Mom died for 45 minutes after c-section, recalls after-life experience

A Florida woman died for 45 minutes following complications during her C-section delivery, but miraculously and suddenly revived to the shock of medical professionals.
Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro‘s heart stopped this past September after suffering an amniotic fluid embolism that surrounded her baby’s clogged heart.
For close to an hour of the 3 hours doctors tried to revive her, she had no pulse.  And just as they were ready to call in her family to say their final goodbye’s,  Graupera-Cassimiro reached out for a nurse’s hand, the nurse Julie Ewing told WFLX TV.
“Everyone was in disbelief,” Dr. Jordan Knurr told the station. “This doesn’t happen.”
What Graupera-Cassimiro told nurse Ewing strengthened Ewing’s belief in God, recounting the experience of floating down a dark tunnel before being told by a spiritual being that it was not her time.
“That day, God was real — more real than I ever dreamed of,” Ewing said.
Ewing says Ruby told nurses what she remembers during the time her pulse stopped. “She said she went down a tunnel. She didn’t walk. She said it was more like she was floating… that she saw a spiritual being that told her it wasn’t her time,” Ewing said.
Graupera-Cassimiro is now home with her baby.

‘The Leftovers’ Liv Tyler radiates in Paul Wetherall photo

Liv Tyler of HBO‘s The Leftovers serial drama based on the famous Stephen King book looked absolutely gorgeous in a recent pregnancy maternity portrait she shared with her fans in social media.
“Photo for my honey David by #PaulWetherall thank you Town and Country Mag!! !!!!!!!,” she captioned the understated classic sepia filtered photo by the famed fashion photographer. She looked super gorg in that dark off the shoulder dress looking down at and cradling her bump, her hair swept to one side old Hollywood-style.
The David she references is her partner sports and entertainment manager and British football agent David Gardner. This will be the first child for the couple. She announced the pregnancy this past September.
Tyler has a 9-year old son Milo with ex-husband British musician Royston Langdon of the band Spacehog.

The former child model is also the daughter to rocker Stephen Tyler of the group Aerosmith.
We probably can expect to see this photo in an upcoming issue of Town and Country magazine.

Give Thanks: 15 Volunteer activities your child can do

While Thanksgiving is a season for giving, for children it ends up being a season for receiving only as many lose sight of the fact that the Holidays is also a time for appreciating what you have and about the priceless gifts of family and togetherness that have no price tag.
Thanksgiving can also be a wonderful opportunity to  nurture a spirit of giving to others as well.
A recent Nanny Classifieds post explains the benefits of volunteering, and notes how lending “a hand to someone in need can heighten your child’s sense of self-esteem and self-worth while also providing an opportunity to possibly discover new career options on which to build aspirations.”
In it, there are 15 examples of volunteer activities that children can engage in this Holiday season and beyond to help them appreciate all they have and receive in their lives.
  1. Collect children’s books from family and friends and donate them to a local hospital or library
  2. Sign up for a charity walk to benefit an organization or disease awareness
  3. Donate food to a food pantry by having your child pick out an item each time you shop for groceries
  4. Volunteer to serve meals to the homeless at a local shelter or food pantry
  5. Compile activity boxes, complete with puzzles, coloring books and games, to donate to a children’s center or children’s hospital
  6. Donate a few hours to picking up litter at local parks or roadways
  7. Visit a nursing home and offer to share your talents through musical entertainment or story time
  8. Deliver meals to the homebound (many food pantries offer these services)
  9. Take the kids along as you volunteer to drive an elderly neighbor to the doctor or grocery store
  10. Volunteer to feed, walk and care for abandoned animals at the local animal shelter
  11. Gather several classmates and friends to raise awareness and money to help refugee kids in schools around the world
  12. Recruit the entire family to tutor, mentor or read with younger children
  13. Work with the local Red Cross agency to give blood or organize a community blood drive
  14. Make cards, blankets and stuffed animals for sick children and donate to a local organization who provides care items to hospitals and children’s centers
  15. There are unlimited options for volunteering, both locally and nationally, that you can take advantage of to show children how acts of kindness can significantly impact someone else’s life. Find even more opportunities and learn how to brainstorm and plan family volunteer trips with the PBS Family Guide to Volunteering.
It is recommended to designate a specific day each week for volunteer activities.
“Having children volunteer helps them to get out of themselves,” New Hampshire clinical psychologist Carl Hindy says. “It teaches them social interest, empathy and awareness of others.”

