In a survey of over 2,000 respondents in four regions of the US – West, Midwest, South and Northeast, a few spots stood out among of the over 400 in six categories.

Study: Acupuncture boosts chances of conception in infertile couples

Many couples trying to conceive a child may turn to modern Western medicines such as hormone, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other treatments and procedures if they realize they have fertility struggles.

And some couples are looking to the East and exploring options like acupuncture and other treatments Asia have relied on for years to increase their fertility. Acupuncture involves placing very thin needles at specific points on the body.

Several studies have linked increased fertility to acupuncture. A 2002 study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that women who did acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer had double the success rates of those who did not have acupuncture. That German study led by the famous Dr. Wolfgang Paulus was subsequently followed up and repeated with the same results by Dr. LarsWestergaard. A study by Dr. Stener Victorin demonstrated increased blood flow in uterine arteries with the use of electronic acupuncture. And for men, an earlier study showed increased fertilization rates when male partners did 10 sessions of acupuncture in preparation for IVF.

The Paulus study showed a success rate of 43% in the acupuncture group vs 26% in the non acupuncture group. The Westergaard study and other follow up studies turned up the same results.

What generally happens for couples who have failed to conceive naturally is that they could attempt 3-6 months of acupuncture and lifestyle adjustments usually to speed up conception rates, said Dr. John Zhang of New York’s New Hope Fertility Center.

“The acupuncture treatments would be about once per week and the protocol would be adjusted according to the phase of the woman’s cycle,” Dr. Zhang told Bellyitch. “It is recommended for men to do once to twice weekly during this period to improve the odds.”

That number increases to twice a week for couples going through IVF or other fertility treatments with medication.

Moreover, acupuncture can also be helpful in maintaining the pregnancy and relieving many types of discomfort associated to pregnancy (i.e. nausea, fatigue, headaches, insomnia etc.), while reducing the stress associated to IVF, Zhang wrote in a recent post in wellroundedny.com

For those considering trying acupuncture, Dr. Zhang and Christina Burns from Geneseed Acupuncture share some of his tips for finding the right acupuncturist:

An acupuncturist should have a minimum of 3 years training but it would be better if he or she had gone through a 4-5 year program. Ask them how much experience they have relation to the treatment of fertility and see how informed their answer is.

An acupuncturist should know that the treatment (acupoints) should change according to the phase of the cycle (menses, follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase).

One might ask if they have an additional training in herbs and/or nutritional counselling as they are often a helpful complement to the acupuncture.

It may also be good to know their “needling style” (i.e. are they aggressive? do they do a lot of manipulation?) because some acupuncturist are gentle and others not so much. Both approaches work. It just depends on what is favourable to you (i.e. are you a “no pain no gain” person or a little timid of needles).

Sofia Vergara said she froze her eggs for future baby (VIDEO)

Last week, singer and The Game actress Brandy Norwood told Queen Latifah she planned to freeze her eggs for a baby in the future.

And on this anniversary today of the tragic Boston bombings, we are reminded that it was last year around this time that Modern Family actress described the process of freezing her eggs in an interview on Good Morning America.

Vergara, who is currently 41 and dating a guy who is three years younger than she is and who never had a child said last year she wanted to preserve the opportunity to bear him a child.

“I just wanted to plan ahead,” Vergara told ABC News of the possibility of more children.

“I have my son, Manolo,” she said of her 21-year old son from a previous marriage who was studying in Boston at the time of the incident. “It’s not an emergency for me to have another kid, but for Nicky, he’s never had a baby.”

She admitted to consulting a fertility specialist.

“Nothing happens that naturally anymore,” she said of her options for having more kids at her age. “I wanted to take advantage of science. Why not?”

She added, “I wanted to make sure I already froze my eggs. I wanted to take advantage of science,” adding, “I took them out already. They’re in the refrigerators. Hopefully, they’ll be fresh by the time I use them.”

IVF Clinic implanted another couple’s twins into Italian woman

An Italian woman is currently pregnant with another couple’s twins after a mix ump at an IVF clinic caused the wrong fertilized embryo to be implanted in her uterus.

The Sandro Pertini Hospital in Rome didn’t alert the woman of the mix up until she was already three months along in the pregnancy. The switch apparently happened sometime in early December. The nation’s ministry of health is investigating the incident and has ceased all further implantations at the clinic until it concludes its look into this melee.

TV personality Jennifer “JWoww” Farley snuggled her bump while wearing a jeweled trim black gown and rumored pregnant actress Mila Kunis posed with her “Best Villain” award while looking conspicuously preggers in a black Thakoon shift dress. Kunis is reportedly expecting with fiance Ashton Kutcher.

Meanwhile, Jessica Alba went bold with color and structure in Piece D’anarchive Bordeaux top paired with a Kenzo fall 2014 neon skirt, a clutch by Narciso Rodriguez with Jimmy Choo pumps and Jenna Dewan-Tatum went sheer and black in Pamella Roland.

Kate Middleton’s Travel documents debunk pregnancy rumors

A New Zealand official has revealed that on mandatory documents the island nation requires of those traveling there, Kate Middleton did not check the box asking if a traveler is pregnant. The official confirmed it to CBS radio.

Proof Beyonc’s “thigh gap” existed before that controversial Instagram photo

Followers, fans, and critics of Beyonce have accused the Queen B of photoshopping a “thigh gap” in a photo she recently shared on her Instagram account.

In the photo, there is a substantial gap between her thighs and if you don’t know already, that is the latest hard-to-obtain beauty feature that young girls are dieting and exercising like crazy to obtain.

Some are saying that the normally voluptuous star would be sending a dangerous message to the impressionable young girls who follow her if she really altered the photo.

It does look suspect. But me being a big Beyonce fan who has captured all of her videos in still form, I was able to comb through the pics and found some revealing that she already had a thigh gap before that photo was taken.

In a still from her Superpower and Heaven videos and another during her performance at the latest MTV Music Awards, you can see a significant gap already exists between her svelte and toned thighs.

Months on tour following a grueling exercise and diet regimen to slim down after baby left her substantially smaller than before. If she kept up with it, she could have kept losing weight.
