Study: 911 Dust Cloud caused problems in Manhattan baby boys born

Pregnant women living near the World Trade Center here during the 9/11 terror attacks experienced higher-than-normal negative birth outcomes, according to a new study.
The study by Princeton University‘s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs found that these mothers were more likely to give birth prematurely and deliver babies with low birth weights.
Their babies — especially baby boys — were also more likely to be admitted to neonatal intensive care units after birth, according to the study led by the Wilson School’s Janet Currie and Hannes Schwandt.
“Previous research into the health impacts of in utero exposure to the 9/11 dust cloud on birth outcomes has shown little evidence of consistent effects,” said Currie, Henry Putnam Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, director of the economics department and director of the Wilson School’s Center for Health and Wellbeing.

Baby North West breaks celebrity baby modeling record

CR Fashion Book
Tongues are flapping about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s 13-month old daughter North’s solo modeling debut inside the impending 5th issue of CR Fashion Book
The above photo sneak peek at the issue features the cherubic celebrity baby in a soft Chanel sweater, with a mini version of Chanel’s signature quite pursue, complete with its distinctive “C”  insignia.
A designer Karl Lagerfeld quote at the side says, “It’s never too early to care about fashion.”

West has already been inside a fashion spread when she posed with her parents for Vogue.

At the tender age of 2-years old, Jennifer Lopez‘s twins Max and Emme modeled with her for Gucci.

Alessandra Ambrosio‘s then 4-year old daughter, Anja, modeled with her mom for London  Fog in 2012.

But with a solo spread and an earlier age, North West is breaking records here!

Eco Friday: 10 Ways to have a Greener School Year

This year, why not encourage your kids’ school to go greener. Here are some tips from a past blog post on how to do that:
  1. Swap it out. Hold a clothing and school gear swap party with other families in the neighborhood. It’s a great way for the kids to get “new” clothes and backpacks without hurting the planet, plus it saves money. Another great tip was to visit trading sites like ThredUP.com to swap clothes your kids no longer wear for newer duds.
  2. Throw a closet-cleaning party. Clean out closets before going shopping to see what fits, what can be repurposed or what can be donated. Make it a fun activity for the whole family to do together–turn on some music, serve some snacks and have a fashion show!
  3. Put a new twist on something old. Pull out your sewing machine, material stockpile and accessories to re-invent hand-me-downs. It’s a fun and creative activity for the family, saves money and encourages the kids to enjoy recycled clothing.
  4. Extend the life of your crayons. Take crayons from the previous school year, melt them and pour them into molds to create different shaped crayons. Once cooled, you have cool “new” crayons.
  5. Save on textbooks and conserve paper. Buy used text books from students who were previously in your kids’ grades. College students can use textbook renting sites such as Chegg.com, which even plants a tree for each book rented. And if you buy a textbook on Amazon.com, you can sell them back for gift cards to use towards next year’s books!
  6. Plan a supply hunt. Organize a pen, pencil and notebook scavenger hunt around the house–you’d be amazed what you can find in drawers and bags. It’s a fun rainy day project for kids, and a great way to reuse the supplies you’ve already bought.
  7. Give supplies a facelift. You can add some flair to old school supplies that are still useable. Fill an old binder with un-used pages from cast-off notebooks, recover them with sturdy fabric and then break open the craft drawer and let your kids go wild! Last year’s binder becomes a work of art.
  8. Make it a game. Each morning, get out the stopwatch and have everyone race through the house to ensure all lights are off and appliances and electronics are unplugged. This helps save energy, and reduces your electricity bill and burns off excess energy!
  9. Paint the classroom green. Encourage your child’s school administrators to have recycle bins in the schoolyard, classroom and hallways so kids develop the habit early. If your school doesn’t have recycling, bring in your own bins and set up a collection schedule with other parents! If your town is a Recyclebank community, families can take turns collecting bins and share the coupons with the classroom. Many towns supply recycling bins to residents, but if yours doesn’t places like Home Depot and Target sell them.
  10. Form a club. If you have junior high or high school aged kids, ask your school if you can form a “Green Club.” Members can serve as green ambassadors in their respective classrooms, and help raise awareness and implement school-wide eco-friendly actions.

Savannah Guthrie welcomes daughter, Vale

Congratulations to TODAY co-host and legal correspondent Savannah Guthrie on the birth of her daughter, Vale Guthrie Feldman yesterday, Wednesday August 13.

She and her husband Mike Feldman, who only married this past March, welcomed the new addition, which Guthrie tweeted about later:

Matt Lauer told the TODAY show crew that “Vale is an old English word meaning ‘valley by a stream,'” and that “they named her that because she was so calm and serene – until 10 o’clock last night.”

ha!

She also joked about the first photos shared on Twitter above, “The baby is more cheek than head.”

So funny! Congrats!

REVIEW: House of Botori diaper bags are stylish and functional

If you are in the market for a chic, super cute diaper bag in a reasonable price point, we recommend checking out House of Botori.

We sampled the Ginika Tote  in a Swirl Tangerine pattern and found it extremely roomy, stylish and functional. There were numerous pouches and compartments for keeping organized various items in your bag.

