Mother’s Day: Last Minute Ideas on What to Wear Out Today

Happy Mother’s Day, moms and moms-to-be!
Whether you’re going to worship services, heading to brunch, a spa day or dinner later, you may be a last minute person and still scrambling to figure out what to wear. Here are some ideas from Chanel at Josic.com on what you can throw together really quickly this morning or later today that may work for your big day out:
Retro Dress You can’t go wrong with a cute floral dress. You’ll look just as sweet as your mom. Pair it with a cardigan sweater and ballet flats for a look that’s effortless but appropriate.
Print Pants Skip the trousers and wear pants in a fun print. They would look great with a monochrome top such as a light sweater or a blouse. You can also wear them with loafers or oxford shoes.

Sweater It’s May but it’s still cold in some parts of the country. Wear a light sweater with a pair of fun print pants, as mentioned before. Or you can opt for a short-sleeved linen sweater, which is huge for spring.
Skirt You can always go the opposite route and wear a skirt instead. Just don’t wear a mini skirt. Instead, wear a knee-length skirt in a bright hue such as fuchsia. A peplum skirt is a cute and feminine way to perk up your Mother’s Day look.

Blouse Wear a solid skirt with a printed blouse to mix things up. Pair that fuchsia skirt with a black and white floral print chiffon blouse. Floral prints are huge, especially for spring.
Flats Swap out your high heels for something comfier. These shoes are appropriate for a day out with your mom. Wear ballet flats in a playful animal print or studded design.
Classic Handbag A simple purse that has a detachable strap is the perfect option for Mother’s Day 2014. Youc an use it as a clutch or wear it as a crossbody bag. Add a pop of color to your wardrobe with a coral or orange handbag.
Jewelry Show mom your appreciation for her with a necklace or ring that says “love” or “daughter.” You can be an even better daughter and get her a matching set!
Have fun!

Michelle Obama’s Mother’s Day message addresses Kidnapped Nigerian girls.

In her weekly address this week, First Lady Michelle Obama paid tribute to all mothers this Mother’s Day weekend and also used the opportunity to express concern for the missing nearly 300+ Nigerian school girls who were abducted from their school dormitory nearly a month ago by the terrorist group Boko Haram.

She said in the message that as parents to two girls, she and President Barack Obama could empathize with the parents who are aching for the return of their daughters.

In recent weeks, buoyed by social media activity, global voices have called for the international community to assist the Nigerian government recover the girls who are said to be held captive, being raped daily and are slated to be sold for $12 each at the border, per the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.

In response to this news, images of the  celebrity men who participated in Ashton Kutcher‘s 2011 “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” campaign have started to circulate widely again as a message to would-be purchasers.
No telling if the effort will yield results but as of last night, the US was said to be sending troops to render military assistance in the effort.
The Nigerian government only accepted help in recent days so the delay could have complicated the rescue effort as could international intervention and agitation. Notorious terror group reaponsible for the 9-11 attacks Al Qaeda has called the kidnap of the girls to be against their efforts.

Now when the best known terror group calls your actions excessive, it’s time to turn in the towel and #bringbackourgirls.

Top 5 Best Cities to live in while Pregnant

The US lags behind other developed nations in its laws that protect expecting parents.

In fact, where you live could have a substantial impact on your legal rights at work, says Tom Spiggle, founder of  The Spiggle Law Firm, a family and pregnancy discrimination practice.

“Certainly all states are covered by federal law, which includes the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, but even this law only covers employers that have 15 or more employees—and courts are split on what rights this act provides,” Spiggle says. “Courts have held that employers don’t have to make minor accommodations at work—like allowing women to carry a water bottle to stay hydrated—to allow pregnant women to keep working.”

Fortunately, adds Spiggle, author of the upcoming “You’re Pregnant? You’re Fired: Protecting Mothers, Fathers, and Other Caregivers in the Workplace” (www.yourepregnantyourefired.com)  “a lot of states and cities are stepping up to fill the gap.”

Here is Spiggle’s listing of the top 5  cities with the best policies and laws for  working women who are pregnant:

1. New York City, N.Y.

In 2013, New York City passed amendments to its Human Rights Law that require employers with four or more employees to provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant women to allow them to continue to work through their pregnancy. This protection is broader than both the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act and the New York State Human Rights Law. But here’s the kicker that gets NYC first-place billing: it requires employers with five or more employees to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave to care for themselves or certain family members.