Vanessa Lachey covers American Baby, offers advice to first-time parents

Second time mom-to-be Vanessa Lachey covers the December 2014/January 215 edition of American Baby magazine.
The mom to 2-year old son Camen Instagrammed the above cover image preview of the magazine with the caption: “Baby girl Lachey’s first cover! Well, sort of! Thank you American Baby for this fun cover and opportunity to share some stuff with my fellow Mamas! #VanessaAmericanBaby ❤️ “
Inside the issue, the former MTV‘s  Total Request LIVE! host offers some sage advice as a veteran mom to new first-time mothers and parents.
The former Miss Teen USA  recommends that moms be patient with their baby’s and to cherish the moment.
“As a baby, Camden would take about an hour to breastfeed,” adding ” by the time he finished, it was almost time to feed again. A friend reminded me that infants are learning everything for the first time. So who am I to say, “Hurry up and eat. We have to go?” I tried to look at that time as an opportunity to love on him.”
She also opened up about not feeling connected to her son Camden while in utero but wondering if there was something wrong with her, but finally feeling connected when she learned of the baby’s gender.
” I’ve wanted this my whole life, and I’m forcing myself to have those feelings,” she said she thought of her odd feelings, “For me, the love really flowed when I found out the baby was a boy. That’s when I could finally bond, once I knew ‘it’ was a him.”
Lachey, who has been married to ex 98 Degrees boy band member musician and TV host Nick Lachey, said once her son was born, she learned that not knowing it all was part of parenting, and she calmed down.
She  also advised new first-time-parents to resist comparing themselves to others.
“With social media, people share mostly their best moments,” Vanessa Lachey shared.  “Don’t feel like you’re not doing enough when you see a mom posting about making applesauce after you bought it. Ha ha! It’s fine! Just for raising a little human being you should be commended.”
Great advice all around!

Tia Mowry gets Braids and Introducing JJ Braids

Woot! Look who got some hot and bold godess box braids!!! Tia Mowry!

One half of our fave twin moms and Bellyitch Blog alums is adding some edge and twist to her look with this brave style! She shared this above image to her fans and followers of her Facebook page account recently.

We love it!

This is a great time then to introduce Bellytich Blog readers who are interested in or who can wear ethnic braided styles to my new braided hair blog, JJ Braids.

I only created JJBraids.com this week after getting numerous queries and requests from friends, family, strangers, in person and in social media, about my various braided styles.
“What is that style?” “What type of braided extensions is that?” “What texture is it?” “What is the length?”” How much did it cost?”” Who did it?”
In this new blog, I answer those questions of the various braided styles I’ve worn over the past 10 years consistently and regularly.
In coming weeks, I will add links to shops where one can get their hair done in a similar style and links to online resources to purchase the hair.
I hope it can be a resource as I noticed that there really isn’t a similar website or blog out there like it.
If you are on Facebook, I invite you to join the spanking brand new Facebook page.
If you are on Pinterest, follow the JJ’s Braids Pinterest page where I will be adding more styles from around the web.
I plan to launch a Twitter and Instagram version too soon so you can keep up dependent of the choice of social media you frequent most.
Thanks friends and do share! Much appreciate it!

Alyssa Milano questions breastfeeding v. nude Kim Kardashian cover double standard

Thank you Alyssa Milano for calling out the double standard in American culture over breasts.
In a recent tweet addressing Kim Kardashian‘s nude cover photos for Paper magazine, Milano tweeted,
“Wait! I don’t get it. No disrespect to Kim but… people are offended by my breastfeeding selfies & are fine with her (amazing) booty cover? “
Yes girl. This is A-merica!
In October, many took to social media and the blogs to express their disappointment, disdain or disapproval for the Mistresses alum’s decision to share a selfie of herself while breastfeeding.
It also reminded me of all the shaming a college graduate got for nursing her hungry baby right after getting her diploma, then sharing a pic a friend snapped of her on a breastfeeding support Facebook page.
The image created a lot of controversy by those wishing she would cover up.
Interestingly enough, it is probably fair to assume that those who were decrying breastfeeding moms in public are the same ones who probably wouldn’t think nothing of Rihanna wearing a sheer dress that same month which revealed much of her bare breasts.

Answer: All of them

How to transition your Son from ‘Wimpy Kid’ to Chapter Books

Parents to boys often lament over the fact that they can’t

seem to get their sons into reading and enjoying books for pleasure.
For those that are reading, they prefer the fun books from comic strips like Diary of a Wimpy Kid” or the “Big Nate” books but not more substantive chapter books that are all words with no illustrations.
My husband and I faced such a quandary through our son’s

early childhood as well.
Like many modern parents, we had succumbed to the pressure of

indulging his interest in video games. We got him his first starter game console

in first or second grade and between that, and online games, it was a wrap.
He would throw fits like a crack addict if we told him

