Pi Day is coming: 100 Pie recipes for families

March 14, Saturday is Pi Day and for the first time it is actually the first 5 numbers that represent the numerical value of pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter: 3.14.15.

(if you use the American way of writing dates).

Pi day is also an annual opportunity for math geeks, including nerdy parents all around, to make and eat pie with their family and friends!

We found from recipe curators over at our partners at Foodie over 100 pie recipes – from sweet, to pizza to fruit – for every taste and palette to consider making this Saturday!

Good luck!

Bump Watch: Kate Middleton tours art gallery in trendy dalmatian print coat

The Duchess of Cambridge rocked a Hobbs Dalmatian print coat she’s worn before while touring the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery yesterday, March 11, in Margate, England. I loved the fact she had her hair pulled back into a messy pony tail since wispy loose messy hair is trending these days.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

The former Kate Middleton was in her fave black Stuart Weitzman Power pumps and carried a quaint  Mulberry clutch.  I’m really feeling the dalmation print as it is whimsical and fun!

hmmm…..

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Trending: Hipster eyeglasses are still a thing

Trend watchers may have noticed that wearing eyeglasses is fashionable again.
Thank hipsters and the new popular geek culture for making it cool a few years ago to skip laser surgery and contact lenses and embrace the four-eye look again.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
Some of the celeb moms we’ve regularly featured here like Reese WitherspoonCourtney Cox and Zoe Saldana have been spotted out and about and on red carpets in eyeglasses. Mom-to-be Zoe Deschanel looked smart and chic in a pair of dark-rimmed glasses recently as well.
Men too are wearing glasses, even though they need them or not, following the moves of the guys who seem to stay one step ahead of all the tech gadgets.  The numbers support the theory, as World News Stand notes,

The prevalence of eyeglasses, like other hipster fads, likely became such a popular trend because of the economic and thrifty value of glasses — especially compared to things like contact lenses and LASIK surgery. Eyeglass sales, according to Euromonitor, are currently at their highest point in the past 15 year

I recently discovered that my perfect 20/20 eyesight is not so perfect anymore. I blame old age. Thus, I had to get an eyeglasses prescription, so it was awesome to learn that they are trending. Perfect! I am accidentally in style! Ha!
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
And this trend is a perfect way for those who want to stay hip and current while pregnant to do so. There is a perfect pair for everyone.

Chelsea Clinton doesn’t take all of Hillary Clinton’s motherhood advice

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has her grandbaby to distract her from email-gate.
In a recent interview with Sky NewsChelsea Clinton says she’s loving watching her mom be a great grandmother to her daughter, Charlotte.
However, Chelsea Clinton says she isn’t taking all of her mom’s baby advice.

“Some of it I take,” Clinton says. “And some of it I sort of smile and say, ‘Thank you’ for. I’m sure this is a common thing with new moms with their mothers.”
The former NBC news special correspondent would not confirm whether her mom planned to run for presidents.
She added “at this moment, she’s more Charlotte’s grandmother than anything else…It’s amazing…watching her read to Charlotte, watching her give Charlotte a bottle, watching her sing to Charlotte.”

10 iphone apps for Stay-at-home moms

Anyone who says that stay-at-home moms don’t work has never stayed at home with a child or managed a busy household. Simply keeping up with everyone’s appointments, day-to-day maintenance, household shopping, and running errands can be a major undertaking. Thankfully, the amazing number of apps available for the iPhone in the App Store include a fair amount that are very useful to today’s harried stay at home mom. These ten are among the most indispensable, and can streamline many of a busy mom’s errands into more manageable feats.