So, if you are pregnant and your doctor tells you to avoid lifting heavy objects, if you live in NYC, your employer will have to accommodate that restriction. If you’ve also got a toddler at home who comes down with the flu and can’t go to daycare, you can also get some paid leave to stay home for a few days. If you lived in a state like Virginia, your employer could fire you for refusing to come to work under those same circumstances.

 2. San Francisco, Calif.

Pregnant women in California are protected from discrimination by the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act. In addition, the Act requires that employers must provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant employees when supported by a health care provider. On top of that, a pregnant woman in San Francisco can get up to nine days of paid sick leave and cannot be discriminated against for taking leave

With one of the oldest paid-sick-day laws in the nation (passed in 2006), San Francisco has demonstrated that providing for paid sick leave does not negatively affect the economy.

3. Newark, N.J.

In 2014, New Jersey amended its Law Against Discrimination to specifically provide protections for pregnant women who need an accommodation to continue to work. In passing this law, the New Jersey legislature found that pregnant women are at particular risk of suffering from discrimination. The law notes that the following constitute reasonable accommodations: bathroom breaks; breaks for increased water intake; periodic rest; assistance with manual labor; job restructuring or modified work schedules; and temporary transfers to less strenuous or hazardous work. It gets even better if you live in Newark. This year the city passed a law providing that employees in a company with 10 or more employees can receive up to five days of paid sick leave. Employees at companies with fewer than 10 employees can receive up to three days of paid leave.

 4. Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii provides broad workplace protectionsto pregnant women, including the right to workplace accommodations, it protects even part-time employees. Plus, you get to live in Hawaii.

 5. Philadelphia, Pa.

As of 2014, a pregnant woman in Philadelphiais entitled to receive a reasonable accommodation at work to allow her to continue working. This applies to any employer that employs at least one employee who is not a relative.

“There are several other states and localities worth noting that have that have done, or have legislation pending, to protect pregnant employees,” added Spiggle. “They include Maryland, Alaska, Connecticut, Texas, West Virginia, Louisiana and Illinois.”

If you’re not living in one of these states, move there soon or read up on your protections in your city and good luck to ya!

Mother’s Day: 10 Pretty Cool TV Moms

Whether they’re still reigning on continuing shows or live on only in syndication, there are some television moms that were so cool that they’ve become part of the cultural landscape forever. Some might be better known for their coolness than their good parenting decisions, while others became cool because they were such great moms; either way, these are 10 of the coolest moms ever on television.

1. Lorelai Gilmore (above) – MTV’s 16 & Pregnant and its various spin-offs might have the market on teen moms cornered these days, but Lorelai Gilmore and her relationship with her daughter Rory on Gilmore Girls showed a more functional and inspirational portrait of a teenage mom, all grown up. From her great wardrobe to her determination to be the best mom she could possibly be, Lorelai is definitely one of the coolest TV moms of all time.

2. Roseanne Connor – Though she was never a fashionista and her gruff demeanor was the stuff of controversy during Roseanne‘s heyday, the show still runs regularly on several networks with a devoted following. With a realistic portrayal of blue-collar life and a progressive attitude, Roseanne was always a cool mom, even when she wore a tacky waitress uniform.

3. The Mother – While no one aside from the writers yet knows her name, the woman that Ted Mosby refers to only as “Your Mother” on How I Met Your Mother is so cool that no one can stop talking about her. Theories about her identity are debated across the Internet, with viewers clinging to the edges of their seats in hopes of finding out who she is.

4. Mary Cooper – The ultra-conservative Mary Cooper, mother of Sheldon Cooper on CBS’s hit Big Bang Theory wouldn’t win any awards for coolness at first glance, but deeper scrutiny shows just how awesome she actually is. With her trademark mixture of patience and firmness, she’s the only person on the show capable of managing the eccentric genius and his many personality quirks.

5. Claire Huxtable – As a partner in a high-powered New York City law firm and the mother of five, Clair Huxtable was the backbone of The Cosby Show for the entirety of its original run and retains her power after more than two decades in syndication.

6. Carol Brady – Giving advice and support to six children and managing to prevent riots in their single shared bathroom, Carol Brady was the epitome of seventies cool. With her chic haircuts, perfect clothing and unflappable demeanor, Mrs. Brady is one of history’s favorite television moms.

7. Kitty Foreman – With a haircut cribbed from Charlie’s Angels and a sense of humor that never failed, Kitty Foreman of That 70′s Show was cool enough to love her children and their friends unconditionally. There’s a reason why everyone congregates at the Foreman house, and it has nothing to do with the ill-tempered Red.