he couldn’t play games. He’d bug us when we were out to hurry and go home so he

could get his Xbox fix. His grades and interest in school slipped.  It got out of hand.
Suzanne Collins “The Underland Chronicles”

are great for boys
And that is when we instituted a strict policy for him and

our other two kids of not playing video games or watching TV during the school

week.  It was a tough transition, and

they all put up much resistance but it worked to wean our son off the video

game dependency.
But what about getting him to harness a natural love for books? Getting him to read for pleasure and look forward to the next book in a series to come out?  How do we get there?
We

know kids who read regularly have a higher vocabulary, do better at composition

and reading comprehension exams and generally fare better in standardized

tests.
Today, about 6 years after weaning him from a video game addiction, at age 12, he is an avid reader

of Sci-Fi and fantasy series and his nose is constantly in a book.
It was a challenge but we got there.  How did we

do it?
First, we credit his excellent fourth grade teacher for assigning as

summer reading a book that featured a boy our son’s age that had similar

awkwardness and was equally shy: “The Liberation of Gabriel King” by K.L. Going.  He could relate to the main character which was a kid during

desegregation 70’s who was socially awkward but had to endure middle school. He

got through it with his best buddy, a little black girl integrated into his

school.  Their ups and downs and school

yard antics entertained our kid and he could relate to the characters. He read

the book even when not asked.
We were on to something.
Next we did some online research and read great reviews from

other parents about “Mrs. Frisby and theRats of NIMH”, another book Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier was about an 11-year old blind thief.
It too held his attention.
It was a really really great start.
To get him into series, we didn’t want to scare him and start out with the common 500+-page ones so we learned from our local librarian to try out “The Wicket Chronicles”series by Joan Lennon.  The lettering was large and the chapters fairly short. It is a great transition to series set.
Similarly, Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House”series of 28-books of adventures about a brother and sister duo who travel to exotic lands and times via their backyard tree house is  good for transitioning to longer chapter books.
To move on to more complex series, we got a recommendation from a clerk

at Barnes and Nobles to try Jeanne DuPrau’s Book of Ember” series, which featured an 11 year old girl as the

protagonist. Our son was in the 5th grade then and 10-years old.  Again, the relatable main character was the trick! It was also a little longer than The Wicket series but still under 500 pages each, about 350.

By then, the “Hunger

Games”
series was hot and all the rage. We gave him that book but he couldn’t get into it so we tried another Suzanne

Collins
series where a boy was the protagonist, Gregor. That worked!

Our kid

really enjoyedThe Underland Chronicles”

and quickly got through it  thru the summer before his  6th grade year.

We figured out books with strong and brave boy lead

characters with ensemble support characters were the trick and thus quickly and

easily introduced Rick Riordan to

his life.
So 6th grade fall was all about Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and in the Summer he was digesting Michael Grant‘s 6 book “Gone” series.
And this year, in the 7th  grade,

he’s going through the 3-book series in Riordan’s “The Heroes of Olympus” and each of those are about 500 pages each!
So there you have it!

You can go with the books and series we used or ask your local or school librarian or local book store clerk for suggestions.  But certainly test out various books until you get the right one. Definitely do some trial and error.

Another alternative will be to start with

the book on tape versions and listen on the way to school or during long trips.

Then cut him off and tell him to find out what happened next, he’ll have to

read the book version himself.

Be creative. Stick with it. Hang in there and don’t give up

parents. It works out in the end if you don’t give up.

Wrap Up:

1. Go with a book where the main character is a boy

2. Adventure series are great way to go as are sci-fi or fantasy adventures

3. Start with shorter series with large lettering and short chapters and gradually move up to books with more pages.

4. Get recommendations from librarians, book clerks and online reviews by other parents and readers, especially if the review is coming from a kid himself.

5. Don’t give up. Keep introducing different books until you figure out a series or topic he can get into and want to follow up on.

Good luck, parents!

Pregnant teen mannequins spark debate in Venezuela

Passerbys to a shop window in the bustling capital of Caracas, Venezuela have been shocked by the sight of  pregnant teen mannequins dressed in the uniforms of most school children in that country.
Two local children’s charities installed the mannequins to bring attention to the country’s 23% teenage pregnancy rate, the highest of all South American countries.
The organizers from Fundana and Construyendo Futuros charities said they felt they needed to pull off the stunt to force people to discuss what is taboo there.
Absence of sex education, they say, is the root cause of the high teen pregnancy rate.
“This is such a taboo subject in Venezuela, we want people to talk about it,” Construyendo Futuros president Thalma Cohen said. “Some people get angry and complain. Others congratulate us.”
Good, bad or indifferent, the experiment is certainly raising dialogue and accomplishing what it set out to do. That’s a critical first step.

Your thoughts?
