Clues you may not be as hip as you used to be…

 This is a true story.
MUSIC CLUES
You can’t pick Justin Bieber out in a line up…neither anyone from Young Hollywood …neither any of the Disney/Nickelodean actors turned pop star (Jonas/Selena Gomez/Miranda Cosgrove etc)
TV CLUES
You are in your hotel gym during a business trip. An MTV commercial comes on for The RealWorld Las Vegas and you say to yourself,  “hmmmm, so THAT show is still on?”

RADIO CLUES
You only listen to talk radio, NPR and the news and traffic channels.
INTERNET CLUES
You don’t track trending topics on Twitter any longer OR you spend most of your social media time on LinkedIN rather than Twitter or Facebook. (But at least you’re on Twitter, right?)
MAGAZINE CLUES
You have not cracked a cover of any of the 24 magazines that make up your 2-year subscription of IN-STYLE magazine (and more than likely, your wardrobe selections are starting to show it)
It’s okay. You’re wise and aging is a blessing and a privilege.
That’s a good spin, isn’t it! Ha!

Tips for organizing your children’s clothing

From the moment of your first baby shower until the day your child officially grows up and moves away, it can seem as if managing her clothing is a full-time job. Organizing the no-man’s-land that is a child’s closet can seem overwhelming, even when you’re a parent who has an enthusiastic affinity for putting everything in its proper place and a knack for carving those spaces out. If mountains of clothing fall out of your child’s closet any time the doors are opened, these tips can help you take control of the chaos and get the closet back under control.

Cull Outgrown Clothing Regularly

Whether you’re sentimental and loath to part with the clothing that documents each of your child’s developmental stages or simply haven’t had the time to tackle the mounds of outgrown clothing your child owns, the first step to creating an organized, clutter-free closet for your youngster is to cull everything that no longer fits or is damaged, and to repeat the process periodically to keep old-clothes collections from getting out of hand again. Donating serviceable items to local charities, selling them to a consignment store, or even passing them along to friends and relatives as hand-me-downs will keep perfectly good items from going to waste and also get them out of your house once and for all. If you’re collecting clothing for sentimental reasons, the process can be a bit more complicated. Paring down the collection of clothes that you’re saving to only those with real milestones attached can help; the outfit she came home from the hospital in, the dress from her first birthday party, or what she wore on her first day of school are great keepsakes. All of the outgrown scraps of play clothes and novelty t-shirts, however, will only serve to clutter some area of your home. Getting rid of things that have no specific sentimental value can help you make room for new things, make it easier to organize her current wardrobe, and give the gift of much-needed clothing to less fortunate children.

Rotate Seasonal Items

If you know that your child won’t be wearing shorts in January, make a habit of switching out his wardrobe seasonally. Unless you live in an extremely temperate, mild climate, short sleeves and sandals probably won’t see much use during the winter months, so make room for the heavy jackets and sweaters of winter by moving summer clothing into storage. When it’s time to pull clothing out of storage and rotate back to the warm-weather items, make sure you take the opportunity to cull anything he’s outgrown over the winter. When the things in his closet are things he uses, rather than things that lurk at the back and unnecessarily take up space, it’s easier to maintain an organizational system.

Invest in an Organizational System

While handy parents can build shelving systems that are customized to the specific dimensions of their child’s closet, those that are a bit less talented in the construction arts may want to consider investing in a ready-made system to make the job of organizing a bit easier. In most cases, these systems can be adjusted and modified as your child grows and his needs change, making them worth the money and easy to maintain over the years. Bins, shelves and adjustable rods make it easier to compartmentalize your child’s clothing and shoes in a way that works for your family.

Space-Saving Solutions

Opting for space-saving choices like hanging complete outfits on one hanger not only makes more room in your child’s closet, it can also save a significant amount of time during his morning routine by eliminating the need to locate coordinating items. Cascading hangers that hold several articles of clothing, hanging organizers that add quick shelving to a closet that has only a rod, and bins for storing shoes and other items are all great and cost-effective space-saving solutions that can make your organizational project run more smoothly.

Keep Clothes in Kids’ Reach

When your child is learning to dress himself and is exploring his burgeoning independence, you’ll want to make sure that he can reach all of his clothing to foster that independence and ability to manage simple tasks on his own. As you’re conceptualizing your organizational system for his closet, building it around the idea of keeping the things he needs most within his reach can create a clean, clutter-free space that he’s able to use without adult assistance.

