Cameron Diaz reacts to outcry over her ‘Esquire’ comments about choosing to be Child Free

Cameron Diaz has reacted to public outcry over her comments in the August issue of  Equire  magazine highlighting the fact she has no desire to become a mother.

It isn’t the first time Diaz has revealed this tidbit about her personal life. She told Parade magazine essentially the same thing in 2009.  But this recent revelation in Esquire is new for a lot of people
The Sex Tape star told the magazine:

To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for — I didn’t take that on. A baby, that’s all day, every day for 18 years,’ Not having a baby might really make things easier, but that doesn’t make it an easy decision. I like protecting people, but I was never drawn to being a mother.

Diaz was shocked by all the outcry over her comments. In response to the heated opposition and debate over her personal decision to be childfree,  Diaz told an Australian news site, “people like to project.”

She added, “I think (the reaction) comes from people wanting to feel good about their own decisions. Just because I don’t have children now, they might look at their life and think, ‘Oh, you have a choice? I didn’t have to do this yet?’
The Charlies’ Angels  actress continued“I don’t really feel the pressure of it. I have never declared anything about whether I will or won’t have a family. Or whether I will or won’t get married. I am a very present person. I am very happy where I am at.”
Top: Oprah Winfrey, Kim Cattrall, Cameron Diaz, George Clooney, Chelsea Handler, Bottom: Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneres, Renee Zelwegger, Margaret Cho and Janean Garofolo have all openly said they do not desire to be parents.
If she could re-do her career all over again, Diaz said she would have been firm about not sharing her personal life with the public.
“ I would have just said to people, ‘You know what, that’s a very personal question. It’s really none of your business’.”
Nonetheless, Diaz hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of children.
“I don’t know the future but I am very open to anything that might happen. If I decide I want to bring a child into my life, then when that day comes I will do it. But it’s not one of those things that I concern myself with at the moment.”

I did a post back in 2010 about the struggles between those that are purposefully child-free and the challenges they face in a world that favors parenting and presupposes most people of child bearing years want to eventually become parents.

Summer Vacation: What to wear to the Resort

I’m heading to a much needed vacation in a few weeks and seeing my childhood friend CaShawn’s fab vacation pics of herself at the Casino in New Orleans reminded me I need to start packing; and picking outfits for different events.
Ciara in a shirt dress while pregnant – Instagram

Pulling off the casino outfit  is always a challenge because I’m never quite sure what to wear.  Do I wear a large muu-muu with big pockets to fit all my winnings, or nah?! Ha!

Really, the first time I traveled to one while on vacation in the Caribbean, I was amazed to see people dressed up. Who knew you were supposed to call ahead and get the dress code? Too funny.
My sister and her beau often take trips to our Maryland casino and before then to Delaware and from the pics she shares in social media, she sticks with the super casual look.
Alas, I’m not that brave yet as I am like most who prefer just taking a bag of pennies to a real casino while on vacay so I know what’s going out.  But admittedly, it’s a guilty pleasure. ha!
Most casinos will say that they want their guests in the evening to wear smart casual clothing. When needing to put together a smart casual look for the casino, there are many options. For instance, dresses can even be part of a smart casual look.

For me, that means two things:  shirt dresses and wrap dresses!! I love a sheath dress and the wrap dress at least gives you shape and form.

When choosing a wrap dress, solid color are best that you can pair with ballet flats or sandals for a great look to wear to the casino.

You may wish to accessorize with a necklace or perhaps a colorful scarf. Wedge shoes also look great with shirt dresses.

Another easy way to put together an outfit is to take an outfit you regularly wear to the office and modify one garment. This garment should be replaced with a casual piece. It might be wearing the top part of a suit and adding jeans or chinos to it. It could be removing the jacket and adding a pretty cashmere cardigan.

The options for what to wear are pretty limitless.