  1. Grocery iQ – Finding the time, and a babysitter, for a leisurely stroll through the grocery store is a luxury that few stay-at-home moms can afford. Because the key to a successful, meltdown-free shopping trip almost always hinges upon your ability to get in and out of the store in record time with your kids in tow, this free app is a lifesaver. Build your shopping list from the comfort of your own home, find coupons for your favorite brands, and streamline the process of grocery shopping.
  2. Errands To-Do List – Juggling the demands of running a household while looking after energetic and often rambunctious children, all without ever forgetting a date, shopping item, or appointment, is a feat beyond even the most unflappable moms. Managing your to-do lists with an app like the free Errands To-Do helps to ensure that you’ll never forget an important item again, as you work through your list and check them off one by one.
  3. Evernote – More often than not, important items occur to harried moms at the least convenient moment and are forgotten by the time she manages to find a second to make a note. With Evernote, you’re able to choose one of several options for recording and documenting your thoughts, ensuring that precious ideas don’t fall through the cracks.
  4. Holdr – Chasing a child around the house with a phone precariously wedged between your ear and shoulder while waiting for a customer service representative to take your call can be one of the most frustrating daily errands that a mom regularly faces. Thanks to Holdr, the days of being forced to stay on hold indefinitely are over. With this free app you can attend to other pressing business during your hold period, and Holdr will call you back as soon as your representative comes on the line.
  5. Mom Maps – When you’re faced with a long summer day or a teacher’s in-service day that keeps students out of school, finding nearby attractions to keep the kids occupied and away from the television can present a challenge. For $2.99 Mom Maps users can pinpoint kid-friendly diversions in the surrounding area, ensuring that they never have to hear cries of “I’m bored!” again.
  6. WebMD – Determining whether your child’s rash is a mild reaction or a sign of something more serious isn’t easy for the average person. Without medical training even the slightest cough can be cause for alarm. Thankfully, applications like WebMD exist to provide on the spot consultations so that you can decide whether a trip to the pediatrician is in order or if they just need a good night’s rest.
  7. Feeding Your Kids – Teaching kids good dietary habits is certainly not easy in today’s over-processed, preservative-packed world. With Habit Changer’s “Feeding Your Kids” app, you can learn how to make small adjustments each day, teaching your children to choose healthier foods for themselves along the way.
  8. Bank of Mom – Tracking kids’ expenses and helping them to manage money is one of the most important lessons that a mother can pass on to her children. The spending habits that your child learns today can very easily determine how financially responsible he will be as an adult. With apps like Bank of Mom, monitoring those habits for later discussion is a snap.
  9. Find My iPhone – Kids aren’t particularly known for their patience, but the number of apps in the App Store designed to keep them occupied are numerous. If you make a habit of handing your iPhone to an antsy child, however, chances are that a forgetful little one will eventually misplace your iPhone. With Find My iPhone you can sign in on another Apple device with your Apple ID to spot your phone on a map, remotely erase all data, or lock the phone until it can be found.
  10. Key Ring Rewards Cards – The days of keeping up with dozens of tiny plastic loyalty and customer rewards cards are over, thanks to apps like the free Key Ring Rewards Cards. Scan and save all of your old cards into your iPhone, look for new loyalty programs to join, and save digital coupons to your cards from inside the app. With this app you’ll be able to cut clutter and organize your memberships, ensuring that you never have to fumble for another card through dozens that look similar again.

Vodafone offers 16 weeks paid maternity leave

Vodafone has introduced a mandatory minimum maternity policy that requires all 30 of its globally operating companies to offer at least 16 weeks of fully paid leave to expectant mothers, even in countries like the US that have no paid leave requirements.
The kicker? For the first six months after returning from leave, women who work at the multinational telecommunications company will receive full pay for 30-hour weeks.
“Too many talented women leave working life because they face a difficult choice between either caring for a newborn baby or maintaining their careers,” said Vittorio Colao, the company’s chief executive.

I call BS on new study suggesting doting parents create narcissistic adults

So, this morning, I have seen many summaries, reports and reiterations of this new study which says helicopter parents layering too much praise on their children will lead to the unleashing of a new generation of narcissistic adults
“The Ohio State University suggests that constant – and perhaps undue – praise for our kids’ tiniest accomplishments, or non-accomplishments, may have the unintended side-effect of creating an over-inflated ego,” Forbes online summarizes.
In other words, telling Johnny too much that he is special is turning him into an egotistical monster that cannot be tolerated when he grows up.
So, the message is to tell your kid he or she is NOT that special after all?
You can read more about the study here but I’m calling BS on this one.
I do NOT think we have a culture where parents are affirming their children and praising and uplifting their children’s natural abilities enough. Rather, it is my opinion from casual observance of parents in my circle and from studying interactions among parents I see everyday that the opposite is occurring.
I see parents comparing their children to other children, demanding more and more from them or not demanding enough and/or simply just accepting their child as they are, faults and all and going with the flow, but not necessarily telling them they are better than other children.
I also note that this generation has pressures that are different that perhaps is the true contributor to narcissism in some youth today.
To me, there seems to be a concerted effort to pinpoint where all the cocky narcissism is coming from in young people in Generation Y and Z today and this study wants us to believe it came from parents.
I think it comes from our social media culture that enables children to be elevated to celebrity status among their friends and followers nationwide, and gives them them the similar type of ego boost that celebrities get from their hero-worshiping fans. Just my thoughts.
Nice try though. What do you think?