Attempted murder charge for pregnant woman who drove kids in SUV into Ocean

Ebony Wilkerson even tried to call off bystanders hustling to rescue her screaming children from the water, saying “everyone was OK” as she left the van in the ocean, an affidavit said. Wilkerson, 32, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts child abuse causing great bodily harm.
Volusia County Court Judge Shirley Green found probable cause for the charges during Wilkerson’s first appearance in court Saturday and set her bond at $1.2 million. A date for an arraignment was not released.
The bystanders and beach safety officers, paying no attention to the mother, pulled the two girls and a boy, ages 3, 9 and 10, through the windows to safety Tuesday on Daytona Beach.
Later, Wilkerson denied trying to hurt her children, telling investigators she was driving too close to the water, “and the waves pulled her in,” according to the charging affidavit.
Her children told investigators another story.
“Mom tried to kill us,” they told detectives, according to the document. “Mom is crazy.”
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said Wilkerson, of North Charleston, was in the custody of the sheriff’s office after being hospitalized for a mental evaluation.
The children told authorities they had come to Florida from South Carolina earlier in the week to escape their father. They described a history of violence between their parents, and they said their mother had been “acting crazy and speaking to Jesus” since they had come to stay with Wilkerson’s sister in Daytona Beach.
The sister, Jessica Harrell, didn’t return a phone call from The Associated Press, but she was worried about Wilkerson’s mental health and called a 911 dispatcher hours before the minivan ended up in the ocean.
When she was driving into the ocean, one of the children asked her what she was doing, and she said: “‘I am keeping us all safe,'” according to the affidavit. The boy tried to wrestle the steering wheel away from Wilkerson.
“She told them to close their eyes and go to sleep. She was trying to take them to a better place,” Johnson said at a news conference.
A child also lowered the windows and the siblings yelled for help, attracting the bystanders.
“I’ve got to do this,” Wilkerson told bystander Stacy Robinson as he attempted to intervene, according to the affidavit.

Thandie Newton & 12 Years’ Chiwetel Ejiofor to star in “Half Of A Yellow Sun” (TRAILER)

She just gave birth to her third child and first son, and now Thandie Newton will be seen on screens in the UK starting April 11 when her new film Half of a Yellow Sun opens in the UK.
She stars opposite Academy Award nominee  Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) in the film adaptation of the 2006 Orange Prize for Fiction-winning novel by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The film tracks the lives of four people against the backdrop of the 1967-1970 Nigerian-Biafran war.
There is no US date announced yet, but hopefully they’ll stagger the US release so it doesn’t suffer the fate of The Butler which got forgotten by Academy Awards and was locked out of nominations.
I could imagine just as some African Americans say they are exhausted with seeing movies about slavery become blockbusters here, how about the fact the movies that get Oscar buzz about Africa and featuring Africans are usually about historical conflict and war, such as  Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond, or about South African apartheid like  Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Cry Freedom, Tsosti  and Sarafina?

Half Way is from the UK producers of The Constant Gardner (Gail Eden) and The Last King of Scotland  (Andrea Calderwood ) both whom did masterful jobs at capturing scandal and friction through complicated, complex yet deeply flawed characters and took home some Oscars in the process.
In any event, the previews look amazing! I hope it gets sufficient buzz and I cannot wait to see it when it hits US screens! I’m sure it would walk away with a few BAFTAs for sure!

Green Products: It’s not easy being green, but…

…on Saint Patrick’s Day you can fake it by just wearing green or carrying around a green product!

Like…

…this gorgeous silk evening gown that Crash actress Bahar Soomekh  wore on the red carpet to the 18th Annual Environmental Media awards back in 2008…

or by pushing baby in this green Aprica umbrella stroller that RightStart sells for about $200 bucks!…

or

…donning this green draped maternity dress that Angelina Jolie famously wore on the 2008 Cannes music festival red carpet back in 2008 when she was pregnant with her twins…

…or by carrying the infant in this Baby Bjorn in Leaf Green carrier, which is pretty though not necessarily the best for a developing baby as a sling is…

…or by donning this gorgeous Isabella Oliver Empire Wrap dress that Big Love  actress Anne Dudek work to the 6th annual BAFTA Tea Party back in 2008….

or by strolling the youngings about in this green Baby Jogger Double Stroller Elite….