The bag comes with a pouch for baby food jar so it doesn’t shatter and is kept safe while traveling. It has a matching diaper bag and was very lightweight which is VERY important because after you add diapers, change of clothes, bottles and other “must have” diaper bag essentials, that bag can get quite heavy.
And the other good thing is the bags are also Eco-Friendly and are made of PVC-free materials.
The entire collection sells from between $59 to $99 and can be found at www.HouseOfBotori.com!

Or you can get it at Amazon.com!

Hayden Panettiere’s pregnancy will be written into ‘Nashville’ storyline

Reports indicate that Hayden Panettiere’s actual pregnancy will be written into the plot of her hit ABC network television show Nashville.  The Heroes actress and her fiance Wladimir Klitschko are expecting their first child together later this year.
Writers will weave a pregnancy into the story line, which as of last season, included Panettiere’s character Juliette Barnes cheating on her boyfriend with the record label head, Jeff Fordham, played by Oliver Hudson. With an unexpected and unplanned baby, Barnes will be dealing with ‘who’s the baby daddy’ drama for sure.
Should be interesting. Tune in folks!

Study: Tyenol usage during pregnancy linked to ADHD

study just published in JAMA Pediatrics finds that Tylenol (acetaminophen) taken by women during their pregnancy may raise the risk of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and similar disorders in their children up to 40%—with the risk increasing the more acetaminophen the mother takes.Acetaminophen can cross the placental barrier, and the study’s authors say it is plausible that the drug may interrupt fetal brain development by interfering with maternal hormones or through neurotoxicity.Infections such as influenza in pregnancy are known to affect the brain development of infants—they’re linked to autism, for instance. So the researchers in this study asked women if they were taking acetaminophen to reduce a fever to treat flu symptoms. Even when taking this into account, women who took acetaminophen were more likely to have children later diagnosed with ADHD.This isn’t the first study to note the connection between a mother’s Tylenol use and her child’s reaction to the toxic drug. A study published late last year showed that women taking acetaminophen during pregnancy increased the risk of their children having serious behavior problems at age 3 by an overwhelming 70%.

Our Bellytich Bumpwatch alum Rochelle Humes from the British group The Saturdays  revealed in a recent interview that she turned down many offers to recreate the iconic 1991  Demi Moore Vanity Fair cover.

“I got asked to do all those (naked) shoots with the bump and I just thought it sounded like hell. No, no and no,” she told the magazine.  “Marvin was lucky if he saw me with my bump. I wanted to feel like Demi Moore looked, but I was just sweaty, spotty and yuck.”
Several celebrities in the US, UK and elsewhere have posed nude while pregnant for magazines. So there you have it, not all celebrities are eager to bare it all for the celebration of the pregnant body for the world to see. (ha!)

10 Suggestions for Parents of kids being bullied

There are few things as heartbreaking and infuriating as learning that your child is the victim of bullying. As attention towards this very real problem allows more parents to understand that the way some children are treated is more serious than a simple case of “kids being kids,” efforts to crack down on schoolyard harassment are increased. If your child is among the millions that are physically or emotionally tormented by a bullying peer, these 10 tips can help you navigate this delicate situation.

  1. Recognize the Signs – Kids are often reluctant to approach an adult or to report bullying behavior because of a sense of shame or embarrassment. It’s important to keep your eyes open for any signs of bullying so that you’re able to recognize them and begin to help your child solve the problem.
  2. Be Available – While pushing or pressuring your child to open up about any trouble he’s having at school is likely to make him even more reluctant to talk, it’s imperative that your child know you’re there and available to listen to him whenever he does need to talk to you. When he’s not being pressed to talk about being bullied, he may be more willing to open up.
  3. Ask Questions – Make sure that you take the time to learn what sort of abuse your child is suffering from, why it’s happening and what you can do to support him through it.
  4. Discourage Retaliation – It’s imperative that you not only abstain from encouraging your child to retaliate against bullying peers, but also that you take an obvious stand against it. Retaliation will only cause your child to land himself in trouble, and can often backfire in terrible ways.
  5. Save Harassing Communications – Make sure that any emails, private messages on social networking sites, texts or voice messages that contain harassing statements, threats or other proof of bullying are saved for reporting purposes.
  6. Speak With School Administrators – In persistent cases of bullying, the best course of action is to calmly approach school administrators to discuss the matter. Though it can be understandably difficult for you to keep your emotions under wraps during these conversations, it’s important to remember that you’re more likely to get the results you’re looking for if you maintain your composure and remain calm.
  7. Teach Him How to Block and Report Cyberbullies –Social networking sites, email providers and other Internet-based communication portals almost always have “Block and Report” options, which can help to prevent some harassing messages from reaching a bullied kid. Make sure that your child knows how to block social networking profiles, email addresses and phone numbers from contacting him.
  8. Get Him Involved in an Activity or Hobby – Helping your child find a hobby that he’s interested in and getting him involved in activities outside of school can not only help to distract him from the taunts of his classmates, but also can boost his confidence when he discovers that he’s skilled in a particular area.
  9. Nurture His Self-Esteem – Your child’s self-esteem takes a battering when he’s taunted by bullies, making it imperative that you do everything you can to help him rebuild it. Make an effort to let him know that he’s an important, treasured part of the family, and that he’s loved very much and cannot be replaced.
  10. Consider Counseling – In particularly severe or long-term cases of bullying, your child may require the services of a counselor to work out his feelings and begin to recover. Remember that years of being bullied are the equivalent of being abused for that period of time, and may require some assistance for your child to overcome