Tia and Tamera Mowry to pen Young Adult teen book series

Our favorite Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum twins Tia Mowry Hardrict and sis Tamera Mowry-Housley are penning a young adults series for HarperCollins Children‘s Books called Twintuition. The series will follow the trials of a set of twin siseters who move to a new town with their mom. According to a blurb on E!, the series will be a mix of the sort of antics we saw on the Mowry sisters’ hit 90s TV show Sister, Sister and a hint of supernatural a la The Twilight series.
This new venture adds to the sisters multi-faceted branding, products and productions: they have a maternity and mom products company Needs brand, Tia has a Yoga DVD set out and stars in a NickMom series Instant Mom (recently renewed for a second season),  while Tamera’s TV hosting gig on FOX‘s The Real (starting this fall), in addition to other projects.  Phew!
These two are really getting their hustle on and giving those other 90s child stars, The Olsen twins, a run for their money.

Check out a video of the duo answering various questions on E! HERE!

5 summer backyard dangers for toddlers & preschoolers

Summer brings a lot of opportunities for outdoor play, but with that it also brings opportunities for a lot of injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each summer 2.3 million children visit the emergency room due to accidents around the grill, pool, and play set. As parents and caregivers plan to spend time outdoors with toddlers and preschoolers, they should be aware of these 5 summer backyard dangers.
1. Wading pools. While some parents and nannies may think less water means less danger, according to research from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the United States every five days a child drowns from being submerged in a portable pool during the summer months. In addition to closely supervising children when they are in a portable pool, parents and caregivers must be vigilant about avoiding distractions, like answering the phone or socializing with neighbors, when the children are playing in and around wading pools. Most of the children who drowned were under the age of five.
2. The sun. To avoid sunburn or too much sun exposure, be sure to apply sunscreen to the children anytime they are playing outdoors. While it can be tempting to only put on sunscreen when the children are at the beach, in the pool, or only on sunny days, make putting sunscreen on a priority anytime the children are playing outdoors. Waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 should be applied before heading outdoors and reapplied every 90 minutes for the best coverage.  Dressing children in hats, swim suits, and clothes that offer UPF protection can also prevent sunburn. Preventing sunburns is the key to preventing skin cancer.
3. Play structures. Backyard play structures can pose many hazards, especially if they aren’t age-appropriate for the children who are playing on them. Be sure that the play structures are designed for the ages of the children using them. Parents and caregivers should also regularly inspect the equipment for dangers, including loose or protruding bolts, broken parts, and any stability issues. Many home play structures are placed directly on the grass, rather than on an impact-absorbing surface like shredded rubber or wood chips. Parents should opt for proper ground surface covering when installing new play structures.

4. Bug bites and bee stings.  For young children, getting a bug bite or a bee sting can be a traumatic experience. Unlike adults, toddlers and preschoolers don’t have the self-control needed to not itch or touch the damaged and irritated skin. As a result, infections can occur. When outside, consider applying insect repellent on children to prevent bug bites. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that DEET based repellents (with no more than 30% DEET) be applied to children aged 2 months and over once per day.  Avoid putting repellent on the children’s hands and close to their eyes, ears, and mouths.  Insect repellent should also only be used on exposed skin and it should be washed off with soap and water once indoors.
5. Garden hoses. Many garden hoses, especially older ones or ones with brass fittings can contain high levels of lead. Lead in any amount is unsafe for children. Lead ingestion can lead to brain damage and developmental problems. Avoid allowing children to drink from hoses that say “do not drink” on them. Since children often drink the water in kiddie pools, it’s a good idea for parents and caregivers to only use water from hoses that are safe to drink out of to fill them.

5 Must-Have Bedtime Story books

Bellyitch Rewind

The tradition of reading a bedtime story has been around for generations.  Sitting on the bed with a parent reading a brightly colored picture book before being tucked into bed is a memory that many adults carry with them.  Reading to your child is critically important for language development and is also a great bonding experience for parent and child.  Choosing a to read as part of your child’s bedtime routine also helps set a pattern and makes bedtime a more enjoyable prospect to your little one.
Here are 5 of a remixed article we posted a few years ago of  the best bedtime stories: those that focus on sleep or what happens at night. Some are classics, some are newer titles; some are for babies, some are for preschoolers, but you’re sure to find 1 or 2 to fit the bill.
Pajama Time! by Sandra Boyton
(ISBN 9780761119753, Workman Publishing Company, Inc.) “It’s Pajama Time! Jamma, Jamma, Jamma Jamma, PJ!” Sandra Boyton’s books are favorites of many children. This is a fun board book for little kids. It makes putting on pajamas a game or a party. With it’s fun mantra, “It’s pajama time,” and the little pajama dance called the “pajammy,” kids have fun with this book.

