Bump Watch: Kelly Rowland shares prenatal Yoga bump photo

Newly wed Kelly Rowland shared a photo of herself yesterday doing prenatal Yoga on her instagram account. The Motivation singer and former Destiny’s Child band member and her husband, music manager Tim Witherspoon, married this May in an intimate ceremony in Costa Rica on May 10.
She announced her pregnancy on June 10 by sharing a photo of her husband’s black Air Jordan high top sneakers near a pair of tiny sneakers, with the caption, “I’ll be stunting like my daddy.” It could be a hint that the songstress, who is currently working on Pepsi‘s Beats of the Beautiful Game World Cup album, is having a baby boy. Who knows as baby girls wear Jordans too.
We wonder if Beyonce will pay her back for slipping up and accidentally sharing the gender of Bey’s first child during in interview in 2011. Ha!
Speaking of which, some are declaring Rowland’s share as a reaction to all the conspiracy theorists who still do not believe Beyonce was actually pregnant with her first child and used a surrogate and a fake baby bump. What can we say? Haters are gonna hate.

Study: Childcare biggest household budget item at $18,000 annually (INFOGRAPHIC)

At $18,000 annually, childcare is now the biggest household budget item for families, a new Care.com survey revealed.  That amount exceeds food and housing, the survey by the world’s largest online care destination.

The study, conducted by the company which boasts 10.7 million members spanning 16 countries,  discovered that nearly 50% of families don’t budget for childcare.

This is the case even though they may start saving for college by the time their child reaches the proverbial terrible twos. The May 2014 findings revealed that 75% of U.S. families are overwhelmed by the cost of child care, perhaps because they failed to factor it in their household expenses.

And of the 700 people surveyed, only 52% knew that they were eligible for child care tax breaks.  With average weekly rates for a nanny ranging from $472-$504 depending upon the number of children cared for, without ample preparation, costs can quickly mount.

“There are several planning steps we encourage families to take when expecting a baby,” said Donna Levin, Co-Founder and VP of Operations, Care.com.  “They should research the maternity and paternity leave policies of their employers and decide together who will take leave and for how long.  Many families are also surprised to learn about the different kinds of care available, such as nannies, baby sitters and day care centers, and it’s important to understand the differences as you select the solution that best fits your family.  And finally, budget.  Care.com’s pay and nanny tax calculators are a good place to start in determining budget, how much you can afford to spend on child care, and what options make the most sense for your family.”
And the earlier families plan, the more money they can save.  Many employers offer flexible spending accounts (FSAs) where families can set aside up to $5,000 pre-tax for child care expenses.  Additionally, some businesses offer child care reimbursements for working parents, on-site day care or membership to services like Care.com.  However, the study found that only 31% of employees currently take advantage of benefits like FSAs, although 83% of employees who have access to child care benefits say they help reduce stress and improve work-life balance.

The following infographic breaks down the numbers in the survey for clarity.

New mom Lisa Ling gets diagnosed with ADD at age 40; 3 Myths about ADD in Girls

This week, our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum and veteran journalist Lisa Ling revealed that she was recently diagnosed with having Attention Deficit Disorder at age 40.
While working on an investigative piece for her OWN channel show Our America with Lisa Ling, the former The View  co-host  got tested herself and learned that her focus issues since a child were in fact caused by the condition that went undiagnosed/
Her revelelation provides a unique opportunity for us to share PsychCentral.com‘s listing of common myths associated with ADD, one of them being that girls don’t get it considering that boys are usually diagnosed with ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficity Hyperactive Disorder):
Ling and her husband Dr. Paul Song welcomed a daughter, their first child,  Jett last May.
Myths about girls with ADHD abound. Here are three more myths followed by the facts.
1. Myth: If girls do have ADHD, they only have the inattentive type.
Fact: The inattentive type of ADHD does seem to be more common in girls with ADHD. But, as Matlen said, “they are out there!” “They might instead be considered “tomboys,” as they cartwheel their way to school and climb trees after school,” she said.
Socialization may explain why girls don’t exhibit hyperactivity in the classroom, according to Sarkis. “It is thought that one reason girls exhibit less hyperactivity in class may not have to do with the disorder itself – rather, girls may have been socially conditioned to speak out less in class and be less ‘disruptive,’” she said. Matlen agreed. “Society allows for girls to be passive and quiet,” she said.
It’s also important to note that “[inattentive] girls suffer as much as hyperactive boys who, with their external behaviors, are picked up more quickly by school staff and parents,” she added.
2. Myth: Girls with the inattentive type of ADHD don’t need stimulants.
Fact: Many medical professionals think that stimulants only treat hyperactivity, Matlen said. However, stimulants can help with symptoms of inattention and distractibility, she said. Treating any disorder with medication requires careful consideration. But it’s important for parents and practitioners to know that stimulants can successfully treat these very disruptive symptoms of ADHD.
3. Myth: Girls are less likely to have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) than boys.
Fact: According to Sarkis, there is actually a 50 percent rate of co-occurrence between ODD and ADHD. And “that rate is the same regardless of gender,” she said. For instance, she cited this study, which found no gender differences for ODD – and no differences for general anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, dysthymia and separation anxiety disorder.
Warning Signs in Girls with ADHD
Because ADHD can manifest differently in girls, Matlen shared several warning signs that a girl might have the disorder.
At school, girls might excessively daydream; have poor grades even though they’re capable of better work; and forget or not finish up assignments, especially projects that have many parts. Hyperactive girls might exhibit “Chatty Cathy” behaviors, such as “non-stop talking and bossiness.”
Girls might also have few friends and be described as “loners.” They might easily tune out and be “spacey,” she said. They might have a messy bedroom and experience more emotional outbursts than kids their age. They’re also more likely to “feel overwhelmed and internalize that into anxiety [and] fears,” Matlen said.
While there’s been much progress in understanding and treating girls with ADHD, there’s still more work to be done. Whether you’re a teacher, parent or mental health professional, getting educated on how ADHD manifests in girls can help you provide truly helpful support.

There’s an App for that: Managing Your Kids Chores and Allowance at the same time

chores istock
If you’re a parent and have a kid or kids of the “chore-doing” age, you probably have realized by now that  keeping track of their chores and allowance earned for doing them can be a hassle. Good thing these days there are plenty of apps in the Apple Store and Android Market to help out wary parents and their harried kids anxious to earn some cash to buy the things they want.
We are digging the recently launched “Goodie Goodie” app which lets parents input various chores and activities like “do homework,” “take out trash”, “do the dishes” and lets their kids accumulate points for each task. On the other end, the kids plug in their wish list items in the same app so that when they accumulate enough points from doing chores, they get rewarded with a gift card from various retailers to purchase their wish list item.
Brilliant! The concept is the brainchild of a mom of three who figured there ought to be a similar award-system like the Starbucks reward program but for kids, and her sister who heard her say this and responded with, “Let’s build that!”
The app’s existing brand partners include K-Mart, Toys R Us, Game Stop, Build-A-Bear, Wal-Mart and other stores while adding more.
There is also customization for custom-gifts and an option to donate some of the cash earned to charity. Nice for teaching about doing good for others, being a good community citizen and sharing their wealth with the less fortunate.
In addition to Goodie Goodie’s goal of bettering families, the company is also donating a portion of the proceeds from the purchase of eGift cards to DoSomething.org, the country’s largest non-profit supporting young people and social change.

Besides Goodie Goodie App, there are several other apps that help parents discipline their kids like those featured on BellyitchBlog.com this week.