…HA! It’s worth a try! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Pharrell Williams & Wife Helen’s Unconventional and Awesome Red CarpetStyle: 12 LOOKS

Last week, Pharrell Williams, Academy Award nominee for Best original song in a Motion Picture for his song “Happy” off the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, went to the Oscars in a mini pants tux by Lanvin. It caused quite the stir among fashion mavens and critics. It was much ado about nothing as many noted that musicians have standards for dress different than traditional Hollywood.
But not much was mentioned about his new wife since last October 2013, Helen Lasichanh, and her gender bender awesome and unconventional style of dress.

The designer and model has a 5-year old son with Williams, Rocket Man Williams, born November 2008.  [Little known fact: Rocket Man inspired the song “Happy”.]

Williams and Lasichanh dated for several years before getting engaged last year for three months then marrying.

But um…can we pause for a second and admire and gawk at the amazing and fab eclectic and fashionable uniqueness that is the Williams’ red carpet couple style?

No Shame in Breastfeeding: Ashley Nicole and other Actresses & Models who Social Media shared photos of themselves Nursing

So a couple years ago, R&B singer Eric Benet shared a photo of his wife Manuela Testolini via Instagram, breastfeeding his newborn daughter. He shot the pic because the baby was incidentally holding up her fingers in what looked like a peace sign. Benet didn’t consider the fact that his wife’s breast was exposed at the time.

Well, he got the backlash of his life from people who, apparently, believe breasts should only be shown in social media when squeezed inside teenie tiny bikinis or bursting out the side of an A-lister’s red carpet dress. When shown nourishing a baby it elicits all sorts of queasiness and uneasiness among audiences.
For too many people,  breasts are sexual and should only be shown or used as sexual objects. The idea of a baby nursing makes them uncomfortable and they simply cannot handle it.
Take II.
Two years later, it’s 2014 and Miami Dolphins linebacker Philip Wheeler‘s girlfriend model Ashley Nicole decided to take to her Instagram page to share a photo of herself breastfeeding her baby on the run.
“Was on the way out the door but then mommy duty called,” she captioned the above photo “…Everything stops for him! #breastisbest #natureisbeaufitul”
Nice.
Not so fast, you nursing advocates.
In no time, the image went viral and all sorts of folks who apparently grew up learning to be ashamed of something as natural as nursing went to town, cursing out the mom, calling her all sorts of names on her own Instagram page which many of them had never ever before frequented.  Yeah, going all out of their way to leave whatever website they were trolling or stalking to go to this woman’s page and berate her.
*sigh*
I could blame  sites like TMZ  and  Bossip which posted about the story asking “Is it inappropriate” and certainly siccing their legions of followers on the poor woman.
I hate people sometimes.
Some said the photo and words were not shared to advocate for breastfeeding but to draw attention to mom who is a Ford model and was well-dressed and in shades. Why stop to get a third person to take a photo for Instagram, if it was just natural and incidental, they ask? Only, she was dressed to go out at the time as she mentioned in the photo and she probably figured while stopping to breastfeed, she might as well share the moment with her followers and promote breastfeeding at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone.
The bullying was so intense Wheeler told TMZ Sport that people should back off .

“”I wish everybody would just leave it alone,” Wheeler said. “She’s a model. She takes pictures for a living.”a

Nicole eventually deleted her Instagram account altogether!

Good grief!
According to the Center for Disease Control, 26% of babies are never breastfed.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics research, human milk-feeding decreases the incidence and/or severity of a wide range of infectious diseases including bacterial meningitis, bacteremia, diarrhea, respiratory tract infection, necrotizing  enterocolitis, otitis media, urinary tract infection, and late-onset sepsis in preterm infants.
In addition, post-neonatal infant mortality rates in the United States are reduced by 21% in breastfed infants.
It should come as no surprise that much of the “hate” came from the black and African American community which seemingly has a less than supporting appreciation for breastfeeding and especially for breastfeeding in public. The CDC also reports that African Americans are less likely to breastfeed their children.

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies reports that Blacks stop breastfeeding sooner than other races, setting up their children for higher incidences of illnesses and diseases that non-breastfed children succumb to at a higher rate than those who were nursed.

