child’s teacher yet, here are 15 websites and links with ideas and suggestions to get you started!  But first, do check out the ideas we shared with you in our Holiday gift guide post as many of those were under $10!
Gifts to Make for Teachers
When you make gifts for your child’s teachers you will be putting a little bit of yourself into each gift.  It will be personalized for her and not something that she will receive from 10 other students.  Try to make the gifts useful, like making her a grocery bag.  She would think of you every time she used the bag to carry home groceries.  Think how many years it would last.  Now that many teachers are getting an iPad and other types of tablets, they might need to have a sleeve to protect it.  These ideas and others can be found in these five blog posts.
Gifts to Buy for Teachers
Sometimes teachers receive a lot of gifts that they can’t really use.  How many candles do you really need?  When asked, teachers will most likely say that it’s the thought that counts, but if they are honest they would tell you that gift cards are always appreciated.  These five blog entries share ideas for gifts using store bought items put together in a creative way.
Ideas on a Budget In this economy, the budget to celebrate might be on the small side.  You can find things to do for the teachers that will pamper them without breaking the bank.  Instead of catering a lunch in, see if you can get parents to bring in a covered dish.  For other ideas on how to celebrate teacher appreciation week on budget check out these five blog articles.
Good Luck!
