Tips for Monitoring Kids’ Digital Devices (INFOGRAPHIC)

According to a recent Nielsen survey, 70 percent of teens aged 13 – 17 now use smartphones.  Monitoring the smartphones, tablets, laptops, game consoles and other devices can be a struggle for parents.
The makers of the device management app MORE have tried to solve the problem by creating platform which allows parents to remotely access, control and monitor all of their family’s devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, iPads, etc.). MORE founders state their app is perfect for those who use their devices for both work and home.

Check out this infographic they’ve assembled to help frame the dilemma:

We love Kourtney Kardashian, but not her boating safety habits

This week, mom-to-be Kourtney Kardashian and her family are still vacationing and showing off photos of their fabulous adventures with their fans and followers in social media.

But please, don’t learn boating safety from your favorite celebrity.

We noticed yesterday, the pregnant E! reality TV star shared a photo of herself with her beau Scott Disick and sister Khloe Kardashian pushing off shore in a sailboat but none of them were wearing life jackets.

While the pic may have been staged and the mom of two could have slipped on the safety jacket after the photo, but the message to the millions of impressionable people who follow and try to copy their every move has already been set.

It reminded us to reshare our post from May about National Drowning Month  with tips we got from the  US Swim School Association.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. On average, 3,533 people die as a result of drowning each year, and most of those deaths are children under the age of four who drown in backyard swimming pools. The tragedy of these statistics is nearly all drowning deaths are preventable.

Once again, learn some of the standard things parents should do:

  1. keep their children under their supervision constantly;
  2. enroll them in swimming classes;
  3. know CPR;’ and
  4. install pool fences and barriers.

In addition to these vital steps, USSSA has created a list of tips parents can use to build extra layers of protection for their children around water.

Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Tips
  • Create a verbal cue for your toddler or child that must be given by you before he or she can enter the pool.
  • Never allow your baby/toddler in the pool without a swim diaper.
  • Create a process the child must go through before entering a pool such as putting on a swim diaper, a swimsuit and applying sunscreen.
  • Never use flotation devices or water wings when swimming or when teaching kids to swim.
  • Children should learn to swim without goggles.  Teach your children to open their eyes under water; if they fall in they can find the side of the pool or a step and get out safely.
  • For very young children practice having them put their entire face under water in the bathtub and blow bubbles to build their comfort with water.
  • Create a water safety plan for your family and have water emergency drills with your kids covering how to recognize the signs of someone struggling in water and what to do in this type of emergency.
  • Make sure your guests and kids’ friends know your pool rules before they go outside and get in the pool.
  • Start swim lessons at 6 months of age and continue them year-round at a US Swim School member location.
  • Always make sure your children wear life jackets on boats, personal watercraft and in open bodies of water.
Be safe out there parents!

Trend: The Bridesmaids butts shot in wedding photography

I am set to be a bridesmaids for my very first time ever this summer. I’m quite excited as I have always wanted to be one. It’s quite the opposite of the old adage “always a bridesmaid never a bride.” But one thing I am certain my pretty conservative bride won’t be making us do is participate in the new wedding photography trend of having the bride and her bridesmaid take a photograph of themselves exposing their underwear while facing away from the camera.
Quite a few of the fruits of such photo sessions have made their way to Pinterest, Imugur, Google images and back! Here are a few:

6 Tips for eating healthy at cook outs and barbecues

This Summer, we can easily pack on the pounds at various events that revolve around food. Cook outs and barbecues are common places for you to let your diet go to pot! Even the healthiest of eaters can be overwhelmed by the array of dips and fixings at a typical summer bash. According to the Daily Mail, the average BBQ diner eats more than 3,000 calories in a single sitting – the equivalent to a day and a half’s worth of food for the typical woman. Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company’s Registered Dietician Laura Burbank suggests six simple ways to keep BBQ fare from becoming a dieter’s nightmare.
We hope you can consider letting your readers know about these healthy BBQ tips:

Skip the Chips Salty, crispy, grab-able snacks such as chips, pretzels and snack mixes are everywhere at summer social gatherings. To counter the temptations, fill up the buffet tables with healthier foods with a crunch like salty kale chips or strips of bell peppers to dip in spicy hummus, guacamole, or sour cream. Produce such as broccoli florets, carrots, jicama, cherry tomatoes and baby cucumbers also make great snacks.
H2O Isn’t Just for the Pool  Juice, sodas and sweetened teas are often made with high-fructose corn

syrup and may contain brominated vegetable oil, which can wreak havoc on our bodies. Instead, pack coolers with sparkling mineral water, unsweetened tea, or offer a water cooler filled with chilled cucumber – mint or berry/citrus-infused water.

Banish the Bun  Despite the fact that bread products raise blood sugar as quickly and as much as eating two tablespoons of pure sugar, we still seem to fill these picnic staples with anything we can throw on the grill. Try going bun-less by eating with a fork and knife to slow down your eating. Use a lettuce-wrap approach to put some color into your meal or toss your grilled goods on top of a plate of hearty salad greens.

Eat Your Hotdog Naked  Most condiments are packed with unsavory additives to enhance flavor, shelf

life, texture, or appearance. Season with fresh or dried herbs and seasonings and try dry rubs for chicken and ribs, pack some fresh herbs and spices into your grass-fed burger patties, or marinate your poultry or seafood with olive oil, citrus, and herbs before searing them on the grill. Fresh salsa, guacamole, sour cream, or hearty mustard are great toppings for your bun-less burger, chicken, or brats.