The report also links higher rates of infant mortality and low birth weight to lack of breastfeeding.

There is a taboo about it among the black community, perhaps, and those who nurse for too long are not encouraged  or supported and are sometimes egged on to stop breastfeeding after a few weeks or months. Although to be fair, shorter breastfeeding times are also linked to low income mothers who have to report to work earlier and have shorter maternity leave and/or work in settings where they do not have a private place to pump and store their milk for their babies.
Kim Durdin-James, national president of the African-American Breastfeeding Alliance (AABA), summed it up well in saying, “In the best of times, breastfeeding is the optimal feeding choice for young children because it provides babies with all vital nutrients for growth and development, but in times of disaster, breastfeeding can mean the difference between life and death.”

Then there are those who bashed Nicole specifically because she was not wed to her baby’s father. Some said that Gisele Bunchen didn’t get the same amount of backlash because she was married when she shared  a similar photo last November.

But Bundchen wasn’t the first.

Xena the Warrior Princess actress and model Lucy Lawless who was photographed (above) for World Breastfeeding Week in 2002.

Singer P!nk  shared a photo of herself breastfeeding via her Instagram account, although she has since deleted the image.

Australian Model Miranda Kerr tweeted a photo of herself in 2011 breastfeeding her daughter in between costume changes during a photo shoot on her personal blog, which is currently taking a hiatus.

It shouldn’t matter if she’s married or not, a model or an actress, sharing a natural  act shouldn’t be shamed or shunned. Whether it is considered oversharing or too private for Instagram or not is up for debate and up to the individual person sharing.

We say kudos to them if destigmatizing it will eventually make it less unpopular among some groups.

Keep on brave women.

International Women’s Day: The Truth About Worldwide Inequity & Bias for Women

Yesterday, we shared an infographic that attempted to debunk statistics that say there is gender inequality in pay in the United States. Today, on International Women’s Day, we report statistics from a new World Bank which points out significant inequality and inequity that remain in ever sector of life for women world wide.
We spotted some of these numbers noting out that “even in countries where women have advanced, gender economic inequality remains a serious problem,” summarized in a recent report in The Nation .
For example, as The Nation summarized:
  • Women continue to trail behind men by every economic measure.
  • Their labor force participation of women worldwide has stagnated over the past two decades, declining slightly from 57 percent to 55 percent today. Female labor force participation has sunk as low as 25 percent in the Middle East and North Africa.

  • According to an ILO analysis of eighty-three countries, on average, women earn between 10 and 30 percent less than comparable men. There is no country in the earth where women have reached wage parity.
  • Sexist bias and social norms continue to impose an enormous penalty on women’s economic well-being. Women worldwide spend at least twice as much time as men do on unpaid housework and care work. According to the report’s authors, close to 40 percent of people worldwide “agree that, when jobs are scarce, men should have more right to jobs than women.”
  • Women’s lack of access to credit, land, and education remains serious obstacles. Though girls’ access to education is improving in many areas of the world, in sixteen countries in 2010–12, female-to-male enrollment ratios in primary education were less than 90 percent, and millions of children in those countries were not enrolled at all.
  • Various forms of sex-based economic discrimination are perfectly in the vast majority of countries in the world. 128 of 143 countries had some sort of sex-based legal differentiation in 2013. In some countries, women still need their husbands’ consent to work.

This month, Essence magazine has an article “Money & Power: Earn What You’re Worth”,  about pay inequality that challenges claims that pay inequity is an outcome of statistical manipulation. It quotes DC lawyer Debbie Hines who shared that after a male colleague with nearly identical credentials got offered a job he couldn’t take, she interviewed for it at his suggestion, got the job but was offered $30,000 less.
“I can’t see this huge disparity being caused by anything other than discrimination against me for being a woman and an African-American, because it wasn’t my resume,” said Hines who authors the blog LegalSpeaks.com and who ultimately took the job at the now-defunct law firm. She said that accepting the lower salary made it tough for her to negotiate her next position having to start at a lower salary. “It follows you,” she stated.
It is an anecdotal reminder that pay inequity is real as is unconscious bias.
This International Women’s History Month, we, women, all should acknowledge our greatness and power, but also make sure we spread awareness to others about how far yet we have to go and if, possible, do something to move the world towards greater parity.
Do it for our sisters. Do it for Sisterhood!