8. Lily Humphrey – Her parenting decisions may have been questionable most of the time, but there’s no denying that the thrice-wed, glamorous Lily Humphrey was a cool mom. Dressed in head-to-toe couture and willing to pay any price to protect her children, Lily was almost as important as the high school students that made up the primary cast of Gossip Girl.

9. Nancy Botwin – There’s nothing cool about selling illegal drugs or getting tangled up in organized crime like Nancy did on Weeds, but there is something to be said for going to any extreme to protect your children and maintaining a perfect coif all the while.

10. Laura Petrie – It’s a safe bet that any character played by Mary Tyler Moore during her prime could find a spot on a list of the coolest in their field, and the swinging Sixties Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke show is no exception. From insisting on wearing pedal pushers while her contemporaries wore dresses to acting as the perfect hostess, Laura is just as cool in reruns as she was during the show’s first run.

CDC: First Baby after 40 Rate in US more than doubled; DC #1, NY #2

A new Centers for Disease Control survey released today shows that the rate of women waiting until their 40s to have their first child has more than doubled in some states, and has increased overall.
Washington, DC was number one on the list of statewide data of women having their first kid between the ages of 40 and 44 with New York second and Massachusetts third.
The rate of women having their first child after 40 more than doubled from 1990 to 2012, the CDC said. And in 2012, there were more than 9 times as many first births to women 35 and older than 40 years ago.
The data was compiled from U.S. state birth certificates nationwide, taken from the Natality Data File of the National Vital Statistics System. The analysis includes data on all births occurring in the United States, including maternal and infant demographics, and health characteristics for babies born in the country.
There were differences in race as well with Asian American women showing the biggest increase in delayed first time pregnancy.
The data shows Asian/Pacific Islanders’ rate of first birth in 2012 was almost double that of the next highest group.
And Black women too have started waiting longer. Among those 40 to 44, increases in first birth rates rose 171 percent among blacks and 130 percent among whites.
A couple of things to realize about this information:
1. The US population will decrease overall given that delayed pregnancy comes with some fertility complications for some which also means that women will usually have just one to two children when they start so  late. Depending on your world view that may be a good or bad thing.
2. It also means that the children of those women may be better off given that women who wait until their 40s are usually more financially stable, educated,  mature and have more resources and support to provide a better life for their children, experts say.

5 celebrities welcoming their 5th baby (How does it Equal 15 parents tho?)

FIVE is the number for this FIFTH day of the work week for some celebrity birth and pregnancy stories around the web involving baby number FIVE.

But in this era of blended families and separation and divorce so common, there are 15 parents in this story. Read on:
After welcoming 4 daughters, country singer Zac Brown and his wife Shelly finally welcomed their 5th child, a son, this week on May 5th! The couple are parents to 3-year old Joni Mason, 4 1/2 year old Georgia Slone, 5 1/2 year old Lucy and 7-year old Justice. In 2011, after Joni was born, Brown joked that he planned to keep on trying until he got his boy. I guess Shelly was down for the plan! (smile)
Meanwhile, Bruce Willis and his wife model Emma Heming-Willis welcomed their second child, daugher  Evelyn Penn Willis, also on May 5th they are parents to 2-year old Mabel Ray. And this is Willis’ 5th child as he is dad to 20-year old Tallulah, 20, 22-year old Scout, 22, and 25-year old Rumer with Demi Moore.
[Side note: Demi’s other ex Ashton Kutcher is reportedly expecting his first kid too with fiance Mila Kunis]
Finally, shortly after announcing that she is pregnant with her fifth child, British TV personality and model Katie Price announced to split with her hubby Kieran Hayler who is dad to their 8-month old son together Jett Riviera.  The couple married last January 2013 after dating only a few months.
This will be Price’s 5th child.  She has three other children with exes Peter Andre and Dwight Yorke: 12-year old Harvey, 12, 8-year old Junior and 6-year old Princess.
Also across the pond, singer Kerry Katonia  of Atomic Kitten welcomed her fifth baby with her beau George Kay Kerry is already a mother to three daughters and one son, to her past husbands Brian McFadden and Mark Croft.
Also, this week Donald Trump Jr.‘s wife Vanessa tweeted that she has FIVE weeks left until she welcomes her 5th child. The Trumps, who have been married for 8 years are parents to 6-year old Kai, 4-year old Donald III,  2-year old Tristan and 15-months old Spencer.
Was our math right? Did you count 15 parents too?