Make Faux Salads a Faux Pas  Potato salads, macaroni salad and pasta salad do not offer our bodies any true nourishment. Replacing these sides with some roasted vegetable salads or crisp, lightly-dressed coleslaw or use Greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise or sour cream when making your own side dishes.

Don’t Chase the Ice Cream Man  Popular summer desserts such as gelatin and colorful ice pops include

artificial coloring agents that could just as easily dye our hair, clothing, or crafts. Instead, choose to naturally sweeten up your party with fruit kabobs, frozen berries with heavy cream, or homemade real-fruit popsicles.

Christina Aguilera’s baby shower cake will make you blush

Mom-to-be Christina Aguilera shocked an intimate gathering of 50 adult guests at her baby shower on Saturday, July 12, with a graphic wedding cake of a woman pushing out a baby.
Too funny! Nice to see the power vocalist has a wacky sense of humor. According to an E! Online  source, attendees noshed on “breaded chicken, veggie burgers, sliders, fresh sd alads, tomatoes and burrata and mini grilled cheese sandwiches” and sipped signature cocktails and mocktails.
Aguilera and her fiance Matt Rutler are expecting a daughter, in advance of their Christmas season wedding. Aguilera is mom to 6-year old Max with her ex husband Jordan Bratman.
The cake actually is featured among a medley of wacky shower cakes from our Bellyitch back in 2011 and is floating around the internet.

10 Tips for Staying Cool During a Heat Wave

Many areas in the country are currently suffering under a heat wave. Thank goodness for the nanny.net tips for staying cool during a heatwave. Phew! You too should keep these tips in mind if you find yourself living in a heat advisory this summer:

If you’re facing a heat wave, consider these 10 things:

1. Avoid the heat. Stay out of the sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If you do venture out, be sure everyone has sunscreen and hats on.

2. Turn on the AC. Air conditioning can be a real lifesaver for those facing a heat wave. If you don’t have air conditioning, fill a pan with ice, put a box fan in front of it, and sit in front of the cool air.

3. Stay hydrated. During a heat wave it is essential that everyone stays adequately hydrated. Be sure to drink and offer lots of water and fruit juice. Adults should avoid anything with caffeine or alcohol, as both are considered diuretics.

4. Wear loose clothing. Light, breathable clothing will help keep you cool during hot and humid weather. Remember, the looser the fabric weave, the less protection it offers from the sun.

5. Shut the windows and draw the shades if it’s hotter outside than it is inside. If it is cooler inside than it is outside, keep it that way by closing the windows and shades. Light colored drapes may be more effective at keeping the heat out than darker or metallic colored ones.

6. Take cool baths or showers. Don’t underestimate the power of a cool bath or shower. A cool bath or shower can offer a refreshing break to the heat.

7.  Avoid strenuous activity. Don’t overdo it during a heat wave. During a heat wave, you’ll want to skip yours and the kids exercise routine and keep active outdoor activity to a minimum.

8. Create indoor fun. From playing board games to doing arts and crafts, there are lots of fun things you can do inside with the kids during a heat wave. Older kids may enjoy playing card games and younger kids may enjoy coloring, cutting, and pasting to make their own artful creations. Watching movies together is another way to beat the heat.

9. Eliminate additional sources of heat.  Incandescent light bulbs, appliances, and computers can throw off heat. Shut off and unplug all nonessential electronics during a heat wave to minimize the extra heat that is added to the environment. Instead of turning the oven on to cook, opt for simple suppers like cereal, sandwiches, or other items that don’t require using the oven or stove.

10. Head out for cooler fun.  If the kids get cabin fever, consider heading out for an indoor adventure. Head to a family movie, go for a walk around the mall, take a swim at an indoor pool, or visit other family-friendly, air conditioned venues for something fun to do.

New EEOC guidance: Employers must provide lactation rooms; Can offer abortion; treats pregnancy like a disabilty

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued a groundbreaking ruling Enforcement Guidance today clarifying the nation’s pregnancy discrimination rules.  The EEOC decided and noted, among other things:
1. Employers must give women who are pregnant the same flexibility and accommodations as they provide for disabled and ill employees. So, for example, if an employer provides an employee who has a back injury or some other movement limiting disability “light duty” to accommodate their limitations, he or she should provide similar adjustments for women who are pregnant.
2. Employers cannot judge work-limitations due to pregnancy in a different light that it would consider limitations caused by an injury or sudden illness.
3. Violations of the Affordable Care Act’s requirement to provide suitable places for women to pump their breast milk is also a violation of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.

4. Employers are guilty of stereotyping when they decide to not hire, promote or give a pregnant woman a task based on their biased perception she would be able to perform her duties well after she delivers her baby.
5. Employers cannot fire a woman returning  from maternity leave just because a pregnant woman was on maternity leave; neither can they fire a woman while she is on maternity leave.
6. Employers cannot exclude birth control from medical policies unless they fall under rules exceptions. This one is a dig at the recent U.S. Supreme Court cases exempting certain employers from complying with the AHA birth control laws. But it went further, to clarify, that an employer CAN include abortion in its plan if it wants.
Not all, including some of the Commissioners on the panel agreed with the majority’s decision, arguing that treating pregnancy like a disability is an insult to the disability community. Read the reply to those in the minority of this decision from Commissioner Chai Feldblum HERE!