Little Owl’s Night by Divya Srinivasan
(9780670012954 Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated) Little Owl spends the night visiting his nighttime animal friends throughout the forest. The artwork is fantastic, and this is a good choice to introduce new animals to your child, like the possum, the raccoon, moths, and crickets.  Little owls asks his mother how the night ends, but as she tells him, day breaks and he has fallen asleep.

The House in the Night by Susan Marie Swanson and Beth Krommes
(9780547577692 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) This is the 2009 Caldecott Winner.  It takes you through the house and the things found within a house, to a little sleeping boy who flys out into the nighttime on the back of an owl.  After seeing what happens at night, he is returned to the house. The short sentences are good for younger children with shorter attention spans, and the detail in the pictures give children plenty to explore.

I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll  and Howard McWilliam
(9780979974625 Flashlight Press) This is a great book for older children, especially those that might be struggling with fear of the dark. In this story, a little boy gets a note from the monster under his bed saying that the monster is going on vacation. The little boy realizes he can’t sleep without his monster. So, he interviews other monsters for the position, but there is a problem with each one that makes them funny rather than scary. In the end, his monster returns and he can fall asleep.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

(9780694003617  HarperCollins Children’s Books) This classic children’s book is a bedside staple in many homes.  In this simple story, a little bunny says goodnight to all the things he sees on his way to bed. Don’t be surprised if your child starts saying goodnight to the objects in your house on his way to bed after reading this book for several nights. The book is so loved by children, that there is even a plush bunny in striped pajamas that you can buy for your child.

Study: Pregnancy loss linked to heart disease later

Miscarriages and stillbirths might be a marker for women at higher risk of developing heart disease later in life, an observational study suggested.
The study suggests that physicians should now include stillbirth or miscarriage on their list of items to ask about in screening for cardiovascular disease.
Coronary heart disease risk was 27% higher for women who had a history of stillbirth compared with none (multivariate adjusted odds ratio 1.27, 95% CI 1.07-1.51), Donna R. Parker, ScD, of Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket, and colleagues found.
That risk was a significant 18% to 19% elevated among women with one or two prior miscarriages compared with none in an analysis of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) observational cohort appearing in the July/August issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.
“Women with a history of one or more stillbirths or one or more miscarriages appear to be at increased risk of future cardiovascular disease and should be considered candidates for closer surveillance and/or early intervention,” they urged.
The American Heart Association guidelines already include pregnancy complications as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women due to growing evidence for an association, but these don’t address long-term cardiovascular implications of pregnancy loss, the group pointed out.
Physicians should now include stillbirth or miscarriage on their list of items to ask about in screening for cardiovascular disease, argued Roxana Mehran, MD, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, who was not involved in the study.
“This is so important because the prevalence of pregnancy loss is increasing as the [average] age of women who are becoming pregnant is increasing,” she told MedPage Today.
Women with a history of pregnancy loss perhaps should be screened earlier, agreed Mehran, the founding and immediate past chair of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions’ Women in Innovations program, working with ob/gyns to promote screening women for cardiovascular risk factors.

Tips for Monitoring Kids’ Digital Devices (INFOGRAPHIC)

According to a recent Nielsen survey, 70 percent of teens aged 13 – 17 now use smartphones.  Monitoring the smartphones, tablets, laptops, game consoles and other devices can be a struggle for parents.
The makers of the device management app MORE have tried to solve the problem by creating platform which allows parents to remotely access, control and monitor all of their family’s devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, iPads, etc.). MORE founders state their app is perfect for those who use their devices for both work and home.

Check out this infographic they’ve assembled to help frame the dilemma:
